Chapter 371 - EASG 68

Chapter 213: King of the Duds (1)

"No."

It was not common for Lucy to adamantly refuse a request from me.

"You could die."

It was obvious that she was refusing because she was worried.

She had been leaning against the tree, reading a book. Then she jumped down onto the ground, her hair flying around. Looking up at me with blank eyes, she casually spoke about something horrific.

"I don't want to kill you. It's not easy to control the firepower of Advanced Magic."

"Obviously, I don't want to die either."

It was such an obvious statement that I shouldn't have needed to say it.

"I already made the magic engineering product 'Dell Heim's Hourglass' in advance. As long as I have it on me, I won't be able to die from an attack."

"But you'll get hurt."

"If I can achieve a massive result in a short amount of time, naturally I need to do all I can. Anyone would do the same."

Lucy understood my desire to grow as quickly as possible.

The Holy Blue Dragon Velbrok's descent wouldn't take place when we were ready. After all, most disasters were like that.

"I don't have time. So, duel with me. At least until I have learned advanced magic, keep attacking me. If I were the same as before, I wouldn't stand a chance in a duel against you… At least now, I won't die from a single attack."

In the world of magic, experience became skill. However, no one would want to learn by walking a tightrope with their life on the line against her. Though, in the first place, there weren't any other magicians who could cast dozens of advanced magic spells.

For Lucy Mayreel, it was something she could easily do if she wanted to.

When she went all out against the Evil God Mebula, she wielded an insane amount of magic power—enough to cast more than fifty advanced magic circles while also using ultimate magic.

And after a good night's rest, she was able to take on the magic power of dozens of people in a single night. There was no one better to face off against than her.

Not just anyone would be blessed with the opportunity to duel against one of the most gifted magicians in history.

When I had first come into this body not long ago, I wouldn't have survived a single attack, so I didn't even try facing her… But now, everything was different. My growth had already progressed quite far.

And if I wanted to learn advanced magic with my weak body—one that had taken a long time just to raise its magic power resonance—the only choice I had was to charge forward recklessly.

"Rather, if you hold back while I'm holding the hourglass, it won't activate, and I'll only get injured. So, it'll be better if you raise your firepower as if you were really trying to kill me."

"That's not hard to do, but I don't want to. I refuse."

It was rare for Lucy to be so resolute.

"I don't want you to get hurt."

"Lucy, please understand how desperate I am. You know as well."

"..."

And like that, we stared at each other in silence. Neither of us showed any sign of backing down.

Eventually, Lucy let out a heavy sigh and pressed down on her large witch hat.

"Fine."

***

The cliffside was located at the northern tip of Acken Island.

Tall rocky cliffs stretched along the coast. Standing at the edge and looking straight down would give anyone goosebumps.

Around the time of the Student Council Election, I had been stabbed there and fallen all the way down. Thinking back on it now, I must have been out of my mind.

Walking a little farther along the cliff, there was a large open meadow. Since it was the furthest spot from Silvenia, barely anyone came there. There were probably only a few students who had ever walked through the North Forest all the way to this place.

The wind blew through the meadow, making my collar flutter.

Lucy, who was facing me from a distance, also had the hem of her skirt flutter in the wind. She held down her hat to keep it from flying away as she slowly began to gather her magic power.

I was in perfect condition. Not only physically, but my magic power had also fully recovered. I could use and manifest any of the spirits I had available.

On the dagger I gripped tightly, I had engraved a new spiritual skill. On the dagger that was already imbued with Mugg's spiritual skill, Explosion, I added Merilda's spiritual skill, Crosswinds.

I had carried that dagger with me ever since I started living in the wild. Now, not only my weapon proficiency, but even my magic power resonance had risen dramatically. I could even use the spiritual skills of high-ranking spirits without difficulty.

Merilda's spiritual skill, Crosswinds, was a destructive spell that instantly destroyed or weakened an enemy's magic power.

Magic attacks were extremely fast, so casting it at the perfect timing was difficult. However, even considering its defensive capabilities alone, it was already an incredible spell.

Still, I wasn't certain whether it would be able to block Lucy's advanced magic. It seemed far more likely that her magic would simply break through it. Even so, it was better than being hit directly.

"..."

Amid the passing wind, Lucy raised one hand.

Casually, she clenched her fist, gathering an insane amount of magic power—far beyond what a normal magician could achieve no matter how hard they tried.

Any magician would feel that it was utterly unfair upon witnessing her magic power efficiency.

Without changing her expression—

Boom!!!

Lightning struck.

I couldn't even see the flow of the magic she cast. The only reason I managed to respond was thanks to my reflexes and Merilda, who had manifested in her human form and was hastily deploying magic circles to defend against the attack.

Boom!!!

Whoosh!!

Crash!

I raised the dagger in my hand and thrust it forward with my other arm.

For the sake of magic efficiency, I had manifested Merilda in her human form. Even so, she was still a high-ranking spirit. Her white hair fluttered violently in the wind as she began to sweat, rapidly pouring her magic power into the spiritual skill engraved on my dagger.

Thanks to her, I managed to defend against the attack accurately.

Surprisingly, my response was perfect.

However, blocking the attack didn't mean I escaped its aftereffects.

Though I defended myself, every bone in my body trembled violently from the recoil.

Smoke filled the air. My collar and hair, which had been tossed around by the attack, finally settled—but my legs continued to shake.

"Keuk…"

I frowned as I looked down at the dagger in my hand. Magic power leaked out, overflowing past the spiritual skill's capacity.

"Still… I handled that better than I thought…"

Were all those days of training not in vain? Even though Lucy was one of the most gifted magicians in history, her magic hadn't ended me in a single blow.

But that thought—

"That wasn't advanced magic."

"..."

"I used an intermediate spell first to test the waters."

Intermediate Lightning Magic: Lightning Spear.

The spell that pierced its target with a spear of lightning. Thinking back on it, that was indeed what she had cast—it had simply been too fast to recognize at the time.

All around me were traces of its aftermath. The grass within several meters of where I stood had been scorched.

That was not the power of an ordinary Lightning Spear.

Even as intermediate magic, Lucy Mayreel's casting made it something entirely different. I already knew that.

"Then… now I'm coming."

Lucy wore an unwilling expression. Still, since she had agreed to help me, she intended to do so properly.

Advanced Lightning Magic: Divine Judgement.

Advanced Explosive Magic: Destruction.

Advanced Ice Magic: Permafrost.

Advanced Fire Magic: Scorching Sphere.

Advanced Light Magic: Light Cutter.

Advanced Dark Magic: Nightmare Swamp.

Advanced Earth Magic: Ant Hole.

Advanced Wind Magic: Eye of the Typhoon.

Learning even one of those spells would place a magician at a level respected by all others.

Unless you were personally struck by them, it was impossible to truly understand the flow and principles of that magic power.

I smirked. Reckless or not, there was no surer way.

I closed my eyes briefly, then opened them again. The smile vanished.

Clenching my teeth and tensing my body, I stared back at her with unwavering resolve.

I tightened my grip on the dagger.

***

"You have all done an excellent job preparing for the festival. Finally, starting tomorrow, the Grand Crestle Festival will begin."

"Let us continue working closely with the school to ensure that no unfortunate incidents occur."

Obel Hall, a grand structure built beside the student square, was a relatively new building.

It had been constructed to provide a workspace for the student council, whose authority and responsibilities continued to grow. As such, its interior consisted primarily of offices.

In the conference room, where all the council members were gathered, Student Council President Tanya addressed them through voice amplification magic.

The gist of her speech was simple: they had worked hard over the past month, and now they should enjoy the festival while continuing to fulfill their duties.

The student council members applauded and cheered. The hellish preparation period had finally ended. As long as the festival ran smoothly over the next week, they would soon return to their normal lives.

