Chapter 13 - [Chapter 11]

----

Continuing with the aftermath at home, Kayden's "not-a-cat" crisis, and Asuka quietly confirming the funniest possible truth with her Six Eyes.

The next day, Jiwoo was sentenced to the couch.

Not by a doctor.

Not by Kayden.

By Asuka.

Which meant there was no appeal.

"I can walk a little," Jiwoo said.

"No."

"I'm not using my ability."

"No."

"I can at least get water—"

Asuka placed a glass of water on the small table beside him before he finished speaking.

Jiwoo stared at it.

Then looked at her.

She looked back calmly.

"You were saying?"

Jiwoo opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Kayden, sitting near the sliding glass door, did not even turn around.

"Give up. Your sister is scarier than most awakened organizations."

Asuka blinked.

"Thank you."

"That was not a compliment."

"It sounded like one."

Jiwoo smiled softly from the couch.

His broken leg was extended carefully over a pillow, wrapped and stabilized. Asuka had healed enough that the pain no longer made his breath catch every time he moved, but the bone still needed time. More importantly, his energy pathways needed rest after Delein's attacks had disrupted them.

Jiwoo understood that.

Mostly.

But sitting still was hard.

Especially with cats around.

The black cat had stationed itself beside his good leg like a nurse. The tabby was loafed on the back of the couch. The black-and-white one had decided Jiwoo's blanket belonged to it now. The grey scarred cat rested nearby, closer than before, though it still flinched at sudden noises.

Jiwoo held a cat toy in one hand, a little feather wand Asuka had found in one of the drawers.

He flicked it carefully.

The black-and-white cat pounced.

Jiwoo laughed.

"Good job."

The tabby's tail twitched.

Jiwoo flicked the toy again.

The tabby lunged.

The grey cat lifted its head, watching with wary curiosity.

Jiwoo softened immediately.

"You can play too, if you want."

The grey cat only blinked.

"That's okay," Jiwoo said. "You can just watch."

Asuka sat at the kitchen table, laptop open, one earbud in, reviewing coursework she had already finished while occasionally glancing at Jiwoo's leg. Her force control moved quietly beneath her skin, layered and concealed, steady as breathing.

Kayden, however, was not paying attention to Jiwoo.

Or Asuka.

Or the cats.

Kayden was staring through the glass sliding door with the expression of a great philosopher confronting the mysteries of existence.

The mysteries of existence, unfortunately, involved paws.

His paws.

He lifted one.

Studied it.

Lowered it.

Lifted the other.

Studied that too.

His tail flicked.

His ears twitched.

He hated that he had ears capable of twitching.

The transformation last night had failed.

No.

Not failed.

Temporarily reverted.

That was different.

He had managed human form. Fully. Power restored enough to transform, use spatial isolation, and obliterate a lower-level threat without difficulty.

Then he had returned to this body.

This round, orange, soft, ridiculous body.

Kayden narrowed his eyes at his reflection in the glass.

It stared back at him.

Fat.

Furry.

Not intimidating enough.

Mostly.

The problem was deeper than a physical transformation.

He could feel it now that he was paying attention properly.

This was not merely a disguise.

Not a shell.

Not a compressed exterior wrapped around his true form.

His entire biological structure had shifted.

Organs. Muscles. Nervous system. Instinctive responses. Sensory input.

He had not become a man trapped in the shape of a cat.

He had become a cat.

A real cat.

Kayden's tail lashed once.

That explained several things.

The heightened smell.

The involuntary ear movements.

The way sunlight felt more comfortable than it had any right to.

The way fish tasted—

No.

He stopped that thought.

Immediately.

He did not like cat food.

He had standards.

He had dignity.

He was Kayden Break.

The fact that certain foods designed for cats were biologically appealing to his current body was irrelevant.

Completely irrelevant.

Kayden's eyes narrowed further.

If the transformation was this complete, then turning back would not be as simple as increasing output. His ability had not merely cloaked him. It had rewritten his body according to a new template.

