Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Remarkable duo III

As the ice creatures rushed toward them by the thousands, emerging from the depths of the forest and howling through the storm, Nolan briefly closed his eyes. The wind fell silent around him, as if suspended by some invisible force. In an instant, a layer of shadow spread from his feet, rising like a veil of darkness to cover Grace and himself.

From this swirling darkness, chains of shadow erupted, like black serpents with a will of their own. They darted with frightening speed, striking the creatures one by one. And with each touch, the ice monsters screamed before freezing, their whitish bodies blackening with corruption.

Their natures were altered, their frozen essence replaced by a deeper, darker power. They became shadow beasts, controlled entirely by Nolan's will, their eyes now a luminescent purple, their icy aura replaced by a silent breath of death.

This ability was called [Deflection].

Not a simple defense, but a complex skill, manipulating enemy energy to twist, corrupt, and assimilate it. With it, Nolan was not just a warrior. He was a conqueror of essence, a devourer of power.

The chains continued their work, capturing deer, wolves, foxes, and ice birds, turning them against their former allies. The enemy army suddenly found itself confronted by its own forces, changed, enhanced, and treacherous.

Grace, enveloped in the protective shadow, laughed softly as she watched the creatures obey Nolan.

—Grace: "Impressive. Even beasts understand that it is better to serve you than to fight you." »

Nolan slowly opened his eyes, his voice calm but sharp:

— Nolan: "With some modifications, that is."

And at the top of the tree, the elven summoner, witnessing the scene, felt a shiver colder than snow run down his spine

Grace turned her gaze to Nolan, a mocking smile on her face:

— Grace: "You can't help but flex, can you? And I'm the arrogant one here..."

Nolan, still calm, arms crossed, replied without losing his neutral tone:

— Nolan: "I never said I was 100% humble."

A wider sneer split Grace's face, and she shrugged before stretching her neck from one side to the other, making her bones crack with a sharp sound.

— Grace: "Well... Since it's time to flex too..."

He never finished his sentence. He had already disappeared.

A moment later, an icy blast broke through the air at the top of a tree, where the elven summoner was hiding. His eyes widened. A cold sweat trickled down his temple. His hands trembled, his breath caught.

Grace stood behind him. Silent. Implacable.

The elf tried to speak, to move, to cast an incantation—but his body refused to obey.

Then came the blow. A lightning-fast fist, of raw violence, slammed into his back.

The impact shattered the branch. The summoner's body was thrown violently toward the ground like a shooting star, slicing through the air before crashing into a cloud of snow and ice, raising a white spray in front of Nolan.

Grace landed softly beside him, hands in his pockets.

Nolan, hands in his pockets, glanced at Grace with an amused sigh.

"Nolan: "You took the game too seriously."

Grace, running a hand through her white hair and elegantly smoothing it back into place, replied casually, "Grace: "I'm often told I'm very theatrical."

They exchanged a small smile before continuing on their way. The forest suddenly seemed calm, silent, almost peaceful. No elves, no ice creatures, no danger. The cold wind had died down, and only the sound of their footsteps on the snow accompanied their walk.

But this respite was short-lived.

The ground began to vibrate, a dull tremor running through the earth beneath their feet. Creaking echoed all around them. The trees bent, the trunks cracked, and slowly... the entire forest sank, swallowed by an invisible chasm, as if absorbed into another world.

Then, everything changed.

A new world was revealed. An infinite plane, with no visible end. The ground was pure white, almost blinding. No shadows. No relief. Just this flat, unreal immensity. The sky was still snowy, but frozen in the air, as if time itself had decided to stand still.

And in the sky...

A star.

Or rather... an anomaly.

A misshapen, unreal geometric shape floated in the air. It slowly changed shape, as if searching for a coherence it could never find. Impossible angles, curves that followed no logic. It levitated above them, imposing, almost alive.

As the strange star continued its slow, silent metamorphosis, a translucent screen suddenly appeared before Nolan and Grace, suspended in the air like a divine interface:

> [MAIN QUEST: FINAL CHAPTER]

You have reached the final quest.

Prepare yourself.

—Transfer in progress…—

The screen dissipated in a shower of blue sparks.

A deep, dull noise immediately echoed across the white expanse, like a heartbeat from the sky itself. The ground beneath their feet began to shudder, and a gigantic castle began to slowly emerge from the white mist.

It was magnificent.

An ice castle, as tall as a mountain, now stood before them. Its structure was both imposing and elegant, made of transparent ice with a silver sheen. Soaring towers, twisted like arrows, pointed skyward as if they wanted to pierce the misshapen star itself. Each wall seemed chiseled like a jewel. Stained-glass windows frozen in ice depicted ancient scenes of war, forgotten kings, and mages with immeasurable powers.

