Chapter 41 - The Weight Of Days

On the fifth day inside the Cruentus Mouth , Kei conducted his resource inventory before moving .

He did it manually — pressing each bead through the blood-bond interface without the VDU , reading the numbers directly the way he had read every resource check since entering the forest . The habit was discipline rather than distrust . Knowing his own numbers personally rather than through Epoch's processed output , because the gap between what a processed report told you and what was actually in the bead was the gap that could kill you when it mattered .

 He knew his numbers .

*Food supply* — the dried meat he had carried from Vitium was down to a single day's worth . Not a crisis . A direction . The booklets documented edible flora along the route toward the boundary — specific mosses and root-fungi that posed no chemical hazard and provided sufficient caloric content for sustained travel . He had noted the descriptions when Epoch processed the booklets at the tree line and filed them under contingency . They were no longer contingency .

*Water* — the skin was at a third of capacity . A documented safe source sat approximately half a day's travel ahead at careful pace . Manageable if he reached it before the margin compressed further . He would reach it .

*Antidote pills* — five of six . The one used on the Blood veil root sap contact earlier . Five remaining was sufficient for the remaining distance to the boundary if he maintained his root-surface discipline . His root-surface discipline had not broken once in five days .

*Healing pills* — the Tier 4 and Tier 5 counts in his bracelet were untouched . All of Kervyn's Tier 4 pills untouched . The Tier 6 regeneration pills in Madam Butterfly's bracelet — four , untouched .

He noted the untouched healing pills with the same flat attention he gave every number and moved past them . The untouched state was its own data point — five days of Cruentus Mouth navigation without requiring pharmaceutical wound management . That was not luck .

That was the specific product of six hundred deliberate foot placements and the same number of root-surface checks and the continuous cross-referencing of Perception data against Mimic Moss output that had become the background operating system of his waking hours .

It was also not guaranteed to continue .

He sealed the last bead and sat for a moment on the elevated root platform he had made camp on the previous evening .

The Mouth was the same around him as it had been on day one . That was the precise problem with it — not that it changed but that it did not .

The Mimic Moss cycled its phantom replays from somewhere to his left and somewhere above and somewhere behind him simultaneously , the sounds it produced bearing no reliable relationship to what was actually in those directions . The Bloodveil canopy above was the same dense crimson mass it had been since the treeline , blocking the grey sky , closing the vertical space of the world down to the distance between the forest floor and the lowest branches .

The root systems rose from the dark soil in their same configurations — slick in some sections , clean in others , the difference between them requiring the same sustained attention on day five that it had required on day one without the benefit of novelty to keep the attention sharp .

His Yakuza background had trained him for sustained operational pressure . It had trained him for the kind of environment where the threat was always present and the relief was always partial and the margin was always thinner than you would have chosen . He had operated in that quality of pressure for years before the transmigration and he knew what it did to a person across time — not breaking them , not even close to breaking them , but compressing them . Reducing the space between the operational self and the edge of the operational self until the two were closer than comfort allowed .

Five days of the Mouth had compressed him .

He was functional . He was alert . His Perception remained at its full resolution and his foot placement discipline had not degraded and his Stealth Arts calibration of the Moss's replay patterns was sharper on day five than it had been on day one . None of that was the problem .

The problem was quieter than any of those things and harder to inventory.

It lived in the fraction of a second between perceiving something and assessing it — a delay that had not existed on day one and existed now , small and real and directionally concerning . It lived in the way the Moss's constant acoustic misdirection had stopped feeling like a puzzle to solve and started feeling like a condition to endure.

A condition something that was not quite fear and was not quite exhaustion but occupied the space between them .

He noted all of this with the same professional honesty he applied to his resource inventory and stood up .

Eight things in his body that were not what they had been on day one . All of them manageable . All of them real .

He stepped off the platform and moved .

The route choice came two hours into the morning's navigation .

The path through the Mouth's root system had been channeling him southwestward through a corridor of navigable gaps between root clusters and Sanguivine concentrations that required foot placement decisions rather than directional ones . Then the corridor ended at a natural fork — the root topology and vine density producing two distinct forward options through the forest .

The VDU activated before he had fully processed the choice .