A perfect transformation.

Of course.

His abilities were perfect.

That was simply how great he was.

Kayden's posture straightened.

Naturally, even when forced into a humiliating survival method, his power had executed it flawlessly. A lesser awakener might have produced a flawed form, unstable and weak. Kayden Break had created a complete living body capable of passing every inspection, recovering from severe injury, and maintaining power circulation despite massive structural change.

He was amazing.

Obviously.

His ears perked with pride.

Then he froze.

Because that still left one question.

How was he supposed to turn back permanently?

Kayden stared harder at the glass.

His reflection stared back.

Roundly.

He sat in silence for several seconds.

Then a strange little laugh escaped him.

"Heh."

Jiwoo glanced over from the couch.

Asuka's fingers paused on her keyboard.

Kayden's laugh grew.

"Heh heh."

Jiwoo blinked.

"Mr. Kayden?"

Kayden's shoulders shook with obnoxious confidence.

"Heh heh heh."

Asuka slowly looked up.

Kayden lifted his chin.

"There is nothing to worry about."

No one had asked.

Jiwoo tilted his head.

"About what?"

Kayden ignored that.

"Even if my current body is more complete than expected, my power is recovering. Once I regain enough strength, returning to my original form will be simple."

Jiwoo smiled.

"That's good."

"Of course it is good. Did you expect me to be trapped like this?"

Jiwoo hesitated.

Kayden's eyes sharpened.

"Do not answer."

Jiwoo shut his mouth.

Asuka, however, was looking at him differently.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Understanding.

Kayden did not like that look.

"What?"

Asuka blinked once.

"Nothing."

"You know something."

"I observed something."

"That is worse."

Jiwoo flicked the cat toy again.

The black cat leapt for it and missed.

The feather bounced once.

Twice.

Kayden's eyes tracked it.

Against his will.

The feather swayed left.

His pupils widened.

The feather twitched right.

His body lowered slightly.

Asuka saw it.

Her blue eyes sharpened faintly.

For once, the overwhelming flood of information from the Six Eyes was useful for something other than combat, energy analysis, biological mapping, technique breakdown, and calculating danger before it bloomed.

It was useful for seeing something deeply, profoundly stupid.

Kayden's awakened energy was Kayden.

Vast. Electric. Sharp. Proud.

But the body wrapped around it?

A cat.

Not a false form.

Not illusion.

Not partial transformation.

A biologically complete cat body with real feline instincts running beneath the surface like reflexive script. The muscles reacted before intention. The eyes tracked motion. The paws flexed at small, quick movements.

The taste preferences.

The sunlight.

The sleeping.

The irritation at being touched unless he decided he liked it.

The fish.

It all made sense.

Asuka's mouth curved slightly.

Kayden's head snapped toward her.

"Do not."

"I did not say anything."

"You are going to."

"I might not."

"You will."

Jiwoo, unaware of the silent war unfolding, flicked the toy a little higher.

The feather bounced into Kayden's field of vision.

His head turned.

Fast.

Too fast.

Jiwoo blinked.

"Mr. Kayden?"

Kayden's body tensed.

No.

Absolutely not.

He was not going to—

The feather darted.

Kayden launched.

He crossed the floor in a blur of orange, paws striking the ground, body twisting midair with terrifying feline precision.

He caught the feather between both front paws.

Jiwoo gasped.

Asuka's eyes widened just a fraction.

Kayden landed.

The room went silent.

The feather toy dangled from Jiwoo's hand.

Kayden had it pinned against the floor.

His claws were lightly hooked into the fabric.

His tail was raised.

His pupils were wide.

For one magnificent, humiliating second, he looked completely victorious.

Then awareness returned.

Slowly.

Kayden looked down at the feather.

Then at his paws.

Then at Jiwoo.

Then at Asuka.

Jiwoo's mouth was open.

Asuka's expression was calm.

Too calm.

