"So, you're the student assistant, Anise Haylan. There are quite the few rumors going around about how you are quick with your work."
Anise covered her nose to avoid the heavy smell of alcohol.
She did it out of habit, but thinking of it, she realized it was rude to do it in front of a senior professor. Even though Anise felt bad, it seemed that Professor Kaleid didn't care at all.
Kaleid, who came into the lab looking rather drunk, glanced at the corpse-like Assistant Professor Cleoh.
At that point, that appearance of hers has become the norm. He couldn't remember the last time he hadn't seen her so exhausted like that.
Aside from the schoolwork that was pushed onto her, she also conducted her own personal research. Even if she had ten different bodies, it wouldn't have been enough.
"H-Hello, Professor Kaleid."
"There's no need to force such an expression."
"D-Did I make such a face?"
Professor Kaleid looked around the lab, scratching his ponytail.
It had already been a week since the end-of-semester exams had been concluded. After that weekend, it would be the start of the break.
"Well… it seems it's become a quiet period here in the lab. Only one of the student assistants showed up. Well, I guess it is a time where everyone is preparing for the break."
Professor Kaleid took a crumpled paper envelope from his pocket, tossing it onto the middle of the table.
"Wh-What is this?"
"It's a letter from the main office from this morning. They said the results of the exam have been calculated."
"Then, this is about the grades?'
"Yes. The list of the top twenty students of each grade is also inside."
Normally, it was a policy to not publicly announce the student's grades. However, every semester they would post the top twenty students on the wall of the student center to act as motivation.
He went there to drop off the grades so they could take care of the work. Usually, a senior professor would personally take care of the matter—but Kaleid couldn't be bothered.
"Check the list thoroughly, organize it neatly, and post it on the wall of the student center."
"Yes, I understand."
Anyway, Anise had her hands free.
As the semester came to an end, the amount of work allocated to Cleoh's lab was also greatly reduced.
It was time for the long-awaited break. Assistant Professor Cleoh was lying on her desk in a deep sleep, as there wasn't anyone giving her work anymore. As such, Anise was left only doing simple tasks, such as organizing the documents that were expired in the storage.
"Hmm…"
Anise picked up the envelope Professor Kaleid had thrown on the table as she swallowed her dry saliva.
Anise boasted outstanding results in written exams due to her meticulous personality, but her practical skills still lacked a lot.
She wanted to do all she could to achieve a high score and get the scholarship, but it was impossible with her lackluster grades.
However, this time she wanted to have a glimmer of hope, but…
"Ah, that's right. Your name wasn't on the list, Anise."
Anise, who was opening the envelope with her heart pounding, was hit with a death sentence.
As Anise glared at Kaleid, he shrugged as he smoked some tobacco.
"What's with you? If you saw it with your own two eyes, it was only going to hurt more."
"Eeeghk… Ugh…"
Anise shook her head as she took a deep breath. Honestly, she wasn't expecting all that much.
Since that was the case, the thing she was most curious about was Ed Rothstaylor's grades.
Ed Rothstaylor had recently jumped up in standing thanks to his performance in the practical exams. That was because he was no longer just known as someone that worked hard, but also as someone that had actually achieved something.
He was considered the only student that could potentially defeat the current undisputed third year top student and take the seat himself.
Other grades might not be all that interested in it, but among the third years, it was a big deal… Anise herself was also quite curious.
And one of the best things about being a student assistant was that you had access to that type of information first.
"Whew…"
It wasn't even her grades, but Anise was starting to get nervous again.
In the first place, Anise was someone that favored both Yennekar and Ed.
However, since only one of them would be able to be the top student, she suddenly felt a heartbreaking sadness hit her heart.
Still, the scales inside her leaned towards Ed.
Yennekar was kind, sincere, and one of her closest friends—one that she shared a deep connection with. It was a very precious relationship, but Anise saw a bit of herself in Ed, who always put in the utmost effort.
Anise was self-aware of that fact. That it was a kind of self-identification.
He was a man that had survived, clenching his teeth, without any background or talent to support him. His life could never be considered easy. It seemed that she saw herself in that life of his.
Anise knew the value that came in a life that endured like that. And that effort needed to be rewarded.
However, that didn't mean that Yennekar didn't put in any effort herself, nor did it mean she didn't struggle or have a hard life.
Still, the amount of effort Ed put in was completely different.
"Where…"
Anise took a deep breath as she opened the envelope that Professor Kaleid gave her.
There were a bunch of papers inside. Looking at the top of the front page, Anise's face instantly lit up.
But looking over the details for a brief moment… Anise's gaze started to cool down, little by little.

[Look at these wings, Young Master Ed! When I spread them out like this… I can even cover your entire body! Kahahaha. Kahahahahahah! Khahahahahahahahahhahaha!]
Mugg laughed loudly before starting to cough, as if he were choking.
It was just last week that Mugg had raised his status and become a mid-ranking spirit. It really had only been a week.
[If you keep making a fuss like that, Young Master Ed may start to feel burdened by the magic power.]
[Y-You're right…! I will refrain from burning my flames any longer. I just got a little too excited, but I'll stop right away! Thank you for reminding me, Lacia…]
[Why are you talking to me so respectfully? Aren't we both mid-ranking spirits now?]
[P-Pardon?]
On one side of the bench at sunset, before returning back to the camp after finishing my schoolwork, I sat on a bench eating a light meal.
The closing ceremony where all the classes for the semester were concluded had occurred that day. There were no more classes, which meant I wouldn't have to go to the education district for a while.
So, I wanted to finish all the work I needed to do in the education district that day.
The camp I lived in was in the North Forest, which was a bit far from the education district. So, I didn't want to have to keep going back and forth all that distance just to take care of a few trivial things.
[H-How could I ever…! N-No. Th-That's right! Now that I'm a mid-ranking spirit, I have an equal standing to you, Lacia…!]
[That's right.]
[S-Still, talking to you informally right away is too much… My heart isn't ready… So… Can I take it slowly…?]
[...]
Mugg sat on the back of the bench as he flapped his wings around. Lacia was lying on the marble floor, licking the pads of her paws. As I watched the two of them arguing with each other, I had a strange feeling inside of me as I remember the way I had a similar war of nerves against Bell Maya
[You're fussing over something that's not even a big deal. And Ed's magic power isn't how it used to be. He can easily handle two mid-ranking spirits now, so don't be so distressed.]
Meanwhile , Merilda snorted as she flipped through a thick book on the opposite side of the bench. She seemed strangely bothered.
"I can handle two mid-ranking spirits, but it is a bit of a burden. On that note, you are always next to me rather than Lucy."
As I said that, Merilda, who was in her human form, narrowed her eyes as she shook her head.
[She has a lot of magic power, but she rarely ever visits the education district. I want to go to the library as often as I can, but if I followed her, I would need to walk in this uncomfortable body every day just to borrow books. The same is true for when I return them as well.]
"Have you already read all ten of the books you borrowed last week?"
[Art History has a lot of pictures. So, even though it's thick, there's not much text.]
After saying that, she hummed to herself while flipping the pages of the book. I was debating on whether I should say anything else to her, but I decided to stay quiet and leave her alone.
[The sky has become quite red. It seems that the sun is slowly setting, Young Master Ed. Isn't it time to go and take care of the leftover work?]
Lacia asked me politely.
"Yeah. I'll clean up my food and quickly get to work. I have to go to Trix Hall and apply for a school scholarship for next semester. Professor Flubin said I could also take the leftover textbooks if I needed them, so I'll also have to stop by the lab."
[You are quite busy.]
"There's also a lot I need to do when I go back. For now… I managed to do well on the exams, so it's about time for me to get ready to go back home. I have to arrange the carriage and confirm those that will accompany me."
I was sure that the break would be a major turning point in my life.
So, the more thorough I was with preparing, the better things would be.
[When are you planning to meet with Lady Yennekar? Weren't you planning on going together?]
"I told her we could meet at the student center after I take care of my work."
I put away my food as I spoke.
"The grades for the semester must have come out."
As I let out a deep sigh, only then did I realize.
Even though I acted like it wasn't a big deal, I was somewhat nervous.

Student Center
Sunset
Nail Hall stood majestically against the red sky. All the students were gathered around.
The list of the top twenty students that was announced by the school was able to be seen at a glance.
