Chapter 110 - CHAPTER 101. INTERVIEW

The Compliance office was not in the basement.

It was on the ground floor of a building that smelled newer than it was, with a reception desk that had a bowl of pens chained to a block of wood.

A sign on the wall behind the receptionist said:

UNIVERSITY COMPLIANCE

INFORMATION • REVIEW • SUPPORT

The words were printed in a font that tried to look friendly.

Harry read them once and did not let them soften anything.

He held the appointment slip in his hand.

COMPLIANCE INTERVIEW — APPOINTMENT

Date.

Time.

Office.

Attendance requested. Bring identification.

Harry did not fold it.

He handed it over.

The receptionist looked at the slip, then at his face.

"Name," she said.

"Harry Stark," he replied.

She wrote it into a log book.

Not a ledger like the lab.

A guest book with lighter lines.

She slid a small card across the desk.

VISITOR

A blank line.

Signature.

Harry read it.

He did not sign.

He said, "Define visitor."

The receptionist blinked.

"It's just for the building," she said.

Harry nodded once.

He took the pen, wrote his name, and wrote the time.

He did not add anything else.

The receptionist placed the card in a plastic sleeve and clipped it to a lanyard.

She handed it to him.

"Have a seat," she said.

Harry sat.

Across the hallway, Lena sat in a chair near a window that faced brick.

Not inside the office.

Outside threshold.

She held her folder on her lap with both hands.

She did not open it.

Harry did not look at her for long.

He had learned that looking could be counted.

But he saw her anyway.

She was there.

That was the only proof he needed.

A man opened a door and said Harry's last name without mispronouncing it.

"Stark."

Harry stood.

He did not look at Lena.

He walked to the door and stepped into the office.

The man closed it behind him.

The room was clean.

A table.

Two chairs.

A file cabinet.

A small recorder on the table with a red light that was not on.

The man sat.

He gestured at the other chair.

Harry did not sit yet.

He looked at the recorder.

"Define whether you are recording," he said.

The man's mouth tightened.

"We take notes," he said.

Harry nodded once.

"Define notes," Harry said.

The man held the pause.

Then he slid a form across the table.

INTERVIEW NOTICE

This meeting may be documented for review purposes.

Participation is voluntary.

A signature line sat at the bottom.

Harry read the line.

He did not touch the pen.

He said, "Define voluntary."

The man's eyes narrowed slightly.

"It means you can leave," he said.

Harry nodded once.

He said, "Then I do not sign. Proceed or I leave."

The man stared.

Then he flipped the form over and set it aside.

"Sit," he said.

Harry sat.

The man opened a folder and placed a single page in front of him.

ACCESS PATTERN SUMMARY

He did not slide it to Harry.

He kept it on his side of the table, angled toward himself.

Harry noted the angle.

The man spoke in a voice that tried to sound like policy.

"We're conducting a routine review of restricted materials access during the review period," he said.

Harry nodded once.

The man continued, "This is not disciplinary."

Harry nodded again.

"Define routine," Harry said.

The man's jaw tightened.

"It's standard," he said.

Harry looked at him.

"Standard is not scope," Harry said.

The man held the pause.

Then he said, "We confirm understanding. We confirm compliance."

Harry nodded.

"Receipt of policy information," Harry said.

The man stared.

"We also confirm you are not circumventing restrictions," he said.

Harry kept his voice even.

"Define circumventing," he said.

The man exhaled once.

"Using someone else to obtain restricted information," he said.

Harry nodded.

He said, "Lena Morales follows restrictions."

The man's eyes narrowed.

"You are here about her too?" he asked.

Harry did not argue.

He said, "You scheduled me."

The man held the pause.

Then he leaned back.

"Let's keep this simple," he said.

He slid a second form across.

COMPLIANCE STATEMENT — REVIEW PERIOD

I affirm I have not accessed restricted materials outside permitted conditions.

I affirm I have not directed another student to access restricted materials on my behalf.

I affirm I will comply with all review period restrictions.

Signature.

Harry read the word affirm and felt the room tighten.

He did not pick up the pen.

He said, "Define affirm."

The man's mouth tightened.

"It means you state it," he said.

Harry nodded once.

He took the pen and drew a line through affirm.

He wrote above each instance:

Receipt of policy statement; no admission implied.

He wrote in the margin:

I will comply with posted restrictions. I will not sign statements framed as confessions.

He initialed.

He slid the paper back.

The man's eyes hardened.

"That is not what the form says," he said.

Harry kept his voice even.

"It is what I will sign," Harry said.

The man stared at the edits.

Then he leaned forward.

"You have been present during microforms access," he said.

Harry nodded once.

"Define present," Harry said.

The man's mouth tightened.

