Cherreads

Chapter 32 - Chapter 31

The next hour passed in a blur of controlled chaos that Kreacher had apparently been orchestrating since approximately 4 AM with the precision of a military general planning an amphibious invasion.

Harry descended the stairs to find the sitting room had been transformed into something that looked like a children's magazine editor had been given unlimited budget and possibly hallucinogenic substances. Streamers in silver and green (Slytherin colors? Really, Kreacher?) draped across the ceiling in elegant swoops. Balloons—actual magical balloons that floated in geometric patterns and occasionally formed shapes like dragons, phoenixes, and what appeared to be a very detailed rendering of Hogwarts castle—drifted through the room like they were performing synchronized swimming in midair.

The gift table was already groaning under wrapped packages of various sizes, from small elegant boxes that screamed "expensive jewelry, probably cursed" to massive parcels that suggested either very generous friends or someone had accidentally wrapped a small vehicle.

But it was the cake display that made Harry stop dead in his tracks and question reality.

Eleven cakes.

*Eleven*.

Not small cupcakes or modest single-layer affairs. These were proper, full-sized, architecturally significant cakes that looked like they'd been designed by pastry chefs with engineering degrees and possibly military backgrounds.

They were arranged on a custom-built tiered platform that looked like it could support small aircraft. Each cake was a different flavor, labeled with elegant cards in Kreacher's careful handwriting: Chocolate Fudge Thunder, Vanilla Bean Dream, Lemon Raspberry Sunrise, Caramel Apple Perfection, Dark Chocolate Cosmic Chaos (that one had Drakor's name on it in glowing script), Strawberry Celebration, Orange Cream Fantasy, Coffee Toffee Excellence, Butterscotch Wonder, Triple Berry Paradise, and something ominously labeled "Surprise Flavor—Trust Kreacher."

*"Holy shit,"* Drakor breathed with the reverence of someone witnessing religious significance. *"Harry. Harry, look at the chocolate one. LOOK AT IT. The ganache work. The tempering. The structural integrity. This is art. This is POETRY. This is what happens when you give a house-elf adequate budget, creative freedom, and deep personal investment in your happiness. I may cry. Again, hypothetically. Because I don't have tear ducts. But spiritually? Waterfalls. Cosmic waterfalls of joy."*

"Kreacher," Harry said weakly as the house-elf appeared with a *pop* that suggested he'd been monitoring the room from undisclosed locations, "this is... this is insane. In the best possible way. But still insane."

"Master Harry deserves ELEVEN YEARS of celebration!" Kreacher announced with the fervor of someone who'd decided this was his sacred mission and anyone who disagreed could fight him in the kitchen with wooden spoons. "Kreacher has prepared each cake with LOVE, DEDICATION, and SUPERIOR CULINARY TECHNIQUES learned from seventeen different cookbooks, three cooking shows that Kreacher watched through the television Sirius installed, and one VERY HELPFUL portrait of a French pastry chef who FINALLY stopped criticizing Kreacher's technique after seeing the final results!"

*"The portrait criticism thing is real,"* Drakor confirmed. *"I was there. It was glorious. Kreacher threatened to turn the portrait to face the wall permanently. The French chef actually apologized. It was the most entertainment I've had since watching bureaucrats realize I was serious about eating them."*

Sirius appeared from the kitchen carrying what looked like additional serving platters, his hair slightly disheveled from helping Kreacher with last-minute preparations. "Don't try to talk him out of it, Harry. I already tried. He looked at me like I'd suggested serving stale bread and disappointment. This is happening. We're having eleven cakes. We might need to Floo a Healer on standby for sugar-related emergencies, but we're doing this PROPERLY."

The doorbell—which Kreacher had apparently charmed to play a different tune depending on who was arriving—chimed with a bright, cheerful melody that sounded suspiciously like the beginning of a Weird Sisters song.