The moment I arrived at the student center, holding all sorts of papers and books, the eyes of all the students were already turned towards me.
The moment I heard them whispering to each other, I already had an idea of what it said.
Due to the structure of Silvenia's grading, the top student rarely changed.
And the moment I saw my name as the top student for the third years, I slowly closed my eyes.
"H-He really took the seat as the third year's top student…!"
"Honestly though, it makes sense. He worked so hard…"
"Do you think they would just give that seat to anyone who lives a hard life?"
"—–"
"—–"
With my eyes closed, I slowly found inner peace. The murmuring noises around me started to fade, little by little.
The memories I spent living in a ridiculously difficult environment, and the past years I spent enduring hardship, were playing behind my black eyelids.
The days I spent with everyone looking at me with disgust wherever I walked. The days where I had to endure it all through will and effort, because my body was wretched and I lacked any talents, were over.
After overcoming all of those hardships, I had finally risen to the top of my grade.
It took a year and seven months. During that time, I hardly ever had a proper sleep.
Some might say that I achieved incredible results in a short amount of time. Others might say that it was ridiculous that I was able to endure it all for such a long period of time.
Long or short, none of it mattered. In the end, I persevered and made it. Now, I proudly sat as the student that achieved top grades among the third years.
My chest felt tight. I was determined to silently accept whatever the results were, but seeing my hard work come to fruition, it seemed that a wave of emotions was washing over me.
It couldn't be helped. I was only human. It was inevitable that my emotions would overflow.
I was barely able to open my eyes again as I grabbed my things, checking what was written on the wall once more. No matter how many times I looked at it, the name of the top student in the third year was Ed Rothstaylor.
"Whew…"
I took a deep breath.
After arriving in that world, had I ever experienced such a deep and immense sense of satisfaction? Perhaps the only time was when I first completed my cabin.
I read the details of the announcement with a heart weighed down with emotions.
The specific grades of each top student was written under their names. The grade difference between Yennekar and I was surprisingly large.
My grades were tallied together without any mistakes. But the moment I looked at Yennekar's… I felt a strange sense of discomfort.
In that moment, I started to frown.
"Ed…! You're the top student…!"
At that moment, Yennekar made her way through the students. The eyes of everyone turned to us in an instant. Recently, it felt like I was getting a lot of attention.
"Uaaaaah~ I ended up in second~ I guess, in the end, it was you who won Ed…!"
Yennekar's expression, as she came skipping towards me, was rather relieved.
"Yennekar."
"Uh, hm?"
"I have something to tell you. Let's go to a place where there's no one listening in."
I grabbed her arm as I walked out of the crowd. Murmurs followed but I didn't want to worry about all of that at the moment.
"Ed? Hm? Ed?"
A while after leaving the crowd, I let go of her arm.
Yennekar's fingers were fiddling as if she were nervous.
"E-Ed? What's wrong?"
"Did you intentionally do badly on the written exam?"
There was no reason to beat around the bush. I asked her bluntly.
After looking through the grades, I had a strong feeling that something was wrong.
Yennekar's specialties were Spiritual Studies and Monster Ecology. Her written scores were strangely low in those classes.
It was difficult to control your scores on a practical test, since they looked at your resonance level. However, in a written test you could 'control' your score. It was especially easier in a subject that you knew well.
"Did you… give up the position of top student for me?"
When I asked that question, Yennekar's shoulders dropped. After all, she was a girl that couldn't lie.
"…Was it obvious…?"
"Why did you do that?"
"Either way… Because of the disciplinary action I received last time, I couldn't even get a scholarship if I was the top student. And I'm still not allowed to return back to Ophelis Hall…"
Yennekar continued to fiddle with her fingers as she spoke shyly.
"Even though you were also kicked out of Ophelis Hall, you could at least receive the scholarship…"
"Didn't you say that you would do your best while thinking of all the support you got from the people back home?"
"Well, the second seat is also an achievement. And… the expectations they have for me are heavy… As I lay in the camp and thought about it, I decided that I should step down from the first-place seat."
Yennekar spoke shyly. She then smiled as she continued.
"And it wasn't like you cheated your way to the top seat, Ed. Either way, I always thought that it would be better if you were the one that was the top student of the third years."
I took a deep breath at those words.
I thought that I was able to get the title as a result of my efforts alone. That was also the reason why I felt so overwhelmed with bliss.
However, the truth was that Yennekar had given up.
Looking at the grades, if Yennekar did her written exams properly, I might now have even stood a chance.
That was why the difference in our grades was so much larger than I thought. In reality, there was no way of knowing what actually would have happened.
But that was all a thing of the past.
My desire to be the top student was a testament to my hard work. But ultimately, it was the benefits to being the top student that were important.
And now I had them. It was all thanks to Yennekar being considerate. That was how things ended up.
"Alright. Thanks."
I softly responded to her.
My expression and tone of voice was the same as always. Without any change, I sincerely thanked her as I always did. In times like this, I was the one that needed to act mature.
"It was all thanks to you, Yennekar. Even if you weren't able to get any benefits, it still couldn't have been an easy decision to let go of the position as top student… And there are going to be all those people that look at you…"
"N-No…! It was you that did all the hard work, Ed…!"
"Either way, thanks. I won't forget what you've done for me."
After saying that, Yennekar's expression wasn't all that pleasant.
I tilted my head as if I felt something strange about her.
"E-Ed…?"
Then, at the moment Yennekar—who was contemplating for a while—was about to ask something…
Sasasak.
"This is where the two of you were."
A poignant yet gentle voice. One I heard often in Cleoh's lab.
Anise came out from the back of the benches, brushing her hair back. It looked as if she had been searching for us for a while.
"A-Anise…? Wh-What are you doing here…?"
"We promised to go to Laplace Bakery today. You, me, and Clara. To celebrate the closing ceremony. I can't believe you always forget these things, Yennekar."
"Today? D-Did we?"
Anise walked past me as she grabbed Yennekar's arm tightly. But while doing so, she didn't forget to greet me.
"Hello, Ed."
"Did you finish all your work in the lab…?"
"Yeah. I'm sorry, but I'll be borrowing her. She had a prior appointment, but she must have forgotten."
Yennekar tilted her head as Anise pulled her away.
Yennekar murmured that she didn't remember making such a promise, no matter how much she thought about it. Anise just told her to think harder as she dragged her away, as if she was somewhat abducting her.
"Ah, that's right."
However, before disappearing with Yennekar, she turned her head back behind the setting sun and spoke.
"Congratulations on becoming the top student."
"Thanks."
And like that… Anise took Yennekar away, disappearing in a flash.
"..."
The sun was setting in the western sky. Before, it was early evening, but now it felt as if it were really going to become night.
I sat down on a nearby bench, placed my arms on the backrest, and looked up at the sky.
Afterwards, I needed to go back to the camp and look over the list of things I needed to do.
Thinking about the fact that summer break was going to start, I realized that there was a lot of work left for me to do.
Suddenly, an inexplicable sigh was let out.
The red sky looked rather beautiful.
* * *
"Why did you do that?'
"…H-Hm?"
"Yennekar, you made a mistake."
Anise walked along, holding onto her arm tightly. Her arms was sore because of Anise's tight grip, but Yennekar couldn't bring up the pain at that moment.
Anise continued to drag her along for some time… After getting far away from Ed, she sat Yennekar down on a flower bed.
Anise lowered her head as she stopped for a moment.
She hadn't known Ed Rothstaylor for all that long, but she was aware that at some point, she started to relate to him. Self-objectification was her main specialty.
That was why she thought that his hard work and efforts needed to be properly rewarded.
And looking at the results, even if Yennekar hadn't given up, there was still a chance that he could have still been the top student. However, now things were left as an unknown possibility.
After finding out about that, Anise let out a sigh.
"Honestly, it's not that serious. It's not like you had ill intentions after all, Yennekar. You probably just wanted Ed to do well because you like him."
"S-Saying it like that makes me feel… a bit…"
"But Yennekar. Don't you remember the days you spent working hard to become the top student?"
Anise pressed on Yennekar's red forehead as she stopped speaking.
She continued to press on her head, making eye contact.
Eventually, Yennekar started to think of things from Ed's position.
The days where he worked hard without wasting any time, even giving up on his sleep.