*[ ROUTE ASSESSMENT :

NORTHWEST ARC — DOCUMENTED SHADOW DRIFT SERPENT DENSITY : LOW — SANGUIVINE CONCENTRATION : MODERATE — ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL TRAVEL TIME : 0.5 DAYS — RECOMMENDATION : THIS ROUTE

SOUTHWEST DIRECT — DOCUMENTED SHADOW DRIFT SERPENT DENSITY : HIGH — SANGUIVINE CONCENTRATION : LOW — ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL TRAVEL TIME : 0.7 HOURS ]*

He read it .

The northwest arc added half a day . Half a day was not nothing — his food supply was at one day's worth , his water skin at a third , his antidote pills at five of six , and the boundary was still multiple days ahead . Every half day added to the journey was a half day of resource depletion against a supply that was already operating at reduced margin .

His Perception was also reading something the VDU was not reflecting .

The southwest corridor's (Direct Route) forest floor had a debris distribution pattern he had been calibrating against the Mouth's established environmental signatures for five days . Shadow Drift Serpents in occupation produced a characteristic floor disturbance around their stationary positions — subtle , requiring Perception at 20/20 and five days of continuous floor-reading to detect reliably , but present and consistent when they were there . The southwest corridor's floor did not carry those markers in the density the booklets predicted . The debris distribution was inconsistent with high Serpent occupation .

The booklets were old . The Serpent territory distribution shifted .

" Northwest arc " he said . Not asking . Confirming he had read it .

" Correct . The documented Shadow Drift Serpent density on the southwest direct route exceeds safe navigation parameters given your current resource margin and cognitive baseline ." Epoch paused . " The additional half day on the northwest arc is a manageable cost against a confirmed lower threat density ."

" The floor markers on the southwest corridor are inconsistent with high Serpent density . I am reading lower actual occupation than the booklets document ."

" The booklet data represents historical average density . Actual density varies . Your floor-reading input is not data I can independently confirm ." Another pause . " The documented risk profile of the southwest route combined with your current operational margin makes the northwest arc the lower overall risk choice by the data available to me ."

He registered what that meant and what it did not mean . Epoch's data was the booklets . His data was five days of continuous sensory accumulation in the specific environment the booklets described from the outside . Neither was complete . Both were real .

" I am taking the southwest route " he said . " The floor markers are my data input. Serpent occupation on that corridor is lower than documented . That is what my Perception is reading ."

The silence lasted three seconds .

" Understood " Epoch said . " I will monitor your sensory input continuously and flag any anomaly in real time ."

He moved into the southwest corridor .

 ---

The Shadow Drift Serpent density on the southwest corridor was lower than the booklets documented .

His Perception confirmed it across the first forty minutes of navigation — the floor's debris distribution clean of high-density Serpent occupation markers , two positions flagged at the outer edge of his sensory range and both stationary and well clear of his path , neither requiring more than a minor course adjustment . He moved through the corridor with the same careful deliberate pace he had maintained for five days and the corridor gave him what his instinct had read it would give him .

He was thinking about the water source — documented half a day ahead , the skin at a third — when the Mimic Moss changed its mimic pattern.

He registered it the same way he had registered every Moss anomaly since the tree line — perception flagging the deviation before conscious processing named it . The ambient replay pattern had shifted . Not random displacement of environmental sounds . Something directional — a subtle pull in the acoustic field toward a specific section of forest approximately sixty meters ahead and to his left . Not loud . Not obvious .

The kind of targeted misdirection that would have been indistinguishable from random Moss behavior on day one and was clearly distinct from it on day five .

He stopped .

He did not move . He produced no floor vibration . He read the acoustic field with his full Perception — cross-referencing the Moss's output against his sensory data , looking for the tell that distinguished deliberate targeting from random replay . It was there . The directionality was consistent across three consecutive replay cycles — the same pull , the same target area , the same implicit suggestion that something worth approaching was sixty meters ahead and to his left .

The Moss did not do that on its own .

The VDU activated .

