Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8 - Beyond the city

They didn't stop driving.

Not for a long time.

The road stretched endlessly ahead, cutting through empty land where buildings slowly gave way to open fields, scattered trees, and long-abandoned roadside structures.

For the first time since everything began—

The world felt… bigger.

Quieter.

But not safer.

Elias sat in the passenger seat, eyes fixed on the road ahead, every muscle still tense. The city was gone behind them—but the silence out here carried its own kind of danger.

"What now?" Sarah asked softly from the back.

No one answered immediately.

Because no one really knew.

"We keep moving," Elias said finally. "Find somewhere we can hold. Somewhere defensible."

"Like a house?" Mira asked weakly.

Elias glanced back at her.

She was pale, her leg carefully propped up, bandaged but still swollen.

"Not just a house," he said. "Something better."

"Like what?" his mother asked.

Elias didn't answer right away.

Because he didn't have a clear picture yet.

Just a goal.

Survive.

Then—

Static.

Everyone turned.

The van radio crackled suddenly, cutting through the silence.

Malik reached for it quickly, adjusting the dial.

"…—broadcast… emergency civilian notice…"

The signal was weak.

Broken.

But there.

"Turn it up," Elias said.

Malik did.

"…temporary evacuation zones established outside major cities… civilians advised to move toward designated military safe points…"

Elias leaned forward slightly.

"Locations?" his father asked.

"…coordinates vary… nearest confirmed zone… north highway sector… approximately fifty kilometers from city limits…"

Static.

Then—

"…warning… increased hostile activity reported outside urban areas… not all infected are slow…"

Everyone went still.

"…exercise extreme caution… remain armed… avoid open areas…"

The signal cut.

Dead again.

Silence filled the van.

"…Not all infected are slow?" Mira whispered.

Elias didn't like that.

Not at all.

"We've already seen it," he said quietly. "Back in the city."

Malik nodded.

"Yeah. Some of them were faster than the others."

Sarah crossed her arms.

"Great. So now we've got faster ones out here too."

His father exhaled.

"We head north," he said. "That's our best chance."

Elias nodded.

"Agreed."

Malik pressed the gas a little harder.

They drove for another hour.

The highway became more broken—cars abandoned, some crashed, others burned. The further they went, the more signs of collapse they saw.

But fewer bodies.

Fewer infected.

That was something.

Then—

Elias spotted it.

"Slow down," he said.

Malik eased off the gas.

On the side of the road stood a large outdoor supply store.

Windows cracked—but not completely destroyed.

Sign still intact.

"Could have supplies," Elias said.

Malik nodded. "Worth checking."

They pulled the van behind the building, out of sight.

"Same plan," Elias said. "Fast. Quiet."

Everyone nodded.

Mira stayed in the van with his mother this time.

"Be careful," she said.

Elias gave a small nod.

"I will."

He, his father, Malik, and Sarah moved toward the entrance.

Elias pushed the door open slowly.

Creak.

They froze.

Waited.

Nothing.

They entered.

The store was dim—but better stocked than anything they had seen so far.

Shelves still held items.

Clothing.

Backpacks.

Tools.

Weapons.

Real ones.

Knives.

Axes.

Machetes.

Elias exhaled slowly.

"This is it," he said.

They moved quickly.

Malik grabbed a heavy axe, testing its weight.

"Now this," he said, "I like."

Sarah picked a long knife, sliding it into her belt.

Elias found a machete—balanced, sharp.

Better than anything he had before.

His father grabbed a sturdy crowbar and a thick jacket.

"Take what you need," Elias said. "Not everything."

They also gathered clothes—stronger, thicker, better suited for the cold nights outside the city.

Elias changed into a dark jacket, gloves, and heavier pants.

It felt different.

Like stepping into something new.

Not normal life.

Something harder.

Stronger.

When they returned to the van, Mira smiled faintly.

"You look… different," she said.

Elias shrugged slightly.

"Better prepared."

They gave her a jacket too, helping her put it on carefully.

His mother adjusted it gently.

"There," she said. "Warmer."

Mira nodded.

"Thanks."

Elias climbed back into the front seat.

"Ready?" Malik asked.

Elias looked ahead.

The road stretched north.

Toward the unknown.

Toward the so-called safe zone.

But now—

They knew better.

There was no guaranteed safety.

Only better chances.

"Yeah," Elias said.

"Let's move."

The van started again.

Rolling forward.

Leaving everything behind.

As they drove deeper into the outside world—

Elias couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed.

The city had been chaos.

But out here—

It felt like something else entirely.

Something quieter.

Smarter.

Watching.

And as the trees thickened along the roadside—

And the road narrowed ahead—

Elias tightened his grip.

Because whatever waited next—

Wasn't going to be easier.

It was just going to be different.