The moment he found out that all his hard work resulted in becoming the top student… Only to find out that the result was nothing more than a 'concession'. Those feelings Ed had.
Good intentions didn't always necessarily mean good results.
However, Ed responded to Yennekar's mistake with a mature thank you.
After thinking things through, Yennekar suddenly swallowed her breath.
"..."
"Yeah, Yennekar. You should know by now."
In a corner of the school at sunset, Anise sat next to the flower bed Yennekar was sitting in.
"When you are in a higher position, just because you act nice doesn't mean it's good."
Summer nights came early.
Now that it was summer, the darkness was also deeper than usual.
Sitting on the flower bed, watching the setting sun… Yennekar lowered her head.
Anise didn't say anything useless as she quietly sat next to her.
"..."
"..."
And like that, the end-of-semester exams came to an end.
The top third year student, Ed Rothstaylor.
Because the weight of that name felt heavier than usual…
The two girls sat side by side, looking up at the setting sun.
-x-X-x-
"Rothstaylor Mansion… It's been five years, Emperor."
The dispute over the succession of the emperor's throne, which burned like a flame, seemed to take shape to some extent as the years passed.
One day, Prince Lindon suddenly gave up his right to the throne. And thus, a war of nerves was born that continued for a long time.
The three princesses of Emperor Kroel fought amongst each other to some extent in a power struggle… but now, that too was becoming a thing of the past.
The third princess—Penia, who received the most support—was off at Acken Island, which was in the southernmost corner of the continent. The second princess—Persica—was also buried away in the Imperial Library.
Was she being cautious of the disloyal servants around her, who approached her with only a lust for power? Or was she holding her breath in preparation for a full-fledged battle?
The reason was unknown, but at the very least, it was good news for the first princess, Selah.
"If it's an order, I should go. As House Rothstaylor is a prestigious family that contributes greatly to the Imperial Family, it is necessary to personally introduce myself to them."
She was a girl that had an unknown chill around her, much like the calm winter air.
She was neither arrogant nor disruptive. The only thing around her was a delicate elegance, like a piece of ice.
Even her hair had a blue-ish glow, like a snowflake covered with thin ice.
In the center of the audience chamber, which was massive compared to the size of the girl, the ruler of the Kroel empire that was also known as a legendary warrior, Kroel, was seated on his throne.
An old-fashioned silk carpet stretched out from his throne, all the way to Selah's feet.
The imperial guards stood solemnly with their spears erect, not moving one bit. Numerous aides that gathered to give advice to the emperor were also bowing their heads.
"I will make the preparations and leave on time. But…"
Emperor Kroel had ordered First Princess Selah to visit the Rothstaylor Mansion.
It seemed as if he had already spoken with his closest confidant, Krepin Rothstaylor, about it already.
"It is a shame that I won't be able to see Penia because the timing doesn't match."
Selah, the Princess of Frost, spoke as she bowed her head.
There was a strange silence among the closest aides that sat on both sides of Emperor Kroel. That was because her words held many meanings.
It had been well over a year since the Benevolent Princess Penia Elias Kroel had left the imperial household to study.
No matter how much support she received, being away from the house meant that her power was weak.
However, since Princess Penia was returning for the break, if the forces supporting Penia used that time as an opportunity to gather and nurture their loyalty, things wouldn't be great for Selah.
Selah wanted to stay in the imperial palace to watch over the situation. So, it wasn't great that she was being sent to the Rothstaylor Mansion, which was far away, while Princess Penia returned.
Penia said that she didn't desire power, but Selah didn't believe her.
That was why hearing Emperor Kroel's orders to leave the imperial household while Penia returned home wasn't very pleasing. Of course, Selah didn't have the right to refuse.
"I understand your desire to see Penia after such a long time, but going to House Rothstaylor is a much bigger opportunity for you."
Was it possible that he was forcibly separating her from Princess Penia? Selah held such thoughts, but Emperor Kroel would never say such a thing out loud.
"Selah, you must also know the importance of the social gathering held at the Rothstaylor Mansion."
Selah nodded her head.
The head of House Rothstaylor, Krepin Rothstaylor, didn't enjoy such social gatherings.
However, as he was labeled the most powerful man on the continent, it was necessary for him to get along well with many nobles.
That was why, when the rare social gathering was held, it was rather lavish.
It was a golden opportunity for the smaller aristocrats on the outskirts. It was a rare event, one where all sorts of people from powerful and noble families gathered in one place.
Originally, the imperial family had a custom where they would send one of the closest aides in their place. However, that year they were going to raise the status of the one they sent, and instead send the first princess.
There had long been a deep exchange between the Kroel and Rothstaylor families. So, that was a way to show their connection.
The impending social gathering was rather an opportunity.
In order to become the emperor, one would need to thoroughly learn how to handle House Rothstaylor to properly use them. Thus, it was necessary to have a deeper understanding of them and interact with the members of the family.
But it wouldn't end there.
The massive social gathering was held over a period of five days to easily accommodate the busy schedules of all the participants.
Looking at the list of names invited, there were plenty of major individuals that moved the empire. Every major person she could think of was on that list.
Margrave Zahul, who alone managed the largest granary in the southernmost part of the empire.
The investor Roland, who was responsible for the practical money flow of the Elte Company.
Evian Nortondale, who was head of House Nortondale, which was one of the most prestigious swordsman households.
Valvern, who was known as an incredible innovator and considered a 'father' to all the alchemists in Krett, the land of alchemy.
Saint Clarice, who was praised as a noble messenger of God, standing at the top of the Telos Religious Group.
Sinir Bloomriver, who was the head of House Bloomriver, famous for its magic and known as the 'witch's house'.
Commander Magnus Callamore, who was famous for commanding the northern frontier's troops and killing the largest number of non-humans.
And then there was the first princess of the Kroel Empire, Selah, who had emerged as a powerful individual and the current runner-up as the next emperor.
Of course, as it is taking place in the Rothstaylor Household, all the members of House Rothstaylor will be there.
The noble Krepin Rothstaylor, his successor, Tanya Rothstaylor.
Plus, Krepin had said that he was planning on reinstating his precious son, Ed Rothstaylor, during the event.
Wasn't that the same son that he himself had excommunicated for slandering the noble and benevolent Princess Penia? Even though he said that he would accept him as a member of the family again, his real intentions were unknown.
Well… right now, the most likely successor is still the youngest, Tanya Rothstaylor.
Selah left the room as the knights escorted her.
As she traversed through the imperial gardens, which were beautifully well kept and rather large, she fell into deep thought.
Even though many people would be attending, it was impossible to personally meet with everyone.
She would try her hardest to get to know all of them as much as she could, but… she still needed to set priorities.
Strength, financial power, and even religious support.
She narrowed her list down to the Northern Corps Commander Magnus Callamore, the investor with connections to the Elte Company, Roland, and Saint Clarice from the religious group.
Plus, it was necessary to get to know the members of the Rothstaylor Household once more. She didn't have any previous meetings with Tanya Rothstaylor, who was currently the heir, so she planned to use that time to get close to her.
"Hmm…"
She was thinking about Ed Rothstaylor, who was meant to be reinstated.
She had no way of knowing what Krepin Rothstaylor was thinking. Selah heard a rumor long ago that Ed was excommunicated and ruined, with no support from his family.
He was someone that had lived on the ground as a fallen nobleman for nearly two years now.
He had lost all of his dignity and authority. But more than anything, he must have experienced just how hellish life was without the glory of his family's name.
Rather than trying to fight for the position of heir, such people would instead focus on clinging to their families, afraid of being kicked out.
Since he had been at the bottom for several years, his position within the family would be ambiguous. He also wouldn't have had many chances to interact with influential individuals. It was obvious that he would try and turn things around during the social gathering.
Still, if she saw potential in him, she was open to the idea of investing early. However… given how much time had passed, she didn't know if it was worth investing in him. To put it bluntly, he was someone of minor importance to her.
"Princess Selah. I came to tell you that we will start preparing for your trip to House Rothstaylor."
"Please do so."
After responding to the guards, Selah entered the palace gates.
No matter what, the person that Selah was thinking about the most at that moment was Princess Penia.
She had no idea what Penia would do when she returned to the imperial palace during vacation. After all, during that period Selah herself would be vacant from her seat.
