Dr. Ramirez sighed, running a hand through his perfectly coiffed hair. "A few more hours," he repeated, his voice weary. "You're asking me to risk my own career, my own reputation, for your… 'potential' breakthrough. Do you have any idea the kind of pressure I'm under right now? and this… this stunt of yours has only made things worse."
He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "Tell me, Dr. Alayna, what am I supposed to do? How can I justify your actions to the board? How can I explain why one of the doctor disregard hospital protocols and work with a retired physician in a secret lab?"
I swallowed hard, my mind racing. I had to find a way to convince him, to give him something he could use to defend me.
Suddenly, the door to Dr. Ramirez's office swung open, and Dr. Evans strode in, his face determined.
