Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: A Glimpse of Magic

Jon hurried along the rocky ravine, his lungs burning. He needed to put distance between himself and the medieval men pursuing him. But he also had to find cover soon to examine the maple leaf and strategize his next steps.

Coming around a bend, Jon spotted a narrow crevice cutting into the ravine wall. Squeezing inside, he found himself in a small cave-like opening. It was a tight fit, but it would have to do for now.

As Jon caught his breath in the dim cave, he carefully took out the maple leaf, cradling it in his palms. This solitary leaf represented the last hope for nature where he came from. Somehow, he had to ensure it would grow into a mighty tree that could spawn an entire new forest. A lush woods that would cleanse the toxic atmosphere of the future and change the course of humanity's destruction.

But how could he achieve that here? And when had he landed in exactly? Jon didn't recognize anything about the terrain or language. He could be thousands of years too early or too late to plant this seed that would make an impact.

Sighing in frustration, Jon placed the delicate leaf on a flat rock and slumped down against the cave wall. He closed his eyes, his mind swirling with doubts.

Suddenly, the cave filled with a faint green glow. Jon's eyes fluttered open and he watched in astonishment as the maple leaf began to glimmer, bathing the rocky walls in a warm, verdant luminescence.

Was it some kind of radiation from his time machine? No - as Jon looked closer, he saw the source of the glow were intricate symbols etched along the veins of the leaf. They almost seemed to shift and change as the leaf brightened, like living characters.

Jon's shock only deepened as more markings on the cave walls started to glimmer and pulsate in sync with the glowing leaf. They depicted creatures and landscapes Jon had never seen. Was this some ancient magic at work? Had he landed in a time of myth and sorcery rather than recorded history?

Footsteps outside the crevice snapped Jon back to the present danger. He quickly stashed the shining leaf in a pouch as two of the medieval men entered the tight space.

"No more running, sorcerer," one growled, raising a loaded crossbow. "You're coming with us, by force if needed."

Jon tensed, ready to fight. There were clearly mysteries yet to unravel about the maple leaf, and he could not fail his mission yet. This glimpse of magic gave him hope he had landed in an age where the impossible could still happen.

"I don't want trouble," Jon said calmly. "But I cannot go with you either."

The man smiled coldly. "Then trouble it is."

The two men rushed forward in the cramped cave. Jon narrowly ducked a crossbow bolt before kicking the weapon from the man's grip. He landed a solid punch, sending the first attacker slumping down.

The second grabbed Jon in a chokehold. Jon rammed him backwards into the cave wall, causing a shower of stone. The man's grip loosened enough for Jon to twist free.

"Sorcerer demon!" the man spat, drawing a dagger...