Kayden released the feather and stepped back with as much dignity as possible.

"That," he said, "was tactical."

Jiwoo blinked.

"Tactical?"

"Yes."

"You pounced."

"I intercepted a moving object."

"The cat toy."

"A moving object."

Jiwoo's eyes were sparkling.

Kayden's fur bristled.

"Do not look at me like that."

"I'm not."

"You are."

Jiwoo pressed his lips together.

His shoulders shook.

Kayden pointed one paw at him.

"You are injured. Do not laugh."

Jiwoo made a strangled sound.

"I'm not laughing."

"You are absolutely laughing."

Asuka lowered her gaze to her laptop.

Kayden turned to her.

"And you."

"I am working."

"You saw."

"Yes."

"Forget it."

"No."

Kayden stared.

Jiwoo's laughter escaped in a bright burst before he immediately grabbed his ribs and winced.

"Ow—sorry—ow—"

Asuka stood at once.

"Oppa."

"I'm okay," Jiwoo said, still laughing weakly. "I'm sorry. It was just—Mr. Kayden, you were so fast."

Kayden lifted his chin.

"Well, of course I was fast."

"And cute."

The room died.

Asuka closed her eyes.

Kayden's expression went blank.

Jiwoo realized too late what he had said.

"I mean—"

Kayden's voice dropped.

"Cute?"

Jiwoo leaned back into the couch cushions.

"In a powerful way?"

Asuka turned away slightly.

Kayden's tail puffed.

"There is no powerful way to be cute."

"I think there is," Jiwoo said, then immediately regretted it.

Kayden stalked toward the couch.

Jiwoo held up both hands.

"Please don't attack. Asuka said I have to rest."

Kayden stopped.

Slowly turned toward Asuka.

She looked back at him serenely.

"If you injure him further, I will be displeased."

Kayden stared.

Jiwoo whispered, "That means don't."

"I know what it means."

Kayden turned away, deeply offended by everyone in the room, including the feather toy.

The black cat pounced on the toy in his absence.

Kayden watched it.

His paw twitched.

Asuka saw.

Kayden noticed her seeing.

"Stop."

"I am not doing anything."

"You are seeing."

"I have eyes."

"Not normal ones."

"That is true."

Jiwoo looked between them.

"Asuka?"

She glanced at him.

Jiwoo smiled softly.

"You figured something out?"

Kayden's head snapped around.

"No, she did not."

Asuka tilted her head.

"I did."

Kayden bristled.

"Do not say it."

Jiwoo looked curious.

"What is it?"

Asuka folded her hands lightly in her lap.

"Kayden is not simply taking the form of a cat."

Kayden's fur rose.

Jiwoo blinked.

"What does that mean?"

Asuka's gaze moved to Kayden.

Her eyes were gentle.

Amused, yes.

But not mocking.

"He is biologically a cat right now."

Silence.

Kayden stared at her.

Jiwoo stared at Kayden.

The cats, unhelpfully, continued playing.

Kayden's voice came very low.

"Explain."

Asuka considered him.

"You are not wearing a cat shape over your body. Your body has fully transformed into a cat's body. Your nervous system, senses, muscle reactions, balance, digestion, instincts—all of it is functioning as a real cat's."

Jiwoo's eyes widened.

"So that's why…"

Kayden slowly turned.

"Do not finish that thought."

Jiwoo tried.

He really did.

But he looked at the empty food bowl from earlier.

Then the sunny floor patch.

Then the feather toy.

Then Kayden.

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

Jiwoo whispered, "That's why you like fish."

Kayden lunged.

Asuka's hand lifted slightly.

The distance between Kayden and Jiwoo politely lengthened.

Kayden's leap fell short by an impossible inch.

He landed on the couch cushion beside Jiwoo instead of on Jiwoo's face.

Jiwoo froze.

Kayden froze.

Asuka sipped her tea.

Kayden slowly turned toward her.

"You used your ability."

"To protect his ribs."