"WEASLEYS!" Kreacher announced, practically vibrating with hospitality enthusiasm. "Kreacher will greet Master Harry's EXCELLENT GINGER FRIENDS who bring JOY and APPROPRIATE CHAOS to celebrations!"

The door opened before anyone could actually reach it—apparently Kreacher had decided manual door operation was beneath the dignity of this occasion—and the Weasley family tumbled in like a well-organized hurricane made of red hair and enthusiasm.

Molly Weasley led the charge, carrying what appeared to be several wrapped presents and a casserole dish because apparently she didn't trust anyone else's food preparation even when the host was a house-elf with militant dedication to culinary excellence. Her warm brown eyes immediately locked onto Harry with the kind of maternal assessment that could diagnose everything from malnutrition to existential crisis at fifty paces.

"Harry, dear!" she exclaimed, setting down her burden to pull him into a hug that could crack ribs but somehow felt exactly right. "Happy birthday! Eleven years old! My goodness, you've grown since we saw you at the ice cream parlour! Are you eating properly? You look healthy but I worry—"

"Mum," Ron groaned from behind her, his freckled face flushed with embarrassment. "You saw him three weeks ago. He hasn't changed that much. Can we maybe not immediately mother him to death?"

*"The ginger matriarch's concern is endearing,"* Drakor observed. *"Excessive, perhaps, but rooted in genuine care rather than obligation. I approve. Though her assumption that anyone except me could adequately monitor your nutrition is insulting. I'm a cosmic entity. I INVENTED optimal nutrition monitoring. Well, I didn't invent it, but I perfected it. There's a difference."*

Arthur followed his wife with the patient expression of someone who'd learned long ago that arguing with Molly about her mothering instincts was as effective as trying to stop the tide through stern lectures. "Happy birthday, Harry. Thank you for having us. We brought some gifts—nothing too extravagant, but things we thought you might enjoy."

Behind them came what appeared to be the entire Weasley sibling collection, ranging from young to older with varying degrees of coordination and enthusiasm.

Ron bounded forward immediately, his grin wide enough to threaten his ears' structural stability. "Mate! Happy birthday! This is brilliant! Look at those CAKES! Are those all yours? Can we eat all of them? Mum said we had to be polite but also she brought a casserole like she doesn't trust anyone else's cooking—OW!"

Molly had swatted him with practiced precision. "Ronald, don't tell people I don't trust their cooking!"

"But you DON'T—"

"That's not the POINT—"

Ginny slipped past her arguing family with the grace of someone who'd perfected the art of avoiding Weasley family chaos through strategic positioning and excellent timing. Her warm brown eyes were bright with genuine happiness. "Happy birthday, Harry! I love what Kreacher did with the decorations. And those cakes look amazing. You're going to be in a sugar coma for three days."

"Worth it," Harry said, grinning back.

The twins appeared on either side of him like they'd been summoned through synchronized magic, their identical faces wearing identical expressions of mischief that suggested their entertainment plans were either brilliant or concerning. Possibly both.

"The birthday boy!" Fred announced, draping an arm over Harry's shoulder with casual affection.

"Looking properly celebratory!" George added, mirroring his brother's gesture on the other side.

"We've prepared entertainment that will be MEMORABLE—" Fred began.

"—and EDUCATIONAL—" George continued.

"—in the sense that everyone will learn something about creative magic, probability theory, and why safety regulations are suggestions rather than laws!" they finished together.

*"I'm monitoring them,"* Drakor said immediately. *"Whatever they're planning, I'll ensure it stays within reasonable chaos parameters. Nothing that breaks fundamental laws of physics. Nothing that summons entities without proper authorization. Nothing that results in anyone losing consciousness or requiring emergency medical intervention. Standard responsible supervision protocols."*

*Those aren't standard protocols—*

*"They are NOW. I just made them standard. Cosmic entity privilege. Accept it."*

Behind the twins came two more Weasleys that Harry hadn't met yet, though he recognized them from Sirius's descriptions and the family photos Molly had shared at the ice cream parlour.

