Juvia and Lisanna were undergoing psychological trials. Juvia's aim is to get from one end of a tunnel to another without making even a single comment about Gray. But she was finding it difficult cause the tunnel contained pictures of Gray plastered from one end to another. And every time she uttered his name, a hammer came out, smashing straight to her face and making her go straight back to the start of the tunnel.
Lisanna at the time was playing a game of cat and mouse. Almost literally. Her animal forms were being tested by a variety of animals around her. The moment she choses one, the animal which is the direct predator of the animal she chose comes to beat the crap out of her. And when she chose another form, the animal is switched with the corresponding one.
Gray was having a hard time completing his part of the quest. His trial was wearing a total of twenty clothes at the same time. One over the other. But the problem was the clothes were scattered across the room. And the clothes had the condition of randomly changing locations if it is removed from the person's body. The sun was scorching and Gray was increasing his rate of removing clothes unconsciously. So basically, he was putting on and putting off clothes again and again while moving from one place to another. Anyone watching knew that it won't end soon.
Loki on the other hand had the task of not talking to the scantily clad ladies surrounding him. Each a creation by Mavis herself, made in such a way as to torture Loki into losing his control. But each time he spoke, he was blasted with a penalty that completely froze him for a few minutes while making watch old men wearing underwear dance in front of him. Making him scream in fear. Might cause trauma in the future.
Elfman has to undergo a tea ceremony while making sure to not even break a single rule displayed on the board. If so the entire tea ceremony explodes, making him start again from the beginning. Evergreen had to undergo manual labour that she detested to the bone.
Gajeel had a similar trial to Natsu. The breathing technique had elevated his senses as a dragon slayer and currently he had reached the level where he gets motion sickness. Levy had to correct mistakes in ten books at the same time. All the books were simultaneously flipping pages every thirty seconds. If the flipped page had not been corrected completely, the books explode and she had to start once again with an entirely new set of books. Even with her glasses that can speed read, she was having extreme difficulty as most pages contained mathematical equations she had never even seen before.
Freed was having a test of dispelling a rune circle that was changing constantly. Any wrong move, he gets scolded by a Laxus made from illusion. Even knowing that it was a fake Laxus did less to reduce Freed's emotional damage. Bickslow had to use his head to complete a puzzle that was increasing migraines for both him as well as his contracted souls.
The S class wizards who were watching this happen were feeling terrified at what was happening. It might seem like jokes to most outside the guild. But the ones who were in the guild clearly knew how much stress the guild members were going through right now. Even Erza did not feel like encouraging this as her instincts told her that she will be having worse if Karna and Mavis created a trap based on her fears.
The other too were having the same thought as they saw Mavis and Karna laughing while watching the guildmembers try to handle their greatest personal weaknesses. They were feeling glad about the fact that they were not his years trial takers. There were not this many S class wizards in the previous years, so Makarov had taken the test by himself and one or two S class wizards.
But seeing the increase in number is what prompted this years test to be taken in an organised manner involving almost every single S class member in the guild. And since only one person can get the S class title, chances are that this will become a routine in the coming years.
"Juvia passed her test after Lisanna closed her eyes with one of her animal forms" Erza said as she went to take their battle will test.
The test in itself is not to see whether they had the skills to be an S class. If they did not have the skill, they would not have been chosen as a candidate for the selection trials. The abilities of the selected members were already clear, and it is easily seen that none of them had the ability to beat an S class wizard who was their opponent for this test. The test is there only to test their battle instincts and their willpower. As long as they manage to surpass a certain threshold, they are allowed to pass.
Though this threshold is entirely up to the S class wizard they are facing, and they can decide what quality the test taker must present to pass their trial.
"Natsu's here. I will go to smack some sense into that guy" Cana said as she went to test Natsu. Damn, her power might not match Gildarts, but the lethality of her skills easily surpasses Gildart's strongest spells.
"My brother's here, I want to see for myself how much he had grown" Mirajane was next as Evergreen managed to help Elfman in completing the tea ceremony due to her expertise in dealing with noble eloquence.
"I 'll handle Meredy and Lucy" Ultear said with a sadistic smirk that made Karna pray for both the girls.
And then came Karna's turn. He saw Bickslow and Freed complete their tests individually. They seemed to see their tests as a sort of challenge they had to conquer themselves.
"Alright, time to beat the crap out of them" Karna muttered as he went for the test.
