The dawn came cold and pale, seeping through the clouds like a half-hearted promise of warmth. They hadn't slept much. No one trusted the darkness anymore not after the uneasy silence of the night, and not with the hum of that fragment pulsing faintly in Vile's pack.
They broke camp before sunrise. The air was sharp with frost, the earth damp beneath their boots as they moved along a narrow mountain path that twisted down toward the forest below. A thin mist clung to the trees like old ghosts, swallowing their shapes one by one as they pushed deeper in.
Alex led the way this time, eyes scanning the terrain. Kira stayed close behind him, calm but alert, her focus sharp on every shift in the environment.
Mya walked with Lyra beside her. Lyra's energy made the silence feel less heavy, while Mya's sharper gaze constantly checked their surroundings.
Kaelor followed with his usual relaxed posture, staff resting over his shoulder. "If this ends in another cursed ruin, I'm officially charging consulting fees."
Ethan smirked. "If there's treasure, I call first pick."
"Of course you do," Kaelor replied dryly.
Liam stayed closer to the middle of the group, clearly uneasy, glancing around at every sound.
Rose walked quietly near the back. She didn't speak much, but her attention was constant watching the group, the forest, and the unseen space between.
Vile lagged slightly behind, completely focused on the glowing shard in his hand.
"You okay back there?" Lyra asked gently.
"I'm following something," Vile replied without looking up.
Alex slowed. "Following what?"
Vile raised the shard. Neon-blue lines pulsed brighter, reacting to something ahead. "There's another signal. Another fragment… or something connected to it."
Kaelor tilted his head. "So we're being led straight into something dangerous. How comforting."
A branch snapped somewhere in the mist.
Everyone stopped.
The forest went silent in a way that felt unnatural.
Kira's hand moved slightly toward her weapon. "Something's here."
Ethan shifted his weight back. "Please don't be another trap. I've had enough traps."
Rose spoke softly. "It's not random."
Vile exhaled. "No… it's guiding us."
They moved forward carefully until the forest opened into a clearing.
At its center stood a ruin half-swallowed stone, ancient carvings worn down by time.
The shard in Vile's hand flared violently.
"This is it," he said.
Alex raised a hand. "Wait. We don't know what's inside."
"Or what's waiting," Mya added.
Ethan stepped forward slightly. "Standing here isn't going to make it less dangerous."
Kaelor sighed. "He's going in anyway. I can feel it."
Vile didn't hesitate. He walked inside.
Kira watched him go. "Let him. This is what he does."
Inside, the ruin was colder than the forest. Symbols lined the walls, faintly glowing as Vile passed, the shard pulling him deeper.
He stopped at a central chamber.
There another fragment. Larger. More complete.
He reached for it.
The moment his fingers touched it—
The ruin reacted.
Outside, the ground shook violently.
Lyra stumbled slightly. "What was that?!"
Rose turned sharply toward the entrance. "It activated something."
Stone exploded upward.
Mechanical constructs spider-like machines with glowing blue cores erupted from hidden pits in the ground.
"Okay, that's new," Kaelor said, gripping his staff properly now.
Alex stepped forward instantly. "Formation!"
Kira moved to the entrance.
Mya stood beside Lyra. "Stay behind me."
"I wasn't planning on dying today," Lyra muttered.
Ethan glanced at the machines. "I also wasn't planning on fighting metal spiders."
Liam froze. "I wasn't planning on anything!"
Rose stepped slightly in front of Liam without hesitation. "Stay behind me. Don't panic."
Inside, Vile turned as the chamber began sealing.
Old gears locked into place.
"They're reacting to the fragment…" he muttered. "Not me."
Outside, chaos erupted.
Alex shouted over the noise. "Hold them back!"
Kaelor raised his staff. "Finally something fun!"
Ethan rushed forward, more opportunistic than brave, targeting weak points in the constructs as they moved.
Lyra supported Kira, tracking movement patterns. "They're coordinated!"
Mya clicked her tongue. "I can see that."
Liam flinched as a construct lunged then Rose pulled him back smoothly, deflecting the strike with calm precision.
"Stay close," she said.
Liam nodded quickly, shaken.
Inside, Vile gripped the fragment tighter.
"I understand now…" he whispered. "This isn't just a vault."
The ruin shuddered again.
And the real fight began.
