Nina Rice looked at Nia's pale smiling face, her tears blurring her vision.
"Nia's gone?" Jane Sampson asked in disbelief.
"She's gone." Nina wiped away her tears. "The child is gone."
It was all too sudden.
Only a few short minutes.
That suddenness made Jane feel like she'd just had a dream.
A nightmare.

You stumble and struggle a few times; everyone wants to get through it, everyone thinks they can get through it.
Nia was far too sensible. The doctors and nurses here were all very familiar with her. When they saw that she had passed away, even they, who were used to life and death, had reddened eye sockets.
"The child is already gone, please accept our condolences." The nurse held up Nia's mom, who was on the verge of crying herself into a faint, and comforted her. "Look, the child was still smiling when she left. She went very peacefully, she didn't suffer."
