Back in the Hall, Naruto exhaled and stretched his arms.

"Well… guess we're doing this the old-fashioned way."

Sasuke's lips curled slightly. "Good. It's time someone reminded these people who I am."

Sakura looked between them and smiled gently. "Let's just all get through this."

Naruto chuckled. "Of course."

But inside, his thoughts were far more complicated.

If they force me to fight Gaara… things might spiral out of control. I can't let him happen… not yet.

Across the room, Gaara stared directly at him, hands loose at his sides. The gourd on his back shifted ever so slightly.

"Naruto Uzumaki…" He whispered. "You're the only one I want to fight."

...

A heavy silence blanketed the massive hall as Anko stepped forward. The last whispers and mutters among the Genin died down under her piercing gaze.

She flicked her hair back and gave the crowd a lopsided smile.

"Now then, we will begin the explanation of the third exam from the Third Hokage himself," She announced, voice loud and commanding. "Listen carefully, everybody!"

She stepped aside with an almost theatrical gesture, positioning herself near the Hokage, who moved with calm and deliberate steps to the forefront.

All eyes turned to the man known as the Professo, Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage.

Despite his age, his posture remained straight. The air around him shifted, as if the very room bent to his will. He rested both hands atop his staff and cleared his throat once.

"Ahem."

The murmurs ceased completely.

He let the silence stretch for a heartbeat, allowing the gravity of his presence to settle into the hearts of the young ninja before him.

"Before we begin with the rules of the third exam," Hiruzen started slowly, "there is something important I want you all to understand."

His eyes, sharp and wise, swept over the faces of the twenty-one Genin before him.

Naruto stood at the front of Team 7, his gaze steady, curious. Beside him, Sasuke watched with furrowed brows, arms crossed and jaw tight. Sakura stood silently, her posture upright, glancing briefly at Naruto every now and then, waiting for his reaction to everything.

Ino leaned against her teammates on the side, her head tilted playfully, but her ears were sharp. Shikamaru sighed deeply as though he already anticipated a lecture, while Chouji's eyes flicked between the Hokage and the sealed snack pouch in his sleeve.

Hinata, her form taller and more elegant now, focused completely on Hiruzen's words. Not a flicker of doubt or shyness clouded her gaze. Behind her, Kiba fidgeted slightly, sniffing, while Shino remained motionless.

Neji stood like a statue, unreadable. Lee was almost vibrating with eagerness, while Tenten stood ready and respectful.

"The true purpose of these exams..." Hiruzen began, voice carrying clearly through the chamber, "...is not merely to test your individual strength, nor is it just to promote you to the rank of Chuunin."

"Why do allied nations conduct these exams together?"

He paused, letting the question hang. His tone lowered.

"Raising the level of our ninja. Promoting friendship between nations. That is the polite explanation."

"But…"

His eyes sharpened, and he said. "That would be a terrible misunderstanding."

There was a subtle murmur in the hall.

Chouji blinked, and Sakura's brow furrowed, even Sasuke narrowed his eyes slightly.

Hiruzen continued. "These exams… are, in truth, a microcosm of war. A proxy battlefield between allied nations."

A faint gasp echoed from a few Genin.

Hiruzen's tone was no longer the kindly old man of the village. It was steel wrapped in wisdom.

"If we look back through history, today's allies were yesterday's enemies. Nations once vied for dominance — not with diplomacy, but with blood."

"And in order to avoid the meaningless destruction of resources and military strength… they created a system."

His staff tapped once on the stone floor. "The Chuunin Exams."

The silence fell over the hall again.

"This exam is not just for you to prove yourselves. It is a stage — a spectacle. A performance, yes, but with deadly stakes."

He turned slightly, gesturing to the back wall, where the symbol of the Leaf Village loomed high.

"Feudal Lords, village Leaders, wealthy merchants, and even Clients who request our services… They all come to watch. They observe how strong our village is. They measure our power."

His voice turned cold. "If a village is seen as weak, requests for missions disappear. And when the economy dries up, a village begins to crumble from within."

"But if a village displays overwhelming strength… then fear, respect, and resources flow into it."

Ino glanced sideways at Hinata. Her usual cheerful demeanor faded slightly. No wonder Naruto-sama wants us to be strong...

Naruto said nothing, but his thoughts were racing. So that's how they keep the balance. That's why the test matters. This is just the surface.

Hiruzen went on. "This exam… is a place to show the true strength of your village."

"And that strength is found in you — the ninja."

He looked at Gaara for a moment, then at Neji, then finally at Naruto.

"But it is not your flashy jutsu or bloodlines that define you."

"True strength is revealed… when you fight for your life."

The entire room grew colder, a bit more focused.

Sakura gulped softly. Fight… for life?

Hiruzen lifted his chin. "That is why this exam exists. That is why death is not removed from the rules."

"It is a tradition, no, a necessity. We maintain peace by demonstrating strength. We display balance by shedding blood. This is the weight of the shinobi."

His eyes now gleamed, reflecting both sorrow and pride. "You are the pride of your village."

"And this exam… is a test of dreams, of will, and of the unseen war that supports our peace."

He let that sit and then stepped back.

"That is what the Chuunin Exam is about."

A silence as deep as the sea fell across the room.

No one spoke.

Even Gai was silent, arms folded, his face solemn.

Naruto's jaw tightened slightly. A fight for life, huh? Fine. If that's what it takes to change the world… I'll do it my way.

Sasuke clenched his fists, fire simmering in his eyes.

Sakura took a long, deep breath. For Naruto-sama… for myself… I will not lose here.

Shikamaru looked at the floor. Troublesome.

Rock Lee trembled, filled with youthful energy. This… is the battlefield of flames!!!

Thud!

A soft landing echoed beside Hiruzen as a figure appeared in a flash of movement.

The man was thin, pale, and slightly hunched. His eyes drooped with exhaustion, but his posture was that of a man with precision and discipline.

"Hokage-sama," He said.Ā "Please allow me, Gekkō Hayate, to explain the rules of the Third Stage, as I have been appointed its proctor."

His voice was quiet and raspy, yet commanding in its own right.

Hiruzen nodded slowly. "I leave it to you, Hayate."

And with that, the Professor stepped away, allowing the next act of the stage to unfold.
