Hanz and his wife lived inside a forest and not a city. His main reason for doing this was quite simple. As he did not have any real loyalty to anyone, keeping his beloved wife under someone's else's controlled territory was very scary and risky for him.
And his wife was actually an wood elf who had a great affinity for the nature and the forest. That was also one of the reasons why she had no trouble living in the middle of the forest. Instead, she actually enjoyed it.
The forest where this house was located, it was quite a dangerous place. As his house was surrounded by a strong barrier, it was safe. But stepping foot outside the barrier immediately invited death.
