Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

As I trekked through the empty streets, my breath was visible in the brisk winter air. The snowstorm was unrelenting. The brightly shining full moon gave the white blanket an unsettling radiance. Snow had always been a favorite of mine, but tonight felt different. The silvery light of the full moon seemed to call out to me, drawing me forward on an enigmatic trip.

I had the impression that I was strolling through a dream as I watched the snow dance and whirl in the moonlight.

I had the impression that I was the only person living as I moved through this snowy wonderland. The only sounds that could be heard were the occasional scream of the wind and the crunching of snow under my feet. I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm and serenity flood over me despite the cold. It seemed as though the snow washed away my sins and purified my soul. I had no idea where I was going, but I was forced to keep going because of the full moon's mesmerizing lure.

When I arrived at my house, my dad was seated in the living room as I could see from the window. When I opened the door, the comforting aroma of hot cocoa welcomed me inside.

As I entered the house, my father grinned and looked up from his book. "Welcome home, dear."

I couldn't help but smile in return, feeling safe and secure in my own house. On such a chilly and snowy night, I was grateful for the warmth and company, so I quickly took off my coat and boots and joined my dad by the fireplace.

My eyelids were getting weary as we talked while sitting in our chairs. I was ready for some sleep because it had been a hard day.

I got up from the couch, "Well, I think it's about time for me to head to bed," I said. I said, "Goodnight, Dad," and moved up to my room after giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I put on my pajamas and climbed into bed, feeling the smooth sheets on my skin and being surrounded by the comfortable hush of my house. I sighed deeply and let myself to fall asleep peacefully.

The temperature increased as the days went by, and the trees began to develop and bloom. The lovely colors of spring took the place of the gloomy winter. The air was filled with the lovely sounds of birds and the aroma of growing flowers. When the light shone brightly through my window one morning, I knew it was time to welcome the springtime. To let in the fresh air and the sound of kids playing outside, I opened my window. I made the decision to go for a walk in the park to enjoy the views and sounds of nature. My senses were awakened, and the fully bloomed flowers and lush green grass gave me a sense of rebirth and hope.

However, the length of the school days seemed to increase as the seasons changed. In my strategy class, I was sitting at my desk attempting to concentrate on a tedious lecture, but my thoughts kept straying. Going home was all I could think about as the day felt endless.

My teacher's voice brought me back to reality at that precise moment.

His voice was irritated, "Miss Lunny, can you answer the question?"

I could feel my face blushing with humiliation as I realized I had no idea what the question was as I looked up to saw every eye in the room fixated on me.

I attempted to play it off with a guilty look as I asked, "Oh, um, what was the question again?"

He said, plainly agitated, "Why is the battle between the Misty Pines and Winter Lake so important?"

I answered, attempting to gather my thoughts, "Oh, right." The Misty Pines pack challenged the Lycan royal family at Winter Lake for the first time in 150 years, and it was also the first time an enemy was defeated in battle using both human and wolf forms; prior to that, all battles were fought exclusively in wolf form. This revolutionized warfare from that point forward.

My teacher gave me a firm "Correct," response. Please be sure to pay attention going forward.

While still feeling ashamed, I nodded as my sister Harmony yelled across the room, "Good job, dumbo."

My teacher told Miss Lunny, "Other Miss Lunny, that's enough."

Harmony simply shook her shoulders and grinned perfectly while flipping her flawless blonde hair over her shoulder. Mr. Batch, I apologise; I'll leave my little sister alone.

I retorted, "You're only two and a half minutes older than me, Harmony," which caused the rest of the class to laugh.

A bell will ring.

I grabbed my belongings and virtually rushed out of the classroom as the bell rang to finish the school day because I was desperate to get away from Harmony.

But as I moved through the busy hallway, a recognizable voice halted me. "Where on earth are you going in such a hurry?"

My boyfriend Rain was coming my way when I turned around. He drew me in for a brief kiss on the cheek as he put an arm around my waist because his radiant grin and flawless teeth made it impossible to resist.

"Rain, thank God it's you. Harmony has been on the rampage today."

He responded, "She's not so bad," which caused me to roll my eyes.

She's not that great, and she doesn't even resemble me; my hair is silver, not blond like hers.

"My bad," he said with a smile. Your hair has changed, without a doubt.