"Outside the room," he said.

Harry nodded.

"Outside threshold," he said.

The man's eyes flicked.

"You use that phrase," he said.

Harry did not deny it.

"It describes policy," Harry said.

The man tapped the table with one finger.

"You are aware of a government deposit entry involving W. Lawson," he said.

Harry did not react.

He waited.

The man said, "Do you understand why that triggers review?"

Harry kept his voice even.

"Define triggers," he said.

The man exhaled.

"It creates cross-reference risk," he said.

Harry nodded once.

"What risk," Harry said.

The man leaned back.

"Dissemination," he said.

Harry nodded.

"Then your concern is distribution," he said.

The man stared.

"It's bigger than that," he said.

Harry kept his voice level.

"Then define bigger," he said.

The man held the pause.

Then he shifted to a different page.

"You accessed MF-1995-017," he said.

Harry did not deny it.

He said, "Receipt of access is in the basement log."

The man's eyes narrowed.

"Did you copy any restricted text?" he asked.

Harry shook his head once.

"No," he said.

The man looked at him.

"Did you transcribe any restricted text?"

Harry shook his head again.

"No," he said.

The man's mouth tightened.

"Did you direct Ms. Morales to transcribe restricted text?"

Harry looked at him.

"Define restricted," Harry said.

The man's jaw tightened.

"Anything marked," he said.

Harry nodded once.

"Then no," Harry said.

The man watched him for a beat.

Then he said, "Why are you interested in Lawson?"

Harry did not answer immediately.

He looked at the recorder again.

The red light was still off.

He looked back at the man.

He said, "Academic review of descriptor-level metadata; verification of standard code references only."

The man's eyes narrowed.

"That is not a reason," he said.

Harry's voice stayed even.

"It is scope," he said.

The man held the pause.

Then he said, "You're avoiding the question."

Harry nodded once.

"Yes," he said.

The man stared.

"Because the question is not scoped," Harry added.

The man's mouth tightened.

"You realize this looks like concealment," he said.

Harry nodded.

"Appearance is not evidence," he said.

The man leaned forward.

"Your name is Stark," he said.

Harry did not move.

The man continued, "Do you understand how that affects perceptions?"

Harry kept his voice level.

"Define perception," he said.

The man's eyes narrowed.

He pushed the compliance statement back toward Harry.

"Sign it," he said.

Harry did not touch it.

He said, "Send it in writing with scope and authority. I will respond in writing."

The man stared.

"This is the interview," he said.

Harry nodded.

"And this is my response," he said.

The man held the pause.

Then he reached into his folder and pulled out a slip.

It looked like the ones stamped in the basement.

REVIEW CONTINUES — ADDITIONAL FOLLOW-UP POSSIBLE

A space for initials.

A space for signature.

Harry read it once.

He took the pen.

He drew a line through signature.

He wrote above it:

Receipt of notice.

He initialed.

The man stared.

Then he stamped it.

RECEIVED

He slid it across.

Harry took it.

He stood.

The man's voice followed him.

"We may speak to Ms. Morales again," he said.

Harry did not turn back.

He said, "Scope must remain academic. No liability conduit."

The man did not answer.

Harry opened the door.

In the hallway, Lena was still in the chair.

Her folder was still closed.

Her hands were still on it.

She looked up when Harry stepped out.

He did not speak immediately.

He handed her the stamped slip.

RECEIVED

Lena read it.

"Follow-up possible," she said.

Harry nodded once.

Lena's voice stayed even. "Did you sign anything."

Harry shook his head once.

"No," he said.

Lena nodded.

Harry sat beside her.

Not close enough to touch.

Close enough that their shoulders could have.

He did not let them.

Lena looked at him.

"They asked about Lawson," she said.

Harry nodded once.

Lena's eyes held his.

"What did you say," she said.

Harry did not use a question mark.

He said, "Scope."

Lena nodded once.

"And the word companion," she said.

Harry's mouth tightened.

He said, "They tried again."

Lena's pencil moved once.

She wrote one line on a clean sheet.

No new names on paper.

Harry read it.

He nodded once.

They stood.

They walked back to the library without speaking.

Their table was empty when they returned.

The lamp circle waited as if it had not been claimed.

Lena sat first.

Harry sat across from her.

He opened his notebook and wrote:

Compliance interview completed. No confession signed. Receipt of follow-up notice obtained. Lawson question refused as unscoped. Morales follow-up possible.

He closed the notebook.

Lena's pencil moved.

She wrote one line.

They are counting our words now.

Harry nodded once.

"Yes," he said.

Lena's mouth tightened.

"Then we speak less," she said.

Harry nodded again.

He did not argue.

He said, "We write."

Lena looked up.

"And we stay," she said.

