Chapter 442 - Ch 248 - Gaara's Dream

"I know that," Gaara repeated, eyes narrowing as he stared into the bustling street below, "but I will be overwhelmed with an even greater suffering if I just follow his orders like a puppet."

His voice was firm, unshaken, as though the conviction had been burning inside him for days.

Kankurō's jaw tightened. "Gaara…"

"I just have to work hard and carve out a future for myself," Gaara continued, the rare light of determination flickering in his eyes. "I must not escape to the path of lonely solitude. If I do that… someday…"

His words hung in the air as he raised his gaze toward the lantern-lit streets. He didn't see strangers anymore as he saw threads of connection, fragile bonds woven between people. Lovers holding hands, parents guiding children, friends laughing together.

For the first time, Gaara's heart yearned for it.

"Someday… I can be like him."

Kankurō blinked, startled. "Who?"

Gaara turned his head, emerald eyes steady as they locked onto his brother's. "Naruto Uzumaki."

Kankurō's expression faltered. "…Him?"

The name echoed in his mind, a jolt of disbelief coursing through him. Naruto Uzumaki?

That blonde-haired genius from the exams? That was the one who had reached his brother, the brother who once crushed lives without hesitation?

"I only knew hate and malice up until now…" Gaara's voice grew softer, his gaze distant. "…But now, there is something I understand about those bonds that people share with each other. Naruto Uzumaki made me believe that pain, sadness… and happiness… can be shared with others."

His hand slowly clenched at his side. "I learned that through getting to know him. He knew the same pain as me. He taught me that I could change the path of my life."

And then, Gaara did something Kankurō never thought he would see. His lips curved, faint but unmistakable, into a smile.

"Gaara…" Kankurō's voice cracked with shock. His breath hitched, the sight unsettling and almost unreal.

That smile wasn't cruel, wasn't mocking. It was more like a human.

"But when did you fight Naruto? What do you mean by the same pain as you?" Kankurō managed to stammer, trying to ground himself back in reason.

Gaara's eyes hardened, but his voice was calm. "He is also someone who has a monster inside him… like me."

Kankurō froze. His eyes widened in horror. "He had what?"

His voice thundered against the rooftop, louder than he intended. He took a sharp step forward, panic etched across his face. "This is bad…"

"Kankurō!" Gaara's voice cut him off sharply, calm but commanding.

Kankurō halted, and he looked at Gaara's face again and realized that his little brother, who once knew nothing but bloodlust, wasn't trembling or unraveling.

He was at peace.

"I was finally able to sleep in peace for an entire night," Gaara confessed quietly, as though revealing a secret too fragile for the world to hear.

Kankurō's chest tightened again as his mind reeled. For Gaara, who had lived every day and night drowning in madness, that was no small claim.

"I am grateful to him," Gaara continued, his gaze softening as he looked toward the village. "It was because of him that I realized… someday, I want to feel needed by someone. Not as a frightening weapon… but as a human being."

His words weren't desperate. They were steady, unshaken, as though he had rehearsed them in his soul.

"Gaara…" Kankurō whispered, stunned beyond words. He couldn't deny the change standing before him.

"Gaara, it's not going to be easy," Kankurō finally admitted, his tone more somber than before. "The majority of the village fears you. Even if we, your siblings, stand by your side… they see you as something else. Something dangerous."

"I've thought about that as well," Gaara replied calmly. His expression sharpened, resolve blazing in his eyes. "That is why… as a Sand ninja, I will strive to become the Kazekage."

Kankurō's eyes widened again.

"To live bonded with the village," Gaara continued, his voice filled with conviction. "I want to work hard… and become acknowledged by others. Just like Naruto, one day I will become the Kazekage!"

The wind carried his declaration into the night.

For the first time, Gaara didn't look like a weapon forged by fear, but he looked like a man reaching toward a future.

And Kankurō, despite his doubts, couldn't help but believe even just a little.

------

It was nighttime.

The moon hung like a pale guardian in the sky, scattering its glow across the village. The streets below were dimly lit by lanterns, where the voices of late-night wanderers blended with the gentle rustle of the evening wind.

At the top of a building, Gaara stood silently, his still frame like a statue carved from shadow. His cold green eyes observed every fleeting moment of connection below the clasp of a hand, the tilt of a lover's smile, the sound of laughter carried into the night.

Slowly, almost imperceptibly, he was beginning to grasp what such emotions meant and why they mattered.

Whoosh!

A sudden rush of air broke the silence.

Dosu landed lightly on the rooftop, the metal of his gauntlets gleaming dully under the moonlight. His single visible eye narrowed as he walked forward with a measured calm.

"You stood here all day?" Dosu asked, his voice coated in sarcasm.

Gaara turned his head slightly. Though irritation flickered deep within him at the man's mocking tone, his expression remained composed and eerily calm, almost amicable. His gaze fixed on Dosu with unnerving steadiness.

"What do you want?" Gaara asked, his voice even, cold yet controlled.

Dosu tilted his head, smirking beneath the wrappings. "I thought I'd crush you now."

For a moment, Gaara's mind replayed Kankurō's words from earlier that day, words that had cut deeper than any blade:

"I don't want to say this… but you're nothing but a frightening weapon to the village."

Back then, Gaara had remained silent. Now, as his gaze bore into Dosu, that silence shaped itself into something more.

Step by step, Gaara advanced, his sandals clicking softly against the stone as the distance between them shrank.

"If I am to defeat you now," Dosu continued, his voice sharp, "there'd be the possibility for me to fight against Sasuke."

Gaara halted, standing less than ten meters away, his figure draped in moonlight. His stillness made the air grow heavy, as if the rooftop itself was holding its breath.

"I know your sand attack," Dosu said, raising his gauntlet with confidence. "I wonder which is faster... your sand, or my sound?"

Gaara's eyelids lowered, his lashes casting faint shadows across his pale skin. He raised his left hand, fingers spreading slowly, deliberately, like a predator stretching its claws.

Without a word, he snapped his wrist.

Whip!

A small blob of sand shot out with precision, whistling through the night air.

CLAMP!

Dosu flinched, stunned. The sand burrowed deep into the chamber of his gauntlet before he could react. A harsh grinding noise followed, and then, the gauntlet's deadly hum was gone, blocked, suffocated by Gaara's will.

Dosu's eye widened. His greatest weapon had been sealed in an instant.

Gaara opened his eyes, calm and merciless. His voice was quiet, but it cut sharper than steel.

"Retreat now… and I will overlook this matter."

The rooftop fell silent again. Only the faint rustle of sand lingered in the air, swirling around Gaara like a living threat, waiting to consume the man before him should he dare defy the warning.