I couldn't help but feel a tinge of envy as I saw the teacher fawn over Rain, while I was mostly ignored, as we moved down the hallway and a teacher yelled out to Rain, addressing him as "future Alpha." But as soon as we entered the open air, Rain quickly reassured me.

We're almost done, and we have a whole life ahead of us after turning 18 soon, so don't let that get you down, love.

I looked up at him and murmured, "I know," as I spun a hair strand around my finger.

Rain was an extremely beautiful and physically impressive man. He had a tall, athletic physique, and well-defined muscles that could be seen even through his attire. particularly when he wore his form-fitting tank tops. His piercing blue eyes and sharp features were usually emphasized by the way his black, wavy hair was always worn. He has a powerful, muscular appearance with sex appeal thanks to his sculpted cheekbones and chiseled jawline. He exudes charisma in general and conveys a genuine caring quality with his warm and engaging smile.

I hesitantly questioned, "Do you think it's weird that we haven't felt anything yet?" "Anything? A spark? A need? An urge?

Rain paused to consider his next move before shaking his head. We're still under 18, so maybe that's when we're supposed to experience that spark, so I don't think it's strange.

I responded with, "I suppose," feeling a little relieved. However, have you heard of Prince Louis? He is almost nineteen and hasn't yet found his soul partner.

"Almost nineteen? That's unusual, especially for a royal lycan," observed Rain.

"Yeah, I don't think a royal hasn't mated at eighteen in a few hundred years," I continued.

Rain unlocked the car door for me and said, "Maybe his mate is beyond the royal city."

A persistent thought persisted in the back of my mind while I sat in the car and gazed out the window. I couldn't place what was wrong, but I knew something wasn't right.

I looked back at Rain, who was adjusting the radio. I questioned, "Do you feel any different at all?"

He responded, "Different? How?"

I tried to describe the experience by saying, "I don't know. There's just something not right. Like something is missing."

Rain took my hand and gave it a comforting squeeze. We still have time to figure it all out because we are under 18 and because we have each other.

I grinned and moved forward to give him a kiss. Perhaps he was correct. We had plenty of time to plan everything out. I was content to have him by my side for the time being.

As we backed out of the parking lot, I turned back to the window and watched the other children walk toward cars and buses.

I kept getting the impression that something wasn't right while we were driving home. I made an effort to put it out of my mind and concentrate on the here and now, but the nagging feeling remained.

Harmony was waiting for us in the living room when we arrived at home. She smirked and said, "Hey, losers.

I questioned "How did you get home so fast?"

She grinned as Rich strolled out of the kitchen carrying a sandwich, "Rich brought his bike today."

"Yo."

Rich wasn't that tall, but he was taller than Harmony, and he emanated raw masculinity and an honed physique from hours spent in the weight room and on the football field. While his easy smile and quick wit make him difficult to refuse, his gloomy gray eyes and rough jawline give him an air of menace. He commands attention and arouses passion in virtually everyone around him with his bulging muscles.

He was absolutely boring and annoying in my opinion.

Hello, Rich," I said.

"El."

"Hey, Harm," Rain said, hugging her.

I asked with a touch of envy, "Ugh, do you have to be so affectionate with her?"

Harmony mocked, "Jealous much?"

I replied, "No, I'm not jealous; I just don't get why you have to be so nasty all the time.

Harmony gave a shrug. But seriously, Ellie, what's been going on today? You've been acting strangely all day, it's just how I am.

I paused because I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell her how I felt. But something about the worried expression on her face caused me to start talking. I don't know. I simply get the impression that something is wrong, that I'm missing something, or that I shouldn't be in this place.

Harmony's face started to relax. You're turning eighteen soon, and your wolf is probably becoming restless, so it's probably just pre-mating nerves. Don't worry, it'll pass.

I nodded as my mood improved a little. Perhaps you're correct; it's just been a strange day.

I'm probably just paranoid because it's two days until our birthday.

I was born on the same day as Rain and Harmony. He was supposed to mate with one of us, that much was certain. Since the passing of his father, our father, Kenrick, has served as the pack's beta, and it is anticipated that our older brother, Tristan, will take over as the new beta.

Everyone anticipated that one of his daughters would mate with Rain, the next alpha, and it only seems appropriate that it would be me.

"So, we're still on for Sunday?"

I turned to face Rain and said, "Huh?"

"Are we still conducting the party properly?"

Oh, yeah, of course. It's all your mom and my mom speak about, and they've been planning for months.