"Time really flew by."

Ziggs muttered to himself as he leaned against the back wall with his arms crossed.

The past month had kept him so busy that he barely had time to breathe.

While attending classes, he had reviewed the details of every club's activities, mediated conflicts, provided support where needed, and coordinated schedules.

At the same time, he couldn't neglect Elka. With how busy he had been, he often wished he had two bodies. He was grateful that Elka willingly followed him around during council work.

"Ziggs, you worked hard during the preparations."

Tanya stepped down from the podium amid applause, smoothing her skirt as she spoke.

After thanking everyone, she headed toward Trix Hall with Anise for her next appointment.

"No, you're the one who's worked the hardest, Tanya. From now on, our responsibilities are what really matter."

"Haah… That's true. In any case, please make sure the committee members don't relax too much. His Majesty Emperor Kroel will be visiting personally."

"Have you finished reviewing his schedule?"

"Yes. He'll arrive at dawn in a few days but won't enter Silvenia until after lunch. He'll attend several events, give a speech, and then watch the joint competition. Pelbrain will handle lunch, while Klenic and Anise inspect the route."

"In that case, I'll review the competition schedule one last time."

"Please review the participant list and announce the details so everything proceeds smoothly."

"Understood, Student Council President."

Ziggs nodded with a smirk.

"By the way, you've been looking good lately. Dividing the workload seems to have helped."

"Yes… Organizing the workflow definitely made things easier. Structuring work properly is harder than it looks."

"We're all still learning. It's just a shame you haven't had time to catch up with people. Your brother will be facing Daike, right?"

"I'll confirm his schedule once more."

After that, Ziggs fell into thought.

Everyone around him had been busy.

Tanya always was.

Taylee was consumed by training.

Ayla had locked herself in the library, researching the Great Sage Silvenia—Elka had told him so.

Yennekar Palerover was struggling to act like an aristocrat after becoming a baroness. Ziggs had seen her practicing strange poses and muttering to herself. Approaching her would only kill her with embarrassment, so he avoided her quietly.

Lucy Mayreel had been spending more time at Ed's camp than at school. He had heard she looked exhausted lately—which was strange, given her immense magic power.

Lortel, on the other hand, seemed brighter than ever. The Elte Company was profiting heavily from festival preparations, and Ziggs had been seeing her frequently at Obel Hall.

Clevius was the only one who seemed worse than usual. Always gloomy, he had become even more withdrawn. When asked, he blamed issues with his house—nothing new for him.

Despite his workload, Ziggs tried to keep track of his friends.

"Once the school finalizes Emperor Kroel's route and schedule, we'll proceed. Don't go hiding somewhere again—I'll need your signature immediately."

"I've graduated from hiding in dark places. What do you think of me?"

"Weren't you hiding under a bathroom cabinet yesterday?"

"…Did Anise tell you?"

"Senir found you. She even injured her ankle."

"…I should apologize."

Tanya fidgeted awkwardly but soon regained her composure.

"Please prepare for tomorrow's opening ceremony. I'll finish preparations for the competition."

Ziggs straightened up and smiled. "I'll go check on the contestants."

"Good work. Submit your report through Anise."

He nodded and left the hall.

***

"He should be by the northern cliffs. After school, he always goes there and doesn't return until late."

Ed wasn't at the camp when Ziggs arrived.

Yennekar, sitting by the campfire, told him Ed's location with a worried look. After thanking her, Ziggs headed north through the forest.

Though the northern forest was vast and unpaved, his daily jogging helped him navigate part of it. The farther north he went, the more unfamiliar it became.

This was Ed Rothstaylor's domain.

Eventually, the forest opened into a meadow—and Ziggs froze.

The residual magic power in the air was overwhelming.

"Oh my God…"

A massive rock stood at the edge of the meadow.

Leaning against it was Ed Rothstaylor, blood dripping from his battered body.

The ground around him was devastated. Grass was torn apart. Trees had been uprooted.

"E-Ed…"

"Oh… Ziggs…"

Ed opened his eyes. He wasn't unconscious—just resting.

"I was… training…"

His clothes were shredded, but what stunned Ziggs was the magic power he felt.

It was on an entirely different level.

And the look in Ed's eyes—sharp, feral.

'Beware of wolves covered in scars.'

Those who survived countless near-death experiences were far more dangerous.

Ed slowly stood. His magic power far exceeded that of a student.

Surviving Lucy Mayreel's attacks alone was impossible for most.

Yet through relentless training—borderline self-abuse—Ed had reached a level where he could endure her magic.

That was why he was always on the brink of death.

And why he now possessed the power to wield advanced magic.

Even Ziggs swallowed hard.

"Ah… It's almost time for the festival…"

Ed wiped the blood from his face.

"I should… clean up… and get ready…"

Those born without talent had only one path.

To smash their heads against the wall until it broke.

That was the fate of those born as duds.

-x-X-x-

During the Grand Crestle Festival, outsiders were allowed to enter Acken Island and the academy.

However, there weren't many people who traveled all the way to Acken Island—located on the southwestern edge of the Empire—just to see the school's festival. Most citizens within the empire were busy with their own lives and primarily enjoyed festivals in their own respective places of residence.

After all, the festival was a moment when the entirety of the Kroel Empire gathered together in bliss. Of course, the level of excitement differed depending on the region.

In a countryside like Pulan, Yennekar's hometown, it was so remote that the energy of the festival never fully reached it. And in the Holy Father Building, where Saint Clarice came from, a solemn atmosphere had to be maintained year-round, so they didn't enter a particularly festive mood either.

Still, because Silvenia Academy was filled with young people from all over the empire, the festival held there was rather grand. Thus, those who had some spare time and lived near Zahul's frontier territory tended to visit.

They might have been accustomed to Silvenia from living nearby, but there was no other landmark as large as the academy in the southern part of the Kroel Empire. So, if one couldn't afford to travel all the way to the empire's capital, going to Silvenia Academy instead to partake in the festive atmosphere wasn't a bad idea.

Of course, all of that only applied to those who could actually afford to enjoy the festival.

Most of the visitors tended to be wealthy aristocrats or members of influential households who sent their children to Silvenia Academy.

"Thank you for visiting Silvenia. The accommodations for visitors are at Dex Hall, so you may leave your luggage there. Melik, the manager of accommodations, will inform you of the details. If you head toward the outskirts of the education district, where Dex Hall is located, and continue toward the commercial district, you will see an information board."

"O-Oh. Th-Thank you."

Orte Palerover stepped down onto the pier, with his wife Saila following shortly after.

They both worked on a ranch where taking even a single day off was impossible. Their daughter, Yennekar Palerover, would never have imagined that her parents had come all the way to Silvenia Academy.

They wouldn't have been able to make the trip without the help of the kind villagers of Torren, who agreed to take care of their ranch while they were away.

Since a festival was taking place, Silvenia was allowing outsiders to enter the campus. It was finally time to verify the facts behind all the letters that had been arriving at the ranch recently.

If Yennekar really had become a baroness and raised her family to the status of nobility, then it was only right for her parents to come and confirm it in person.

It just so happened to be the perfect time to visit Acken Island. After deciding on what to do, they rushed straight there.

"U-Um… Where is Ophelis Hall? A-Are you a student…? You're a student, right?"

"You may address me informally. I am Ziggs Eiffelstein, an executive member of the student council. At the moment, I'm in charge of guiding visitors arriving from the pier. If you speak with any other student council members throughout the school, they will also gladly assist you."

Ziggs, who had been standing near the pier checking documents, looked up at their question and turned his gaze toward the school.

"Most facilities within the education and commercial districts are open to outsiders, but… Ophelis Hall is strictly forbidden. It's a place frequently visited by powerful nobles and influential figures. Is there something you need there?"

