Chapter 1 - Eye

The stone courtyard was quiet at dawn, wrapped in a thin veil of mist that clung to the earth like a reluctant memory. Huo Yao stood beneath the old gingko tree, her fingers lightly brushing against its rough bark. The air smelled faintly of dew and soil—pure, untouched. A stark contrast to the chaos she remembered from her previous life.

Her eyes, calm yet unfathomably deep, flickered with a trace of thought.

Rebirth.

Even now, the word felt unreal. Yet here she was—back to a time before betrayal, before greed had twisted everything she once held dear. Back when her hands were still clean, and her name had not been dragged through the mud of the pill-making world.

"Huo Yao!" a voice called from behind.

She turned slightly, her expression smoothing into indifference as she saw Tong Yu jogging toward her, slightly out of breath. He was the same as always—bright, talkative, and completely oblivious to the storms that lurked beneath the surface of others.

"You've been standing here since morning. What are you even doing?" he asked, placing his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath.

"Thinking," she replied simply.

Tong Yu blinked. "About what?"

Huo Yao's gaze drifted toward the horizon, where the first rays of sunlight were beginning to break through. "About how to make people regret."

Tong Yu laughed awkwardly. "That's… a bit intense for this early in the morning."

She didn't respond.

Because she wasn't joking.

The Huo family estate was already bustling with activity by the time they returned. Servants moved swiftly through the halls, preparing for the day ahead. The scent of herbs drifted faintly from the alchemy room—a scent that stirred something deep within Huo Yao.

Familiarity.

Power.

In her previous life, she had been known as a prodigy—a genius pill maker whose creations could defy the natural order. Pills that healed incurable diseases, enhanced cultivation, even prolonged life itself.

And yet, that very talent had been her downfall.

Her lips curved slightly, but there was no warmth in the smile.

Not this time.

"Huo Yao, you're back," Madam Huo said as she entered the main hall. Her tone was gentle, but there was a hint of distance in her eyes. "The assessment is today. Have you prepared?"

"Mm." Huo Yao nodded.

Prepared?

That was an understatement.

This so-called "assessment" was nothing more than a basic test of herbal knowledge and pill refinement—something she had mastered long before her rebirth. But she remembered clearly what had happened last time.

She had failed.

Not because she lacked skill, but because someone had tampered with her ingredients.

Her gaze darkened slightly.

Huo Xinyan.

Her cousin.

The one who had smiled sweetly while poisoning her path to success.

"Huo Yao?" Madam Huo called, noticing her silence.

"It's nothing," she replied, lowering her gaze.

But inside, the gears had already begun to turn.

The assessment hall was filled with young members of the Huo family, each standing behind a wooden table lined with various herbs and tools. The atmosphere was tense, filled with anticipation and quiet rivalry.

Huo Yao took her place at the far end, her movements unhurried.

She could feel eyes on her.

Curious.

Dismissive.

Some even mocking.

After all, in everyone's eyes, she was nothing more than a useless daughter who had grown up outside the main family—a girl with no proper training, no foundation.

A faint smile tugged at her lips.

Let them think that.

"Begin," the elder announced.

The moment the signal was given, the room came alive with activity. Herbs were crushed, flames ignited, and the faint hum of spiritual energy filled the air.

Huo Yao, however, remained still.

She looked down at the herbs before her, her gaze sharp.

Just as she expected.

There it was—a subtle discoloration on one of the leaves. Almost imperceptible to the untrained eye.

Poison.

Her fingers hovered over it for a brief moment before she casually set it aside, replacing it with another herb.

Her movements were smooth, natural—so much so that no one seemed to notice.

No one except—

"Well, well," a soft voice said from beside her. "You're being unusually careful today."

Huo Yao didn't need to look to know who it was.

Huo Xinyan.

She turned her head slightly, meeting the other girl's gaze. Xinyan's smile was gentle, almost affectionate—but her eyes betrayed a flicker of surprise.

"Should I not be?" Huo Yao replied calmly.

