In a practical sense, the combination between different elements and the use of combination magic was notoriously tricky. Getting the power balance exactly right to perform something devastatingly amazing was difficult enough. This was true even when a mage was in complete control, able to instantaneously adjust and figure out how to perfectly balance the flow of mana in real-time.