*[ ACOUSTIC ANOMALY DETECTED — MIMIC MOSS REPLAY PATTERN DEVIATION

CONSISTENT DIRECTIONALITY CONFIRMED ACROSS 3 CYCLES

SOURCE : UNIDENTIFIED

BOOKLET MATCH : NONE

RECOMMENDATION : CAUTION — UNABLE TO SPECIFY THREAT ]*

Epoch's first recommendation without data support . He registered the significance of that — she was stepping outside her normal operating parameters , flagging a threat she could not identify or describe . In five days she had never done that .

He read the forest ahead .

Sixty meters — the Blood veil trunks standing in standard configuration , root systems rising from dark soil , Mimic Moss burgundy across the floor between them . Nothing visually distinct at floor level . Nothing his Perception flagged through floor vibration or air displacement as an immediate closing threat .

He looked up instantly, every old Yakuza instinct in him screaming that he had stepped into the sightline of a predator.

The canopy directly above the corridor's midpoint — a section of overlapping crimson leaves and branches between him and the acoustic anomaly source — was not moving the way the surrounding canopy moved . Not still .

Moving but with a rhythm that did not match the ambient movement of the grey sky cycle's air circulation through the leaves . Slow . Deliberate . Repositioning . Matching his stopped position from above rather than moving independently of it .

The flat crimson surface of the Veil Singer's *dorsal body — indistinguishable from the Blood veil canopy in coloration and texture — was directly above the corridor between him and the acoustic anomaly source . Repositioning to maintain overhead positioning above whatever was on the forest floor ahead .

Then he saw what was on the forest floor ahead .

A Hollow Stalker . Not just a general Hollow Stalker but the one he had killed earlier . The flesh deep eightfold lacerations in its huge head oozing out brain matter and pus was a testament of its earlier demise. Moving through the forest sixty meters ahead — its movement signature detectable through the floor vibration , its mass and sound profile consistent with what he had encountered earlier.

Kei stood frozen. Even Epoch had fallen silent. Both realized what they were seeing was correct—yet perversely wrong in a way that made reality itself feel twisted.

The movement was wrong .

The rhythm of weight transfer between its elongated forelimbs was slightly off — a fraction too slow in the recovery phase between steps , a fraction too deliberate in each foot placement . His Perception had memorized the Hollow Stalker's gait signature from the territorial dispute earlier with the precision that five days of continuous floor-vibration reading produced . This gait matched that signature in frequency but not in character . More uniform in its deviation than an injured creature's compensation pattern . The same fractional wrongness at every step rather than localized to a specific point .

As if each movement was being produced by something that understood the pattern intellectually but was not generating it from the inside .

He looked at the creature's dorsal surface .

A small compact shape — barely visible at sixty meters in the Mouth's darkness riding the dead Hollow Stalker's back . A Dead Caller*.

Eight extraordinarily finesse manipulator appendages threaded into the musculature of the dead Hollow Stalker along the spine at multiple points — puppeteering the approximation of movement from outside rather than generating it from within .

The Mimic Moss had been carrying the reanimated zombie stalker's sounds and directing them toward him with consistent deliberate pull across three replay cycles .

He was looking at a lure .

 He looked up again .

The Veil Singer's ventral sensory organ shifted — adjusting to track his upward gaze . The flat body above him had been repositioning since before he stopped walking . It had known Kei was in the corridor before he identified the Moss anomaly . It had been tracking his approach from above through the floor vibration his beast paws had been generating for forty minutes of southwest corridor navigation .

Kei had approximately three seconds before it reached optimal pulse range directly overhead .

His mind produced the assessment faster than his operational discipline could filter it — not the clean tactical calculation of his earlier standoff with the two Hollow Stalker but the compressed , fatigued reaction of a being five days into resource depletion who had just walked into a trap on a route he had chosen against his partner's recommendation .

His Thrill Point was at 1/5 . His Muscle attribute was at 15 . The throw he needed to make was upward into near-total darkness at a target thirty meters above him whose exact position he could only resolve through Perception rather than sight .

A canopy throw required more than Deftness . The upward arc against gravity demanded muscular force that a horizontal throw did not . His Deftness at 18 was at the forked dagger's prerequisite threshold and gave him the accuracy . His Muscle at 15 was the limiting factor — the specific physical constraint his fatigued body was flagging in the moment between identifying the threat and responding to it .

