The Hokage Tower materialized around Minato as his Hiraishin deposited him at the designated receiving point; the transition was instantaneous, but his senses were already extending outward, reading the village's chakra signature. Something was wrong.
The village barrier was under sustained pressure, its protective field flickering with the strain of repeated impacts. He could feel the disturbance radiating from the outer perimeter, a rhythmic thrum of mechanical assault that was utterly unlike the chaotic surges of a shinobi attack.
He moved immediately, his body flickering through the streets of Konoha, past startled civilians and running shinobi. The outer defensive line was visible as he crested the last rise; hundreds of strange, blank mechanized puppets were advancing toward the barrier in coordinated waves.
They moved with mechanical precision, their movements synchronised, their purpose singular. No visible chakra signatures emanated from individual operators; no fear or hesitation marked their advance. They simply pressed forward, their objective appearing to be overwhelming the barrier rather than immediately killing civilians.
Minato's first thought was cold and sharp; someone attacked the village while he was away. The timing was too precise, too deliberate. The enemy had waited for him to leave, had probed the defenses, and had launched their assault exactly when Konoha's leadership was divided.
Hiruzen was already present at the perimeter, directing the village's response. He had transformed from the calm, grandfatherly former Hokage into the battlefield commander Konoha remembered from the war; his voice was sharp, his commands precise, his presence a steady anchor in the chaos. Barrier Division shinobi were reinforcing damaged sections, their seals flaring with concentrated chakra. ANBU squads were moving through the defensive line, intercepting puppets that attempted to breach the perimeter.
Minato materialised beside him, his blue eyes scanning the battlefield, his hand already forming the seals for a Rasengan.
"What do we have?" he asked, his voice carrying the weight of his authority.
Hiruzen's response was immediate, his aged eyes fixed on the advancing puppets.
"The attack began a few minutes ago," he said. "The barrier detected an abnormal intrusion. The puppets appeared shortly afterwards. They have repeatedly attempted to probe weaknesses in the barrier."
Minato asked whether any enemy shinobi had been detected. Hiruzen answered with a single word: "None."
The puppets suddenly accelerated. Hundreds rushed the barrier simultaneously, their movements coordinated, their purpose singular. Some carried blades and mechanical weapons, their limbs transforming into instruments of destruction. Others sacrificed themselves against barrier points, detonating on impact to create localised instability. Several began climbing over one another, forming living ramps to reach the barrier's upper sections.
ANBU intercepted them, their blades flashing, their techniques precise. The battle erupted across the outer perimeter; explosions echoed through the defensive line, and the air filled with the screech of metal and the crackle of chakra.
Hiruzen's orders were sharp and absolute: "No pursuit beyond the defensive line. No one abandons their assigned sector. Civilian districts remain the priority."
Minato moved directly into the densest concentration of puppets, his speed becoming the defining feature of the battlefield. He used Rasengan rather than massive destructive techniques; each sphere of spinning chakra destroyed a puppet cleanly, its mechanical form collapsing into inert pieces. He combined this with short-range Hiraishin, appearing beside one puppet, Rasengan, disappearing, reappearing several metres away, destroying another. His fighting style was extremely economical; rather than simply annihilating the entire battlefield, he deliberately kept the fighting away from the village.
Barrier personnel began taking advantage of his movements to repair damaged sections, their seals flaring as they reinforced the weakened points. The puppets could not keep up with his speed, their mechanical responses too slow to match the Yellow Flash's relentless assault.
Hiruzen recognised that Minato was containing the mobile threat while the barrier division handled the defensive structure. He stepped forward and began using large-scale elemental combinations; Earth Release reshaped the terrain, raising walls, creating trenches, and funnelling the puppets into kill zones. Fire Release followed, and Hiruzen combined the two to create enormous waves of fire sweeping through the concentrated puppet formations. Entire groups of mechanical bodies were reduced to smoking wreckage, their metal forms melting under the intense heat.
The display reminded everyone why Hiruzen remained one of Konoha's most dangerous shinobi even in his older age. His battlefield efficiency was legendary; he created the terrain, and Minato exploited it. The two effectively turned the perimeter into a controlled slaughter zone.
ANBU squads eliminated puppets attempting to bypass Minato and Hiruzen, their movements fluid, their attacks precise. Barrier shinobi stabilised the damaged sections, their seals glowing as they reinforced the defensive lines. Medical personnel remained behind the defensive line, their supplies ready, their faces grim. Konoha civilians were kept completely unaware of the full scale of the assault if possible; the battle was contained, its violence hidden from the village's eyes.
Several barrier operators reported something disturbing; the attackers weren't trying to break through at one specific location. They were testing multiple points simultaneously. Minato immediately recognised the tactical implication; the enemy was collecting information. The assault may have had another purpose besides destruction.
Minato began analysing the battlefield. The puppets were individually weak compared to Konoha's elite shinobi, yet the attack was coordinated enough to occupy a huge portion of Konoha's defensive forces. He thought about the timing; he had been summoned back to Konoha, Renjiro remained in Lightning Country, the delegation was subsequently attacked, and now Konoha was being pressured by an entirely different force.
He realised something deeply uncomfortable; someone may have deliberately engineered the separation of Konoha's leadership. He didn't yet know whether the attacks were connected, but the possibility became impossible to ignore.
The remaining puppets launched one final coordinated assault. Several heavily reinforced units attempted to physically breach the barrier, their mechanical bodies slamming against the protective field with devastating force. Hiruzen ordered the barrier division to hold, his voice cutting through the chaos. Minato flashed between multiple breach points, his Rasengan destroying the lead units before they could penetrate the barrier. Hiruzen unleashed another massive Earth/Fire combination, the flames sweeping through the remaining puppets. ANBU converged on the final targets, their blades flashing, their techniques precise.
Minato ultimately destroyed the central mechanical unit coordinating the final push. The remaining puppets collapsed or became inert, their mechanical forms scattering across the battlefield.
Hiruzen walked through the smoking battlefield, examining one of the destroyed puppets. His expression became increasingly thoughtful; something about the technology or construction reminded him of something. He didn't immediately reveal the answer, his silence carrying the tension.
Minato noticed and asked, "Something wrong?"
Hiruzen didn't answer immediately. He continued examining the puppet, his aged eyes tracing its mechanical structure, its design, its purpose.
Hiruzen then suddenly asked Minato whether Renjiro had contacted him. Minato said he hadn't, explaining that Renjiro was still responsible for the delegation in Kumo.
"Minato… before you leave for the border, we need to speak about Renjiro."
Brief pause.
"Specifically, what really happened during his battle with Orochimaru."
Minato became noticeably more guarded. The question was the first indication that the Orochimaru incident was something the former Hokage had become aware of, something Minato didn't want to happen, considering Hiruzen's current animosity towards his former student.
