Fairy Tail: Oberon (Chapter 094)
CHAPTER START---
"Nice try!" The man forms his Barrier in a sphere around him, protecting him while Oberon closes in.
The Dark Wizards above stop their attacks and turn to look down at the duo, expecting Oberon to stop his advance and change tactics, but the boy simply raises his left hand, as if gripping the air, then pulls it in.
The man feels gravity shift before his face slams into the inside of his Barrier, breaking his nose and concentration in an instant.
Oberon's small fist smashes into his face, sending him backward for hundreds of feet as the Wind Magic keeps the man floating.
The Dark Wizards' expressions fall, realizing one of their three generals is in serious danger, but before they can move, Oberon rockets after the man.
The man flips in the air and rights himself, only to desperately raise his forearms, creating a solid Barrier attached to them, blocking the next punch. The weight of the strike sends him backward, and Oberon alters his gravity, causing the backward momentum to carry the man up to the stars.
"Attack!" The man's command is drenched in desperation, but as he puts his focus into stopping his momentum, Oberon is hit by dozens of long-range Magics, mainly from Gun Magic and Bullet Magic.
But his eyes widen in horror, seeing Oberon closing in, the attacks shattering against him as they both get farther from the clouds below. He's forced to raise another Barrier, and Oberon's fist shatters it, along with his forearms.
The man's Wind Magic falters, and Oberon feels his body begin falling. He capitalizes on this moment and lands a punch to the gut before spinning and kicking the man in the side, breaking three of his ribs and sending him back toward the fortress, in the direction of the other Dark Wizards.
They all stop firing, racing toward their general to catch his unconscious form, but Oberon reaches him first, grabbing the man by the legs and spinning, throwing him into the crowd of Dark Wizards.
They halt their momentum, wary of his next move, but instead, the unconscious man is launched toward them, seemingly harmless. Until he gets close, and Oberon amplifies the gravity alteration placed on him.
As some of the Dark Wizards move to catch him, they feel a pulling force toward their unconscious general, and the range rapidly expands to pull in most of the flying Wizards.
A mere handful manage to push most of their Magic Energy into flying away, desperately fighting against the Gravity Magic while their friends are pulled into a large sphere of people.
As they get past the range of its influence, a golden glow radiates through the area from behind them, and they turn around to look up in horror.
With a mischievous smile on his face, Oberon uses Light Construct to make a house-sized paddle, and swings it at the sphere of still conscious people.
The impact shatters the intentionally flimsy constructs and sends them all flying toward the fortress plateau, but he commands gravity to make their landing gentle.
His laughter is deep and true, aggravating and terrifying his opponents as he wipes a tear from his eye. "Oh man, I always wanted to try a construct that big!" he says while some of the very few conscious Wizards on the ground are wracked with pain, struggling to breathe, or spitting out all of their teeth.
As Oberon is memorizing the sequence of his last attack, one of the men who avoided the attack entirely flies over to him. Standing on a blue cloud with a pair of Magic Pistols in his hands.
"I heard you were powerful, but this is ridiculous," the man says, not raising the pistols yet. "Do you really think you can afford to be trying out new moves against us?"
Oberon frowns as the man moves closer, then focuses on the cloud beneath him. "What kind of Magic is that? Where can I learn it?"
"Tch. I would say you'd be one hell of a Wizard in our guild, but you get distracted so easily. But still, you would have made a lot of money from mercenary contracts with us."
"I don't like killing people, so I doubt that. Besides, you guys are only successful because most people can't fly. But I can fly, so now we're on even ground…or, sky?"
"I get what you're saying."
"Yup. Up here, where you don't have air superiority, you're about as strong as regular Wizards."
"I suppose that's true," the man says, raising his pistols at Oberon, both barrels glowing purple. "But we're a Wizard Guild that specializes in war. Which means we've got tactics, training, and experience that you regular Wizard Guilds just can't match."
Oberon doesn't react to the weapons pointed at him, simply standing in the air and talking to the man. "Yes, Master Makarov taught me all about that kind of stuff. Strategy, teamwork, and trust in your comrades. All of that plays a role in the outcome of a battle. But you are overlooking one simple truth."
"And what's that?" The man flows more Magic Energy into his guns, using both weapons to form a single purple Magic Circle aimed at Oberon.
"Those beliefs stem from humans. Humans who lean on certain things for leverage and survival. But at the very top, Mages transcend humanity. We are beings of Magic. And while at our core, we are weak, we do need help, we do need people. Sometimes, power really is all that matters?"