"U-Um… Our daughter lives there…"

Yennekar Palerover hadn't told her family that she had been expelled from Ophelis Hall and was living in a cabin in the forest. She didn't want them to worry.

Thus, the Palerovers—who believed Yennekar was still living in Ophelis Hall—wanted to go there to meet her.

"Hm… Due to personal circumstances, I'm currently living in Lorail Hall, but I used to reside in Ophelis Hall as well. If you tell me your child's name, I can personally contact Ophelis Hall and inform them."

"Ohh… Yennekar Palerover… Our daughter is a good child, and she was even the top student for a few years… Hahaha… Saying it myself feels a bit embarrassing…"

"…The third-year student Yennekar?"

Ziggs, who had been checking his documents, paused.

"Hm… I'm actually quite close with her. What a coincidence."

"Oh! You're friends with our Yennekar?"

"Yes. She's very kind. We came to know each other after getting involved in various things."

At that moment, Orte's eyes, fixed on Ziggs, began to sparkle.

With his clean and reliable appearance, Ziggs seemed like the ideal son-in-law—especially to parents who had lived their entire lives in the countryside.

Honestly, the Palerovers would have been fine with anyone as long as they worked hard. Seeing such a dependable young man, imagining he might be the person Yennekar cared for, they couldn't help but smile.

Orte grabbed Ziggs's hands, his eyes shining.

"Are you really close with Yennekar…?!"

"…Yes?"

"Our Yennekar is very kind and sweet, right?! What do you think of her after getting to know her…?!"

Ziggs stared at Orte in bewilderment.

"Wh-What are you suddenly saying…?"

"Don't you agree that our Yennekar is destined for great things?!"

"I appreciate your thoughts, but I already have a lover. And to begin with, Yennekar is someone far beyond my reach."

"I-Is that so…? I suppose Yennekar is in a position where she can choose any man she wants at the academy…!"

"That's a peculiar way to put it, but there are certainly many students who admire her. She has a great personality, outstanding talent, and is quite attractive. Even her underclassmen speak highly of her…"

Ziggs stopped himself, unsure how much more he should say.

Talking further about Yennekar's personal life might cross a line. He had no idea how much she shared with her family about her life at Silvenia.

Judging by the situation, she was clearly hiding the fact that she'd been expelled from Ophelis Hall. If Ziggs misspoke, Yennekar could end up in serious trouble.

"I see… Our dear Yennekar…! Sob…"

Seeing Orte's satisfied expression, Ziggs realized he didn't need to say anything more. No parent disliked hearing praise about their child. He decided to leave the rest to Yennekar herself.

Watching Orte and Saila gave Ziggs a strange feeling.

Yennekar was living in a camp after being expelled from Ophelis Hall. Even after becoming a baroness, she struggled to suppress her commoner habits, causing unnecessary trouble. And on top of that, she lived in close proximity to a man.

Just imagining how her parents might react terrified him.

He wanted to warn Yennekar in advance, but he had no idea where she was. With the festival ongoing, he was overwhelmed with responsibilities himself.

"We were just curious about Yennekar's life at the academy and wanted to hear some recent news… But meeting one of her close acquaintances as soon as we arrived—how wonderful is that?"

"When you say recent news, do you mean her being granted the title of baroness and an estate?"

"Yes… I've spent my entire life milking cows, so suddenly becoming the father of a baroness… There's a lot to adjust to. I also heard that a young man from House Rothstaylor helped her greatly. Since we're here, we should greet him as well!"

"I-Is that so…?"

"I don't know if he'll like it, but I slaughtered one of the highest-quality cows from our ranch as a gift…"

"Honey, since he's from House Rothstaylor, I'm not sure that kind of gift is appropriate…"

"I told you, Saila. Nobody hates food! From our position, he's our benefactor. It's only right to show him proper respect! He's the one who elevated us commoners to nobility and gave us land!"

Orte smiled broadly, wrapping his muscular arm around Saila's shoulders.

"Since we want to meet both our daughter and the young man of House Rothstaylor… Where do you think we should head first for the fastest chance?"

They could meet both of them at the North Forest camp.

But Ziggs couldn't possibly say that.

Cold sweat ran down his back.

"R-Right now… I-I'm not sure… Ha ha… Ha ha ha…"

***

The grand opening ceremony held in the Student Square came to an end.

Faculty members gathered throughout the square, using magic to create a spectacular display.

The sheer number of visitors and students was so immense that it was impossible to see them all at once. The fact that only a handful of faculty members could draw such a massive crowd demonstrated the extent of their abilities.

Cheers erupted as Student Council President Tanya gave her speech. Then, following Deputy Headmistress Rachel's address—delivered in place of Headmaster Obel Forsyth—firecrackers were set off.

Buildings across the education district were decorated, transforming the area into something entirely different from its usual appearance. Stalls lined the streets, bustling with commerce, while outsiders wandered excitedly through Silvenia, which was normally closed to the public.

A stage stood in the center of the Student Square, hosting performances by invited artists and bands. There were also academic presentations by students, small magic shows, and various martial arts contests.

Looking through the festival guide, there were so many attractions that it was impossible to experience them all.

However, not every part of the academy was swept up in the excitement.

A religious ceremony led by Saint Clarice was scheduled later in the cathedral. Even during the festival, there were those who sought spiritual observance. For followers of the Telos Religious Group, being able to see Saint Clarice in person was a tremendous honor.

Clarice would be busy handling the ceremony, and bearing such responsibility surely wasn't easy.

"What about you, Ed…? Your duel isn't until the day after tomorrow. Are you planning to just take care of the camp until then?"

In the crowded Student Square, Yennekar approached me with a smile.

We were standing close together, having been grouped by grade level.

Just because the festival was underway didn't mean the camp could be neglected. There were still matters I needed to handle, and I couldn't abandon my training either.

Yennekar seemed to understand that, which was why she asked.

"I'm going to rest for now. Though I still need to handle the essentials."

"Really…? My underclassmen in the Elementalism Society are holding an academic presentation, so I'm heading there first. I'll probably look around the stalls in the afternoon…!"

Yennekar fidgeted, glancing around before stepping closer and whispering.

"Then… would you like to walk around with me in the afternoon…?"

"Sure. Since I worked in Assistant Professor Cleoh's lab before, I should stop by and pay her a visit."

Walking around with Yennekar would be far more enjoyable than going alone, so I happily agreed.

I planned to return to the camp in the morning to finish my tasks, then visit Trix Hall around lunchtime to see Assistant Professor Cleoh. After that, I could explore the stalls and have dinner with Yennekar.

"That's great. You've been so busy lately that I was worried you wouldn't get to relax during the festival. Honestly… you've seemed rather impatient recently."

"Impatient?"

"Yes… the way you train, and… what you told me about Velbrok last time… It feels like you've been growing more restless."

Even though I had shared most of the situation with Yennekar, there was still something I hadn't mentioned.

Something Ayla told me by the campfire before the festival.

Remembering it stirred a sense of urgency within me.

"Yennekar. Sit here with me for a moment."

She tilted her head but complied, sitting beside me.

All business within the Imperial Household had concluded, and it was nearly time for Emperor Kroel to tour the empire.

During the Grand Crestle Festival, it was tradition for the emperor to visit major institutions across the empire. Since this inspection occurred only once every four years, everyone under the Imperial Household had to remain vigilant.

Princess Selah walked through the corridors of the luxurious Rose Palace.

It was nearly time for her to act—traveling alongside Emperor Kroel during his inspection. It was a rare opportunity to gain a decisive advantage in the struggle for the throne.

Princess Penia was at Silvenia and couldn't accompany them. Meanwhile, Princess Persica had chosen to remain within the Imperial Household.

Selah couldn't understand Persica's reasoning for abandoning such a valuable opportunity, but she had no time to dwell on it.

