Chapter 126 - Chapter 20

Group five found the file room.

It was not where William had expected it to be.

That was the first sign that something had changed — Victor's contingency locations followed patterns, and the patterns included where he kept his records, and this was not that location. Which meant he had altered the pattern. Which meant he was more cautious than William's intelligence had accounted for.

"He knows someone's been in his operation," William said. Low. To Emmet, who was beside him.

"He's known for a while," Emmet said.

"He may know about us specifically," William said. "Being here. Tonight."

Emmet looked at him.

"Does that change the plan," Emmet said.

William looked at the room they had found instead of the file room — a room that was filled, floor to ceiling, with filing cabinets. Rows of them, dense and organized, the particular accumulation of a record-keeper who had been keeping records for a very long time and had the space to store them properly.

"No," William said. "It changes how carefully we move."

Mr. Tempest was already at the nearest cabinet.

He moved through the room with the quick purposeful assessment of a man who had spent years in the old chosen ones' operations and knew what a filing system looked like when it contained something worth finding. He pulled a drawer. Scanned the contents. Closed it. Moved to the next.

Mrs. Tempest was at the opposite wall doing the same.

They did not speak to each other.

They did not need to — the compressed language of two people who had worked together through enough real situations that the work itself was a form of communication, each of them knowing what the other was looking for and trusting the other to recognize it when they found it.

"What are we looking for specifically," Mrs. Tempest said. To William.

"The demon queen's real plan," William said. "Victor keeps the operational material in the file room. Strategy, objectives, the full scope of what the demon queen has told him she intends." He paused. "The generals are part of it. The blood collection is part of it. But there is something larger. Something he has been working toward that none of us have the full picture of yet."

The cabinets were organized by a system that was not alphabetical and not chronological and that took William approximately three minutes to parse, reading drawer labels with the quick intelligence of someone who had learned Victor's organizational logic from four years inside his operation.

"Here," he said.

He pulled a drawer.

Inside were files — dense, closely written, organized with the same dense precision as everything else Victor touched. William reached in and extracted a file and opened it and read the first page and then looked at Emmet.

"She doesn't want to rule the world," William said.

The room was very quiet.

"She wants to unmake it," William said. "The seven generals are not an army. They are the instruments of seven specific unravelings. One for each of the sins — not a metaphor, a literal designation. She intends each general to target and destroy one of the seven fundamental structures that hold the world together." He looked at the file. "The generals are not weapons. They are ends."

The filing room was silent.

The particular silence of people receiving information that is larger than what they had been preparing for.

Mr. Tempest looked at his wife.

Mrs. Tempest looked at the file in William's hands.

"Then we take everything," she said. "Not a summary. Everything."

"Yes," William said.

He began to gather files.

The room accelerated around him — all five of them moving now, pulling drawers, extracting what mattered, the quiet becoming something else as the sounds of the facility shifted somewhere above them, footsteps on the floor overhead, the particular rhythm of a patrol that was moving with slightly more urgency than a patrol moved on a normal night.

"They know we're here," Emmet said. Flat. Certain.

"Yes," William said. Not pausing.

"We need to move faster," Emmet said.

"I know," William said. "I'm moving faster."
