Chapter 864 - 863-Change Of Dynamics

The office was quiet, the afternoon light casting long, golden rectangles across the polished wooden floor. Dust motes danced in the beams, undisturbed by the stillness that had settled over the room. Renjiro stood in the doorway, his hand still on the handle, his gaze fixed on the figure who had been waiting for him.

Uchiha Fugaku stood near the window, his hands clasped behind his back, his posture rigid and formal. His dark eyes, still carrying the weight of now years of leadership, were fixed on the village below, but his attention was clearly on the young man who had just entered. He did not turn immediately, did not offer any of the formal greetings that custom demanded. He simply stood, waiting, his presence filling the room like a shadow that had been cast by the setting sun.

Renjiro's internal reaction was immediate, sharp.

Fugaku. Here. Waiting for me. This is not a social call.

The last serious conversation they had shared had ended with Renjiro leaving the Uchiha clan—a decision that had severed ties that had taken years to build. Back then, Fugaku had been the unquestioned authority between them, the clan head whose word carried the weight of generations. Now, things were different. Renjiro was Jonin Commander, close confidant of the Hokage, war hero, and arguably held influence equal to or greater than Fugaku's clan-head authority.

Neither of us quite knows how to approach the other anymore.

He stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click. The sound seemed to break the spell of stillness, and Fugaku turned to face him.

"Fugaku-sama," Renjiro said, his voice carefully neutral. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Fugaku's response was equally formal, his voice flat and controlled.

"Jonin Commander Uzumaki, I apologise for the intrusion. I came to request your assistance."

Renjiro blinked, genuinely surprised. The last time Fugaku had requested his assistance, it had been for a clan matter, a political manoeuvring that had ended in conflict. This was different. There was something in Fugaku's voice; a weight, a burden, that had not been there before.

"Assistance with what?"

Fugaku's eyes met his, and for a moment, the mask of formal composure slipped. There was something raw beneath it, something that looked almost like exhaustion.

"The clan cemetery has been robbed."

Renjiro's expression did not change, but his internal thoughts sharpened.

Grave robbery? That's unusual. Most grave robbers are after valuables, not—

"Grave robbery?" he asked, his voice carefully neutral.

Fugaku shook his head slowly.

"Not valuables," he said, his voice heavy. "Bodies."

The word hung in the air, cold and final.

Renjiro's internal alarm bells began to ring. There were very few reasons someone would steal Uchiha corpses, and every reason was terrible.

"Tell me everything," he said, moving to his desk and gesturing for Fugaku to sit. The clan head hesitated for a moment, then settled into the chair across from him.

"Several graves have been disturbed," Fugaku began, his voice low, controlled. "Some coffins were opened. Corpses are missing entirely. Others remain but were desecrated."

He paused, his jaw tightening.

"Some of the stolen corpses belonged to shinobi who died during the war. Recent casualties. Fresh enough that their eyes had not completely deteriorated."

Renjiro's eyes narrowed.

"When the recovered remains were examined…"

"Eye sockets were empty."

The words landed like stones in still water. Renjiro's expression remained calm, but internally, his mind was racing.

Danzo. Orochimaru. Black market collectors. Foreign villages.

Every possibility runs through my head.

Someone is harvesting Sharingan.

He forced himself to remain calm, to think like a commander rather than a soldier.

"When did it start?" he asked, his voice steady. "How many graves? Any witnesses? Any traces? Any patrol reports?"

Fugaku's answers were clipped, precise.

"It began approximately three weeks ago. Fifteen graves have been disturbed. No witnesses. No evidence. No tracks. No suspicious chakra signatures."

He paused.

"Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing."

Renjiro leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled before him.

"Why aren't you in the Hokage's office right now?"

Fugaku hesitated. The pause was brief, barely perceptible, but Renjiro caught it.

"I have suspicions," Fugaku said, his voice careful, measured. "But no proof. No evidence means no formal accusation. If I raise the issue publicly without proof, it becomes clan paranoia. It damages the clan politically. It could create conflict between the Uchiha and village leadership."

He met Renjiro's gaze.

"That is why I came to you."

Renjiro stared at him, the weight of the words settling into his consciousness. This was, perhaps, the first time Fugaku had ever asked him for help as an equal. The clan head had swallowed his pride, set aside his grievances, and come to the man who had left his clan.

"Regardless of what happened between us," Fugaku continued, his voice quieter now, "regardless of the decisions you made… you are still one of ours."

He paused.

"Please help me protect the clan."

The word please carried enormous weight, coming from Fugaku. It was not a word he used lightly, not a word he offered to anyone who had not earned it. Renjiro felt the weight of it, the acknowledgment of a relationship that had been strained but not broken.

Renjiro was silent for a long moment, his mind turning over the request, the implications, the consequences.

He remembers leaving the clan. Arguments with Fugaku. Feeling trapped by clan politics.

His anger toward Fugaku has long cooled. This is bigger than old grievances.

He met Fugaku's gaze.

"I cannot promise results," he said, his voice firm. "I cannot promise answers. But I will look into it."

He paused.

"I will also raise the issue discreetly with the Hokage."

Fugaku's shoulders relaxed—not much, but enough for Renjiro to notice. The tension that had been coiled in his frame eased, just slightly, and something like relief flickered in his dark eyes.

"Thank you," Fugaku said, the words simple, sincere. More sincere than anything they had exchanged in years.

He rose from his seat, bowed slightly, and walked toward the door. He paused at the threshold, his hand on the handle, and glanced back.

"Renjiro."

"Yes?"

"I know we have not seen eye to eye. I know you have reasons to distrust me. But I am grateful that you are willing to help."

He did not wait for a response. He simply opened the door and walked out, leaving Renjiro alone in the quiet office.

The door closed with a soft click, and Renjiro sat in the silence, his expression slowly hardening. His mind was already racing through the implications, the suspects, the next steps.

Uchiha corpses. Missing Sharingan. No witnesses. No evidence.

The list of suspects forms naturally: Danzo. Orochimaru. Foreign infiltrators. Unknown parties.

He thought of Danzo's collection of Sharingan—the eyes he had harvested from the Uchiha massacre, the ones he had used to create his arm. He thought of Orochimaru's experiments, his endless pursuit of power, his willingness to destroy lives in his quest for immortality. He thought of the black market, the foreign villages, the unknown actors who would pay any price for a piece of Uchiha power.

Someone is building a collection.