"We are all celebrating a big birthday today."

I flung open the door and climbed out, saying, "I suppose it is." "Discuss later"

"Yeah."

I gave a wave before entering the home. My mother yelled orders while servants and pack members bustled about.

She behaved less like the real Luna and more like a Luna.

Luna Celeste, Rain's mother, was a kind and loving person. Nothing like the stern mother who controlled our home with an iron fist.

"Ellie! You're back home! Where is your sister?"

I gave my mother a cheek kiss. "Hello, mom. She was behind me. I think she's talking to Rich."

My mum gave me a smirk before stomping off to another room. I don't care for him.

I murmured, "Nobody does," and went to my room.

The long weekend flew by, and before I knew it, it was time to prepare for the significant birthday celebration. The moon served as our goddess and source of strength, and we always held our parties in the wee hours of the morning. We expressed thanks to Artemis for her blessings in addition to celebrating our lives.

I was enjoying the icy blue outfit my mother had made for me as I stood in front of the mirror. It complemented my eyes and my silver hair wonderfully. My contours were wonderfully cradled by the cloth.

Similar to mine, Harmony's clothing was amber in color to go with her eyes.

Our mother was more enthusiastic than I had ever seen her when she said, "Hurry, girls! The guests are arriving. There's a big surprise for all three of you tonight!"

Harmony enquired, "What is she talking about?"

I sighed. I put on my complementary blue shoes and followed my sister down the stairs.

At the foot of the stairs, she exclaimed, "I love you," as we came to a stop.

"What?"

I know I pick on you a lot, but I still adore you.

I gave her a smile. "I love you, too."

The question "Are you ready?"

"I guess. Let's finish this up."

We entered the lavish ballroom where our pack's senior leaders, their families, and representatives from neighboring packs were gathering.

Harmony said in a low voice, "That's a lot of people."

How often do the twin daughters of the Beta and the future Alpha both turn eighteen on the same day?

I suppose never.

As the music began, Harmony took me onto the dance floor. The scene was enveloped in fog as the lights flashed. As our buddies and some of the other youngsters joined us, we laughed and danced.

The lights turned on, and then the music abruptly stopped.

I glanced at the clock and mused, "Is it time already?"

It was 9:00. However, why had the music stopped while everyone was present?

Alpha Anwar commanded as a commanding older man with grey hair and a commanding demeanor entered the room, followed by a younger version of him. "Attention everyone. Please welcome our benevolent rulers, King Richard and Prince Louis of the Winter Lake pack,"

Prince was rather tall. He was at least six feet taller than me. He was very magnificent to behold. His flawlessly waved sandy blonde hair frames his sculpted face and ocean blue eyes. Under his suit, his muscles appeared to be flawlessly toned, indicating the strength and power that lay beneath. He radiates a mysterious, seductive brooding intensity. People are drawn to him by his almost magnetic presence, and his good looks are only rivaled by his attitude of confidence and authority. His stare alone can send hearts racing because he personifies manly beauty.

He remained silent as he stood next to the king, his jaw gritted. As he scanned the space, his nose shot up as if he had caught a whiff of something. He gave me a longer-than-comfortable look, and I noticed his lips moving into a faint smile. He received bows and curtsies from everyone in the room, but he only looked at me. Gamma Arthur moved in between us to avert our eyes.

Harmony cried out, "Oh my goddess," with her mouth gagged. The most attractive man I have ever seen, he is.

He is attractive, I concurred.

He's great, Pearl, not appealing at all.

She dragged me over to the royal wolves' meeting with Alpha Anwar and Rain.

She grinned eagerly while clearing her throat.

Alpha Anwar apologized to the females, "Oh, my bad!" Let me meet King Richard, Prince Louis, and these are Harmony and Pearl Kenrick, Beta Kenrick's daughters.

The two men examined us and we bow to them.

"Happy birthday," wished King Richard. "Nice to meet you both," he said.

I experienced a fleeting, unexplainable feeling at that moment. I noticed the prince staring at me once more when I looked up at him. Observing, Rain moved in front of him and began speaking. Taking that as a sign to go, Harmony and I went back to the dance floor. I couldn't help but feel like the prince was watching me as we danced. It was an odd and disturbing feeling, but I wasn't sure what to make of it. Despite this, I had a good time at the celebration with my sister and our friends and was appreciative of our pack's love and support.
