Grandmother Halton walked to me and took my hands. "You've been very brave, Alayna."
"I just want to protect my family."
"I know." She squeezed my fingers. "That's why you deserve to enter the Halton family."
The warmth of her words wrapped around me like a blanket. But even as she spoke, a shadow moved across the window. The morning light shifted. And I realized we had been waiting all night. Minerva was still upstairs.
Dafa straightened from the window. "What's the plan?"
"We confront her." My voice was steady, but I could see the tension in his shoulders. His jaw was tight. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides. He had been holding himself together for hours, but I could feel his rage simmering just beneath the surface.