Suspension bridges made of luminous crystals connected the castle's various wings. Giant statues of dragons, wolves, and elves guarded the entrances, sculpted with such realism that they looked as if they were breathing.

Grace hissed through her teeth, dazzled by the scene.

—Grace: "Wow... Did you see that? This thing is fit for a god."

Nolan, impassive, was already analyzing the place, his eyes narrowed.

—Nolan: "No. It's more than a castle. It's a... throne." This place is alive. It breathes magic... and the end."

A gust of icy air rose then, caressing their faces.

And in the distance, the immense castle doors slowly opened with a dull creak. A dark corridor loomed inside, dotted with blue light and frost suspended in the air.

Something awaited them.

And it wasn't just an end.

It was a judgment.

An even heavier chill than before settled in the moment the two elves left the castle. Their figures were slender and slender, with a divine presence. Their long robes flowed as if they were immersed in another reality. One dressed in immaculate white, the other in shimmering midnight blue, their gazes pierced the air like silent blades.

They hadn't yet spoken, but their presence was enough to freeze the atmosphere.

Grace, ever the theatrical type, swung his sword around him with a sweeping gesture using its chain, creating a light breeze.

—Grace: "Crowned elves? Interesting. Kings, priests... or judges?"

He laughed softly, provocatively. "I hope they dance well; I'm in the mood to waltz."

The white-robed elf stepped forward slightly, his feet hovering inches above the frozen ground. His voice, soft but imbued with a strange authority, echoed through the frozen air:

Ervalur: "Dungeon hunters... My name is Ervalur. Like my brother here, I rule over this sanctuary. We offer you a better life, provided you agree to become our loyal subjects."

Grace took a step forward, her gaze fixed directly on the elven king's.

Grace: "With all due respect, King Ervalur... your proposition does not interest us in the least."

The elf in blue, still floating in the air, leaned forward slightly, her gaze piercing, almost amused.

Glynmaris: "I am Glynmaris." The power we share has never been challenged… Many hunters have tried to breach our defenses. Few have survived. Some have bent the knee, accepting our blessing and a peaceful life. Are you absolutely sure of your choice?"

Nolan, arms crossed, let out a soft sigh before replying sharply, bluntly:

— Nolan: "Of course. We didn't come here to be baptized… but to finish this damn dungeon."

Ervalur, his gaze hard and icy, declared sharply:

Ervalur: "So be it."

No sooner had the words left his lips than he and his brother descended upon Nolan and Grace with supernatural speed, their silhouettes almost merging with the snowflakes carried by the wind.

Nolan, focused, let his magical senses guide his movements. Ervalur attempted several rapid strikes, each one deadly precise. But Nolan dodged each blow with ease, his silhouette almost melting into the air. Taking advantage of an opening, he launched a powerful mana-charged punch into the elf's stomach. The impact was so great that Ervalur was thrown several dozen meters away, crashing violently to the ground, raising a shower of snow and ice.

Meanwhile, Grace faced Glynmaris in the air. The latter, still levitating, summoned a series of blue portals that unfolded all around Grace, forming a menacing circle. From these portals emerged dozens of ice blades, long, curved, and jagged—all different, all deadly.

The blades shot toward Grace with blinding speed, whistling through the air like icy howls.

Grace, without blinking, whispered:

— Grace: "Classic mage tactic..."

He swung his sword in a circular arc, activating a defensive skill. Golden chains shot out around him, whirling at breakneck speed, breaking and repelling the blades one by one in a deluge of icy shards.

The sky shuddered, the snow melting under the intensity of their clash.

Nolan charged toward Ervalur, his footsteps sinking into the snow, a dark, determined glint in his eyes. Holding back his blows was out of the question.

But Ervalur, already on his feet, raised his hand and concentrated a series of icy orbs between his fingers. He immediately launched them, balls of ice energy with unpredictable trajectories, heading straight for Nolan.

— Ervalur: "You won't go any further, hunter."

With a fluid gesture, Nolan activated his [Protection] skill. A shadow half-shield materialized in an arc in front of him, absorbing the impacts one by one, the projectiles literally melting into the black veil. At the same time, he charged a wave of shadow energy in his palm and projected it toward Ervalur.

The wave shot out with the force of a black tide, hitting the ground with a dull explosion. A gaping crater forms, the ice shattering into sharp fragments, snow blowing for meters around.

But... nothing.

Nolan, alert, scans the area. His gaze narrows.

— Nolan (thought): He's gone? Impossible...

A shiver runs down his spine. Purely by instinct, he takes a sideways step, twisting his torso. A sharp blade of ice slices through the air a hair's breadth from his face, whistling through the void.