Feeling a bit uneasy, Selah decided to direct her closest aides to keep her mind focused.
* * *
"We were waiting for you. Come inside."
The captain of the escort team of Princess Penia, Claire, bowed her head.
I thanked her as I entered through the front door of the royal residence. Tanya, who timidly followed behind me, looked around.
"This seems like an entirely different world, brother."
Tanya, who entered the royal residence, looked around as she quickly cleared her throat in fear that she may have looked undignified.
The most luxurious and expensive facility on Acken Island was Ophelis Hall. However, if you were to simply look at the cost of expenses, then the royal residence would be next.
There was a difference in size.
Ophelis Hall was a large dormitory that was made for students of various aristocratic families.
The royal residence was less than half the size of Ophelis Hall, but still it was only built for one person. It was an unbelievable level of luxury.
It took a while just to enter the heavily guarded main entrance, cross through the garden, and then enter the mansion-like residence.
Only after traveling through the clean and luxurious hallways for some time was I finally able to see Princess Penia's reception room.
"W-Wait a moment…"
Before Tanya entered the room, she quickly straightened her hair as she tidied up her outfit.
Tanya had already met Princess Penia quite a few times. However, it was the first time she had officially visited her since becoming the student council president.
The morning before, Tanya wrote a letter to the royal residence.
Summer vacation was starting, and the Rothstaylor siblings were going back home. However, before that, there was something they wanted to ask of Princess Penia. That was the gist of the letter.
Princess Penia wasn't an easy person to meet. However, whether it was because Tanya was the student council president or if she had just wanted to meet with us after seeing our names, she accepted surprisingly readily.
Thus, the two of us had gone to the royal residence early that morning.
When the door opened up, I saw Princess Penia sitting alone on a sofa that looked quite expensive even from a glance.
Her lace dress also exuded a noble atmosphere. Her hair fell down past her shoulders.
The size of the sofa was much too large for her body.
She looked noble, but at the same time, rather lonely.
"Hello, Princess Penia. Thank you for allowing us an audience."
After I greeted her, Tanya quickly followed suit, bowing her head.
Princess Penia lowered her gaze as she nodded. She then looked at the sofa across from her. Tanya and I went to sit on it without saying a word.
"You look healthy, Ed Rothstaylor. And you as well, Miss Tanya."
"Yes. Have you been doing well yourself, Princess?"
"..."
Princess Penia didn't answer for a moment as she lowered her gaze once more.
"It's the same as always."
The butler of the residence politely walked up to me, putting down some tea. Tanya quickly took a sip.
"Princess Penia. The reason we came here today is because…"
"You must be in need of my authority."
Penia jumped straight to the point without hesitation.
Whether it was because of how Tanya and I looked in her eyes, or if it was because of her great insight…
I didn't know the answer to that, but at the very least, she didn't appear hostile.
Rather, Princess Penia's tone of voice was rather gentle.
"Ed Rothstaylor, it was my fault that you were excommunicated. Thus, with my approval, you will have an easier time being reinstated."
It felt as if she were being rather straightforward.
Either way, since I had to be reinstated, she already knew what we came for.
Going back to the Rothstaylor Household is a major gamble for me. It was something that required a lot of preparation.
In terms of strength, we had Lucy, so that wasn't a problem. Still, not everything could be solved with force alone.
Among nobility, ultimately most problems were resolved through 'authority'.
Gaining recognition from someone with high authority or an influential individual made it difficult to put your hands on them.
"Come to think of it, it's been a long time since I sent my regards to the head of House Rothstaylor. Ed Rothstaylor, could you deliver my handwritten letter to Krepin Rothstaylor on my behalf?"
Penia didn't say much. She had already prepared the letter in advance.
A servant slowly approached me as he gave me the personal letter of Princess Penia… It had a luxurious gold frame around it and the seal of the Kroel Imperial Family was also attached.
A letter from the imperial family wasn't something that could just be delivered by anyone. Thus, the meaning of that single paged letter was much heavier than you would think.
However, the most important point was that it was not sealed with wax.
The fact that it wasn't sealed implied that the sender fully trusted the one delivering the letter. It showed that she had complete trust and belief that I wouldn't do anything inappropriate with it.
Historically, it was a way to introduce someone that you trusted. It was a needlessly complicated piece of etiquette, but the royal family had always been like that.
The fact was, I was recognized by Princess Penia and fully entrusted with her authority. The letter, by its very existence, granted a special authority that prevented me, as the messenger, from being easily messed with.
"There is no need for me to write a letter granting you authority. That letter alone should be enough for you to return in glory."
"I had no idea you would help me so easily. I… was ready to negotiate with you more if needed."
"..."
Princess Penia didn't respond to that.
She was a person that had a skeptical view of House Rothstaylor. She also intended to reveal the hidden internal affairs of House Rothstaylor.
However, before Princess Penia started to take on such a troublesome task, she was willingly cooperating with us.
But she wasn't saying anything else. After I spoke, there was a long moment of silence. So much so I started to turn red with embarrassment.
Princess Penia was staring at me for a long period of time.
Her gaze was heavy, so I tried to find another topic to talk about… But it was of no use.

"The carriage sent from Rothstaylor Mansion will arrive in about two days."
After saying that, Tanya went back to Ophelis Hall. Now it was time to really go back home.
While I was back in the mansion, I wouldn't be able to manage the camp. That was why it was necessary to take several measures to ensure that it was alright for me to be absent long-term.
I needed to make a lock for the door of my cabin to shut it tight. I also needed to organize all of my tools that were scattered outside.
I still needed to retrieve all the traps I had set up in the forest, clean them up, and put them in storage. All of the food I had, aside from what I could store for a long time, needed to be disposed of.
After thinking about all the work that I needed to finish that day, I returned to the camp.
"E-Ed. You're heeeeeere~!"
Yennekar, who sat by the fireplace, looked at me with a strange tone in her voice as she spoke.
Even if she was trying to raise the tone of her voice on purpose and pretend to be fine, it was clear that she was nervous.
"Look at this. Bell gave us precious herbs, and I used them in the curry~! I tried it earlier, and~… It was really good~!"
"..."
As I stared at Yennekar's face, she started to shift her feet and sweat profusely.
"Why… are you looking at me like that…?"
Seeing her hiccup and stumble on her words was very much like herself.
As if I was staring a hole through her head, Yennekar had to glance away for a moment.
"..."
"Are you thinking about something useless again…?"
"No, but…"
Since the end of the exams, Yennekar has been acting like that.
She put her chin on her knee as she rested it. She always did that when she was depressed.
"I… Thought I knew you well, but. Sometimes I feel like I don't know a thing…"
"About me?"
I took off my shoes and poured out the dirt that was inside.
"I'm sure of it though. There isn't anyone in this school as close to me as you."
"Well, maybe physically our bodies might be close, but… I have no idea what you are thinking or how you live."
Yennekar took a deep breath. I wondered what was with her, but suddenly something came to mind.
"Is this about you giving up the top student seat? You think that was rude to me?"
"Hiccup…! No! No! No! No! No!"
"I'm sure of it now, seeing as you had to say it five times."
As I brushed off my shoes, the dirt rose up. I frowned as I waved my hand to get it out of my face. Either way, living in the forest, whenever you walk around, you're bound to get your clothes dirty quickly.
"There's no such thing as a person that does everything right the first time. That's how we learn."
"…Still, Ed… That's completely different…"
"...?"
"Ed, can you please forgive me this one time? Whether it was an accident… or a mistake I did on purpose…"
When I looked towards Yennekar with an expression that said that was absurd, she quickly waved her arms in the air. Seeing an expression that said she was the sorriest person in the entire world on her face, I was the one feeling sorry for her.
"D-Did I just make another mistake with what I just said?"
"What thing did you do that was so wrong?"
Yennekar closed her eyes tightly as she confessed.
"I-I also think my head is going to explode. I just keep having these bad thoughts…"
"Bad thoughts?"
"…Ed. I thought that you might hate me."
Again, I was left speechless.
Yennekar was a good-natured and kind person, but sometimes that attitude of hers could be rude to others.
The nicer and kinder you were, the rarer the experience of being hated by others was. So, for her, it seemed like she might never have been hated by another before.
That was why Yennekar was struggling so much. She was afraid that I might end up hating her.
"You don't have to worry."