The first was probably the tallest person Harry had ever seen in person—and he'd met Hagrid, so that was saying something. Six-foot-something of pure muscle, with long red hair tied back, heavily freckled arms that suggested extensive outdoor work, and a burn scar across his right forearm that looked recent and probably dragon-related. His grin was warm and genuine, reaching all the way to his eyes in a way that suggested someone who loved what he did and was generally content with life despite apparent proximity to large fire-breathing reptiles.

"Charlie Weasley," he said, extending a hand that could probably crush walnuts but was surprisingly gentle in its grip. His voice carried that rough edge that came from years of outdoor work and possibly yelling over dragon roars. "Heard a lot about you from the family. Happy birthday, mate. Eleven years old—starting Hogwarts this year? You're in for a treat. Best seven years of my life, and I spent most of it learning about dragons and avoiding Filch."

*"Dragon specialist,"* Drakor observed with interest. *"His scent carries traces of multiple dragon species—Romanian Longhorn, Common Welsh Green, what might be Swedish Short-Snout though that's harder to confirm without direct contact. Extensive exposure to dragon fire, dragon magic, and probably dragon-related injuries that would kill normal humans. Interesting. I approve of anyone whose career involves regular proximity to creatures that could easily kill them."*

*That's a concerning approval metric.*

*"I have concerning approval metrics. It's part of my charm. Also, dragons are excellent creatures. Magnificent, powerful, occasionally murderous, and with excellent taste in treasure. Everything I aspire to be, except they can't manipulate reality or provide devastating social commentary. I'm basically a dragon but BETTER."*

The second new Weasley was as tall as Charlie but built differently—leaner, more bookish, with the kind of posture that suggested years of hunching over desks and probably taking very detailed notes. Percy Weasley looked exactly like someone who'd been made Prefect and took the responsibility so seriously that his badge was probably polished to mirror-shine and he'd memorized the school handbook verbatim.

His red hair was neatly combed (a rarity in the Weasley family from what Harry could tell), his robes were pressed with military precision, and he wore glasses that somehow made him look simultaneously more serious and more approachable. His handshake was firm but not aggressive, practiced in the way that suggested someone who understood professional networking but was still figuring out how to translate that into genuine social connection.

"Percy Weasley," he said with careful formality that suggested he was deliberately being more relaxed than his natural inclination. "Fifth year at Hogwarts, Gryffindor Prefect. My siblings mentioned you several times in the past few weeks. Happy birthday, Harry. It's a pleasure to finally meet you properly."

His voice had that particular quality that suggested someone who was trying very hard to sound professional and adult despite being only fifteen and probably still figuring out how to navigate the complicated transition between childhood and whatever came after.

"Gryffindor Prefect?" Harry repeated, latching onto the least intimidating part of Percy's introduction. "That's impressive. Is being Prefect as difficult as it sounds?"

Percy's expression brightened immediately, like someone had just asked about his favorite topic and he'd been waiting politely for an appropriate opportunity to discuss it. "It requires dedication, certainly. The responsibilities are significant—maintaining order, assisting younger students, mediating conflicts, ensuring proper adherence to school regulations while still fostering house spirit and community. But it's also deeply rewarding. The opportunity to make a genuine difference in the school environment, to serve as a positive example for younger students, to help create the kind of educational atmosphere that benefits everyone—it's quite fulfilling."

*"He's not wrong,"* Drakor observed. *"Though his delivery suggests someone who's been preparing speeches about Prefect duties and is eager to demonstrate his qualifications. Probably practices in mirrors. Definitely has detailed plans for his future career in magical government. High achiever with intense dedication to rules and proper procedure. Could either become an excellent ally or an annoying obstacle depending on how his development progresses."*

"Percy's obsessed with rules," Ron stage-whispered, earning himself a glare from his brother.