Kei spent the Thrill Point .

Not as a considered decision . As a reflex — the fatigued mind reaching for the most immediately relevant lever available without fully processing the downstream cost of spending the only accumulated point he had .

*[ THRILL POINTS : 1/5 — SPENT

MUSCLE : 15 → 16

THRILL POINTS : 0/5 ]*

He drew the forked dagger .

The throw was upward — not the flat sidearm mechanics of the Sanguivine cluster throw or the precision forelimb strike against Stalker Two of his earlier confrontation. Upward , against gravity , into near-total darkness . His Deftness reading the Veil Singer's repositioning arc and calculating the overhead coordinate where its flat body would be in the time the dagger needed to reach canopy height . Not where it was . Where it would be .

He threw on the three-count of that calculation .

He heard it connect .

A wet deep resistance — the forked dagger's green outer blades finding purchase in the Veil Singer's ventral surface and driving through the flat body mass . Not a clean killing strike — the anatomy unknown , the vital organs unlocated by any booklet data Epoch had processed , the throw itself the product of Muscle 16 and Deftness 18 in near-total darkness rather than the optimal conditions of a prepared engagement .

He summoned the dagger back.

It pulled free of the ventral surface and returned to his grip — the return flight passing through the open wound a second time as it cleared , the double passage enlarging the blooded wound considerably beyond the initial entry point .

The Veil Singer did not retreat .

The canopy above Kei convulsed — the wrong-movement tell becoming violent agitated motion as the wounded creature registered the strike across its full sensory apparatus . Its response was immediate and brutal ,nothing like the lure behavior that had preceded it .

The acoustic pulse hit him before he had finished processing the convulsion of the creature.

Not a lure . Not atmospheric misdirection . A focused directed blast from the ventral mouth cavity — air compressing inward around his position and releasing in a single violent pulse that arrived as a physical force rather than a sound . It took him off his foot placement and drove him sideways and downward — his left shoulder connecting with the Blood veil trunk to his left with the full transferred force of the pulse behind it .

He came off the trunk and back to standing in the same motion — the impact registered , the injury registered , the shoulder functional but wrong in a way that flagged itself immediately through the specific quality of pain that accompanied structural damage rather than surface contact .

The Zombie Stalker was no longer moving in lure patterns .

The Dead Caller had abandoned the lateral navigation pace of a positioned lure and shifted to full frontal manipulation speed — all eight manipulator appendages driving the reanimated musculature of the Hollow Stalker at a rate that the lure deployment had not required . The wrongness of its movement intensified dramatically as the Dead Caller pushed & manipulated the dead carcass of the Hollow stalker with utmost precision — the fractional deviation of each step becoming a pronounced lurching quality as control degraded under speed .

It was covering ground toward him regardless .

Above him the Veil Singer was repositioning — not retreating , coming lower , the wounded flat body moving through the canopy with an agitation that had replaced the precise deliberate overhead tracking of minutes ago . Its ventral sensory organs were all oriented toward him now . Not one . All of them . The creature's full sensory attention concentrated on the thing that had put a wound through its body .

Kei was being hunted from above and below simultaneously .

His Stealth Arts training was producing no viable output — the Veil Singer had his acoustic signature from forty minutes of corridor navigation , the Dead Caller had the reanimated Hollow Stalker tracking his floor vibration , and his left shoulder was generating a specific pain signal that was consuming processing capacity his tactical assessment needed . He could not hide from either component of the system . He could not fight both components simultaneously . He could not retreat through the Sanguivine clusters behind him at the speed the closing distances required .

The Veil Singer's second pulse was forming — he could feel the air around him beginning its pre-pulse compression , the subtle atmospheric change that preceded the directed blast .

Epoch's silence broke .

" Ravage pill . Now . Full withdrawal . Southwest — forty meters — root platform at your nine o'clock — move ."

He took the Ravage pill before the sentence finished .

He did not process her instruction through his own assessment . He did not evaluate it against his instinct or his tactical reading of the environment or his professional discipline about acting on another being's recommendation without independent verification .

