I climbed to the attic. The wooden steps creaked under my feet, each one a familiar groan.

All of my bones felt like they were going to break.

This was my room. My sanctuary. The place I came to when the world became too heavy.

The door at the top was open. I stepped inside.

The room was small but cozy. A sloping ceiling with a round window that faced the east. My bed was unmade from the night before. My grandmother's quilt was tangled at the foot. Books were stacked on the nightstand. A half-empty cup of tea sat beside them, cold now.

I kicked off my shoes and sat on the edge of the bed.

All my bones felt like they were going to break after that long day. From watching my father's face crumple when he confessed. From seeing my mother's tears. From hearing Dafa's voice crack when he talked about his mother.

From carrying the weight of secrets that were never mine to carry.

I lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling.
