I looked at him with pleading eyes, hoping he could see the desperation in my heart. He was my only hope. The Minister was fading fast, and I was running out of time.
He sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. I could see the internal struggle on his face. He wanted to help, I knew he did, but he was also scared – scared for me, and maybe, I realized with a jolt, scared of what this whole mess could expose.
"Alright," he said finally, his voice resigned but firm. "Tell me everything. But Alayna, you have to promise me something. This is going to get dangerous, fast. If I tell you to back off, you back off. No arguments. Promise?"
"I promise," I said, my voice filled with sincerity. "I'll be careful. I won't do anything reckless." Reckless, maybe. But I wouldn't back down.
