I stared at my chessboard and hummed, a low, contemplative sound. I sat in my room, doning my bed-time robes. Across from me, Yukihina sat perfectly still in a upholstered chair, her black hair, like polished obsidian, shimmered in the soft glow cast by the lanterns. Her expression was, as always, unreadable, like a smooth sheet of untouched frost. She had just made a daring move, sacrificing a rook to open a line of attack against my king.
A lesser player would see it as reckless, perhaps even a blunder. But Yukihina... she never moved without a purpose, even if it was hard for others to figure out what was on her mind. I leaned back in my own plush chair, the velvet cushions warm like blankets. This game, this war, it was all about calculated risks and exploiting vulnerabilities.