As she continued down the corridor with her attendants, she encountered Persica, who stood waiting with a single servant.

"Oh, you seem rather busy these days, Persica."

"You must be busy as well, Selah."

Though they exchanged smiles, their attendants swallowed nervously.

The rivalry for succession was nearing its conclusion. Emperor Kroel had implied that the competition would end after the festival.

Selah's political fate hinged on this journey.

"I heard you're going to Silvenia as well. I suppose you'll see Penia there. Please give her my regards."

"Of course. Since we're sisters by blood, I'm sure she'll be delighted."

"You're quite straightforward these days."

"It's a necessary skill."

A tense atmosphere lingered between them.

Penia openly opposed Selah, while Persica kept her distance due to Selah's overwhelming influence.

"This time… I'll take proper 'care' of Penia. I'll ensure she focuses solely on her studies and stays out of politics."

Selah smiled. To Persica, she looked like a lion intoxicated by power.

"I wouldn't be so certain. Penia has many allies… and one of them is rather troublesome."

"You mean Ed Rothstaylor?"

"It seems you've thought the same."

"What kind of emperor would I be if I couldn't control a single member of a declining house? This time, I'll nip it in the bud."

At Silvenia Academy, status mattered less than ability.

"I'll show Father just how different my followers are."

"..."

***

[Princess Selah has high expectations for this duel.]

Reading the letter from the head of House Elpelan, Daike frowned.

[Whenever House Elpelan stumbled, she stood at the forefront as our benefactor. Thus, we cannot afford to appear inferior to House Rothstaylor, which stands in political opposition to us.]

In the combat department's observation room—amid the festive atmosphere—Daike let out a deep sigh.

He recalled the figure of a young man.

The prodigy of House Rothstaylor, who had risen at an astonishing pace and claimed the title of top student in the third-year magic department.

He was talented, diligent, and humble—a man who fulfilled his duties without flaunting his accomplishments.

Compared to him, Daike's potential felt insignificant.

[House Elpelan places its faith in you, Daike. You must win this duel to bring honor to Princess Selah. Our future depends on this. I regret failing to recognize your efforts sooner. However, in this duel, upon which our future rests, I ask that you achieve great results.]

If Daike lost, he would be blamed without hesitation.

The praise rang hollow, but Daike folded the letter calmly and slipped it into his pocket.

"Daike."

A worried underclassman approached.

"Will they excommunicate you if you lose?"

"They probably will. It's the easiest way to avoid responsibility."

"Damn… That's awful. Then you should—"

"Watch your language, Bellun."

Despite everything, House Elpelan had given him shelter and sustenance.

"Either way, I'm not fighting for politics or my house."

"Then…?"

"It's simple. I'll give the duel everything I have."

Tomorrow, Princess Selah would arrive. The duel would follow the day after.

Daike smiled bitterly and merged into the crowd.

***

"At first, I thought what you said was absurd. But after calming down and thinking it through, I began to suspect there was a reason you went so far to provoke Taylee."

Ayla Triss removed her hood, her expression resolute.

She had spent days searching the library.

Even during the festival, she locked herself away, consumed by her research.

"Would you like some coffee?"

"No… thank you."

Taylee visited her daily, worried by her fixation.

Even amid celebration, Ayla remained buried in ancient texts, sweating as she searched relentlessly.

"Are you worried about Ayla?"

Elka approached Taylee gently.

"She's done this before, but never to this extent. If only she'd tell me what she's looking for…"

"I'm sure she has her reasons. Ayla always thinks of you."

"What books is she reading?"

Elka hesitated, then whispered.

"Celestial magic… and records of the Holy Blue Dragon sealed long ago."

Taylee stiffened.

Velbrok.

"And lore regarding the Great Sage Silvenia."

Ayla stared at her notes, deep in thought.

"The Great Sage Silvenia used Celestial Magic to maintain Velbrok's seal eternally. A spell that should never weaken over time."

Ed's face across the campfire was vivid in her memory.

"If someone is to release that seal… it would have to be the same person who cast it."

"If Silvenia were still alive… what would you think?"

***

Yennekar's face stiffened.

Even she couldn't easily accept what I had said.

, Final Act.

In the original story, the Great Sage Silvenia was merely background lore.

Yet if someone truly stood behind the curtain…

It could only be her.

If she truly released Velbrok's seal…

Then finding her would end everything.

That possibility burned into my mind.

And now, it was time to uncover the truth.

-x-X-x-

"The Great Sage Silvenia… is trying to resurrect the Holy Blue Dragon Velbrok…?"

"This is all just a hypothesis without any evidence. However… there is some credibility."

Ayla Triss was a girl who wasn't particularly strong in terms of firepower. However, she possessed an incredible amount of knowledge in magical academia.

In fact, she even had a high resonance with Celestial Magic. That, combined with her vast knowledge, made her an ideal candidate for Professor Glast to use as a sacrifice.

I wiped my face as I calmly organized my thoughts.

Thinking back on it, when finished and the credits started to roll… it showed various images of the characters' lives further in the future after graduating.

Each of the characters was shown living their own lives now that the storyline was over. As such scenes passed by, at the very end, Ayla appeared with the title of "Great Sage" next to her name.

A genius scholar who was granted the title of Great Sage after Silvenia. The Great Sage Ayla Triss.

At the time, I thought it was simply meant to show that "Ayla achieved great academic success"… and nothing more. That was because all of the other characters were depicted in a similar way.

However, if Ayla had actually discovered something about the Great Sage Silvenia…

Or if she had truly followed and fulfilled the will of the Great Sage Silvenia…

Or if had intentionally glossed over that part…

The companion of Swordmaster Taylee McLaure—Ayla Triss. What truth did she discover about the Great Sage Silvenia?

All of that had happened completely off the main stage.

The sequence of events that took place on stage was slowly running out.

As we approached the final act, it had become impossible for me to predict anything based on the original timeline. Rather, the hidden truths beneath the storyline were beginning to surface.

The shadow of a young scholar's back that had only ever appeared in the setting books—the girl with white hair tied back in black ribbons—was now starting to step onto the main stage.

"There is no way to verify whether that's true or not right now. After all, how are we supposed to investigate someone whose traces disappeared from the world hundreds of years ago? However… Ayla Triss might somehow figure it out."

"Y-You mean Taylee's lover?"

"Yeah. If I'm right, she will become the next Great Sage."

I came to the reasonable conclusion that she must have somehow come into contact with the Great Sage Silvenia.

After all, Ayla was the first to propose such a theory.

All that time, I had been trapped in a prison called "the original timeline," blinded by the thought of somehow defeating Velbrok. But… she had chosen a different path.

"I'm sure she'll find something. And when she does, I have to be ready to move immediately. That's why I need to get even stronger."

"That's why… you seem more impatient."

"The major event I've been preparing for is finally starting to reveal itself."

I sat still, clenching my hands and teeth, then spoke quietly as I frowned.

"Honestly, I'm nervous. I'm only human, after all."

The reason I'd been learning advanced magic through being attacked by Lucy was because I could genuinely feel the catastrophe drawing near.

"Ed…"

All of the students were slowly leaving the student square to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

The student council members who were cleaning up the chairs glanced our way with puzzled expressions. It seemed they wanted to finish their tasks quickly and enjoy the festival themselves, which explained their hurried movements.

Sitting beside each other, Yennekar and I remained silent for a while longer.

"Ed… It might sound strange to say this, but I'm happy."

"…What?"

"I don't think you realize it yourself. But over the past few years, even though you've taken breaks and rested occasionally… it still felt like you were caught up in something enormous, always being chased."

Yennekar smiled shyly as she reminisced, almost as if she were whispering to herself.