"Ronald, there's a difference between 'obsessed' and 'appropriately dedicated to maintaining civilized standards'—"

"That's just obsession with better vocabulary—"

"BOYS," Molly said with the kind of sharp tone that could cut through sibling bickering at fifty paces. "This is Harry's birthday. Save your arguing for literally any other day. Preferably days when I'm not present and don't have to hear it."

Charlie laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "Some things never change. Percy's still the rule-follower, Ron's still the chaos agent, and Mum's still trying to maintain order through sheer force of will and strategic threats."

"It's a system that works," Arthur said mildly. "Sometimes."

"Rarely," Ginny corrected.

"We prefer to think of it as 'organized chaos with good intentions,'" Fred offered.

"And occasional property damage," George added cheerfully.

Tonks emerged from the kitchen where she'd apparently been helping Kreacher with final preparations—or more likely, being forcibly removed from areas where her clumsiness might threaten carefully arranged food displays. Her hair had shifted to red and gold—Gryffindor colors—and she was carrying a tray of drinks with surprising steadiness.

"CHARLIE!" she exclaimed, her face lighting up with genuine pleasure. "Didn't know you'd be here! How's Romania? How are the dragons? Have you been bitten recently? You look like you've been bitten recently."

Charlie grinned, rubbing the burn scar on his arm self-consciously. "Nymph—Tonks. Good to see you. Yeah, got a bit too close to a Ukrainian Ironbelly last week. My fault entirely—wasn't paying attention to her body language and she got defensive. Nothing serious, just a reminder about proper respect for creatures that can incinerate you."

*"They know each other,"* Drakor observed with interest. *"Body language suggests a previous relationship—comfortable familiarity, lingering affection, but without the tension of unresolved romantic feelings. Probably dated, broke up amicably, maintained friendship. Healthy relationship management. Unusual for humans. I'm impressed."*

*You can tell all that from body language?*

*"I'm a cosmic entity. I can read subatomic particles and determine their emotional state. Human body language is CHILD'S PLAY. Also, the Metamorphmagus's hair shifted colors when she saw him, her pupils dilated slightly, and her posture became more open. Classic biological indicators of positive emotional response to a familiar person. I know things. Many things. So many things that if I shared them all, your brain would explode from information overload."*

"You two know each other?" Harry asked, curiosity overriding his attempt to not be obviously nosy about adult relationships.

"Dated for a bit," Tonks said with the casual ease of someone who'd completely processed the relationship and moved on. "Sixth and seventh year for him, fifth and sixth for me. Realized we worked better as friends than romantic partners. Now he writes me letters about dragons and I tell him about Auror training disasters. It's great. Very mature. Our parents were disappointed we didn't get married and produce athletic, dragon-handling children, but we're managing."

"Very mature," Charlie agreed, though his grin suggested he found their parents' disappointment more amusing than concerning. "Though Mum still occasionally hints that we should reconsider our life choices."

"I do NOT hint," Molly protested. "I simply mention that you were good together and made each other happy—"

"That's hinting, Mum," Ron said.

"It's OBSERVATION—"

"HINTING—"

Before the argument could escalate, Kreacher appeared with another *pop* and announced: "THE SOPHISTICATED PURE-BLOOD FAMILIES ARE ARRIVING! Kreacher will greet them with APPROPRIATE FORMALITY and SUPERIOR HOSPITALITY that honors Master Harry's excellent taste in international friends!"

The doorbell chimed again—this time a more elegant melody that sounded like classical music being played on tiny magical instruments—and Kreacher swept toward the door with the dignity of someone greeting visiting royalty.

