"I think you chose to be angry instead of brave. I think you chose to blame me instead of looking at yourself." I said.
"You don't know what it's like."
"Then tell me."
She opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.
"I've been trying," she whispered. "But you won't listen. You just keep attacking me."
I felt a surge of frustration rise in my chest. Hot. Bitter.
"Attacking you?" I stepped closer. "Monica, I've been standing here for the past ten minutes, trying to reach you. I've been patient. I've been calm. I've been listening. But every time I think we're getting somewhere, you throw another accusation at me. Even Nurse Davis called you out. Stop embarrassing yourself, Monica."
The words left my mouth before I could stop them. They were harsher than I intended, sharper. But I was tired. Tired of the accusations. Tired of the walls. Tired of watching her drown and refuse the hand reaching out.
