The corridor was still chaos when I stepped out of Mrs. Kusuma's room.

Nurses rushed past with clipboards. A doctor argued with a pharmacist about dosages. A family huddled in the corner, crying. The fluorescent lights hummed their endless, indifferent song.

I leaned against the wall for a moment, letting the cool tile press against my back. The lightness in my chest from the patient's words was already being chased away by the weight of the night. There were still patients to see. Charts to complete. Families to comfort.

One foot in front of the other.

I pushed off the wall and walked toward the nurses' station.

That's when I saw him.

Dr. Evan was standing by the station, his back to me, his shoulders hunched. His scrubs were wrinkled, his hair disheveled. He looked like he had been running his hands through it all night.

He turned as I approached.

His face was pale. Dark circles hung under his eyes. He looked like I felt exhausted, drained, barely holding on.
