Perrin's party spent three days learning how to travel on horseback.
They rode the Dawnhoof trails each morning. In the afternoons, they practiced using weapons without twisting out of their saddles. At night, they studied the record of their failed attempt and marked every place where one rider had forced the rest of the column to react.
Perrin stopped assuming the leader belonged at the front.
The scout chose the route. The shield bearer controlled the space around the wounded. The healer stayed where he could reach the mounts and passengers. Their mage watched above and behind the column. Perrin occupied whichever position connected the others.
On the third day, they completed a five-person trail race without winning it.
They finished fourth.
All five crossed the line together.