"..."
"Even if you were a little rude, do you think I would end up hating you so easily? You are a special person to me."
Yennekar took a short breath as she looked up into my eyes. Looking at the tears welling up in the corners of her eyes, it seemed that she was worrying quite a bit.
Looking at that, didn't it seem like I always did bad things to her? I always tried my best to treat her well though.
"Anyway… I have something to ask you. Are you planning on going back home this break?"
"Hm?"
"Do you think you can accept this simple request?"
* * *
Two days later, a luxurious carriage crossed Mexes Bridge.
I waited by the front entrance with my luggage, already packed. I also took Tanya's luggage as well.
"They sent quite a large carriage. I guess since we will spend quite some time inside it, it's better that it's larger and more comfortable."
"Did you sleep well last night?"
"No. I was planning to sleep in the carriage, so I did some work instead. You look rather tired yourself, brother."
"I'm also exhausted after having taken care of some work at the camp."
"I see. Uhm… But…"
Tanya looked at the carriage crossing Mexes Bridge as she swung towards me and whispered.
"The atmosphere is already so scary. Will it be like this the entire time in the carriage…?"
I turned my head and looked behind me at the two girls standing side by side.
One girl had pink hair and wore a white blouse, a blue flared skirt, and a brown shawl.
The other girl was smaller, with white hair hanging over her loosely fitted shirt and skirt.
It went without saying, but it was Yennekar Palerover and Lucy Mayreel.
The two looked at each other as if puzzled… They were both making faces as if wondering 'why are you here?'
…And that was how things happened.
-x-X-x-
The Rothstaylor estate was located on the most desirable piece of land in the heart of the Empire. It boasted an incredibly large size in a highly ideal location.
In order to enter Kroelon, the empire's capital, from the western coast of the continent— which was full of bustling cities—it was necessary to pass through the Rothstaylor Estate.
Its location suggested that House Rothstaylor protected the Kroel Imperial Family. That was why the citizens of the empire called the Rothstaylor Estate the Shield of the Capital.
And those who have actually passed through the estate understood why such a place was considered the Golden Land of the Empire.
A meadow draped in warm sunlight. A long, gentle road. A wide landscape that was relaxing to look at. Put together, it resembled paradise.
Looking at the flat road ahead of the carriage, all the worries filling one's head would be blown away. Just hearing the wheels of the carriage turn was enough to relax someone.
The same was true for Tanya, who had spent most of her life at the Rothstaylor Estate.
As the carriage entered the estate, a familiar scene caught her eye. Normally, that would be the moment she calmed her heart and enjoyed the peaceful scenery.
"..."
However, Tanya's complexion was dark blue. As if feeling the chill of winter, she tried her best to continue looking forward.
The carriage could seat up to four people, and two seats faced each other.
Aside from the driver, there were four people in the party, so there was just enough seats.
However, one of them was left vacant. That was because Lucy Mayreel wasn't sitting in her seat.
"Uhm…"
For Tanya, her upperclassmen Lucy Mayreel was someone with a four-dimensional personality. Someone that was difficult to understand in a variety of ways.
Usually, her brother Ed was in control of Lucy. However, this time the situation was slightly different.
Lucy sat on Ed's lap, exhaling in short breaths like a baby bird. The way she sat, with her body curled up, was in stark contrast to the way she usually was. Tanya wasn't used to seeing such a sight.
And Yennekar, who sat in front of Lucy staring intently at her, was sitting right next to Tanya.
It wouldn't be strange if a burst of flames were to come out of her eyes at that moment. That's why Tanya could only straighten her back and carefully hold her breath.
As she kept her head down and hid her cold sweat, she remembered the time she upset Yennekar before.
"..."
Every woman around Ed Rothstaylor was terrifying.
Yennekar was like a heavenly girl, Lucy was like a fluttering feather, and Lortel looked rather mature… But for Tanya, who had seen the opposite side of each of them, her body trembled just remembering it.
Whoever Ed associated himself with was a major issue that could change the relationship within their family. However, Tanya was unable to say anything against it because of the trauma she had accumulated.
Creak
Yennekar slowly stood up from her seat.
Ed Rothstaylor was asleep, leaning against the wall of the carriage.
It was a long journey, one where they had to spend two nights outside. Naturally, the party had also become quite tired. It was about time that everyone began to talk less and lose energy.
It was only natural that he would be sleeping in the carriage. However, Lucy had naturally climbed up on his lap, falling into a deep sleep and rolling her body around.
Yennekar, who was watching her, couldn't stand it anymore… She grabbed Lucy's body and put her back in her seat.
"Y-Yennekar…"
"It's dangerous to sleep like that…"
After saying that, she sat back down. However, Lucy looked around with a blank expression as she crawled back up on Ed's lap.
She wasn't drooling, but it did seem as if she were barely half-awake.
Yennekar pulled her away over and over again, but Lucy continued to climb back on his lap, falling asleep. She was very stubborn.
"Euu… Eeeek…"
In the end, to stop Lucy from climbing back onto Ed's lap, she had no choice but to block the path.
Yennekar stumbled around as she eventually sat down on Ed's lap herself.
"..."
She then happened to make eye contact with Tanya. She lowered her head as if embarrassed, but she still didn't get off his lap.
When Lucy quickly opened her eyes, looking at Yennekar, Yennekar straightened her back as if saying 'what are you going to do about it?'
Compared to Lucy, who was rather petite, Yennekar was much bigger. Plus, the carriage wasn't all that spacious, so she was worried that if her body started to move around, she might end up bumping into something.
Still, she clenched her teeth as she held onto Ed's knees. It seemed like it was her last act out of pride, so Tanya couldn't say anything to her.
"…What the…?"
Shortly after, Ed woke up startled, jumping and making Yennekar hit her head on the carriage's roof.
* * *
"We will arrive some time tomorrow."
Even though they had just entered the Rothstaylor Estate, there was still quite a way to go before they reached the mansion.
Lucy clung to Ed's back as Yennekar stared at Lucy, not giving in.
Meanwhile Tanya's teeth were trembling as she chewed through a piece of bacon.
Camping… However, thanks to all the luxurious tents and camping equipment the driver prepared, it wasn't all that bad.
The four of them had dinner sitting around the campfire… Even in the middle of summer, there was still a cool breeze.
Tanya knew just how powerful Yennekar and Lucy were. From her point of view, seeing the two of them fight like that—with sparks flying—was terrifying.
In the first place, Tanya was already afraid of both girls before they even started fighting. It was like lighting a match next to a gunpowder barrel that was about to explode.
Ed, on the other hand, looked a bit uncomfortable. Still, he managed to somewhat mediate between the two of them.
"B-Brother…"
However, Tanya's fatigue had already reached its peak. Things were like that throughout the entire trip. The only thing she could do was tremble in fear between them.
"Y-You are quite close with each other…"
Tanya's sharp political senses had pinpointed exactly what needed to be done at the moment.
She had to pick the right side.
Between the two of them, who was the one she needed to stick close to survive… That was what she needed to do. In the end, the most important thing was determining which one Ed looked at more favorably.
"..."
Ed put some bread in his mouth as he looked at Tanya.
They talked a lot while riding the carriage.
How did Ed become so close to people like Yennekar and Lucy? What kind of life did he live after being excommunicated? What hardships did he face and how did he overcome them?
Just sitting still and listening to him was enough to be in admiration of his journey. In the process, Tanya was also able to understand on a deeper level just what Yennekar and Lucy meant to Ed.
Yennekar was his best friend, a rival of sorts in the same grade as him, and they had built up affection for each other while living together.
In particular, she presented the image of someone who would always support him no matter what, even back in his days when he was nothing… There were many moments where Tanya felt emotional just hearing of it.
On the other hand, Lucy was Ed's strength. In many cases, she was also the solution to his troubles… She was a trustworthy pillar of support. Ed was also the only one who had a deep understanding of her feelings and struggles. Right now, he was also the meaning of her life, and held an incredible level of importance to her.
Even though he pretends that wasn't the case, Ed also seemed to be emotionally dependent on Lucy for a lot. That was why it was hard to imagine the two of them apart, since they both held a special meaning to each other.
The problem was that there was only one man, but two women. In fact, if you looked at the school as a whole, there were more than just two.