The man raises a single brow at Oberon. "Are you saying you're invincible or something? Our Supreme Commander would disagree with that. Just wait till he comes out here."
"Nothing is truly invincible, well, maybe one thing. Heck, I'm not even the strongest in my guild. Actually, Gildarts was supposed to be here, but Blue Pegasus didn't want him on the airship…"
"Then what the hell are you trying to say?"
Oberon sighs. "What I'm saying is, you should surrender. Because even with all the time you think you've bought, with your friends surrounding me."
The man glances at his allies above, below, and even behind Oberon.
"You can't win. Because those tactics are best for people you can reach. But in a world where Magic is everything, to people like you…Yeah, I might as well be invincible…"
The man grits his teeth and fires the condensed Magic Bullet, but to his horror, Oberon flies forward and grabs it, arriving in front of him.
The other Wizards are stunned with amazement as Oberon holds the explosive bullet in his hand and opens it to face the man.
"Shi—" the explosion, trapped between Oberon's relatively impenetrable shield and the open air, expands toward the man, enveloping him in searing Magic Energy.
He's launched out of the purple blast with third-degree burns on the right side of his body, and one of his allies dives to catch him while the others rush Oberon…
---Meanwhile, on The Christina…
Sitting on a pile of unconscious Dark Wizards, Ichiya adjusts his binoculars to see Oberon's 'fight'. A show of different colored Magics dancing in the sky, and each time he gets bored with a Magic, the user is sent gently falling to the plateau below, joining their allies.
"I hope he doesn't go overboard," he says. "The Magic Council wants to use Sky Wolf as an example, but they don't want us killing everyone to do so."
"I highly doubt any of them are dead. Well, maybe a few, since Sir Oberon is so powerful." Virgo says. "But he abhors taking lives, and would only do so if absolutely necessary."
Beside her, Aries gently and improperly holds her borrowed Magic Rifle to her chest. "These Wizards are weak. Even weaker than us, thanks to Sir Oberon's Magic Energy, he'll be gentle."
Ichiya nods, already imagining the propaganda the Magic Council will create after they submit some portions of their memories from this assignment. 'But where is that other one…' he wonders, and seconds later his answer reveals itself.
As they close in on the battle, the plateau hosting the fortress rumbles and shakes, before the area around it glows with a bright yellow Magic Circle. It's large enough to fit the entire fortress into the middle, and seconds after forming, the area of the Magic Circles descends.
Like a giant elevator of earth sinking into the mountain itself, simply moving down, faster than anyone can make sense of it.
Oberon smiles at the feat, never having seen Earth Magic at such a scale. And within seconds, not only is the fortress lowered into the mountain, but a lid slides across the pit, sealing it off. At the edge of the plateau, a large square opening then forms, a tunnel leading toward the now underground fortress and its cavern.
And out from the newly made tunnel steps Jura Neekis, hands clasped and hidden in his sleeves as he looks up at Oberon, who is still soaking in the details of what he just saw.
He sees three Wizards hovering nearby and frowns. "It's been almost two minutes, and you're still fighting. I expected better of Wizard Saint Makarov's golden boy, King of the Fairies."
Oberon smiles at his friend. "I was just keeping them busy. I didn't want them sending reinforcements out here because I beat everyone." He waves his hand, and the few remaining Dark Wizards crash to the plateau, squashed by increased gravity.
Oberon quickly descends to hover near Jura, admiring the perfectly formed tunnel. "That was some pretty awesome Earth Magic."
"Thank you. I thought it was better than a dome. This way, they only have one path out, unless they decide to risk breaking the lip. But they don't know how deep they are or how thick the lid is, so risking it falling onto them is the least likely option."
"Good call. So, are we waiting out here for them, or going in?"
"My Earth Magic is limited with this much open space against a guild of flying Wizards. I'd prefer to fight inside. Besides, if we close the tunnel to suffocate them, then they may get desperate and simply break the lid…or use that creature."
Oberon frowns and hovers over to the tunnel, creating a few floating spheres of light ahead of them. "These guys are pretty famous for night raids, so I'll make light for us when we go inside."
Jura focuses his mind, using Telepathy to reach Ichiya as the airship begins to land. "We'll be going ahead. We trust you to secure everyone here and follow us in."
After a moment, he nods, and Oberon receives confirmation from Virgo and Aries. "Alright, let's go finish this up…"