*"Here we go,"* Drakor said with anticipation. *"The Greengrasses, probably. They have that punctual pure-blood energy that treats arriving exactly on time as sacred duty. Brace yourself for sophisticated conversation, excellent gift selection, and Daphne's analytical assessment of your party setup. She's been mentally preparing for this. I can sense her organizational energy from here."*

*You can sense organizational energy?*

*"I can sense EVERYTHING. Keep up, Harry. We've been over this."*

The door opened to reveal the Greengrass family in their full pure-blood glory—which, Harry had learned, meant looking expensive, confident, and like they'd stepped out of a magazine about "Elegant Magical Families Who Have Their Shit Together."

Cyrus Greengrass led the way, his dignified bearing suggesting someone who'd spent decades navigating pure-blood politics and had perfected the art of looking simultaneously welcoming and intimidating. His dark robes were cut in traditional style but with modern touches that suggested someone who respected tradition without being enslaved by it.

Daphne followed with her characteristic grace, her blue eyes immediately cataloguing every detail of the room with the focused attention of someone whose analytical mind was always working. Her robes were elegant but age-appropriate—sophisticated without trying too hard, in a shade of silver-blue that complemented her coloring perfectly.

Astoria bounced beside her sister with barely contained excitement, her eight-year-old enthusiasm barely restrained by pure-blood deportment training. She was clutching a wrapped present like it contained state secrets and possibly magical creatures.

"Harry!" Daphne said warmly, her composed demeanor cracking slightly with genuine pleasure at seeing him. "Happy birthday! Thank you so much for inviting us. This looks absolutely wonderful—Kreacher's outdone himself with the decorations."

"HARRY POTTER!" Astoria squealed, abandoning all pretense of pure-blood dignity to rush forward and thrust the present at him. "We got you the BEST present! Daphne helped but it was mostly my idea! Well, Daddy helped with the shopping but I picked it out! It's PERFECT for someone with cosmic entity partnership and systematic justice reform interests!"

*"The small Greengrass demonstrates excellent enthusiasm,"* Drakor observed. *"Marginally less than Gabrielle's existential curiosity about Dementor cuisine, but still impressive for an eight-year-old who's been trained in pure-blood emotional restraint. I approve. She's like a tiny tornado of genuine excitement barely contained by social expectations."*

Cyrus offered his hand to Harry with the kind of firm, respectful handshake that suggested he saw Harry as a person worth taking seriously rather than just a famous child to be managed. "Happy birthday, Harry. We're honored to be included in your celebration. Daphne's been looking forward to this for weeks."

"Not weeks," Daphne protested, her cheeks coloring slightly. "Days. Maybe a week. Possibly two. But definitely not weeks plural."

"Three weeks," Astoria stage-whispered to Harry. "She's been planning her outfit for three weeks. And she made a list of conversation topics in case there were awkward silences. I saw the list. It had seventeen different subjects organized by category."

*"SEVENTEEN CONVERSATION TOPICS,"* Drakor said with obvious delight. *"Organized by CATEGORY. Harry, she prepared for your birthday party like it was a diplomatic summit with foreign powers. That's either incredibly sweet or incredibly anxious. Possibly both. I respect the dedication regardless."*

"Astoria!" Daphne hissed, looking mortified.

"It's fine," Harry assured her, grinning. "I've been nervous about this all week. At least I didn't organize conversation topics. Though Drakor did prepare seventeen backup plans for various party disasters, so maybe we're all just anxious overachievers?"

"Eighteen backup plans," Drakor corrected. "I added one this morning for 'what if someone brings a pet that turns out to be a disguised dark creature.' It was a valid concern given pure-blood families' creative approaches to appropriate pets."

The doorbell chimed again—another sophisticated melody—and this time when the door opened, it revealed the Delacour family in all their French glory.

If the Greengrasses looked elegant, the Delacours looked like they'd been personally designed by someone whose job was making everyone else feel underdressed and possibly inadequate about their genetic lottery results.

Sebastian and Apolline entered first, both looking exactly as effortlessly sophisticated as they had during the introduction tea. Apolline's Veela heritage was carefully controlled but still noticeable in the way light seemed to favor her, the way her movements carried unconscious grace, the way she made even simple gestures look like they should be photographed for fashion magazines.