His cognitive processing at day five , with a shoulder injury , a Veil Singer's pre-pulse compression building around him combined with the Dead Caller's puppeteered ground attack , was running at a speed that Epoch's assessment had already exceeded .

He moved , no he ran.

The boost (ravage pill) hit his system in the same instant his feet found their direction — Muscle surging from 16 to 19 , Deftness from 18 to 21 , his body responding to demands he placed on it with a speed and force his baseline could not have produced . He moved at the fastest pace his Stealth Arts training could generate without crossing the vibration threshold that activated the Sanguivines — not running , controlled fast , the boost making controlled fast feel like something different from what it had been at baseline.

The Veil Singer's second pulse released behind him .

The targeting degraded by the ventral wound — the pulse dispersing across a wider area rather than concentrating at his position , the directed blast hitting the corridor floor ten meters behind him and triggering the Sanguivine cluster on his left in a mass activation that dropped vine mass across a wide section of the corridor he had just vacated .

The reanimated Hollow stalker hit the outer edge of the activating Sanguivines .

The Dead Caller could not navigate the reanimated carcass through the dropping vine mass at the manipulation speed it had been running — the precision required to thread a dead creature's forelimbs through actively constricting vines simultaneously in three dimensions exceeded its coordination capacity at that pace . The reanimated body slowed . The Sanguivines found its right forelimb . The constriction began .

He had thirty meters of corridor between himself and the system's immediate pursuit capability .

Twenty .

The root platform was where Epoch had said it would be — elevated off the forest floor at his nine o'clock relative to his withdrawal direction , the root structure rising above the floor vibration plane that the reanimated Stalker navigated by . He came up onto it without breaking his movement rhythm — the Ravage boost making the elevation a single motion rather than a two-step process .

He looked back .

The reanimated Stalker was partially held in the Sanguivine constriction — the Dead Caller working its manipulator appendages against the vine resistance , trying to produce the struggle-motion that would drive the constriction tighter and potentially break it through the creature's mass . Above the corridor the Veil Singer was repositioning again — the wounded flat body moving in the canopy with a pattern that tracked the direction of Kei's withdrawal rather than his current elevated position . Its territory had a boundary . He was approaching that boundary .

Then the reanimated Stalker found a window .

The Dead Caller's manipulator appendages shifted from anti-constriction management to a single directed strike — all eight appendages momentarily abandoning the locomotion coordination and the vine resistance worked to concentrate their precision on one targeted movement from the reanimated left forelimb . The strike came upward toward the elevated platform — the Dead Caller's fine control finding the joint angle and the trajectory in a single coordinated burst .

It connected with Kei's left shoulder .

The same shoulder the pulse impact had already damaged .

Not a full strike — the Ravage boost's enhanced reaction speed had moved him fractionally from the strike's optimal contact point in the same instant his Perception registered the movement beginning . A glancing connection rather than a direct hit . The reanimated forelimb's elongated tip catching the shoulder across its width at an angle rather than driving straight through .

It was enough .

The wound opened across the shoulder's upper surface — a diagonal tear four centimeters long and deep enough to matter . His left arm's mobility degraded immediately — not lost , the structural damage not reaching the joint beneath , but compromised in the specific way that a shoulder wound compromised a left arm's function when the left hand was the hand that held the forked dagger .

He felt the dagger's grip shift in his left hand as the shoulder's supporting musculature reported the damage .

He switched the dagger to his right hand .

Reversed hands — his right palm facing outward in the rakshasa anatomical default . The grip was not wrong but it was different from the five days of left-hand habituation he had built since first drawing the weapon . He filed the adjustment and reached into Madam Butterfly's alchemy bead with his compromised left hand — the movement producing a specific pain signal that his processing noted and did not act on beyond the noting .

He pressed the Tier 6 regeneration pill directly against the shoulder wound surface — the typical application method for surface lacerations producing faster localized closure than systemic administration . The compound began its work within thirty seconds . He could feel the tissue response starting at the wound's edges — not painless , the accelerated closure process generating its own specific sensation , but clean and directional and moving toward resolution rather than away from it .

He checked the Veil Singer's position .