It was hard to imagine just what kind of mess the situation would be if Lortel were with them. Tanya sighed. Fortunately, the only people Ed needed to bring as his means of power were the two of them.
While immersed in the atmosphere, the coachman spoke to Tanya.
"Lady Tanya, when you return to the mansion tomorrow, I believe you will have talks about the negotiations of the seal."
"Ah, that's right. It's already been nearly a year since the Sage's Seal had been transferred over, so if we proceed with the purchase now, people won't be suspicious."
If Lortel sold the Sage's Seal right after buying it, there was a possibility that the connection between the Elte Company and House Rothstaylor would be exposed, creating suspicions.
That was why House Rothstaylor was judging the appropriate time needed before purchasing the seal. And right about now, the Elte Company should also be thinking about the profits of the Seal… So, it was time to actively negotiate the purchase.
"Also, Roland—who is one of the higher ups of the Elte Company—will be participating in the social event this time. You can talk to him about it then."
"In actuality, it would be much faster and quicker to handle things with Lortel, but… Being the student council president, who knows what rumors would circulate if I were to personally meet with the highest executive of the Elte Company…"
"It would be ideal to come up with a rough estimate, come up with a plan, and proceed with the deal after school starts up again."
After the coachman finished speaking, Tanya nodded her head.
And the moment she was about to take another sip of the herbal tea the coachman had brewed—
"Yennekar Palerover."
A voice called out that name.
Her eyes immediately went to Lucy, who was sitting, wrapped around Ed's back.
Lucy Mayreel. It was the first time she had seen her call someone else's name out directly. That guy, that kid, that man, that old man, that person. Wasn't she a girl who always referred to others in such a manner?
People thought that she didn't memorize other people's names because it was bothersome, but right now, that theory was proven false.
Ed was also curious as he raised his eyes, looking towards Lucy.
Then, Lucy looked straight at Yennekar as she spoke.
"Do it in moderation. There are a lot of spirits around here, too."
After that long confrontation, a preemptive attack finally flew in.
Tanya took a deep breath. However, she was so nervous that she couldn't exhale.
"…What?"
"Every day, there are all these spirits gathering around the camp. Whenever Ed does something, they run over to you and start chattering away, reporting about it."
You could guess what Lucy was trying to say. Yennekar shrugged her shoulders for a moment as she broke out in cold sweat.
"At a glance, it's obvious that they are watching Ed's every single move. Don't you think it bothers him, having them watch him every second of every single day and night…?"
Hearing those words, Yennekar swallowed her breath. She glanced over to look at Ed's expression.
In the first place, Ed was already aware that there were always a large number of spirits around him.
Of course, the Northern Forest wasn't always full of spirits. But around the camp, there are always a particularly high number of spirits coming and going.
Ed didn't care all that much because he wasn't doing anything that he couldn't show to others.
However, Lucy, who came in and out of the camp as often as Ed, was extremely bothered by it… She snuggled up behind Ed's back as she spoke straight to Yennekar.
"It's insidious."
"Th-That… The spirits, on their own…"
"You could stop them from doing it, but you don't. While pretending to be pure…"
Tanya raised her eyes as she glanced towards Yennekar. Yennekar wiggled her fingers, trying to avoid Tanya, as if her gaze were heavy.
Unable to watch any further, Ed put some more bacon and bread into his mouth before speaking.
"It's fine. I don't really care. Honestly, from my position, they help with safety. It's not like they've only been talkative for a day or two. Honestly, there are many things that the spirits have helped me with."
"See…! He doesn't even care…!"
"But at the same time… I didn't think that it would be at the level of reporting my every move…"
Yennekar swallowed her breath again as Lucy quickly turned her body, sitting down on Ed's lap. While Yennekar furrowed her brow, she couldn't help but glance at Ed's reaction.
"D-Does that… make you feel bad?"
"It's not that it makes me feel bad, but… It's just that I didn't know about it. Don't worry too much."
"Eughk…"
Yennekar pursed her lips, unable to say anything else.
She never gave the order for the spirits to report Ed's every move, but she didn't stop the spirits from talking about Ed, either.
Since the crime wasn't any better even if it wasn't intentional, Yennekar had no choice but to keep her mouth shut.
"Dark, insidious, shady…"
Lucy sat on Ed's lap, muttering out those words. Like usual, she had dazed eyes as she spoke in a sleepy tone… But strangely, it felt as if she were also smiling.
Yennekar couldn't stand it since she hated Lucy, but… Unfortunately, everything she said was a fact. A rebuttal was impossible.
"If it were me, I would feel so sorry and go far away as posibleeeee—"
As Lucy was saying whatever she felt like, Ed pulled on her tiny cheeks.
"Don't go overboard. You know very well that Yennekar didn't do that with bad intentions."
"Ed…!"
As Yennekar nodded her head in excitement, Lucy puffed her cheeks as she tugged at Ed's tie. Although she had a dissatisfied expression on her face, she couldn't use force against Ed. That was why she was protesting in her own little way.
Ed continued to talk while patting Lucy's head.
"Anyway, when we get to the mansion, I will probably meet with my father right after a simple luncheon. We should go to the luncheon together, though."
Now that they were close to the Rothstaylor mansion, they had to talk about what they would do the next day.
"After introducing you two and having a conversation, we will talk about the social event… And each of you will get assigned a room. In any case, I think it would be better if Lucy were assigned the room closest to me."
"H-Huh… Why?"
Yennekar asked in surprise.
"Yennekar, you need to be in a room a little further away. Use your spirits as secretly as possible to check the overall structure of the mansion."
"I am already well aware of the mansion's structure, brother."
"There is a big difference between hearing words and actually seeing it. And you should check the flow of magic power to see if anything is unnatural, or if there are any suspicious places."
Putting his hand down on Lucy's head, Ed firmly spoke to the group.
"We're here to find evidence to reveal the truth behind Krepin Rothstaylor. Let's not forget that fact. With our testimony as insiders, if we can find enough evidence to prove it then the position of Krepin will be shaken."
"..."
Yennekar and Lucy didn't react to those words, but there was a shadow on Tanya's expression.
Tanya was a girl that admired Krepin her entire life and had lived all for the glory of House Rothstaylor.
Over the past few months, her opinion must have changed a lot as she learned the truth behind it all. She had even directly experienced the overturning of the murder charges… Still, as the youngest daughter of the family, it was complicated for her to bring down Krepin.
The human mind could not be changed easily. Ed wanted Tanya to steel her heart, at least while they were in the Rothstaylor mansion.
Then Lucy opened her mouth.
"There's no need for me to go to the next room. After all, I need to always have my eyes on you."
The Rothstaylor mansion was basically enemy territory.
That was why Lucy always seemed ready to protect him.
Lucy clasped her knees as she spoke in a dazed voice.
"Let's just share the same room. You can just ask them to do that."
Again, there was silence.
Tanya got goosebumps, so she couldn't bear to see Yennekar's expression.
"Wh-What are you saying…?"
"Your job is to keep a close eye on the interior of the mansion, but mine is to keep him safe."
"E-Ed… S-She's saying stupid…"
Yennekar couldn't finish her sentence. That was because she saw Ed with his hand on his chin, thinking about it seriously.
No matter what, right now Ed was risking his life. The stakes were too large to take any unnecessary risks for no reason.
Seeing that, Yennekar was losing her mind.
* * *
The outer walls of the mansion could be seen in the distance.
The scale of it was so amazing that it looked closer to a village than a mansion.
There was also a small hill and a clock tower that had a massive version of the House crest on it.
The main building of the mansion, the shabbier building used by the servants, one for storage, and another for managing the garden… There were about five or six buildings in sight.
It was the home Ed and Tanya Rothstaylor were born and raised in. It was also the headquarters of the Rothstaylor Household that ruled over the continent.
A mansion of that size was suitable for their glory. It was much larger than Ophelis Hall, where the distinguished students of Silvenia Academy lived.
In fact, that was obvious. If the mansion of the continent's most powerful man was smaller than a dormitory at a school, what would that look like?
When the mercenaries guarding the main entrance of the mansion greeted us politely and opened the gate, a beautiful road decorated with roses and trees stretched out towards the mansion.
As the coachman pulled his horse towards the mansion, the servants and vassals that were passing by while doing their work politely bowed their heads towards the carriage.