"When you sharpened your bow, built the cabin, went hunting, or sat quietly by the campfire… even when you looked calm and expressionless while taking care of things… somehow, I knew. You were running forward with all your strength, as if a knife were chasing you."

Yennekar, sitting and gazing blankly at the sky, seemed lost in her memories.

"Once all of this is over, you'll be able to get your diploma… and finally stop running."

"…Yennekar."

"Since I grew up in a secluded countryside, I knew nothing beyond an open ranch and towering mountains. That's why I don't truly understand how hard it must be to live a life like yours, where you're constantly running forward. Still, I can imagine."

I understood what Yennekar was trying to convey.

All of the emotions she felt while standing beside me and watching over me all that time couldn't be summed up by simple words like worry or empathy.

"…I'm sure it must have been very difficult."

"…I can't deny that."

"If dealing with Velbrok really is the end of everything, then afterward… let's stop running."

It was a life that felt as though bullets were constantly flying past.

It must have been heartbreaking for Yennekar to watch me live with a knife perpetually at my throat, walking across a never-ending tightrope where a single misstep meant death.

"Instead, let's walk."

"..."

"But until that moment, I'll run by your side."

Yennekar spoke with a shy smile. Then, she straightened her expression and addressed me more directly.

"So… our top priority is dealing with the Holy Blue Dragon Velbrok, just like you said."

"But right now, there's nothing we can do about it. That's why it's better to handle everything else first. And Yennekar, there's a lot you need to take care of right now as well."

After I said that, Yennekar shook her head and replied firmly.

"Your situation is the priority right now. When the time comes, I'll ask you for help too—but for now, we need to focus on your work. Of course, I have many things I need to handle as well, but… what could possibly be more important than what you're dealing with right now?!"

"Lady Yennekar, you were here."

"Eeek! …Bell?"

Yennekar screamed like a startled animal and spun around to see Bell Maya standing there.

"Thankfully, I heard in advance that there would be a gathering here in the student square. I see you were here as well, Young Master Ed."

"You must be busy with the festival. What brings you here?"

"Well… I could have had someone deliver the news, but I felt it would be better to make time and speak with you in person."

"For you to come directly…?! What happened, Bell?"

As Bell answered, I saw Yennekar's face gradually turn pale blue. It was a strangely fascinating sight.

"Lady Yennekar's parents are currently at Ophelis Hall."

***

Orte and Saila Palerover were under the impression that Yennekar was still living in Ophelis Hall.

Bell Maya quickly arrived at that conclusion after seeing them visit Ophelis Hall and ask to be guided to Yennekar Palerover's room.

Given Yennekar's personality, there was no way she could bluntly tell her parents, "I got expelled from the dormitory, so now I live with a boy my age in the forest."

Regardless, Orte and Saila shouldn't have been able to leave Pulan because of the ranch, so Yennekar had always avoided the topic and never worried too deeply about it.

Bell, having accurately grasped the situation, first led them to a separate room to wait. Meanwhile, she had another empty room quickly furnished with simple school uniforms and daily necessities to make it appear lived-in. It wasn't particularly difficult.

After that, she guided them inside, introducing it as Yennekar's room. Once they sat down to wait, she excused herself, saying she would go call Yennekar.

All of the senior maids who witnessed Bell's improvisation were left in complete awe of her competence.

However, even though Bell Maya's response was nearly flawless… Yennekar Palerover's dreadful acting skills remained unchanged. She would be of absolutely no help in this situation.

"D-Daddy?! Wh-Why are you here? What about the ranch?"

Sitting across from them on the sofa in the well-decorated room, Yennekar could barely form coherent sentences as her vision spun and her breathing grew shallow.

"Oh my, our sweet Yennekar. It was worth surprising you just to see that reaction…! And since it's the Grand Crestle Festival, it was the perfect time to ask you about all those letters that keep arriving at the ranch about you becoming a baroness."

At Saila's words, Yennekar remembered something important.

Of course, she should have explained those letters to her parents. Even if she couldn't do so in person due to the distance, she could have at least written back.

"R-Right…! I should have explained it. But I've been so busy lately that it slipped my mind. I'm sorry."

"That's alright, Yennekar. We're all so proud of you. We also wanted to see what your school life was like. Everyone here seems so proud of you. As your father, I'm so happy…! Keheuk…!"

Orte Palerover, despite his burly frame and stern appearance, turned into a doting father in front of his beloved daughter.

Seeing how highly she was regarded, he became so emotional that he could hardly speak.

"Living alone in such a luxurious room… our daughter truly is incredible…!"

"Honey… don't cry… or I'll start crying too…"

"I'm… normally not a man who sheds tears, but… keheuk… damn it…"

Watching them tremble with tears in their eyes, Yennekar froze.

Judging by their words, personalities, and the neatly wrapped gift beside them, she could already guess what was coming next.

"Anyway, we heard that a young man from House Rothstaylor played a huge role in all of this. Since he's treated us so kindly, we can't just sit by and do nothing."

"That's right! We need to meet him and give our thanks! And what you said last time, Yennekar… about that man—we want to see him at least once. Ohohoho!"

How shocked would they be to discover those two were the same person? Once they returned home, it would take less than three days for rumors to flood the entire village.

Just imagining it was terrifying. Yennekar forced a smile.

"O-Okay! But he's extremely busy, so I don't know if he'll be able to meet you!"

"I see."

"Y-Yeah! It'll be really, really, really hard to meet him! And there's already so much to do during the festival! Since you came all this way, I should show you around! There are academic conferences, concerts, and so much food! We can even watch Princess Selah's arrival at Silvenia and the Joint Competition…! That's right, Ed— I mean, Young Master Ed—is participating in the Joint Competition this time."

"Really?"

"I see… I suppose he wouldn't have time to spare for people like us. Still, I wish we could at least give him this gift…"

"Just seeing him during the Joint Competition would be an honor…!"

Yennekar's head throbbed.

Rumors about her relationship with Ed had already spread throughout the academy. If she didn't keep her parents close at all times, she was certain something would slip out.

With the festival ongoing, students were likely too busy to gossip. If she worked hard enough, she could at least create good memories before sending her parents home.

Yennekar steeled herself and gathered her resolve.

I can do it.

I can do it…!!!!

***

"I can do iiit!"

The shout of Wade Callamore, the first-year combat department's top student, echoed through the waiting room.

The duel between the third and fourth years would serve as the final climax of the Joint Dueling Competition.

Compared to that match—which would be held on a special stage personally attended by Emperor Kroel and Princess Selah—the first- and second-year matches received far less attention.

That was only natural. Most visitors wanted to see duels between senior students, so priority was given to the third and fourth years.

Still, that didn't mean the first- and second-year students took their matches any less seriously.

Unfortunately, Wade had drawn an especially unlucky opponent.

While many people eagerly awaited the duel between the top third- and fourth-year students, Ed and Daike…

The match between the top first- and second-year students—Wade and Lucy—was already considered decided.

"I'm a… genius… I'm a genius…"

Wade had been hailed as the heir to House Callamore his entire life. On top of that, his loyalty to Princess Penia weighed heavily on his shoulders.

A top combat department student with white hair and sharp features, Wade entered Silvenia with overwhelming ambition.

However, he soon realized the gap between himself and monsters like Ziggs Eiffelstein and Ed Rothstaylor.

As his sense of superiority crumbled, so did his confidence. From that point on, he immersed himself in training without arrogance. Even so, he was deathly afraid of his scheduled match against Lucy Mayreel.

The first- and second-year duels were nearing their end. Although no one from the Imperial Household had arrived yet, prominent figures such as Deputy Headmistress Rachel and Head Dean McDowell were present.

He couldn't afford to make a fool of himself in front of so many powerful individuals.

But his opponent was Lucy Mayreel.

Even as he tried to stabilize himself through sheer self-hypnosis, Wade knew the truth.

