I think the movie will be great

A fan asked Daniel Adler about his upcoming Star Wars film, and the answer turned into him explaining how he introduced his little sister to Star Wars.

DANIEL ADLER:

"What I did with my sister Alice was probably going to make some people angry, because I didn't start with any of the movies."

There were already a few laughs from the audience.

"I started her with The Clone Wars."

A mixture of cheers and groans came from different sections of the hall.

"No, no, hear me out," Daniel said, laughing. "For a kid, I think it works really well, because the point was mostly to get her comfortable with the world and the characters. The Jedi, the clones, the Republic, all of that. But especially Anakin Skywalker. I wanted her to really like Anakin."

He paused for a moment.

"Then you show them Episode IV."

The audience became quieter as people realized where he was going with it.

"And Obi-Wan gives Luke the whole story about how Darth Vader betrayed and murdered his father. Now, if you're a kid who has spent all this time watching Anakin in The Clone Wars, you're immediately thinking, 'Okay, who the hell is this Darth Vader guy, and when are we going to kill him?'"

The audience laughed.

Daniel gestured with one hand.

"So after Episode IV, you go straight into Episode V, and then, obviously…"

He mimed an explosion beside his head.

"Mind blown."

The crowd cheered.

"My sister genuinely didn't believe it."

More laughter.

"And I think it hits even harder because she already really liked Anakin from The Clone Wars. She had spent all this time with this guy. She knew him as this funny, heroic Jedi. So when Vader says, 'I am your father,' it isn't just, 'Oh, Vader is Luke's dad.' It becomes, 'Wait. That's Anakin?'"

Daniel shook his head, smiling.

"Then I showed her the prequels. And after that, you finish with Episode VI."

He shrugged.

"Anyway, after all of that, my sister became a massive Star Wars fan, which was great. And you would think, you would think, that after everything I just described, she'd love Leia. Or Luke. Or Han. Maybe Ahsoka, because she grew up watching The Clone Wars. Hell, maybe Darth Vader or Anakin."

Daniel paused.

"But no."

The audience started laughing before he even finished.

"No, my sister's favorite character is Palpatine, for some reason."

The hall erupted.

"She walks around the house saying…"

Daniel lowered his voice into an exaggerated Palpatine impression.

"Gooooood, Daniel. Gooooood."

The audience broke into even louder laughter.

Okay, I'm even more hyped for Rogue One now. He actually knows his Star Wars.

This is a bad watch order. Starting a kid with however many hours of The Clone Wars before even showing them the original movie is insane lol.

u/handydiversity34 replying to u/brief_cursor

I mean, it's kinda alright for children. That's the important part. He wasn't saying this is the definitive order for every adult watching Star Wars for the first time. If you've got a seven-year-old who is much more interested in a colorful animated show than a movie from the '70s, I can see it working.

u/JitteryHallway

The funny thing is that the Vader reveal would actually be fucking devastating with this order.

u/GhastlyEmployment

His sister becoming a Palpatine fan after Daniel carefully designed an entire viewing order around emotionally investing her in Anakin is the funniest possible outcome.

Star Wars really is back, baby. Can't wait for The Last Jedi, Solo, Rogue One, and all the other movies coming. Disney taking this franchise off Lucas was the best thing ever.

GRAHAM NORTON SHOW, CLIP

Meryl Streep sat back on the sofa with Daniel Adler and Jack Whitehall.

Meryl said, "When I turned forty, something strange happened. Within about a year, I started getting offered mothers, grandmothers, well, not quite grandmothers yet, and witches."

The audience laughed.

"I remember thinking, Oh, I see what's happening here. It felt like Hollywood was sending me a signal."

Jack Whitehall laughed beside her while Graham nodded knowingly.

Meryl continued, "And it was a signal about how Hollywood felt about women turning forty. Suddenly, you weren't the woman at the center of the story anymore."

The audience laughed again. Graham and Jack joined in, but Daniel simply looked at her with an amused smile.

