{Jyoti's Rings and Staff, Thane, Mumbai}
{12th July 1992}
{Rigel's POV}
The moment I pushed open the wooden door of Jyoti's Staff & Rings, my mana senses were instantly overwhelmed by the amount of residual mana coming out of the shop. I had been a bit inexperienced when I brought my own wand from Ollivanders, so the jumbled amount of mana didn't even register to me back then, but here it felt almost breathtaking.
I focused on my surroundings to get my bearings, polished marble tiles stretched under my feet. The cream-colored marble had hints of green as it reflected the immense crystal chandelier suspended overhead, its golden frame artfully woven with living vines, that stretched across and made up the roof of the shop. I glanced down curiously and noticed that the hint of green that I had mistaken for the color of the marble was actually the roof of the shop.
'Okay...now that's one way to make an impression.' I almost whistled as I took the scene in, and so did the rest of our party.
Fred and George, usually loud and clamorous, fell quiet, taking in the beauty with uncharacteristic reverence and, from what their emotions were telling me, mischief. Ron's mouth was slightly agape, while Harry, similar to me, gazed around in wonder. Ginny's eyes sparkled with curiosity, and Parvati simply smiled knowingly, obviously having anticipated our reactions.
"It's stunning," Sirius murmured softly, nodding appreciatively at the elegant design of the shop's interior. "I've never seen a magical shop quite like this."
"That's Jyoti for you," Parvati said with a hint of pride, stepping up beside me. "She believes a magical shop should feel…well, magical."
As I stepped deeper inside, my attention was immediately drawn toward rows of bookshelves made from polished oak. Ancient feeling volumes, from their mana, sat perfectly organized, their spines embossed with glittering golden and silver letters that caught my eye as I read their titles with temptation:
"Runic Sanskrit: Unlocking the Language of Magic"
"Eastern Enchantments: A Comprehensive Guide"
"Jewels of the Craft: Gemstones in Spellcasting"
"Focus Fundamentals: A Beginner's Guide to Mana Channels."
I ran my fingers across the covers, savoring the gentle hum of mana, each unique, radiating from them.
Just then, the soft jingling of bells echoed through the shop as a brown-skinned woman appeared from a curtained doorway. Her midnight-blue saree shimmered under the chandelier light as she gracefully walked over. She moved with elegance as she approached us with a welcoming smile.
"Welcome," she greeted warmly, her voice rich and melodic, without the thick accent most locals had. "I'm Jyoti. How may I assist you today?"
While I was still engrossed in the collection of magical literature, Ginny eagerly stepped forward. "Hello! We heard about your rings, the focus rings. Could we buy some for us?"
Jyoti's smile widened with genuine enthusiasm. "Of course! Focus rings are indeed one of the newest and proudest innovations from the Indian magical community. They were invented locally, only recently, by a local enchanter named Master Anand Patel. He succeeded in applying ancient Sanskrit runic inscriptions to smaller gemstones... primarily diamonds, as they can handle magic's intense energies best, and their very nature allows multiple intricate runes to be etched on them."
I finally turned away from the books and stepped closer to hear her explanation. "So these rings can actually replace staffs entirely?" I asked, intrigued. If they can cast most spells, having one as backup for my non-wand hand would be a good choice.
Jyoti nodded thoughtfully. "In theory, yes, they could. Though they're most suitable for more delicate and precise spells that don't require much mana. The diamond serves as a sharp channel for magical energy, allowing for precise control, but it can not channel enough mana for large-scale spells. Also, this is a relatively new method, discovered not long ago. In practice, this requires adapting the most common spells to a slightly different casting method, suitable for the ring."
Harry stepped forward and asked. He looked interested as well. "How exactly do these runes work?"
Jyoti's eyes lit up, delighted by our genuine interest. "The Sanskrit runes create structured magical pathways inside the gemstone. Unlike wood and wand cores, gems require precise runic configuration, layered on top of one another to conduct magic properly. Imagine it like… tiny, invisible runic circuits etched into the very thin layers of the diamond itself. Because of their small size, it is a rather challenging task."