Xinyan's smile stiffened for a fraction of a second before recovering. "Of course not. I was just worried about you."

"Thank you," Huo Yao said.

Her tone was polite.

Too polite.

For some reason, it made Xinyan uneasy.

Minutes passed.

Then hours.

One by one, participants began to complete their pills, presenting them to the elders for evaluation.

Huo Yao was among the last.

She lifted the lid of her furnace, and a faint, fragrant aroma spread through the air. It was subtle, almost understated—but those with keen senses couldn't help but notice it.

The elders exchanged glances.

Interesting.

"Present your pill," one of them said.

Huo Yao stepped forward, placing the small, jade-colored pill on the table.

The elder picked it up, examining it closely. His brows furrowed slightly.

"This…" he murmured.

"It's flawed, isn't it?" someone whispered from the crowd.

"She probably messed it up."

"Not surprising."

The murmurs grew louder.

But the elder's expression only grew more serious.

Finally, he spoke.

"This is a high-grade Clear Spirit Pill."

Silence.

Complete, utter silence.

Then—

"What?!"

"That's impossible!"

"She must have cheated!"

The room erupted into chaos.

Even Huo Xinyan's composure cracked, her eyes widening in disbelief.

High-grade?

That was something even seasoned pill makers struggled to achieve.

How could Huo Yao—someone with no formal training—produce something like that?

The elder raised his hand, silencing the crowd.

"Not only is it high-grade," he continued, "but its purity is… nearly perfect."

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap.

Huo Yao stood calmly, as if none of this concerned her.

But inside—

She was smiling.

This was just the beginning.

Later that evening, the Huo family estate was anything but quiet.

News of Huo Yao's performance had spread like wildfire, reaching every corner of the household.

Some were shocked.

Some were skeptical.

And some—

Were afraid.

In a secluded courtyard, Huo Xinyan stood alone, her hands clenched tightly at her sides.

"How…?" she whispered.

She had made sure the ingredients were tampered with.

There was no way Huo Yao could have succeeded.

Unless—

Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft sound behind her.

"You seem troubled."

Xinyan turned sharply, only to find Huo Yao standing a few steps away.

Silent.

Composed.

Watching.

"I…" Xinyan forced a smile. "I'm just surprised. You did very well today."

"Did I?" Huo Yao tilted her head slightly.

There was something about her gaze—something cold, something knowing—that made Xinyan's heart skip a beat.

"Yes, of course," she said quickly. "I'm proud of you."

"Proud?" Huo Yao repeated softly.

She took a step forward.

Then another.

Each step felt heavier than the last, as if the air itself had grown dense.

"You should be more careful," Huo Yao said suddenly.

Xinyan froze. "What do you mean?"

Huo Yao stopped in front of her, her expression unreadable.

"Poison is a double-edged sword," she said. "If you're not careful… you might be the one who gets hurt."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Huo Yao turned and walked away, her figure gradually disappearing into the shadows.

Xinyan remained where she stood, her body trembling slightly.

Because in that moment—

She understood.

Huo Yao knew.

And that realization was far more terrifying than anything else.

Back in her room, Huo Yao sat by the window, gazing up at the night sky.

The moon hung high above, casting a pale glow over the world.

She raised her hand, studying it quietly.

These hands…

In her previous life, they had created miracles.

And destruction.

This time—

She would choose differently.

But one thing would remain the same.

Anyone who stood in her way…

Would pay the price.

Her lips curved into a faint smile.

But wicked one she kept smiling

Back in her room, Huo Yao sat quietly by the window, the silver moonlight casting soft shadows across her face.

Everything had changed.

The weak, overlooked girl from before was gone.

In her place stood someone far more dangerous.

Her fingers tapped lightly against the table, a calm, steady rhythm—like the ticking of a clock counting down.

"They've made their move…" she murmured softly.

Her eyes darkened.

"…now it's my turn."

A faint smile appeared on her lips—cold, confident, and filled with promise.

The balance had already begun to shift.

And this time—

She would be the one in control.