Fleur followed with that particular quality of teenage beauty that suggested she was going to be absolutely devastating in a few years and was already aware of it in a way that was confident without being arrogant. Her silver-blonde hair was arranged in an elegant style that probably required either magic or a very patient lady's maid, and her robes were the kind of subtle expensive that made you realize you were poor without being able to identify exactly why.

And then there was Gabrielle, who had apparently decided that arriving at Harry Potter's birthday party was the most important event of her entire nine-year existence and had dressed accordingly in robes that looked like someone had taken "sophisticated young French girl" and added "ready to interview cosmic entities about their dietary preferences."

"'ARRY!" she shrieked, completely abandoning any pretense of French elegance to rush forward with an enthusiasm that made Astoria's excitement look restrained. "JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE! We 'ave brought presents AND flowers AND Maman said I could ask Drakor THREE questions about flavor profiles if 'e is willing to provide educational commentary!"

*"The small French human remembers her priorities,"* Drakor said with satisfaction. *"This is why she's my favorite. She RESPECTS my expertise and has SPECIFIC QUESTIONS prepared for maximum educational value. Unlike some people who just want me to provide general cosmic wisdom without proper focus on the important topics like existential horror cuisine."*

*You don't have a favorite—*

*"I absolutely have a favorite and it's Gabrielle. She found me a first-edition book about cosmic entity culinary analysis that scholars thought was destroyed in a fire. She EARNED favorite status through superior research skills and dedication to my interests. This is how relationships work, Harry. Pay attention. You might learn something."*

Fleur offered Harry a small smile, her accent making even casual greetings sound elegant. "'Appy birthday, 'Arry. Your 'ome looks beautiful. Kreacher 'as clearly worked very 'ard to make zis special for you."

"He's been preparing since approximately dawn three days ago," Harry said. "Possibly longer. I think he's been planning this in his sleep. There might have been dreams involved. Architectural dreams about cake placement."

Sebastian shook Harry's hand with the warm professionalism of someone who was genuinely pleased to be here rather than attending out of diplomatic obligation. "Thank you for including us in your celebration, 'Arry. We are 'onored to be part of your first proper birthday."

As the families began mingling—Weasleys introducing themselves to Greengrasses, Delacours greeting everyone with French elegance, children starting to form natural clusters based on age and interests—Harry felt Drakor's presence settle into something that felt like cosmic satisfaction.

*"This is good,"* Drakor said quietly. *"Multiple families from different backgrounds, various ages, genuine care rather than political positioning. This is what birthdays should be. Celebration of your existence by people who actually value you as a person rather than as a symbol or strategic connection. I'm... proud. Which is weird for a cosmic entity. But there it is. Pride. In you, in Sirius for organizing this, in Kreacher for his militant dedication to hospitality. Pride all around. Don't let it go to your head."*

*Too late,* Harry thought with a grin. *I'm definitely letting it go to my head. This is amazing.*

*"Fair enough. You've earned some head-going. Just don't become insufferable about it. There's a line between 'enjoying well-deserved celebration' and 'developing ego that requires cosmic intervention to manage.' I'll let you know when you cross it."*

Sirius appeared at Harry's elbow, his storm-gray eyes bright with something that might have been tears if he'd been willing to admit to having emotions in public. "Ready for presents? Because I think if we make them wait much longer, Gabrielle might actually vibrate through the floor with excitement."

Harry looked around at the assembled group—his friends, their families, the people who'd decided he was worth celebrating despite knowing him for only a few months—and felt something warm settle in his chest that had nothing to do with Drakor's cosmic influence and everything to do with finally, *finally*, having people who genuinely cared whether he was happy.

"Yeah," Harry said, grinning so wide his face hurt. "Let's do presents."

