Chapter 13 - [13] Selección

The golden hues of early morning sunlight streamed through Izumi's window, casting a warm glow on his room. The clock on his bedside table read 6:30 AM.

Summer break was in full swing, but for Izumi Miyamura, there was no break from his relentless pursuit of volleyball excellence. With only four days remaining until the summer tournament, every moment counted.

Izumi, wearing his practice gear, quietly descended the stairs, not wanting to wake his parents just yet. His mother, Iori, was already in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She greeted him with a knowing smile.

"Early start again, Izumi?" she asked, placing a plate of eggs and toast in front of him.

Izumi nodded as he buttered his toast. "Yeah, Mom— gotta go club early today as well! Tournament is coming up"

Iori studied her son for a moment. His determination and dedication were evident in his every move. "You're going to do great in the tournament, Izumi. I'm proud of you."

Izumi's father, Naozumi, entered the kitchen, rubbing his eyes. "What's all this talk about the tournament so early in the morning?"

Izumi grinned, feeling fortunate to have such supportive parents. "Just a few more days, Dad. I can't afford to slack off."

As Izumi finished his breakfast, his parents engaged him in light conversation about his club activities and the friends he was making there. Iori, always one to tease, couldn't resist a playful jab.

"There is a girls team in you club as well, didn't it~ Is there anyone special catching your eye at the club, Izumi?" she asked with a wink.

Izumi's face turned slightly red as he chuckled. "Mom, it's not like that. We're all focused on training."

Naozumi joined in, teasing his son. "You can tell us if there's someone you like, you know. We're here to support you in all aspects of life."

Izumi shook his head, trying to suppress his embarrassment. "It's really not like that, Dad."

After breakfast, Izumi grabbed his backpack, which contained his volleyball gear, and headed out the door. The early morning sun was already warming the air. As he pedaled his bicycle toward the club, he couldn't help but reflect on the past weeks.

His training had intensified significantly. Under the guidance of coaches Hizashi, David, and Micha, he had honed his physicality, improved his agility, and gained better control over his speed. The rigorous drills had pushed him to his limits, and he welcomed the challenge.

Arriving at the club, he greeted his fellow club members, who were also working hard to secure a spot on the tournament team.

Conversations buzzed around him, filled with excitement and determination. Izumi knew that each of them was striving to be the best they could be.

During his break, Izumi sat on the sidelines, watching a recorded volleyball match on his tablet. He analyzed the players' movements, strategies, and techniques, mentally absorbing every detail. The match served as a wellspring of inspiration, fueling his desire to improve further.

Riku Yagami, his newfound friend and training partner, approached him. "Miyamura, what are you watching?"

Izumi looked up, smiling. "Just studying some matches. There's always something new to learn."

Riku nodded. "You're so dedicated, man. I admire that about you."

Izumi appreciated the compliment. "We're all here to become better, Riku. Let's push each other to our limits."

The two friends exchanged a determined look, their camaraderie solidifying with each passing day.

The countdown to the summer tournament continued, and Izumi knew that each day of training brought him closer to his goal. With a deep breath, he refocused his mind on the practice ahead, ready to give his all once more.

The sun hung high in the sky as the volleyball club's morning practice session continued— with incorporating the personalized training to daily training~ he started joining the public training session again.

Coach Hizashi meticulously guided the team through various drills, each designed to sharpen their footwork and positioning on the court.

Amid the swift and coordinated movements of the players, Izumi's progress in agility stood out. He moved with an almost uncanny swiftness, darting across the court to cover ground and positioning himself perfectly for receives and digs.

During one particular play, the opponents attempted a powerful spike directed toward Izumi's corner of the court. In an instant, he lunged to his left, extending his arm to make a miraculous receive that sent the ball high into the air.

The crowd of onlookers gasped in astonishment at his agility and precise control.

Riku, watching from the sidelines, couldn't contain his excitement. "Miyamura, that was incredible! You're like a ninja out there!"

Izumi grinned, still catching his breath. "Thanks, Riku. Coach David's training really paid off."

As the drills continued, the club members marveled at Izumi's newfound abilities. It wasn't just his agility but also his speed control that left a lasting impression.

Whether it was a quick change of direction or a lightning-fast dash to save a ball from hitting the ground, Izumi's movements were nothing short of astonishing.

Coach Hizashi gathered the team for a water break, and there was a buzz of excitement in the air. The players, drenched in sweat, exchanged comments about Izumi's remarkable improvements.

"Did you see that dive? Izumi's like a superhero!"

"I never thought agility training could make such a difference."

"Is he even human?"

Riku seized the opportunity to approach Izumi. "Man, you've been killing it out there. Your agility has improved so much."

Izumi grinned, genuinely pleased with his progress. "Thanks, Riku. But it's not just me; we're all getting better together."

Riku nodded in agreement, then playfully added, "Still, if you keep this up, you'll be the ace of our team in no time."

Izumi chuckled, appreciating Riku's encouragement. "Let's both aim high, Riku. We'll make a great team."

After the grueling morning session, it was time for the afternoon training led by Coach Endou. The focus shifted to jumping and spiking drills, designed to boost their jump height and precision.

