Chapter 3 - Chapter 2—The Trials of the Princesses

Seraphina stood before the Grand Witch with her hands clasped tightly in front of her. For the first time in her life, she was not certain of herself.

The Grand Witch watched her from beneath the hood of her long silver robe. Her ancient eyes seemed to see far beyond Seraphina's beautiful face, as though she could look directly into the princess's thoughts. "Are you afraid, Princess Seraphina?"

Seraphina hesitated. "A little."

The Grand Witch smiled faintly. "Good."

Seraphina blinked. "Good?"

"Only a fool enters the unknown without fear. Courage is not the absence of fear, child. It is the decision to move forward despite it."

Seraphina lowered her gaze. She had heard stories about the trials since she was a child. Every princess of Celestia who wished to journey beyond the celestial realm had to prove herself worthy. It was not enough to be born into royalty. Blood gave her a title, but it could not give her wisdom. Today, she would have to earn that.

The Grand Witch turned towards the enormous doors behind her. "Your trial will take place in the Library of Wisdom."

At the mention of the library, Seraphina's heart quickened. The doors slowly opened. Beyond them stretched a vast chamber filled with towering bookshelves. They rose so high that their tops disappeared into a ceiling hidden among swirling clouds of blue light. Thousands upon thousands of books, scrolls and ancient manuscripts filled the shelves.

Some were bound in leather. Others were covered in gold. A few seemed to be alive, their pages turning by themselves despite the complete absence of wind. Seraphina stared in awe.

"The Library of Wisdom contains knowledge older than Celestia itself," the Grand Witch said. "Some truths have been recorded here for thousands of years. Others have been deliberately forgotten."

Seraphina frowned. "Why would anyone deliberately forget a truth?"

The Grand Witch's expression became strangely serious. "Because not every truth is meant to be known."

A chill ran down Seraphina's spine. Before she could ask another question, the Grand Witch continued. "Your task is simple. Find the Book of Forgotten Truths."

"That's all?"

"Do not be so confident." The Grand Witch raised her hand. The shelves inside the library suddenly shifted. Wood groaned. Books rattled. Entire sections of the library moved as if the chamber itself had come alive. Within seconds, the orderly rows had transformed into a bewildering maze.

Seraphina stared at it.

The Grand Witch smiled. "You may enter."

"And if I fail?"

The Grand Witch's eyes narrowed slightly. "Then you will remain here until you understand why you failed."

Seraphina swallowed. That was not exactly reassuring. She stepped inside. The moment she crossed the threshold, the doors slammed shut behind her. Seraphina turned around. "Grand Witch?"

There was no answer. She was alone. The silence of the library was almost unsettling. Then a faint glow appeared on the shelf beside her. A scroll floated into the air and slowly unfurled. Words appeared across its surface.

I am a key that unlocks the door,

A symbol of knowledge forevermore.

I carry the weight of ancient lore,

Yet I am light enough to soar.

Seraphina read the riddle twice. Then a third time. "A key... knowledge... ancient lore... light enough to soar."

She looked around the shelf. There were books, scrolls, crystals and strange celestial objects. Then she noticed a single feather resting beside the scroll. She picked it up. "A feather."

The library remained silent. Seraphina examined it carefully. "A feather is light enough to soar, yet it can represent knowledge and wisdom through writing. And feathers are also associated with the celestial realm."

The moment she finished speaking, the shelf in front of her moved. A hidden passage appeared. Seraphina smiled. "Interesting."

She stepped through. The trial quickly became more difficult. The library seemed determined to confuse her. Passages appeared and disappeared without warning. Books moved from one shelf to another. Some corridors led her back to places she had already visited, while others ended at walls that had not been there moments before.

Seraphina learned quickly that the library was not testing her memory. It was testing whether she could think. She encountered ancient codes written in forgotten celestial languages. She studied symbols carved into stone and compared them with patterns hidden inside old manuscripts. Eventually, she came across a wall covered in elaborate tapestries.

Seraphina approached them. At first, they appeared to be ordinary works of art. Then she noticed something familiar. The stitches. Her fingers moved gently over the threads. "These patterns..."

They weren't decorative. They formed a sequence. Seraphina's eyes widened. Someone had hidden a message inside the embroidery. She followed the threads carefully, tracing the pattern from one section to another. A constellation emerged. Then another. Together, they formed a map. "A hidden path."

Seraphina followed it. Hours passed. Then more. The celestial light outside the library windows changed from bright blue to deep violet, but Seraphina barely noticed. She was exhausted. Her feet hurt. Her eyes burned from reading.

Yet every time she considered giving up, she remembered why she had entered the library. She wanted to prove that she was more than a princess with a beautiful face and a talent for embroidery. She wanted to be worthy of the responsibility that came with her birth. She wanted to see the world beyond Celestia. And perhaps, somewhere beyond these walls, she wanted to discover who she truly was.

At last, she reached a door. Unlike every other door in the library, this one was completely black. There was no handle. Only a single inscription. Knowledge reveals what the heart refuses to see. Seraphina placed her hand against the door. It opened. Beyond it was a small chamber. In the centre stood a pedestal. And upon that pedestal rested an ancient book. Its cover was dark blue, decorated with silver symbols that seemed to move beneath the surface. Seraphina approached slowly. She could feel something coming from it.

Power.

Not the kind that destroyed. The kind that remembered. "The Book of Forgotten Truths..." She reached for it. The moment her fingers touched the cover, the entire library trembled. A sudden wind swept through the chamber. The pages began turning rapidly. Seraphina pulled her hand away. "What is happening?"