Fred and George exchanged excited glances. "Casting magic discreetly just by waving our hands," Fred whispered dramatically.
"Hogwarts is doomed," Ron exclaimed, noticing the twins' faces.
George chuckled, nudging his younger brother. "—think of the mischief we could get into!"
Ignoring the twins' eager whispering, Sirius asked. "Are these rings difficult to master?"
Jyoti considered this carefully. "There's definitely a learning curve. Spells cast through rings demand a much clearer mental intent due to the precision required. However, once learned, they grant exceptional subtlety and control. Though I guess the spells in themselves would be different from wanded magic, so it would be a little extra hard for you guys."
Ron rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "And can anyone use them?"
"They work best when personalized," Jyoti explained patiently. "When matched to a wizard or witch's magical signature and affinities, the rings become incredibly intuitive to specific types of spells and thus are the best way to make it more efficient. Customizing a focus ring involves measuring your magical resonance and carefully selecting compatible runes and other materials."
Ginny glanced at me, excitement lighting her eyes. "Now that sounds like fun, doesn't it, Rigel?"
I smiled warmly. "I don't mind spending an afternoon under a magnifying glass."
Turning back toward Jyoti, I asked, "Do you have an introductory book on various magical foci? Rings, orbs, staves, and wands, perhaps?"
Jyoti smiled, "Certainly. Come, let me show you."
She guided me to another counter, where a shelf of tomes described what I was asking about.
"Beyond Wands: Exploring Alternative Magical Foci"
"Orb Mastery: Magic Through Crystal Spheres"
"Staff Enchantments: Ancient Magic Renewed"
Eagerly, I picked up the book titled "'Beyond Wands"', and began flipping through it to see what it was about. While I couldn't read the language inside, the words on the cover were likely translated by a transcribing charm. I could see detailed diagrams and beautifully illustrated sections on various magical channels, exactly where my mana sense told me they were.
"You know, Rigel," Fred whispered conspiratorially, "imagine using one of these rings to cast hexes without anyone even noticing."
George grinned wickedly. "No one would be able to blame us ever again."
I rolled my eyes playfully, elbowing them lightly. "Let's at least try to learn the basic charms before diving into modifying prank spells, shall we?"
While Harry, Ron, Ginny, and Sirius excitedly began discussing ring customizations with Jyoti. Ginny turned briefly, catching my eye with a gentle smile. Parvati stepped gracefully beside me and asked. "You boys done plotting mischief?" she teased the twins playfully.
"Never," Fred replied cheerfully. "But we'll take a break for now."
"Probably," George amended with a grin.
Jyoti chuckled warmly. "Well, if you're all ready, we can begin with getting your readings. I'll just need to test your magical resonances with some runes."
Anticipation rippled through the group. Even Ron, usually cautious, seemed eager.
'That's the enthusiasm I was talking about. Now that it's something different, everyone is ready to try it. Why couldn't they be this exited about learning magic with a wand, isn't that miraculous in itself...' I shook my head and watched as everyone got ready to have their readings taken, one by one.
As Jyoti moved toward a set of instruments behind her counter, I glanced around once more at the magical treasures surrounding us. This was exactly what I'd hoped to discover with this trip. New avenues of magic, unexpected enchantments, and a deeper understanding of the wizarding world beyond just Britain and what was shown in the movies.
Ginny gently brushed my shoulder, pulling me back to the present. "Excited?" she asked softly.
I nodded, my heart pounding lightly in anticipation. "Very."
Her smile widened, shy yet pleased. "Me too."
Around us, laughter and conversation filled the shop again. Ron argued playfully with Fred about who would master their ring first, and Parvati chatted animatedly with Jyoti about their families.
While everyone got busy, I finally moved my attention to the book that was placed at the back of the very last bookshelf. Its magic stood out to me. While most of these books had been touched by various wizards and witches and hence had soaked up some of the ambient mana that they radiated, this one was different.
'It has mana of its own, a darker mana, something quite familiar...'

AN: Well, sorry for the abrupt vanishing act. I didn't have the time to proofread and rewrite chapters to post. As an apology, we'll go for a triple release today.
