2002 was not, by any honest measure, a good year to be launching anything.
The country was still raw from the fall before, the economy had spent the better part of two years unwinding the dot-com excess in slow, ugly increments, and by June the newspapers had a fresh villain: WorldCom, caught overstating its earnings by billions of dollars in what was, at the time, the largest accounting fraud in American corporate history — coming barely six months after Enron had shown everyone exactly how far a company could hollow itself out from the inside before anyone with a badge noticed. Congress passed Sarbanes-Oxley that July in direct response, new teeth for auditors, new personal liability for CEOs who signed off on numbers they hadn't actually checked. I made sure Infinite's books were audited by two separate firms who didn't know about each other before either scandal broke, not because I expected trouble, but because I'd learned, the hard way and the easy way both, that the appearance of clean hands only survives contact with reality if the hands are actually clean.
Against that backdrop, Apple decided to bet the year on a phone.
The device itself was the product of four years of quiet, compounding work — Skye's design contributions folded invisibly into engineering meetings I never physically attended, my own fingerprints limited to marketing strategy and the parts of the roadmap I could defend in a room without explaining where the underlying capacitive touch research had actually come from. Every phone on the market that year assumed you needed either a stylus or a keyboard to get anything done — Palm's whole ecosystem ran on the stylus assumption, BlackBerry had built an empire on thumbs and physical keys, and the conventional wisdom in the room, repeated by engineers who should have known better, was that human fingers were simply too imprecise for anything smaller than a button.
They were wrong, and I'd known they were wrong since before I could tie my own shoes, because the entire premise rested on a solvable materials and signal-processing problem, not a law of physics. Getting from this is impossible to this ships in eighteen months took the kind of resource commitment only a company with nothing left to lose would actually greenlight, and Apple in 2002, four years removed from circling the drain, was exactly that company.
We announced it in January, launched it in the spring: four gigabytes for four hundred ninety-nine dollars, eight for five ninety-nine, with a limited "Special Edition" run at five forty-nine that shipped, at my insistence, with a preloaded skin for both of Infinite's flagship games and a certificate of authenticity nobody needed but everybody wanted anyway. It sold out its first production run in hours. It sold out its second inside a week.
The press conference afterward went less smoothly than the sales numbers, which was, in its way, the more honest half of the story.
"Sam." A reporter from one of the trade papers, mid-forties, the specific weathered skepticism of someone who'd covered a decade of hardware launches and had learned not to be impressed by a keynote's applause line. "You're eleven years old. You've told this room the phone works because 'fingers are precise enough.' I've got engineers at three competitors telling me on background that capacitive touch at this scale isn't commercially viable for another five years, minimum. So either they're wrong, or you are, and I'd like to know which before I write my column."
"They're not wrong about the state of the art in January," I said. "They're wrong about where the state of the art stops. Resistive touch — the stylus systems everyone's used to — reads pressure. That's why you need a stylus; a fingertip doesn't apply pressure precisely enough across a small enough area. Capacitive reads the electrical property of skin itself, not pressure at all, which means the precision problem isn't a hardware limit, it's a signal-processing and manufacturing-tolerance problem. Solvable problems get solved faster when a company throws real money at them instead of waiting for the market to prove it's worth the money first. Apple threw the money first. That's the whole difference, and it's not magic, it's just capital allocated with conviction instead of caution."
"That's a tidy answer for something nobody else has shipped."
"It's a tidy answer because I've had four years to practice it," I said, and let the room laugh, because it was true and because letting them laugh bought me a half-second to decide how much further to go. "Look — I'm not going to pretend the eleven-year-old part isn't strange. It's strange to me too, some mornings. But strange isn't the same as wrong. You can fact-check the phone. It's sitting right there. It works or it doesn't, and it does, and no amount of my age is going to change what's already true about the device in your hand."
He didn't love the answer. He wrote a fair column anyway, which was really all I'd ever asked of any of them — not admiration, just an honest look at the thing itself, separate from the noise of who'd built it.
Behind all of it, quieter than any headline, Skye kept doing the work that actually mattered on the seventeen-year clock nobody in that press room knew existed. Two years now into Operation Cipher, she'd cracked deeper into NBE-1's — Megatron's — dormant systems than either of us had expected to manage this early, peeling back firewalls that weren't firewalls so much as scar tissue, old defensive routines built by a mind that had expected, correctly, to be hunted one day. Every layer she got through told us a little more about what was sleeping in the ice, and a little less about how much time we actually had left before it woke up on its own schedule instead of ours.
The phone was real. The money was real. But it was never, not for one press conference or one product launch, the point.