No matter how talented he was with a sword, he stood no chance against Lucy Mayreel. That much was obvious without even fighting her.

"Wade. Don't be too nervous. Just focus on giving it your best."

"Daike."

Daike Elpelan, a fellow combat department student, patted Wade on the shoulder. However, it wasn't much consolation.

The experience of being crushed and helplessly falling before someone far more talented…

Daike had endured that more than anyone else. Seeing Wade tremble, he saw his own reflection.

Through the iron bars, Wade looked toward Lucy, who had already entered the arena. She stood there drowsily.

She had only come because participation was mandatory. Judging by the wide yawn she let out, she clearly wanted to finish quickly and take a nap.

From the start, Lucy didn't view this as a duel. To her, it was merely a task to be completed as efficiently as possible.

Clevius Nortondale had once charged at that monster with his sword.

That wasn't a ceremonial duel with safety measures. Lucy had been out of her mind with rage, and Clevius had still risked his life to face her.

Compared to that, Wade trembling in a duel layered with safety enchantments felt unbearably pathetic.

"Do you think you're pathetic, Wade? Scared and trembling?"

Daike suddenly spoke up, trying to light a spark within him.

"…Yes."

Wade answered honestly.

He trusted Daike Elpelan. No matter what he said, Daike wouldn't mock him. He was a dependable upperclassman.

Wade expected stern encouragement—words like Don't be afraid. You can do it.

"I know. I'd be fucking terrified too. If I were you, my legs wouldn't stop shaking."

Instead, Daike swore and spoke bleakly.

Wade's eyes widened.

"Clevius clenched his fists and charged at that monster. That's not something anyone can do. How is that any different from jumping into a pit of flames?"

Rather than encouragement, Daike's words instilled fear. Wade was stunned.

"Y-You think so too… Daike…?"

"How could I be any different? Facing a monster like that, how could your legs not tremble?"

"…I thought I was brave. Able to charge into tens of thousands of troops without fear… I wanted to be like my father, Magnus…"

Wade remembered Ziggs Eiffelstein's sword at his neck.

He had been nothing more than a coward intoxicated by victory.

True courage was fulfilling one's duty despite fear.

"Not feeling fear doesn't make you brave. It makes you reckless. Your father commands a massive corps—do you think he doesn't know fear?"

Daike rejected Wade's words.

"Bravery is acting despite fear. Don't try to erase it. Face it and overcome it."

Never backing down after defeat—that was Daike Elpelan's way of life.

"Daike…"

"Everyone expects Lucy Mayreel to win. That's only natural. But if you can trade blows with her—even land one solid hit—people will see you differently."

"…Alright."

Accepting his fear, Wade stood.

Leaving the dim waiting room, he entered the brightly lit arena to applause.

Lucy Mayreel stood there with a drowsy expression.

Wade inhaled deeply.

No one cared about the result. Everyone was waiting for the seniors' duel the next day.

A stage without expectations—there was no better place to shock the world.

"Lucy Mayreel."

Wade unsheathed his sword.

Even if you lived as a coward… even if you always ran from fear…

There were moments when a man had to fight back against the world.

Like Commander Magnus, standing firm before tens of thousands.

"You should prepare yourself."

Wade even issued a provocation.

Lucy merely muttered about jerky while adjusting her hat.

"Even if my strength can't match yours… my resolve—and my refusal to yield—I'll show you!"

"Begin!"

Booooom!

Crash! Clang! Clang!

In an instant, the arena filled with light.

Advanced Lightning Magic—Divine Judgment.

Three consecutive strikes.

Wade was flung into the arena wall and lost consciousness immediately.

"…Crap…! I didn't control my power…!"

Lucy's face turned pale.

After constantly fighting Ed, her control had dulled. Ed was one of the few who could withstand her magic, even if only by gritting his teeth through the pain.

She had used that same level of power on Wade.

Fortunately, his injuries didn't appear life-threatening.

Lucy broke out in a cold sweat and stuffed jerky into her mouth.

"…Sorry."

The crowd roared as Lucy apologized and hurried out of the arena.

Applause followed—for Wade, who lay unconscious.

Watching the overwhelming gap in talent, Daike Elpelan smiled bitterly.

Some differences could never be closed.

"Are you going to use me in your duel?"

Merilda sat atop a pile of books.

The cabin interior was filled with them, a situation she found very satisfying. Most had been brought by Lortel.

"Of course. He's a difficult opponent to beat without a high-ranking spirit."

"It's been a while since I've been able to go all-out. I hear they call him the King of Power—able to destroy entire buildings with a single punch."

"At the very least, we can't take it lightly. By the way…"

Back at the cabin, I fixed the door hinge, checked supplies, and disposed of spoiled food.

After spending time on magic engineering upstairs, I prepared to head to Trix Hall.

Before that, I turned to Merilda.

"As far as I know, you're the only one who ever met the Great Sage Silvenia in person."

...

"So I want your opinion."

Merilda had met Silvenia—and been close to her.

After all, her human form mirrored Silvenia's appearance.

"The Great Sage Silvenia, who asked you to protect this forest long ago."

"Are you searching for my old friend? She's become quite famous."

"You already know what I'm going to ask, don't you?"

Merilda knew Silvenia better than anyone.

Was the Great Sage Silvenia truly responsible for releasing Velbrok's seal?

"That's impossible."

Merilda denied it instantly.

"She loved this school more than anyone. She would never risk destroying it herself."

"You sound confident."

"We were close friends."

She had watched Acken Island evolve from nothing.

"That girl was eccentric, but she'd never harm this place."

...

"I don't give credit to humans easily. But Silvenia was worthy of my respect."

Merilda rarely spoke so seriously.

"There's something I should tell you, Ed. A story no history book records."

"The truth behind Silvenia's death… you haven't heard it, have you?"

***

A long time ago.

When Acken Island was nothing but towering mountains and lush forests, a young girl was exiled there and built an academy.

A white-haired girl who smiled proudly, hands on her hips, gazing at the stars.

That was Merilda's testimony.

-x-X-x-

The Great Sage Silvenia Robester was a genius who seemed perfect.

Born as the daughter of a moderately wealthy translator in the empire's capital, Kroelon, it took her less than a month to learn how to read and write the Empire's official language.

At the age of seven, when other children her age were running around in gardens, grumbling about their parents, Silvenia was busy reading large magic books nearly the size of her torso. By the time she was baptized at the age of nine, she had already taught herself intermediate elemental magic.

It was at that point that her father—Dexton Robester, a renowned magic book translator—began to feel that his daughter was extraordinary.

After that, he appointed several reputable tutors to teach her. However, most of them quit within only a few months of instructing her. When asked why, the reason was eerie.

At times, Silvenia's behavior was that of a young girl her age. She had a rather cute and innocent appearance and was someone who cried when she scraped her knee or lost her favorite doll… However, the moment she picked up a quill for class, she became a completely different person.

Those eyes of hers that stared at the characters on the blackboard, absorbing knowledge… Were they really the eyes of a thirteen-year-old girl? She was like a beast that devoured all forms of knowledge, constantly staring into her instructors' eyes, as if trying to gnaw at their brains.

In the summer of that year, she looked through months of research done by her monster ecology instructor, only to present them with an entirely new theory regarding monster evolution. Then, later that winter, she pointed out various issues in the reagent manufacturing theory her instructor taught.

At eleven years old, she suddenly wanted to learn swordsmanship. Three months later, she went alone into the mountains with a rapier, returning with a wild deer. A month later, she researched and successfully imbued a spiritual skill into her father's personal bow. That same month, she signed a contract with a mid-ranking spirit.

The following year, she took an interest in alchemy. She then successfully created the Blue Brilliance Reagent and Devil's Red Flower Reagent—things that even famous alchemists struggled to produce.

