"Alright," Laila said, her voice firm. "I'm coming down there."
"Laila, no! Don't be silly! Just get yourself out of here! My leg is already messed up, but you can still climb out! Go get help!"
"But... the puppy..." Laila protested, her voice laced with concern.
"Laila, forget the puppy! It's just an animal! You're what's important! Please, just go! I'll figure something out." Even as I said the words, I wasn't sure I believed them. But I couldn't let Laila risk her safety for me.
There was a long pause. I hated this. I hated putting this on her.
"I... I don't know, Alayna," she said, her voice small and scared. "What if something's out there? What if I can't find my way back? It's getting dark..."
She was right. Sending her alone was incredibly risky. Especially if whatever set these snares was still around.
