Chapter 34 - The Chains Stir

The battlefield was no longer silent.

Chains rattled beneath the earth, scraping against stone like something alive.

The sound echoed through the valley.

Clink... Drag...

Clink... Drag...

Ethan stood near the edge of the crater, his blade drawn.

His eyes remained fixed on the darkness below.

"Whatever's down there..."

He tightened his grip.

"...it doesn't want us leaving."

Mya stepped forward, her hand already on her weapon.

"Then we'll make it regret stopping us."

Alex raised one hand.

"Wait."

Mya glanced at him.

"What?"

"We don't know what we're dealing with."

She clicked her tongue.

"Of course."

Alex looked toward the pit.

"Nobody charges in."

A shadow slowly emerged from the darkness.

Chains dragged behind it.

The figure climbed onto the edge of the crater, its body tall and unnaturally thin. Pieces of ancient armor covered parts of its body, while dark chains wrapped around its arms, chest, and legs.

Two pale lights burned beneath its hood.

Liam's grip tightened around his weapon.

"T-That thing..."

He swallowed.

"...is looking at us."

Vile adjusted his glasses.

"More importantly..."

He stared at the chains.

"Those aren't ordinary chains."

Kira narrowed her eyes.

"They're moving before the creature does."

The chains suddenly twitched.

Alex's expression hardened.

"Everyone

CRACK!

A chain shot toward them.

Ethan moved first.

He swung his blade.

CLANG!

The impact sent sparks flying.

Ethan was thrown backward several meters.

He dug his boots into the dirt and stopped himself.

"Whoa!"

He looked at his blade.

A small crack had appeared along its edge.

"Okay..."

He stared at the chain.

"...Definitely not normal."

Vile crouched and placed a hand against the ground.

"The energy is flowing through the entire battlefield."

Alex glanced at him.

"Can you figure out what it's doing?"

"I'm trying."

Another chain ripped from the ground.

"Move!"

Everyone scattered.

Mya leapt over the chain and landed beside Ethan.

"You're welcome."

Ethan blinked.

"For what?"

"I just saved you."

"I blocked the last one."

"I distracted it."

"You screamed at it."

"It worked!"

Ethan grinned.

"Sure it did."

"Keep talking and I'll let it hit you next time."

Kira moved between them.

"Focus."

Another chain struck.

Kira twisted aside, letting it pass inches from her.

Her movements were precise and controlled.

"There's a pattern."

Vile looked at her.

"What?"

"The attacks."

She pointed toward the chains.

"They aren't random."

Vile's eyes widened.

"You're right."

He quickly began tracking their movements.

"They're forcing us into specific positions."

Alex looked around.

The group had been pushed farther apart.

"Then don't let them separate us."

Lyra moved toward Liam.

"Liam, stay with me."

He nodded nervously.

"I-I will."

A chain suddenly came from behind them.

Liam noticed it first.

"Lyra!"

He pushed her aside.

The chain struck his sword.

CRACK!

His weapon broke.

Liam hit the ground hard.

"Liam!"

Lyra rushed toward him.

"I'm okay..."

He winced as he stood.

"I just... didn't want it to hit you."

Lyra placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Thank you."

Liam's face turned red.

"I-I mean... anyone would've done it."

Mya glanced over.

"Sure."

Liam looked away.

"Don't."

The chained figure finally moved.

Its head slowly turned toward Ethan.

The pale lights beneath its hood brightened.

Ethan froze.

Again.

That feeling.

The same strange pull he'd felt beneath the battlefield.

Only now it was stronger.

The creature raised one hand.

The chains surrounding it stopped moving.

Every single one pointed toward Ethan.

Vile noticed.

"...Ethan."

Ethan didn't respond.

Alex stepped closer.

"Ethan?"

He finally looked back.

"I don't know what's happening."

His eyes returned to the creature.

"But it's reacting to me."

The creature tilted its head.

Then it spoke.

Its voice was low and ancient.

"One who carries the hunger of the world..."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

The creature's chains rattled.

You have come."

The others exchanged confused glances.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Come for what?"

The creature didn't answer.

Instead, the ground beneath Ethan's feet began glowing.

Ancient markings appeared beneath the dirt.

Vile's eyes widened.

"Everyone move!"

The battlefield erupted.

Chains burst from the ground in every direction.

Alex raised his sword.

"Stay together!"

Kira moved beside him.

Mya planted her feet.

Lyra protected Liam.

Kaelor raised his staff.

Rose watched the markings spreading beneath them.

And Ethan...

Ethan stood at the center.

The glow beneath him intensified.

For one brief moment, he saw something buried deep beneath the battlefield.

Not clearly.

Not enough to understand.

Just the outline of something resting in darkness.

Something surrounded by countless chains.

His eyes widened.

"What..."

The vision vanished.

The chained guardian raised its arm.

Every chain in the battlefield pulled tight.

Then

BOOM!

The earth split apart.

The group was thrown backward as the ancient battlefield began to collapse around them.

Alex caught himself against a broken stone pillar.

"Everyone!"

He looked toward Ethan.

"Ethan!"

But Ethan was already falling into the darkness.

"Ethan!"

His hand reached toward the others.

The last thing he saw before the darkness swallowed him was the chained guardian standing above the collapsing pit.

And behind it...

Something ancient began to awaken.