Harry's reply came after a beat.

"Yes," he said.

The follow-up arrived before sunset.

Not as a phone call.

As paper.

A sealed envelope in Harry's campus mailbox with UNIVERSITY COMPLIANCE in the return corner.

Inside was a single sheet titled:

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS — REVIEW PERIOD

The questions were numbered.

List all restricted materials spaces accessed since March 1, 1995.

List all government deposit materials accessed (call numbers).

Identify all persons who accompanied you to restricted materials spaces.

Confirm whether you have discussed restricted materials content with any person.

At the bottom:

Return in writing within five business days.

A signature line.

Not for him.

For the office.

Harry read the questions once.

He did not sit down.

He carried the sheet to the library.

Lena was already at the table.

He set the paper down between them without sliding it into her hands.

Lena read question three.

Her jaw tightened.

"Accompanied," she said.

Harry nodded once.

Lena's voice stayed even. "They changed the word."

Harry did not deny it.

He opened his notebook and wrote the four questions as headers.

He did not answer them yet.

He wrote beneath question three:

Define accompanied as physical presence inside restricted space.

Lena watched his pen.

"You will answer in their language," she said.

Harry nodded.

"Scope," he said.

He wrote beneath question one:

Restricted materials spaces accessed: Government Documents window; microforms by appointment under Morales requester; archive Window 3 (public desk).

He paused.

Then crossed out archive Window 3 and rewrote:

Archive desk: noncirculating request counter only (no restricted space entry).

Lena's pencil moved once.

She wrote one line on her own paper.

Do not widen your footprint.

Harry read it.

He nodded once.

He wrote beneath question two:

Government deposit materials accessed: MF-1995-017 (after-action summary) only.

He did not write CIRC‑11C‑94‑01.

He did not write STD‑11C‑TOL‑01.

He did not write any name.

Lena noticed the absence.

"You're leaving it out," she said.

Harry's voice stayed even.

"It asked what I accessed," he said. "I did not access the circular. You did."

Lena held the pause.

Then nodded once.

"You are keeping ownership clean," she said.

Harry did not answer with pride.

He wrote beneath question three:

No persons accompanied me inside restricted materials spaces. I waited outside threshold when requester-only policies applied.

He wrote beneath question four:

No discussion of restricted text. Citations only.

He stopped.

He looked at Lena.

He said, "You will receive your own letter."

Lena did not deny it.

She said, "I will answer scope."

Harry nodded once.

He folded the compliance questions and placed them back into the envelope.

He did not seal it.

He wrote on the front:

Response in writing.

On the way out, Aldrich was waiting near the corridor that led to his office.

He did not look like a professor who had spare time.

He looked like a man who had been made part of someone else's process.

"Stark," he said.

Harry stopped.

"Morales," Aldrich added.

Lena stopped too.

Aldrich's eyes moved between them.

"They called again," he said.

Lena did not speak.

Harry did not speak.

Aldrich held a folder without letterhead.

Just a stamp.

REVIEW

Aldrich's mouth tightened.

"They asked if your work has 'external relevance,'" he said.

Harry kept his voice even.

"Define external," he said.

Aldrich stared.

Then he exhaled.

"You're consistent," he said, not as praise.

Aldrich looked at Lena.

"You keep doing exactly what I told you," he said.

Lena nodded once.

Aldrich looked at Harry.

"And you," he said, "you keep my student out of liability. You keep your questions on paper. You keep your answers smaller than their questions."

Harry nodded once.

Aldrich's voice lowered.

"If they offer you a shortcut," he said, "it will be a trap."

Harry did not argue.

He said, "Yes."

Aldrich's gaze held his.

Then Aldrich said, quieter, "They don't like that you don't panic."

Harry did not respond.

Aldrich stepped back.

"Go," he said. "And don't let them make a romance clause into a disciplinary one."

Lena's pencil stopped.

Harry's mouth tightened.

He nodded once.

They walked away.

That night, in Room 3B, the key tag lay in the center of the table.

Lena had signed it out with Aldrich's dated slip.

Harry wrote a new line under the Lawson header.

1995: Compliance interview attempted confessional form; refused; follow-up notice received; Morales may be contacted; scope reiterated.

He closed the notebook.

Lena watched him close it.

"You're tired," she said.

Harry nodded once.

Lena's voice stayed quiet.

"They want you alone," she said.

Harry did not deny it.

He said, "I am not alone."

Lena's eyes lifted.

The sentence sat between them.

Not romantic.

Not safe.

True.

Lena nodded once.

"Okay," she said.

They returned the key on time.

Lena signed the ledger.

Harry watched the clerk place it back on the hook.

He did not write about the hook.

He wrote about the refusal.

The lamp went dark.