Meryl shook her head. "You know, it did make me feel..."

Daniel smoothly cut in.

"So, lots changed for you in the last five years."

There was a beat before the entire audience exploded.

Graham immediately leaned forward. "Ohhh, that's good, Daniel! Very good."

Jack doubled over laughing while Meryl slowly turned toward Daniel with a huge smile.

Daniel was already grinning, clearly pleased with himself.

Meryl leaned toward him.

Daniel leaned forward as though expecting a hug, but Meryl instead brought her face closer. Daniel's eyebrows shot upward just before they briefly kissed on the lips.

Daniel immediately leaned back and placed both hands over his heart, staring ahead as though he had just experienced something life-changing.

Graham pointed at him while laughing.

"That was so smooth, Daniel Adler."

Meryl was laughing beside him while Jack looked almost jealous.

Daniel finally said, "I'm retiring now. There's nowhere else to go."

That only made the audience laugh harder.

@mickelorson

I love how you can tell Danny was just expecting a hug, and then as soon as she starts kissing him, you can literally see his eyebrows shoot up like, "HOLY SHIT." LMFAO. I would die a happy man after that.

@Gremoloid

If I were Daniel Adler's fiancée, I'd be jealous of him!!

@Herodtghegrat

This is how it's done, boys. Y'all take notes from Daniel.

@Marcusharris

Daniel, you silver-tongued devil, you..... 😭

Suicide Squad was coming out in four days, which meant I was once again taking part in what had somehow become a tradition over the last few years: the private early screening before a major DC release.

I stood near the entrance to the screening room with a cup of Coke in one hand, watching people filter through the lobby in small groups.

John was talking with someone when I spotted Jessica walking toward us.

"Hey," I said, glancing behind her. "Where's Matt?"

"He'll be here soon," she replied. She slowed as she reached us, then grabbed my hand and pulled me away from John. "Just a bit of warning, Danny. Matt and John are planning something for your bachelor party."

I turned slowly toward John.

"What?"

Jessica laughed. "Don't look at me. I'm just warning you."

"I told them I didn't want a bachelor party."

"They're planning something, and I'm only telling you because you asked me to."

I sighed and took another drink. I had picked Matt as my best man for the wedding, or technically, I hadn't picked him at all. I had spent so long avoiding the decision between Matt and John that Margot finally lost patience, put a coin in my hand, and told me to choose right then.

So I flipped it.

Fate chose Matt.

"You know," Jessica continued, "they've apparently been talking about this for a while."

"That doesn't make me feel better."

John finally walked over, grinning. "You're getting married once, Danny."

"Hopefully."

Jessica raised an eyebrow.

I looked at her. "What? That's the correct answer. Hopefully once."

A few minutes later, Matt finally appeared. Before I could talk to him, someone from the theater staff came over to tell us they were ready to begin seating. More people were arriving now, and the lobby had grown loud.

The four of us headed inside together and found our seats. Once everyone else had entered and settled in, I stood and made my way toward the front to give the short speech I always did.

"Hello, everyone."

Cheers erupted.

"Welcome back."

Someone shouted my name from somewhere in the middle.

I laughed.

"This one is a little special for us. Suicide Squad is the first R-rated movie in the DCU."

That received another loud response.

"So consider yourselves part of an experiment."

A few people laughed.

"If this thing makes enough money, expect more movies like it."

I kept it brief and made my way back to my seat.

The lights slowly dimmed. Conversations faded around us until the room went quiet, and a few seconds later the DC logo appeared across the screen.

Cheers broke out immediately.

I leaned back as the opening began, but while everyone else's attention settled on the movie, mine wandered almost at once.

I had seen the film enough times to know practically every scene by heart.

What I didn't know was what my two dear friends were planning for my bachelor party.

I glanced sideways.

Matt and John were both watching the screen with expressions of complete innocence.

What the fuck were they planning?