That summer, she successfully cast the advanced wind magic Eye of the Typhoon… which subsequently blew away the entire fountain in the central square of Kroelon.

At the time, the youngest magician in recorded history capable of using advanced magic was Melgis, the commander of the Magic Knights of the Imperial Household, at age twenty-nine.

When Silvenia did it, she was only twelve.

***

Silvenia awkwardly tapped her fingertips together with a playful expression, as if she had caused a small accident. Dexton, who had gone to pick her up at Kroelon's central square, felt that the time had come.

Looking at the Imperial Army acting defensively toward her, seeing such a young girl use advanced magic to destroy the square as if she couldn't properly control her strength… Their eyes trembled.

It was time to reveal Silvenia's existence to the world.

***

"If you study the positions of the stars, you can see a rather strange flow of magic power. I don't know if there's some kind of causality hidden beneath it, but if you look closely, there do seem to be certain rules. If one were to successfully research it, they might be able to bend the basic rules and principles that build this world. The study of the positions of stars and their flow of magic power… You could call it Celestial Science!"

***

At thirteen, by the decree of Kroel the 2nd, Silvenia Robester became the youngest imperial magician. Such an honor was completely unprecedented in history.

However, no one could complain. At thirteen, she had already anonymously submitted two papers on theories of magic power resonance to the Elemental Research Society. She then accomplished the feat of having both unanimously accepted.

All of the scholars of the Togg Magic Power Society were stunned to learn that such groundbreaking theories—ones that shook their entire perception of magic power response—had come from the mind of a thirteen-year-old girl.

Among them, a few even came to realize the gap in talent between themselves and her, ultimately choosing to leave academia behind.

Silvenia actively received support from the imperial household. She was allowed to live in the grand Lily Palace and was given a laboratory the size of an ordinary house. With magic inks, books, blackboards, chalk, and magic engineering equipment filling the room, she finally began working to prove her theories.

Even though everything in the Kroel Imperial Household was constantly cleaned and maintained, no one dared to even consider entering Silvenia's laboratory to clean it.

To her, Lily Palace and her laboratory had already become her own unique world.

Kroel the 2nd had a good eye for people. He decided that a girl like Silvenia Robester should never be forced into etiquette training. Instead, he actively arranged for her to meet as many scholars as possible.

During that time, experts from various fields came in and out of Lily Palace's laboratory.

Many of the scholars wanted to meet Silvenia in advance, as she was a treasure protected by the Kroel Imperial Family.

Seoin Elpelan of the poisonous House Elpelan. Kelaison Bloomriver, head of House Bloomriver—the Witch's House—and a known troublemaker. The famous backcountry adventurer Dalex Elderbane. And finally, the one known as the researcher of disaster reagents, Jane Velaxus.

As Silvenia spent most of her time immersed in research alone, it was a valuable opportunity for her to expand her personal connections.

It was a time when she met all kinds of people, learned about various research fields, and gradually became brighter in personality. She was influenced by many things and impressed by many people, but the one who stood out the most was the swordsman of House McLaure—Duke.

Duke McLaure.

A descendant of the first swordsman, Luden McLaure… A man who breathed new life into House McLaure, which had long been trapped in darkness.

The stories about the first swordsman Luden that he told Silvenia left a deep impression on her. In particular, the anecdote of his subjugation of the Holy Blue Dragon Velbrok became engraved in her memory, making her even more interested in swordsmanship.

After that, Silvenia began expanding her knowledge of daggers, archery, and spears by borrowing from the royal weapon inventory. Though she was born with a petite body and small muscles, she displayed unrivaled speed when it came to mastering various techniques.

***

When she turned seventeen, she no longer felt like a naïve child, but a proper adult… And she was already capable of using over a dozen ultimate magic spells. Among humans, it was safe to say that no one possessed deeper knowledge of magic than her.

Even scholars with thick beards who had studied magic until the twilight of their lives gladly bowed their heads to her with bright smiles.

From that point on, Silvenia was granted the title of "Great Sage."

Yet Silvenia Robester never acted arrogantly, nor did she show particular interest in elevating her status or accumulating wealth.

While she wore majestic magician robes when attending academic conferences… she was usually running around her laboratory in a leather tunic and shabby cloak, clutching several reagent bottles.

The best place to observe the stars was at the top of the observatory. There, she carefully measured their positions.

As she began to study Celestial Magic in earnest, her laboratory grew increasingly cluttered.

Because Celestial Magic twisted the laws of the world, its research came with many dangers. In particular, since Celestial Magic Power was difficult to control, it often manifested in ways different from the caster's intentions.

As a result, explosions frequently occurred in her laboratory. At first, the imperial household was understanding, given her position and value. However, when the incidents continued for several days straight, their opinions gradually began to change.

Eventually, the imperial household summoned her after each incident, warning her that casualties could occur. Every time, Silvenia merely scratched the back of her head, giggled awkwardly, and apologized.

Even though she could have died, Silvenia shone brighter than ever while studying Celestial Magic.

For Silvenia, no matter how difficult a magic theory or problem was, she could fully understand it and reach a proper answer within a few days.

However, Celestial Magic was different. Because it was a completely unexplored realm for mankind, the more she learned, the more she realized how much remained unknown.

To Silvenia, it was like discovering a new continent filled with unexplored lands—especially for someone who had devoted her entire life to research and knowledge.

Her eyes, shining as she studied Celestial Magic, were brighter than those of any other scholar. She immersed herself in research, believing it was her destiny to study the world's principles and twist laws once thought unbreakable.

Confined to her laboratory in Lily Palace, she achieved accomplishments no one could have imagined.

Everyone within the Lily Palace was in awe of her. Her actions and efforts inspired those around her.

She was destined to stand at the forefront of unprecedented progress in this world. Of that, everyone was certain.

…That was until the following year, when the Crown Prince of the Kroel Imperial House, Lienfell, was caught in the aftermath of an explosion from one of Silvenia's failed experiments.

After that, matters became complicated.

Injuring the Crown Prince during an experiment… It would not have been strange if she had been sentenced to death immediately.

However, Silvenia's immense achievements could not be ignored. Her value was far too great to be discarded lightly.

Therefore, Kroel the 2nd decided to exile her to a secluded area on the empire's outskirts for the time being.

While having passion for research was admirable, being overly consumed by it was unhealthy. That was the lesson he hoped to teach her.

There were many things she could learn by resting in a quiet, isolated area—breathing fresh air and taking a break from her research.

Even though his son was injured, Kroel the 2nd's benevolent nature allowed him to perform one final act of kindness toward Silvenia. Knowing this, she departed for Acken Island with sincere gratitude.

In fact, Silvenia herself had hoped that Acken Island would be chosen as her place of exile.

***

[And that was when I met Silvenia for the first time.]

In a corner of the cabin, Merilda spoke with a soft smile.

[She was always smiling confidently, as if she were proud of being expelled from the imperial household after causing an accident. Back then, I was too busy to care. Do you have any idea how much I suffered because of that girl?]

"What did she do to make you suffer?"

[She constantly came to me for help with her research. There were no proper sources of magic power or research facilities back then, yet she stubbornly continued her experiments. Absolutely stubborn.]

Merilda's recollection of Silvenia began as a simple biography but gradually grew more detailed.

After all, everything she had mentioned so far was something she must have heard from Silvenia herself… But from that point onward, it was what Merilda had personally witnessed.

[She was always coming to me, talking about her visions. Just how ridiculous were those goals of hers… She really was a girl with lofty dreams.]

"Visions?"

[Her dreams.]

Merilda grabbed her hair and tied it into a ponytail, shifting into a brighter tone as if imitating Silvenia.

[Perfect foresight of the future. Changing what has already been decided!]

"…What?"

