Star Shine Academy barely had time to acknowledge their first victory.
The arena reset. Shattered stone dissolved into particles of light as the terrain shifted once more.
Announcements echoed overhead, confirming the next match in Pool 1.
Star Shine Academy vs Greyfield School.
Unlike Crimson Bastion's brute aggression, Greyfield was known for patience and surgical precision.
The terrain selection locked in: Tropical Forest. Towering trees erupted across the battlefield, their thick canopies weaving together to block much of the overhead light. Visibility dropped immediately.
The objective illuminated in bold letters: Escort. Star Shine would serve as the advancing team. Greyfield would intercept and eliminate.
A humanoid puppet construct materialized at Star Shine's starting point. It could walk and respond to simple directional commands. But its durability was intentionally low.
If the puppet sustained critical damage, the match would end instantly.
Greyfield's team had already vanished into the forest depths. Unlike Crimson Bastion, they did not posture openly. Their strength lay in layered contingencies and calculated strikes.
Ambush suited them.
Star Shine formed a tight diamond around the puppet. Two at the front. One guarding the rear. Alex took the forward-left angle—positioned to react to sudden movement from either flank.
The forest pressed inward from all sides.
Dense thickets offered perfect concealment. Uneven terrain disrupted clean footing. Elevated roots and low stone ridges provided vantage points—but revealed no trace of the enemy.
Greyfield would not waste energy on reckless confrontation. They would probe, test spacing, exploit a single overextension.
The destination marker glowed faintly in the distance, partially obscured by trunks and hanging vines. They began moving forward, yet the forest remained silent.
They advanced cautiously, maintaining tight spacing as the construct moved at a measured pace.
Leaves crunched softly underfoot. The canopy swallowed most ambient sound. Every step forward felt like stepping deeper into unseen territory.
The ambush came without warning.
A figure burst from the undergrowth ahead, blade flashing toward the front line—and in the same instant, a volley of arrows sliced through the air, every shaft aimed at the puppet.
"Above!" someone shouted.
Alex moved before the word finished echoing. His sword blurred through the air, splitting one arrow cleanly while deflecting another. A third shattered against his blade, splintering harmlessly against the forest floor.
Without hesitation, he surged forward.
The attacker from the front attempted to press the advantage, trusting the arrows to create an opening. Instead, he found Alex already inside his guard. Two swift exchanges later, a clean strike landed across his chest, eliminating him instantly.
Greyfield's assault, however, had never been singular.
From both flanks, two more figures emerged from behind thick tree trunks, blades angling inward toward the formation's exposed sides.
"Left and right!" the rear guard called.
Two members of Star Shine shifted just enough to intercept, meeting the attackers in the narrow forest gaps. Steel clashed amid roots and uneven ground, their movements constrained by dense brush and low branches.
The final member remained beside the puppet, spear spinning in tight defensive arcs to intercept stray arrows. But the archer did not miss.
From somewhere high within the canopy, shafts continued to whistle downward—precise, patient, relentless. Each shot targeted joints and weak angles, never wasted.
Alex glanced upward, scanning through the overlapping lattice of branches.
There was no visible silhouette. No obvious perch. The canopy was layered perfectly for concealment, granting the sniper mobility and cover in equal measure.
The flanking opponents were manageable. Individually, they posed little threat to him.
The archer was the real problem.
Another arrow streaked toward the puppet's shoulder joint. The spear-wielding teammate barely managed to deflect it in time.
"If this keeps up—" he muttered.
Alex understood the dilemma instantly. He could pursue the archer, but doing so would leave the puppet vulnerable. With only one defender remaining at its side, a coordinated push could end the match in seconds. Charging blindly into elevated cover would also favor the sniper.
Time was slipping.
A sharp cry cut through the trees.
One of Star Shine's flank defenders vanished in a flash of light—eliminated. The remaining teammate was now forced backward, fighting two opponents alone.
If Alex had access to magic, the match would already be over.