In the air, a few meters behind him, Ervalur levitates, his expression more serious, an ice bow now in his hands.

— Ervalur: "You're quick. Interesting. Let's see how long you can last."

As Nolan dodges another volley of Ervalur's ice blades, something begins to trouble him. The elf in white, despite the intensity and frequency of his attacks, shows no signs of slowing down. Worse still, each new attack seems more powerful than the last.

A feeling dawns.

Nolan immediately activates his [Analysis] skill. A veil of light briefly crosses his eyes, and a semi-transparent screen appears before him, filled with coded information, ancient symbols, and energy data.

A message stands out clearly in the center of the screen:

> [Anomaly Source Detected]

The Star of Despair continuously powers King Ervalur. His power increases at regular intervals. No energy cost is required.

Nolan grits his teeth.

— Nolan (whispering): "Tch... That's why he's not weakening." That misshapen star up there... it sucks the energy from this world and gives it to him like a bottomless well."

He briefly looks up at the sky. The star, with its distorted geometric shapes, levitating in the snowy sky pulses gently, almost imperceptibly... but now that he knows, Nolan feels each pulse like a heartbeat, synchronized with Ervalur's rising power.

— Nolan: "We have to cut off its source... or we'll never finish."

In the snowy sky, as Glynmaris's icy portals unleash myriad magical blades, Grace cuts through the air with relentless assurance. Her blade dances, each blow shattering and splintering the frozen spells like glass. No spell reaches her, no attempt succeeds in slowing her progress.

— Grace (smiling): "Did you take me for an amateur, Glynmaris?"

Before the elf can react, Grace disappears in a flash of speed.

He instantly reappears behind Glynmaris, inches away. His fist, surrounded by energy and vibrating chains, crashes with devastating force against the elf's back. Glynmaris is violently thrown, passing through several structures of the ice castle before crashing against the immense central wall in an explosion of sparkling crystals.

Grace, still in the air, extends her right arm.

The black chain wrapped around his forearm suddenly lengthens, and his sword, attached to the other end, shoots out like lightning. It pierces the castle walls with a heart-rending hiss, then unleashes a shockwave upon impact.

A colossal explosion shakes the entire estate.

The castle, the icy jewel of the keep, collapses entirely in a storm of ice and energy flames. The walls crumble, the towers shatter and fall, and the icy ash gently falls back onto the white earth.

— Grace, descending slowly to the ground, looking calm:

"There. Castle destroyed. Now that's my kind of raid."

In the still-smoldering tumult, Glynmaris, bloodied, having lost several limbs, tries to get up from the wreckage.

While the castle lies in ruins and Clynmaris appears defeated, her body begins to regenerate at a supernatural speed. The missing pieces grow back, the blood evaporates, and her eyes reopen.

Grace, frowning, takes a step back.

—Grace: "How is that possible?... No... There must be a source."

That's when Nolan, observing the heavens, understands.

—Nolan: "Grace, look up there! The star... It gives them power, it nourishes them! Strength, regeneration, everything comes from there!"

Without wasting any time, Nolan focuses his shadow energy and projects an immense black wave toward the star. Grace raises her hand in turn, unleashing an incandescent solar attack, a burning golden wave.

The two energies intertwine in the sky, merge, and strike the star with a titanic blow.

The star explodes, a howl echoes throughout the dungeon. The atmosphere lightens, and the kings fall to their knees, helpless.

Nolan clenches his fist. A confident smile plays on his lips.

— Nolan: "Now that's what I call a profitable victory."

Nolan advances slowly, his steps heavy but sure, towards the two elven kings lying on the ground. Their gazes are dull, their bodies broken, deprived of the celestial energy that nourished them.

He stops right in front of them and raises his hand.

— Nolan: "You have ruled this place for too long. Your souls now belong to me."

His hand is enveloped in a black mist, swirling and dense. A pulse of power rises. With a precise movement, he slowly brings it down towards the two kings.

A magical circle of shadow forms on the ground, and the bodies of Ervalur and Glynmaris are engulfed by a dark light, sucked in and sealed away in an unknown dimension. No screams. Just silence, and a feeling of absolute emptiness.

A line immediately appears:

> The Ice Kings have been bound to your will. You can summon them later as fighting spirits.

No sooner is this action completed than the air rips around the two men.

A massive teleportation circle appears beneath their feet, and before they have time to react, they are sucked upward into a swirling spiral of light.

A few seconds later…

Nolan and Grace reappear, standing on a large, white stone plateau bathed in sunlight.

The real world.

They can feel the cool breeze blowing through the trees. Before them, on the horizon, the familiar silhouette of the city looms.