"I was not going to hit his ribs."

"You were going to hit his face."

"That is not his ribs."

"Still not ideal."

Jiwoo covered his mouth, eyes watering with laughter.

Kayden's paw trembled.

"You are both testing me."

Asuka's gaze softened with rare open amusement.

"You also like cat food."

Kayden went completely still.

Jiwoo gasped.

"Asuka."

She blinked innocently.

"It is biologically reasonable."

Kayden's voice was a whisper.

"Betrayal."

"It is not betrayal. It is anatomy."

"Worse."

Jiwoo lost the battle again and laughed, immediately curling around his ribs with a pained wheeze.

Asuka reached over and gently steadied him.

"Do not laugh too hard."

"I'm sorry," Jiwoo gasped. "I'm sorry. Mr. Kayden, I'm not laughing at you."

"You are."

"I'm laughing because it makes sense."

"That is laughing at me."

Jiwoo smiled helplessly.

"I still think you're very cool."

Kayden glared.

"And cute."

"Jiwoo," Asuka warned softly.

"Sorry."

Kayden sat beside Jiwoo on the couch, furious, orange, and very clearly fighting the urge to paw at the feather toy again.

The grey scarred cat lifted its head and blinked at him.

Kayden pointed at it.

"You say nothing."

The grey cat said nothing.

Because it was a cat.

Asuka's mouth curved.

Kayden caught it.

"Do not."

"I am not."

"You are."

"Yes."

Jiwoo leaned back against the cushions, still smiling despite his injuries.

The room was warm with late morning light. The cats played around them. Asuka's tea steamed softly on the table. Kayden sat stiffly on the couch, dignified only by sheer force of will.

His mind, however, had resumed working.

A complete transformation.

A real cat body.

That meant his instincts were not weakness.

They were side effects.

Temporary ones.

Manageable ones.

Obviously, someone of his caliber could overcome the biological impulses of a cat.

Easily.

He glanced at the feather toy.

It twitched as the black cat batted it.

Kayden's paw shifted.

He stopped himself.

Barely.

Asuka watched.

Kayden glared.

"Do not record this."

"I was not."

Jiwoo went very still.

Kayden slowly turned toward him.

Jiwoo clutched his phone under the blanket.

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

"Jiwoo."

Jiwoo smiled nervously.

"I didn't record it."

Kayden stared.

Jiwoo's smile wobbled.

"I took one picture."

Kayden's entire body went rigid.

Asuka looked down at her tea.

Kayden's voice became dangerously calm.

"Delete it."

Jiwoo looked heartbroken.

"But—"

"Delete. It."

Jiwoo looked at Asuka for help.

Asuka considered the situation.

Then said, "Send it to me first."

"Asuka!"

Kayden stood on the couch, tail puffed to full volume.

"You are supposed to be the sensible one!"

"I am."

"You are encouraging him!"

"I am preserving evidence."

"Of what?"

"Anatomy."

Jiwoo made a tiny sound and buried his face in the blanket.

Kayden stared between them.

The Great Kayden.

The feared destroyer.

The independent monster of the awakened world.

Defeated by one injured boy, one quietly amused little sister, and a feather toy.

He dropped back onto the couch cushion with a heavy, offended thump.

"I hate this house."

Jiwoo peeked over the blanket.

"No, you don't."

Kayden's ears flattened.

Asuka looked at him gently.

"You are comfortable here."

Kayden looked away at once.

"That is not relevant."

"It seems relevant."

"It is not."

The black cat dragged the feather toy closer.

It bumped against Kayden's paw.

Kayden stared at it.

Everyone watched.

He lifted his paw.

Slowly.

With complete dignity.

Then pressed the feather down.

Once.

The cats pounced.

Jiwoo smiled so softly it almost hurt.

Asuka's eyes warmed.

Kayden looked out the glass door again, pretending none of this was happening.

But he did not move away from the couch.

And when the toy twitched near his paw again, he pressed it down once more.