Another arrow flew.
Alex's eyes sharpened. Without a word, he seized the spear from the teammate guarding the puppet.
The archer released again.
Alex did not track the arrow itself. He tracked the space it emerged from. A faint tremor in the leaves. A subtle flicker between layered branches.
In one fluid motion, he rotated and hurled the spear into the canopy. It tore through foliage in a straight line. There was no time for the archer to even react before being eliminated.
The pressure on the flanks shifted instantly.
One of the two remaining Greyfield attackers lunged desperately toward the puppet, hoping to salvage the ambush, but he didn't make it three steps before Alex intercepted him, his blade striking with decisive precision.
Another flash—and he was eliminated.
The final opponent faltered soon after, overwhelmed by Star Shine's remaining defender once the pressure shifted.
Then the announcement rang out across the arena.
"Victory—Star Shine Academy."
Two consecutive wins secured six points in Pool 1.
With Greyfield defeated, Star Shine Academy advanced to the semifinals.
◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆
The final match of Pool 1 concluded with a tense showdown between Crimson Bastion Academy and Greyfield School.
Having observed Greyfield's earlier performance, Crimson Bastion entered the field prepared, their strategy clearly adjusted to counter the escort formations they had studied. Greyfield possessed the same advantage of observation, but preparation alone could not bridge the gap in execution.
Crimson Bastion's trademark aggression defined the match from the outset. They pressed forward relentlessly, denying Greyfield the space needed to stabilize their formation.
Though Greyfield attempted to rotate their defenders and draw the fight into a prolonged skirmish, Crimson Bastion steadily forced errors and capitalized on every hesitation. In the end, their calculated pressure secured the victory.
With that result, the pool standings were finalized.
In Pool 2, Iron Ward Academy emerged on top with four points—one win and one draw. Their style was methodical and defense-oriented, favoring endurance over explosive offense. While not as flashy as the other academies, their consistency secured a place in the semifinals.
Pool 3 belonged to Blitz War Institute. Two clean victories earned them six points, and their speed-centered tactics once again demonstrated why they were last year's champions.
Crimson Bastion Academy, with three points, claimed the remaining semifinal slot as the second-highest contender from their pool.
Thus, the semifinal matchups were set: Star Shine Academy vs. Iron Ward Academy, and Blitz War Institute vs. Crimson Bastion Academy.
The first semifinal mission was suppression.
From the moment the signal was given, Star Shine Academy seized control of the tempo. Iron Ward attempted to establish a defensive perimeter, but Alex disrupted their formation before it could solidify. He moved decisively, exploiting even the smallest gaps and forcing isolated engagements rather than allowing them to function as a cohesive unit.
Alex personally eliminated three opponents, securing a decisive victory for Star Shine Academy and sending them to the finals.
The second semifinal drew far greater attention from the audience.
Blitz War Institute and Crimson Bastion Academy—last year's first-place and second-place finishers—stood opposite each other once again.
The mission was capture. At the center of the arena stood the designated control zone, and the rules were simple: whichever team maintained control for more than three cumulative minutes would claim victory.
The match unfolded as a clash of philosophies. Crimson Bastion sought to overwhelm the point with brute pressure, anchoring themselves through sheer dominance. Blitz War, however, relied on mobility. They darted in and out of the zone, contesting control at critical moments and refusing to be pinned down.
The timer fluctuated constantly as possession shifted back and forth. Several times, Crimson Bastion appeared close to locking it down, only for Blitz War to break through at the last second with coordinated bursts of speed. The tension in the arena mounted with every reset.
In the final exchange, Blitz War executed a perfectly timed rotation, isolating two of Crimson Bastion's members before reclaiming the capture zone. Their control ticked past the required threshold by the narrowest of margins, sealing a victory in a match that could have gone either way.
With that, the Group A final was set.
Star Shine Academy vs. Blitz War Institute — the reigning champions against the rising challengers. Only one would walk away as Group A's victor.
