After that, Elizabeth rode in the carriage more often than not.
There were four of us in it now, and we rearranged ourselves around her without anybody discussing it. Sophie moved to the bench beside Daphne. I gave up my corner, which I will say only once, because I would like it noted. Elizabeth took it, with her arm against the side wall where the carriage wouldn't knock it. James rode at the window.
By the evening, we were talking about food.
The waystation that night was a small one, with a kitchen that had been asked to feed forty people at an hour's notice and had produced a stew.
"I don't think this has been near a vegetable," said Sophie, looking into her bowl. "I think a vegetable has been described to it."
"It's fine," said James.
"It's brown."
"Food can be brown."
"Everything in it is the same brown. That's not cooking. That's a decision."
"You've had two bowls," said Daphne.
"I'm being fair to it," said Sophie. "I'm giving it every chance."