Here, the members of House Rothstaylor were like emperors and gods. Here, the powerful Duke Rothstaylor commanded the land as far as one could see. His words were stronger than those of Emperor Kroel, who was located off in the distant capital.
As we rode the carriage for a while longer, I saw a number of maids and servants lining up at the entrance of the mansion.
"We have finally arrived."
As the coachman politely opened the carriage door, the entrance to the massive mansion came into view.
The marble steps, decorated with flowers, looked majestic. A procession of workers lined up on both sides as they bowed their heads. Seeing that, Yennekar, who was a mere commoner, lost her breath.
Of course, Lucy didn't seem to care at all.
"You have gone through a lot during such a long journey."
The coachman gave his farewells before getting out of the way. Tanya was the first to nod her head. Naturally, she was escorted off the carriage as she handed her luggage to a servant.
After that, Lucy and Yennekar, who were sitting by the exit, got off next.
Lucy jumped down casually, while Yennekar was embarrassed and burdened by everyone around her.
She had never been treated like that in her entire life, so she was flustered. She walked forwards, fiddling her fingers, but when a servant politely asked for her luggage, she became startled and began walking backwards quickly.
She was someone who definitely couldn't become a noble.
Finally, I got off as I naturally handed my personal luggage to a servant.
Thud!
At that moment, the small wooden bag that held my things fell to the floor. It seemed that I had let go of it too early while handing it over.
In a moment, the noise spread out throughout the entrance. There was tension among the workers. It spread among each and every one of them, as if a great disaster had arrived.
"I-I apologize…! Young Master Ed…!"
Suddenly the servant who was holding my luggage threw his head down onto the floor.
"I-I was just nervous after seeing you after a long time…! Your majesty was so dazzling, seeing you return back home in glory. This humble thing of yours has made a mistake…!"
As if he were still traumatized, he apologized with all his might as he crawled on the floor.
I could easily guess what Ed Rothstaylor's usual words and actions were like.
I didn't bother saying anything as I picked up the wooden bag myself. The worker trembled as he took a defensive posture. He must have thought that I would hit him with a swing from my wooden bag.
I looked around, but none of the other workers moved one bit. However, looking closely, I could see each of them in a cold sweat.
"It's alright. I can carry it myself."
After saying that, I walked through the entrance with my wooden bag.
Among the workers who lowered their heads, a strange silence spread. I already knew why they felt such a strange sense of incongruity… It's because I didn't make a scene.
* * *
The first thing I saw after entering through the front door was a massive portrait.
Behind the eagle statue that symbolized House Rothstaylor's majesty, there was a massive portrait that took up the large wall.
It was usually a place where one would hang a picture of their ancestors or the current head of the house.
It would be done to clearly state the origins of the House to visitors of the mansion.
However, the portrait hanging in the lobby was of a young woman.
Her wide-open eyes were full of vitality and life. Her blonde hair flowed down tremendously, like her benevolent heart.
Her gentle smile showed so much warmth that one would feel comfort by just looking at it.
And her name was written below the portrait.
'Arwen Rothstaylor.'
"It must have been a long time since you've last seen Arwen's portrait, brother. But when you lived in the mansion… strangely, you hated it."
Saying that, Tanya swallowed her breath. She was worried that she might have said something inappropriate.
I shook my head as I looked up at the large portrait once more.
They were no longer in this world.
And I was not in a position to talk about them, either.
It was just Krepin's intentions for hanging such a large portrait of Arwen… I was curious about them.
Was it the longing for his daughter, who had left the world first? Or was it to simply pay tribute to the eldest daughter of House Rothstaylor?
Unless you were him, it was probably impossible to know.
"You're here."
At that moment, the large wooden door above the lobby's stairs opened. A man appeared with four servants.
"You've gone through a lot, traveling such a long way."
He had a thick cloak wrapped around his luxurious clothes, which were made with all sorts of expensive fabrics.
The reason he looked young for his age wasn't all that complicated. It was simply because he was rich.
I looked up at Krepin, who was standing by the railing, before speaking slowly.
"It's been a long time, Father."
How was he going to take that statement?
Amidst the silence… Finally, Krepin opened his mouth.
"Yes. I worried about you quite a lot. I missed you, Ed. My son."
Krepin was relaxed as he smiled broadly.
No one in the group could feel the emotions and closeness of a family, despite the affection on his face.
The layers on his face, acting like a mask…We all knew it's falseness all too well.

"I would like to have breakfast with you all, but Selah, the princess of Frost, has arrived at Rothstaylor mansion. Since a member of the imperial family has personally come here, they should be treated with the utmost respect, as is appropriate of a vassal."
They were in a small reception room at the back of the main lobby.
Although it was small, it was already bigger than the living room of a regular house. All the furniture were high-quality. It wasn't an easy task to calculate just how much money went into the room.
"So, for this morning, let's have you guided to your rooms so that you may rest. Then, we can have luncheon together. There are many stories to share and things we need to resolve, right?"
"Yes, thank you, Father."
It was a conversation with a mask on.
One between a son who had returned after a long absence and a father who welcomed him… Yet there was no sincerity in the conversation between the two.
It was a simple back and forth exchange before the two of them tried to determine each other's intentions.
"Right now, the house is rather chaotic. Tomorrow evening, we are scheduled to host a rather grand social event. So, all of the servants have been busy preparing for it. I hope you will be understanding if they have been a little negligent. Everyone already has their hands quite full, as distinguished guests of the empire will be participating…"
During a five-day period, all sorts of different distinguished guests would come and go on different days.
Each one of them had a different date they would arrive, a different length of stay, inclination, and status. Since the servants had to take care of all of them, they had their hands full.
"I apologize for coming during such a busy period."
"No. Rather, it was I who called you to come at this time. During the social gathering, I plan to let the world know that the son I'm so proud of, Ed Rothstaylor, has returned. You've been out of high society for so long, you may need to make new connections. I hope this gathering will be an opportunity to do so."
As Krepin spoke, Yennekar and Lucy sipped tea on the other side of the sofa.
"Over there… Are those the classmates who are taking care of my son?"
"I-I'm… Y-Yennekar… P-Palerover… Ah…"
Sweating, shaking, slurring her words, fidgeting her hands, and trembling her eyes. She had a talent for doing everything that you shouldn't do when you were nervous.
Yennekar had reached her limit and was out of her mind with nerves. That was because she had to speak in front of a duke that was one of the most influential people in the Empire, and the treatment she had been receiving since arriving was on a different level than she was accustomed to.
As she played with her braided hair for no particular reason, she couldn't make eye contact. Some might look at that as a trivial type of charm, but it wasn't something you should do in front of a duke and the head of the house.
"There's no need to be so nervous. If you are my son's friend, then you should raise your shoulders proudly."
As Krepin spoke in a benevolent tone, Yennekar came back to her senses, nodding her head.
"And it's not like I haven't heard your name before. Weren't you the Elementalist who had tremendous skills, able to handle high-ranking spirits without difficulty? And you must be the other one Tanya mentioned in her letter… The famous once-in-a-lifetime genius magician…"
"Lucy Mayreel."
Her words were short.
Yennekar hiccupped. She was surprised to see Lucy saying her name without acting respectfully or speaking politely. And she did it in front of none other than the duke, who was the head of House Rothstaylor.
Lucy leaned back in her chair as she stared blankly at Krepin, not moving a bit.
It wasn't just Yennekar—the servants around them also stood completely still. Krepin Rothstaylor was famous for being a benevolent duke. However, he was also extremely harsh to those that crossed the line.
Authority was something established by others. However, there were times when one must show it themselves. Otherwise, disciples would slack, and servants will look down on their lord.
Krepin, who was well aware of that fact, looked at Lucy, who only said a few words.
Even in such an atmosphere, Lucy didn't change her behavior.
It was one of the two. She was either a person with no common sense, or… she didn't consider him a threat to her.
Lucy Mayreel was closer to the latter than the former.
The confidence that no one could subdue her.
Even if her opponent held a higher status, she never thought that they would be able to use force to defeat her.
That was why Lucy always acted the way she wanted to, regardless of who she met. That is, except for one person.
Ed Rothstaylor.
"You've brought some interesting friends here."
Krepin finally relaxed his expression. He also seemed to notice Lucy's confidence, which led to her behavior.