*"PRESENTS,"* Drakor announced with satisfaction. *"The ritualized gift-exchange that humans use to demonstrate affection and social bonds through carefully selected objects. I've analyzed each wrapped package using cosmic senses and I have OPINIONS about which ones you should open first for maximum emotional impact and entertainment value. Listen to me. I know things. Many things. All the things."*

*I'll just open them in whatever order feels natural—*

*"WRONG. There's an OPTIMAL ORDER. Trust me. I'm a cosmic entity. I have SEVENTEEN BACKUP PLANS. I know what I'm doing."*

As everyone moved toward the sitting room where the present table waited with its towering collection of wrapped gifts, Harry caught Sirius's eye and saw his godfather's grin mirror his own excitement.

This was really happening.

His first birthday.

And it was perfect.

---

The sitting room had been transformed into what could only be described as "controlled chaos with good intentions"—which was probably the Weasley family motto if they were being honest about their approach to most situations.

The present table groaned under wrapped packages of various sizes, each one representing different families' attempts to calibrate "appropriate birthday gift for the Boy Who Lived who's never had a real birthday before and deserves something meaningful but not overwhelming." It was a difficult needle to thread, and judging by the varying package sizes, everyone had approached it differently.

Sirius had arranged chairs in a semicircle facing the table, with a comfortable armchair for Harry in the center that made him feel simultaneously important and like he was about to be interrogated by a very friendly tribunal about his gift-receiving emotional responses.

*"This is the part where you pretend to be surprised by each gift even though I've already analyzed them all using cosmic senses and can tell you exactly what's inside each package,"* Drakor said helpfully. *"It's called 'social performance' and humans require it for proper emotional bonding. Don't worry, I'll coach you through it. I'm excellent at coaching. Very supportive. Barely sarcastic."*

*You're always sarcastic.*

*"Exactly. 'Barely' is relative to my full capacity for sarcasm, which is EXTENSIVE. By my standards, I'm being incredibly restrained. You're welcome."*

Everyone settled into seats with varying degrees of coordination—the Weasleys sprawling comfortably like they'd claimed territory, the pure-blood families arranging themselves with unconscious elegance, and Gabrielle bouncing in her seat hard enough that her mother had to place a gentle hand on her shoulder to prevent spontaneous levitation through enthusiasm alone.

"Right then," Sirius announced with the practiced authority of someone who'd been designated Master of Ceremonies and took the responsibility seriously despite his general approach to life being "organized chaos with occasional pyrotechnics." "Harry's going to open his presents now, and we're all going to watch like civilized people who understand that gift-opening is a spectator sport that requires audience participation through appropriate reactions."

"Are there RULES for appropriate reactions?" Percy asked with genuine curiosity that suggested he was mentally preparing a rubric for evaluating gift-opening performance.

"Not rules," Arthur said quickly. "Guidelines. Suggestions. Things that make the experience pleasant for everyone rather than awkward."

"Sounds like rules with better PR," Ron muttered, earning himself a glare from his older brother.

"The primary guideline," Molly said with the patient tone of someone who'd overseen many gift-opening ceremonies and had developed strong opinions about proper conduct, "is that we let Harry open each gift at his own pace, we react with genuine appreciation for the thought behind each present regardless of monetary value, and we DON'T—" she looked pointedly at the twins "—make inappropriate comments about gift selection or suggest creative modifications that might violate international laws."

"We would NEVER—" Fred began.

"—suggest creative modifications—" George continued.

"—that might violate—"

"—international laws—"

"SPECIFICALLY," they finished together with identical expressions of wounded innocence that fooled absolutely no one.

Sirius handed Harry the first package with obvious satisfaction about his strategic gift-order planning. "This one's from me. I had help from Remus and Andromeda because apparently my gift ideas were either 'too expensive,' 'too dangerous,' or 'too obviously designed to make Harry look like a miniature version of my seventeen-year-old self.' This is the compromise gift. The boring responsible one. Open it. Pretend to be surprised."