Izumi, alongside his teammates, engaged in a series of exercises to strengthen their legs and core muscles. They practiced their approach and timing for spiking. Coach Endou watched closely, offering feedback and encouragement.

During one of the drills, Coach Endou gathered the players and addressed the entire group. "Remember, the key to a successful spike is not just power but precision. Miyamura–Kun here has shown remarkable improvement in both."

Izumi blushed at the praise but remained focused on the task at hand. With each jump and spike, he could feel the enhanced control over his movements, thanks to his dedicated training.

As the sun cast long shadows in the gym, the team's determination remained unwavering. They pushed themselves through the physically demanding drills, driven by the desire to represent their club in the upcoming tournament.

Finally, when the day's training was coming to a close, Coach Hizashi called for a team battle—a 6v6 match within the club. It was a crucial opportunity for players to showcase their skills and compete for a spot on the tournament roster.

The gym filled with anticipation as teammates and spectators eagerly watched the match unfold. Izumi and Riku, fueled by their growing friendship and shared determination, found themselves on the same team.

The rally was intense from the very beginning. Izumi's increased agility allowed him to react swiftly to the opponents' attacks. He dug, received, and set the ball with precision, contributing to the team's defensive stability.

Riku, on the other hand, delivered powerful spikes, utilizing the accurate sets provided by Izumi. Their chemistry on the court was evident as they communicated seamlessly. With each rally, their partnership grew stronger.

During one thrilling play, Izumi's lightning-quick reflexes saved a ball that seemed impossible to reach. The crowd erupted in applause, recognizing the significance of his enhanced agility.

Their team battled fiercely, trading points with their opponents. Izumi's progress was apparent as he demonstrated more control over his speed. He used his newfound abilities to outmaneuver the opposition and deliver precise sets and spikes that leave the blockers in dust.

During a timeout, Coach Hizashi approached Izumi and Riku, offering some advice. "You two make a great pair. Keep up the communication, and trust each other's movements. You're the future of this team."

Izumi and Riku exchanged determined nods. They knew that their chemistry on the court was a work in progress, but they were eager to make it stronger.

The 6v6 battle continued, and as the match neared its end, Izumi's team secured victory. Cheers and applause erupted from their teammates, celebrating their hard-fought win.

Coach Endou approached Izumi, acknowledging his exceptional performance. "Izumi, you've shown tremendous growth during these past weeks. I believe you deserve a spot on the tournament team."

Izumi's heart swelled with pride and gratitude. The countless hours of training and unwavering determination might have paid off. With only a few days left until the summer tournament, he was one step closer to realizing his dream.

The club members, fueled by the intensity of the 6v6 match, gathered around Coach Endou, eager to hear the final selections for the upcoming summer tournament. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation and excitement.

Coach Endou stood before the team, his gaze moving from one player to another. "I want to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication during this training period. It's been a challenging journey, and each one of you has shown immense improvement."

He paused, building the suspense, before announcing, "After careful consideration, I've made the selections for our tournament team."

Izumi's heart pounded as he waited for the verdict. He had come a long way in a short time, but the competition within the club was fierce.

Coach Endou began naming the selected players, starting with the setters and then moving through the positions. "Our setters for the tournament will be Kiyoshi, who has consistently shown excellent technique, and Izumi, who has impressed us with his control, speed, and all-around versatility— he will be playing other positions in the matches as well"

Izumi's eyes widened. He had not only secured a spot as a setter but was also recognized for his all-round abilities. It was a dream come true, and he couldn't help but smile.

The coach continued with the rest of the positions, including the outside hitters, middle blockers, and liberos. Riku's name was called as one of the outside hitters. His hard work had paid off as well.

As the coach completed the announcement, the selected players exchanged congratulatory nods and smiles.

Those who didn't make the cut showed resilience and support for their teammates, promising to continue working hard for the future.

Izumi felt a mix of emotions—joy for his own achievement, gratitude for his coaches and teammates, and a deep respect for the sport that had brought them all together.

After the selection, the team decided to celebrate with a meal at their favorite local restaurant. The mood was jubilant as they sat around a long table, sharing stories and laughter.

Riku, sitting beside Izumi, couldn't contain his excitement. "Miyamura, can you believe it? We made it to the tournament team!"

Izumi grinned, a sense of camaraderie filling his heart. "Yeah, it's incredible. We'll give our best, Riku, and make our club proud."

Their coach, Coach Micha, raised his glass for a toast. "To our tournament-bound team! I've seen incredible growth in each one of you, and I have no doubt that you'll shine on the court. Enjoy this moment, and let's continue working hard."

As glasses clinked and cheers filled the air, Izumi couldn't help but feel a deep sense of accomplishment. The journey was far from over, but he was ready to face the challenges ahead.

With only a few days remaining until the summer tournament, Izumi, Riku, and their fellow teammates knew that their dedication and teamwork would be put to the test. They were eager to step onto the court and give it their all, fueled by the passion for volleyball and the bonds they had formed.

The chapter concluded with Izumi's gaze fixed on the future, his determination stronger than ever. As an all-rounder, he was ready to contribute in any way necessary to lead his team to victory.