It had reached the boundary of its territory — or rather the boundary of whatever repositioned territory it had established since their first encounter three days ago . It was not following further . The flat body in the canopy above the corridor had stopped its tracking movement and held at a fixed overhead position , its ventral sensory organs still oriented toward him but no longer adjusting to follow .

The reanimated Stalker's partial constriction was holding — the Dead Caller managing but not breaking the Sanguivine binding , the reanimated body's remaining free forelimb still striking at the vine mass without the coordination precision of the single directed strike it had produced while both the locomotion management and the vine resistance work were briefly suspended .

He was on the elevated platform twenty meters beyond the Sanguivine cluster . The wound was closing . The boost had approximately thirty minutes remaining before the fatigue crash arrived . He was alive .

He sat with his back against the Blood veil trunk at the platform's edge and let his breathing return to Stealth Arts pace .

The shoulder wound's closure was progressing at the rate the Tier 6 compound produced — faster than natural healing by several orders of magnitude , slower than he would have chosen . He could feel the new tissue forming beneath the pill's application point . The left arm's mobility remained compromised for the duration of the closure process and would return to full function when the structural repair reached the supporting musculature .

He checked the VDU .

He read it in full .

Zero Thrill Points . One Muscle point purchased at the cost of the only accumulated point he had , for a throw that wounded rather than killed and triggered a retaliation that had required a Ravage pill and a Tier 6 healing pill and a shoulder wound to survive . Three Tier 6 regeneration pills remaining from four . Seven Ravage pills remaining from eight . The boost running out in twenty-eight minutes and the fatigue crash coming behind it .

He sat with all of that and did not add commentary to it .

After a moment he spoke .

" The route ."

" Your instinct about the Shadow Drift Serpent density was correct " Epoch said . " The southwest corridor had lower actual Serpent occupation than the booklets documented . You read that accurately ."

" And walked into a Veil Singer and Dead Caller trap on the same corridor ."

[ Author's Note : Logically Kei & Epoch at this stage should not know what these creatures are called as they are experiencing these for the first time but for maintaining the rhythm & pace of the story ,shameless author has granted them this knowledge, hope the readers also shamelessly forgives me for it :) ]

" The Veil Singer's arboreal mobility was not a variable in my assessment framework or yours . It could not have been predicted from available data on either route ." A pause that had a different quality from her standard processing pauses — shorter , less certain at its edges . " I am updating my threat model to include arboreal mobility for undocumented species . That variable is now in my framework ."

He looked at his left hand — the grip on the forked dagger still in his right , the left hand resting against the root platform surface with the Tier 6 pill held against the shoulder wound above it .

" You updated your model from the encounter " he said .

" I update my model from every encounter . That is what processing means ."

He did not respond to that immediately . The shoulder wound's closure was reaching the deeper tissue layer — the sensation changing in character as the compound's work moved from surface to structure . His left arm's mobility beginning to return at the margins .

" The Ravage pill call " he said .

Epoch did not respond immediately .

" It was the only logical sequence given the available inputs " she said finally . " Your cognitive margin at the time of the encounter was insufficient for the processing speed the situation required . My processing speed was not . The logical allocation was for me to produce the sequence and for you to execute it ."

" That is not what you said ." He looked at the VDU — the boost countdown at twenty-six minutes .

" You said — Ravage pill . Now . Full withdrawal . Southwest forty meters — root platform at your nine — move . That is not a logical sequence delivered in optimal format . That is —"

He stopped .

Epoch did not fill the pause .

He looked at the forest beyond the platform — the corridor where the Sanguivine activation was still holding the reanimated Stalker in partial constriction , the Veil Singer stationary at its territory boundary above , the Dead Caller managing a dead body in a vine trap twenty meters away .

" We will discuss it " he said . " When I am not managing a Ravage crash in twenty-five minutes ."

" Yes " Epoch said . Simply.

He sat on the elevated root platform with the boost running its countdown and the shoulder wound closing and the forest continuing its indifferent work around him , and the thing he had just survived settling into his body the way close calls settles — not as relief , not yet , but as a specific physical awareness of the margin between what had happened and what had almost happened .

It was a very small margin .

He noted it and held it and did not put words around it .

The VDU updated once , unprompted .