[Merilda, bypassing the natural flow of time to peek into the future is entirely within a god's domain! But I believe in human potential! The evil god Mebula, the holy god Telos—I'm not interested in relying on gods and living a life that simply accepts a predetermined timeline!]

Was that really how Silvenia spoke when she was alive? With a bright, high-pitched voice, she spoke as if she were focused solely on herself.

[Seeing the future… No, I won't be satisfied with that alone.]

With a smile, she said something utterly absurd.

[I'm going to the future.]

Hearing those words, my expression stiffened.

Just how far ahead had the Great Sage Silvenia been looking back then?

[Am I supposed to simply accept my fate? No matter how miserable it is, I have no intention of surrendering to it.]

"..."

[I will survive, Merilda.]

That girl smiled as she said it. No matter what trials fate placed before her, she would leap over them all.

When she came to Acken Island… she definitely knew something. Was it because of Celestial Magic?

"What… did she mean by that…?"

[I don't know either. She might have just been bluffing. It wasn't the first time she said something ridiculous. She said so many absurd things that I lost count. Maybe she was just trying to comfort herself after being exiled.]

"Hearing that, I think I understand what kind of person she was."

[What's certain is that her life wasn't all sunshine. Even if she were thrown into a desert, she would still smile brightly. But that doesn't mean she didn't know sadness.]

"Yeah. After all, even though she was the Great Sage, she was still human."

[Yeah. Anyway, after she arrived on Acken Island, her way of thinking began to change. She was influenced by many people… But ultimately, it came down to the one person who helped her decide to build a school.]

"One person…? Who?"

The name Merilda spoke was a familiar one.

[Glockt Elderbane.]

Among Silvenia's disciples, he became the most famous archmage. He was also the teacher of Lucy Mayreel, one of the greatest geniuses of this generation.

[After exiling Silvenia to Acken Island, the imperial household didn't want to leave her completely unsupervised. So they immediately assigned her a task. They wanted her to take in children from the lawless region of Kohelton, as well as untalented children who had been expelled from the imperial household.]

"Even though she was the Great Sage, they made her look after kids?"

[Pretty much. But she didn't seem offended. Anyway, she was entrusted with three children. They became the first students of Silvenia Academy. Back then, there weren't even proper buildings—so it was more like a classroom than a school.]

Merilda recited several names from memory.

[Teslin McLaure, Glockt Elderbane, Philona Bloomriver.]

The first three disciples of the Great Sage Silvenia—also known as the first students of Silvenia Academy.

[I don't know if you'll believe this, but… among them, Glockt Elderbane was a complete dud. You couldn't help but wonder if it was even possible for someone to be so untalented. It took him months just to learn a single beginner elemental spell. He was a kid who should never have become a magician.]

"But… I heard Glockt Elderbane was an archmage blessed by the stars since childhood."

[That was just a rumor spread by House Elderbane to elevate their name.]

"…Even knowing such a dangerous truth, you kept silent."

[That's because I'm not interested in the rise and fall of noble houses or politics.]

As if reminiscing, Merilda gently closed her eyes and smiled.

Between an improvised table and blackboard, a girl stood cheerfully with her arms crossed.

A rare genius who would never be born again.

A young boy sat at a shabby table that could barely be called a desk, staring nervously at the blackboard.

A cursed dud born with such poor talent that one would wonder why he ever dreamed of becoming a magician.

It wasn't hard to imagine the two of them facing each other back then. I remained silent as Merilda continued.

[So, why do you think Silvenia built this school?]

"..."

[She never understood what it meant to be a dud. Through teaching Glockt, she learned how vast the gap in talent between people truly was. You'd think she'd simply accept that and move on, but… like I told you. More than anything else, he became the driving force behind Silvenia Academy. He was kind-hearted, tried to act strong, and always did his best. Haah…]

Merilda hopped off a pile of books and trudged over to open a window.

Silvenia Academy's steeple rose high into the sky, visible even from the distant northern forest.

[At some point, it became the most prestigious academy in the empire, where geniuses and budding talents gathered… But it wasn't always like that.]

"Then…"

[That's right. This school was originally built for duds—those without talent.]

Merilda gazed at the distant steeple, recalling the past.

[That's how it started.]

As if the words held little weight, she muttered the end of her sentence before turning back and leaning against the windowsill.

Yennekar Palerover's distraction plan was fairly effective.

For outsiders unfamiliar with the school, the magnificent Silvenia Academy in its festive state was a delightful sight. Everywhere they went, groups of cheerful students gathered, enjoying their youth—it was dazzling to watch.

Yennekar's parents, Orte and Saila, were completely enchanted by the scenery. They happily followed Yennekar as she guided them around.

She had wanted to spend the festival with Ed Rothstaylor, but that wasn't important right now. What mattered most was letting her parents enjoy the celebration without worries—and then sending them home as soon as possible. Of course, she was also determined to avoid letting them meet Ed Rothstaylor.

…Though, in truth, that was the main objective.

Regardless, Yennekar took Orte and Saila to watch magic showcases, magic tool demonstrations, concerts, plays, and countless other spectacles they had never seen before.

After resting in the dormitory, they went right back out the next day. She showed them around the campus, magician demonstrations, the Saint's religious ceremony, and everything else she could gather into a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"Yennekar…! Thanks to you, we're having such a wonderful time! You really are the best daughter in the world…!"

"Hehehe… It's nothing…"

Yennekar replied shyly, scratching her head. As she spoke, she noticed several imperial carriages crossing Mexes Bridge.

"U-Um… so… when… are you going back…?"

"Oh my…! Is that the Kroel Imperial House's royal carriage? This is the first time I've ever seen one!"

"You're right, dear! The emperor and princess must be inside… Does that mean we'll see Princess Selah in person?!"

"What an honor… for simple villagers like us…"

"Don't belittle yourself! We're the parents of a baroness now!"

"Th-That's right… How embarrassing of me… To still think of myself as Orte Palerover, always bowing to others…"

"That's right! You weren't like that before. Don't you remember? I moved to Pulan after seeing how confident and lively you were!"

"You're right! I forgot! I've lived proudly as a man who provides for his family—whether cleaning cow dung or fixing fences! That flame inside me that I had forgotten… It's been reignited… And it's all thanks to our lovely daughter, Yennekar!"

"U-Uh… y-yeah…"

After watching the imperial carriages pass, it was time for the third-year Joint Competition.

"We need to watch that! We can't leave without seeing Young Master Ed at least once!"

Yennekar tied her hair back, lost in thought. With such a large crowd, it should be easy to hide among the spectators.

Still… she couldn't help wanting to ask again. She knew it was impolite, yet she desperately wanted to know when they planned to return home.

Unaware of their daughter's anxiety, Orte and Saila didn't bother hiding their rustic manners. Stuffing bread bought from a street vendor into their mouths, they consulted a guidebook while heading toward the arena seats.

Yennekar followed behind, repeatedly wiping her face. Cold sweat trickled down as panic crept in.

Daike, seated motionlessly in a corner of the dim waiting room, slowly lifted his head.

This was the same place Wade had occupied when he trembled at the thought of fighting Lucy a few days ago. Now… it was Daike sitting there.

A long hallway stretched ahead, ending at an iron gate.

Across the massive arena, he could see the small waiting room on the opposite side. Watching the blond aristocrat seated in the distance, Daike smirked.

The audience seats were packed. At the highest level, seats had been prepared for Emperor Kroel and Princess Selah—though they had yet to arrive.

Defeat wasn't frightening. What Daike truly feared was his fragile confidence.

He reminded himself of that repeatedly, determined to live without regrets.

With that resolve, the King of Power, Daike Elpelan, rose from his seat.

If you were born a man, there were moments when you had to keep moving forward—even while anticipating defeat.

Daike understood that better than anyone else.
