When a man and a woman book a hotel room, it's always the man who pays. So the staff looked at Adrian Desmond, expecting him to swipe his card or pay in cash, but Adrian didn't move at all, showing no intention of paying.
The hotel staff thought Adrian hadn't heard, so they repeated, "Sir, that'll be 103 dollars. Would you like to pay with card or cash?"
Adrian saw that Sienna Johnson wasn't moving and asked, "Card or cash?"
"No money!" Sienna replied.
Adrian had just come from the police station and didn't have his wallet with him; how could he pay the room fee?
"How can you not have money?"
"I just don't!" Even if she had money, she wouldn't pay for the room.
Sienna didn't want to book a hotel room with Adrian; her family knew Adrian was coming back today and were waiting at home.
Pauline Briggs had even personally cooked a lavish dinner. Eating out was already inappropriate, and booking a hotel room would be utterly disgraceful for Sienna.
"How could you not have money?"