He was sure that she wasn't bluffing. After all, she held the title as Silvenia's greatest genius.
Still, she had crossed the line and clearly showed an attitude that challenged the Rothstaylor name. But Krepin was in an urgent situation, where he needed to quickly go out and meet with the Princess of Frost.
"Well then, let's talk slowly over lunch later on."
After saying that, Krepin stood up from his seat.
"…Ah, that's right. I have something to give you, father."
* * *
"Then, if you need anything please call on me."
Creak.
The servant gave her greetings politely before carefully closing the door.
Ed Rothstaylor's personal room.
The room the pathetic and stupid third-rate villain used before entering Silvenia Academy.
It was surprising that the room remained completely intact, despite him being excommunicated. Though, in the first place, there were already so many empty rooms in the mansion that the waste of space was negligible.
I had also heard that Arwen Rothstaylor's room wasn't touched and was left as-is. However, that was probably because it held a special meaning.
The room was as large as three regular rooms put together. I sat on one side of my bed in the luxurious personal room.
On the table next to the bed, there was tea that the servant had poured. I picked up the teacup and poured it into the flowerpot by the window.
I then wandered around the room for a while, looking for any possible traps or monitoring magically engineered devices. However, nothing caught my eye.
I then locked my door to make sure it worked. I also finished checking whether the windows would lock properly.
A basic safety check like that… It didn't mean much, since Krepin could break through anything if he really wanted to. Still, I had to be at least a little cautious, so I did that much.
"Hmm… Is there anything else to check?"
All the servants had welcomed me, Krepin was glad to see me, and the room was left exactly as it was.
Regardless of the situation, it felt as if I had returned home. I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief… But still, I couldn't lower my guard.
Then, when I decided to check all the other possible risks, just in case…
Creak
The door to my room opened. Seeing as they came in without knocking, it wasn't a servant.
The reason I couldn't see her face at first glance was because of her petite body. If I lowered my head, I could see Lucy, with her white hair hanging down as she pushed the door.
"Lucy… Didn't you say that you were going to stay in the same room as me?"
Because of the useless war of nerves that she had with Krepin, Lucy didn't' dare say that she would share a room with me.
After all, if she had said those words in front of my father, everything would have been flipped upside down. Lucy shook her head as she walked into my room, holding a pillow in her arms.
She then threw herself onto the large bed in the corner of my room. It was cute to see her buried in the sheets on my bed.
"Wake me up if something happens."
After saying that, she quietly fell asleep.
I didn't need to worry, despite her sleeping soundly like that. That was because she could quickly wake up whenever the situation was dire.
More than anything, didn't she already promise to stick with me and protect me while we were in the mansion? I could see that she was keeping her promise to stay next to me, so I was rather grateful towards her.
Even though she wasn't interested in anything and acted as if she was living her life in a half-assed manner, she never forgot to help when something major happened.
I started to look through the room again, leaving Lucy alone so she could sleep in peace.
When I opened the closet, there were several luxurious outfits that seemed to have been recently washed. It seemed that they had prepared it in advance so that I could wear it while participating in the social gathering.
The bed sheets, curtains, and even sofa covers were spotless, with no dust in sight. It seemed like they cleaned the place up after hearing the news that I was returning home.
I then headed towards a private table on the opposite side by a window. It looked like a study desk that was meant to be used when studying for school or reading a book.
I opened all the drawers to see if there was anything worthwhile inside. Ed Rothstaylor's junk was still inside.
Most of it was luxurious jewelry, ties, ceremonial daggers, high-end writing tools—things like that.
Thud, Thud
But when I tried to check the top drawer, it didn't open.
It looked like it was locked from the inside.
"So, I just wanted to ask you. Maybe… the reason behind you trying to get out of our House by whatever means necessary… Was it related to that 'drawer'…?"
"…Drawer…?"
"The drawer… the one in your room that you never let me get close to or open. At some point, you even locked it with a key. Even now, back at the Rothstaylor mansion, it should still be there…"
"This… is it the drawer that Tanya was talking about…"
I calmed my breathing.
There was something inside of it.
Something that Ed Rothstaylor tried to hide before I took over his body.
If they really hadn't touched his room, then that meant whatever it was, it was still likely in the drawer.
But… There was no way to open it right now. I didn't even know where the key was.
"…Should I break it?"
It didn't look all that sturdy.
However, smashing the desk as soon as I arrived was something that would make me stand out. If a servant reported it, Krepin might become suspicious of me.
And even if he didn't get suspicious, I still didn't know what was inside of it. So, I couldn't just go ahead and use force.
It might be some papers that could be easily damaged. Maybe it was a magically engineering device that has a lot of sensitive parts.
"Hmm… Maybe I can just try and break the lock delicately… But that is still too much for my magic power resonance…"
Crack.
At that moment, a small force was applied to the lock. There was hardly any change to the outer appearance, but it felt as if the hinge connecting the internal locking device was broken.
In fact, when I gently pulled on the drawer, it opened more smoothly than I thought.
"…What?"
As I turned around, Lucy, who was lying on the bed, changed her posture.
It looked like she was laying down without a thought, but in fact, she was thinking about me.
She was certainly reliable. Whenever I was with Lucy, it seemed that I would never face a sudden death.
After I gave my thanks, I pulled the drawer all the way out and opened it.
Inside… there was a massive pile of letters.
I wanted to look through it all, so I took out a bundle and placed it on the desk. All the letters were handwritten by Ed.
"This… What in the world…?"
It seemed like it would take some time to read through all of them. Still, I needed to at least figure out what the letters were about.
I took the letter on the top as I read through it roughly from top to bottom. Of all the letters in the pile, that one seemed to be the most recent.
'Dear sister Arwen, who I admire deeply.'
I took a deep breath as I scratched my chin. I couldn't help but be taken aback.
It… was about the character, Ed Rothstaylor which there was no way of knowing… completely unknown territory.
A third-rate villain who exited from Act 1, Scene 1. The story of a stupid bastard… who was excommunicated for framing the protagonist, Taylee McLaure, in vain.
'If I go on like this, I will soon die.
What is the meaning of a life where I have to die anyway? What value is there in a life that is just waiting for a promised death?
My life, drunk on Rothstaylor's glory, was short. However, now I'm going to finish it all.
Sister, I guess you can't reply to these letters anymore. So, I will find my own path. I can't make the same choice as you, sister.
My journey as a member of House Rothstaylor ends here. But my life doesn't.'
As I read through the fragmented contents… I quietly held my breath as I put the letter down.
I turned the letter over as I looked back at the remaining pile of letters.
They were the letters Arwen and Ed had exchanged while they were both still alive. Judging by the amount, it was enough to span a few years.
As I continued to unfold the papers, a feather fell out from them, falling onto the desk.
"This… is a quill… No. Is it just a feather?"
Picking up the feather, I grabbed the end of it, flipping it around. It was a feather engraved with a mysterious red pattern.
I didn't know its use. I put it down on the desk as I looked at the piles of paper, taking a deep breath.
First off, it seemed I had something to do whenever I had time.
I needed to put the massive number of letters all into my head.
* * *
Krepin Rothstaylor held onto a letter that contained the seal of Princess Penia.
Seeing that there were no measures taken to seal the letter, Princess Selah swallowed her dry saliva.
Is it that Krepin Rothstaylor, a person crucial to the imperial family, has already taken the side of Princess Penia?
Otherwise, there was no reason for him to be holding onto an unsealed letter. That letter was a symbol of her complete and total trust.
"You seemed to be misunderstanding something."
A luxurious breakfast in the early morning.
Selah, who visited the Rothstaylor estate, was treated with utmost hospitality.
She exchanged a light conversation with Krepin, but her gaze didn't move away from the letter in his hand.
The sharp Krepin seemed to have pinpointed exactly what Selah was thinking.
"An unsealed letter doesn't symbolize their trust in the receiver… Rather, it is their trust in the messenger of the letter."
That was right. It was a rare and stupid misunderstanding that Selah had made.
Krepin smiled as he put the letter he was reading back into his pocket.
"I think Princess Selah must be wondering who the one that delivered this letter was, yes?"
Before all the influential individuals across the continent arrived at the Rothstaylor Estate… There was already a strange ongoing current, like the eve of a storm.
There was only one day left before the massive social gathering that was held only once a year.
