The question settled into me, sharp and unwelcome.
What if this was meant to destroy?
I crouched near the pulsing mass at the center of the room, careful not to cross the invisible line of risk. Up close, the vines were wrong in so many ways.
Their growth followed patterns of tight spirals layered over larger ones, repeating with purpose. It looked less like a plant and more like a blueprint made flesh.
The vibration beneath my glove wasn't random either.
It had rhythm.

"I want samples from the root core, the surface shoots, and soil at five-foot intervals," I said.
