Chapter 603 - Chapter 603 - The Selfless Self

The thing wandered for a very long time.

Perhaps no time, or perhaps it didn't wander at all.

Eventually, it discovered that the distinction was not always meaningful.

In this realm, the separation of ideas had less meaning than it thought they should have.

Movement implied distance, distance implied space, and space implied a place in which two locations could truly be separated. But this realm only sometimes behaved in accordance with such ideas, and so there were long stretches where it remained perfectly still while arriving somewhere else regardless.

Time behaved no better.

At some point, although it could not have said when, it remembered another concept.

Meditation.

The word arrived before its meaning did.

Then, little by little, the meaning assembled itself until it became something it understood rather than merely possessed.

It had meditated before. It wasn't clear when, but there had been a purpose to it.

It remembered more things while meditating. It brought clarity, and that seemed important, so it meditated again.

Thoughts came and parted. It did not pursue them.

Whenever fragments of memory drifted close, it observed them with detached curiosity instead of reaching for them, and strangely enough, those left undisturbed remained far longer than the ones it desperately wished to remember.

How long it remained that way could not be measured.

If someone had told it that only a heartbeat had passed, it could have believed them.

If someone had claimed that civilizations had risen, flourished, and turned to dust while it contemplated a single idea, that too would have sounded reasonable.

Eventually, duration ceased to concern it.

Meditation was not something that occupied time.

It simply was.

And through that stillness, understanding accumulated with impossible slowness until one day, if such a word retained any meaning here, it realized that it no longer struggled as much to comprehend what surrounded it—not because the realm had become simpler, but because it had patiently remembered things it had already known once.

The past struggle to understand complexity was one it had already gone through.

They were merely principles that belonged to it.

It understood that the things in this realm were both like and unlike the things it already knew.

It knew that understanding everything was frustratingly distant, perhaps forever out of reach, not meant to be known by any mind, body, soul, or anything beyond them.

But it understood now that remembering was not merely recovering something lost.

Sometimes it was rebuilding a shape from pieces that had never realized they belonged together.

Its own form reflected that understanding.

The crude appendages it had once regarded with detached curiosity had lengthened. They bent where before they had remained straight. Their ends divided once.

Something steadily approaching fingers.

The crimson lights within its dark form no longer floated aimlessly.

They settled with purpose.

It had not become a person again.

Not yet.

But it had ceased to be merely a formless thing drifting through an unknowable realm.

Piece by patient piece, thought by thought, it was remembering not who it had been, but what it had meant to be. And somehow, although it still could not have explained why, it knew with complete certainty that this, too, was part of the journey it had come here to undertake.