A voice whispered from somewhere inside the book. Not a voice she could understand. Not yet. But the single word sent a chill through her. "Beware..."

The book snapped shut. Everything became still. Then the Grand Witch appeared beside her. Seraphina nearly jumped.

"You passed." The Grand Witch looked at the book. "You relied on your intellect, but that alone would not have been enough. You observed. You questioned. You recognised what others overlooked." She placed a hand gently on Seraphina's shoulder. "And you understood that knowledge is not always found in words."

Seraphina looked down at the ancient book. "What did it mean?"

The Grand Witch did not answer immediately. Instead, she smiled. "Perhaps you will discover that when you are ready."

That answer troubled Seraphina more than she wanted to admit. Still, she bowed her head. "Thank you, Grand Witch. I will carry its wisdom with me."

"Do not carry it lightly." The Grand Witch's voice had become unusually serious. "Some truths have the power to change the fate of kingdoms."

Seraphina looked at the book again. For the first time, she wondered whether passing the trial had truly been a victory.

While Seraphina was struggling through the Library of Wisdom, her younger sister was facing a very different challenge. Ariella stood before the entrance to the Culinary Chamber of Mastery, staring at the enormous kitchen beyond it.

Unlike Seraphina, she looked delighted. There were hundreds of ingredients. Dozens of cooking stations. Magical ovens. Crystal pots. Floating utensils. And enough spices to make any chef lose her mind with happiness. Ariella clasped her hands together. "This is the best trial ever."

The Grand Witch raised an eyebrow. "You have not even started."

"I know." Ariella's eyes sparkled. "That's what makes it exciting."

The Grand Witch sighed. "You are very different from your sister."

"I've been told that."

"And yet you are both equally stubborn."

Ariella smiled. "I'll take that as a compliment."

The Grand Witch shook her head. "Your trial is not simply about cooking. You must prepare a feast capable of healing both body and spirit."

Ariella's smile disappeared. "Both?"

"Yes."

The doors opened. The scent of herbs and spices immediately filled the air. Ariella stepped inside. Before her lay an astonishing collection of celestial ingredients. A golden fruit glowed softly beneath the light. A delicate blue flower rested inside a crystal bowl. Silver leaves shimmered beside it.

The Grand Witch pointed towards them. "The Essence of Vitality. The Serenity Blossom. The Remedyleaf."

Ariella studied each ingredient carefully. "They're powerful."

"Power without understanding can be dangerous."

Ariella nodded. "I know."

"Do you?"

Ariella looked towards her. The Grand Witch's expression remained unreadable. "Then prove it."

The first challenge appeared. A tray of withered plants was placed before her. Their leaves were dry and lifeless. Ariella examined them. "The Essence of Vitality." She picked up the golden fruit. But she did not simply throw it into a pot. She studied its texture, its scent and the magical energy flowing through it. Then she smiled. "I know what to do."

She carefully extracted its essence and combined it with herbs and celestial grains. The moment the mixture touched the withered plants, their leaves began to straighten. Green returned to them. Life returned. Ariella smiled. "One."

The second challenge was more difficult. Several people were brought into the chamber. They were troubled, restless and emotionally exhausted. Ariella looked at them carefully. This time, she did not immediately reach for an ingredient. She spoke to them. "What is troubling you?"

One person lowered his head. Another began to cry. Ariella listened. Only after she understood what they needed did she reach for the blue flower. The Serenity Blossom. She infused its essence into a warm broth with delicate herbs and spices. The effect was subtle. The tension in the room slowly disappeared. The troubled faces softened.

One woman closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "I feel... peaceful."

Ariella smiled. "Sometimes healing begins when someone finally feels heard."

The Grand Witch watched silently. Then came the final challenge. A group of patients was brought before Ariella. Some were suffering from fever. Others had wounds. One could barely stand.

Ariella's playful expression vanished. She understood immediately. This was no longer a cooking competition. People were depending on her. She took the silver herb. The Remedyleaf. For hours, she worked. She prepared broths, herbal dishes and delicate desserts, adjusting every ingredient according to the needs of each patient. There was no wasted movement. No unnecessary decoration. Only purpose. When the final dish was served, the chamber became silent.

One by one, the patients began to recover. Their colour returned. Their breathing steadied. The man who had been unable to stand slowly pushed himself upright. Ariella released a breath she hadn't realised she had been holding.

The Grand Witch finally approached. "You have passed."

Ariella looked at her. "Really?"

"You understand something your sister has yet to learn."

Ariella tilted her head. "What?"

The Grand Witch smiled. "True mastery is not about showing the world what you can do." She placed a hand upon Ariella's shoulder. "It is knowing when your gift is needed."

Ariella looked around the chamber. For once, she had no clever reply. Then she smiled. "I'll remember that."

The Grand Witch nodded. "You will need to."

Ariella frowned. "Why?"

The Grand Witch looked towards the distant windows. Beyond them, Celestia's beautiful sky stretched endlessly across the horizon. "Because the world beyond this realm will not be as kind as Celestia."

Ariella's smile faded. "Is something going to happen?"

The Grand Witch said nothing. That silence was answer enough. Far away, beyond the celestial realm, something was already moving. Something neither sister knew existed. Something that would soon bring love into their lives.

And with it… betrayal.

For now, however, the two sisters remained in Celestia, believing they were preparing for an adventure. They did not yet know they were preparing for a fate neither of them could escape.