*"He wrapped it himself,"* Drakor observed. *"The paper has slight imperfections from manual folding rather than magic. Unusual for wizards of his social status. Indicates personal investment rather than delegation to house-elves or professional gift-wrappers. Sweet, actually. Don't tell him I called it sweet. I have a reputation for cosmic detachment to maintain."*

The paper fell away to reveal a leather-bound photo album, its cover embossed with elegant silver lettering: "The Marauders and Their Legacy."

Harry's breath caught.

The first page showed four teenage boys grinning at the camera with the kind of casual confidence that suggested they owned Hogwarts and were graciously allowing the faculty to continue working there. James Potter—Harry's father—stood in the center, his messy hair catching the light exactly like Harry's did, his hazel eyes bright with mischief. Beside him, a younger Sirius radiated that same predatory grace, though his face was fuller, less haunted. Remus looked scholarly even at fifteen, and a shorter, rounder boy Harry assumed was Peter Pettigrew smiled from the edge of the group.

But it wasn't just the Marauders. The album continued through pages of their Hogwarts years, then their time in the Order, then James and Lily's wedding, then baby Harry with his parents looking at him like he'd hung the moon and personally invented happiness.

"Sirius," Harry said, his voice rough with emotions he wasn't entirely prepared to process in front of an audience. "This is—how did you—"

"Called in favors," Sirius said with studied casualness that absolutely didn't hide how much this had meant to him. "Tracked down anyone who might have photos. Remus had a bunch. Your parents' friends contributed. Some I found in old Order archives. I wanted you to see them—your parents, their friends, their lives before... everything. The people they were when they weren't just tragic figures in a story about war and sacrifice."

The room had gone very quiet, that particular kind of respectful silence that happened when people recognized something emotionally significant was occurring and the appropriate response was to shut up and let it happen.

Harry flipped through pages slowly, seeing his father's progression from cocky teenager to slightly less cocky adult to parent whose entire face transformed when he looked at baby Harry. His mother's evolution from intelligent bookworm to fierce witch to someone whose love was visible in every photograph where she held her son.

*"Your biological connection to these people is strong,"* Drakor said quietly, his voice uncharacteristically gentle. *"Not just genetic—emotional, spiritual, cosmic. They loved you completely and without reservation. Everything they did, every choice they made, was oriented toward ensuring your survival and happiness. That kind of love leaves traces in the fabric of reality itself. I can sense it in these images. Preserved moments of complete devotion."*

*That's... surprisingly poetic for a cosmic entity who usually makes jokes about eating bureaucrats.*

*"I contain multitudes. Also, this is important. Your parents deserve recognition for being actual people with lives and relationships and joy, not just tragic plot points in your origin story. Sirius understood that. The gift is perfect. Tell him before I have to make you."*

"Thank you," Harry said, looking up at Sirius with eyes that were definitely not tearing up because that would be embarrassing in front of everyone. "This is perfect. Really perfect. The most perfect gift I've ever gotten."

"Well, technically it's the only birthday gift you've ever gotten from someone who actually cares about you," Sirius pointed out with typical emotional deflection through humor. "So the bar was pretty low. But I'm glad you like it."

"I love it," Harry corrected firmly. "I love it and I'm keeping it forever and no one's allowed to touch it except me and possibly Drakor if he promises not to provide sarcastic commentary on my parents' fashion choices."

*"I would NEVER—"* Drakor paused. *"Okay, I might occasionally observe that wizarding fashion in the 1970s was questionable at best, but I'll keep it to minimal commentary. This is clearly significant to you and I'm capable of respecting that. Sometimes. When properly motivated."*

Molly was dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief, Arthur was looking suspiciously misty, and even some of the kids were clearly processing heavy emotions about parents' love and sacrifice in ways that suggested this party was going to require some emotional recovery time.
