Chapter 156 - Chapter 155: Shadows Between Nations

The opportunity to maintain world peace was thus abandoned by Senmei Asahi.

But to be honest, Asahi didn't regret it.

Having lived in this world for more than ten years, he had developed a faint sense of belonging — to this land, to Konoha, and to the people he'd met along the way. Yet deep down, he could never forget what he truly was: a transmigrator.

This world, however real it felt, was still born from the pages of a manga.

So, compared to maintaining peace, Asahi was more interested in understanding the truth of this world — particularly the mysteries of chakra, which transcended logic, science, and life itself.

Sometimes he couldn't help but imagine: 'If I ever returned to my previous world… could I still use chakra there?'

Having met the Akatsuki trio — especially Nagato and Konan — before they fell into darkness, Asahi felt a strange relief. In his past life, they had been two of the characters he admired most while reading Naruto. Seeing them alive, idealistic, and uncorrupted gave him an unexpected sense of closure.

For Asahi, that alone made his trip worthwhile.

Still, he knew that the next time they met, it would be as enemies. If Nagato ever attacked Konoha in the future, Asahi wouldn't hesitate to kill him.

He had no intention of changing their fate.

His affection for those characters belonged to the manga version of the world — not this one. This world was real, and in it, Asahi had his own stance. If the people he once admired became his enemies, sentimentality had no place.

The mission in the Land of Rain was complete. Apart from confirming that Shimura Danzo was already plotting against Akatsuki, there was little new intelligence.

But that alone was enough to reveal a chilling truth — Uchiha Madara had already set his final plans into motion. Masked Obito had made contact with Yahiko's group; Yahiko's death was imminent. Nagato would soon awaken the true Rinnegan, and the Akatsuki would descend into corruption.

Next, Asahi's destination was the Land of Water — Kirigakure.

He needed intelligence on the village's internal purges. If he timed it right, he could secure Kimimaro before Orochimaru did.

In the coming years, his focus would remain on three fronts: Uzumaki Kushina's pregnancy, Uchiha Shisui's growth, and the movements within Kirigakure.

As for Akatsuki — it was best to let them evolve naturally. Intervening might disrupt the fragile chain of cause and effect that bound the timeline.

Within a Cave in the Land of Rain.

"He's gotten stronger again?"

Hearing Zetsu's report, the masked Obito's pupils contracted slightly beneath the orange spiral mask. His expression, hidden from sight, grew cold.

"It's troublesome." said White Zetsu, his tone uncharacteristically serious. "He might already be stronger than the Yellow Flash! He's mastered some kind of terrifying jutsu."

"Don't concern yourself with him for now." Obito said in a low, commanding tone. "Our priority is recruiting the Akatsuki organization."

"But leaving him unchecked could be a mistake. He's been investigating Akatsuki, but for some reason, he didn't engage Nagato and the others." Zetsu persisted.

"Senmei Asahi is a problem, yes," Obito admitted, "but he's not entirely loyal to Konoha. When the time comes — after the Akatsuki has fully formed — perhaps he can be… persuaded."

Ever since inheriting Madara's resources, Obito had gained access to vast intelligence networks. Among them was everything related to Senmei Asahi — his collaboration with Orochimaru, his brief cooperation with Shimura Danzo, and his growing independence.

Originally, Obito had thought Asahi an aloof but loyal shinobi of Konoha. Yet after reading so much classified information, he began to see the truth.

Asahi was not loyal — he was calculating.

Even as a child, he had deceived Konoha's sharpest minds, hiding his motives from even the Third Hokage. That kind of cunning was far more dangerous than raw power.

"I doubt we can bring him in." Zetsu muttered. "Akatsuki has nothing to offer him. He's too well-established in Konoha, and his ambitions don't align with ours."

Obito exhaled sharply. "We'll deal with him later."

Although he had learned much, the current Obito was still far from the manipulative mastermind he would one day become. His schemes were clumsy, his instincts driven more by emotion than strategy.

"Fine, fine…" Zetsu waved lazily — then suddenly froze, his tone changing. "Oh no. He's gone to the Land of Water!"

Kirigakure.

A region once ruled directly by Uchiha Madara himself — now under Obito's control.

Black Zetsu's eyes narrowed. "He went from Rain straight to Water. He must've found something."

"Hmph. The Land of Water, is it?" Obito's tone turned dark. "Perfect. Let's make it his grave."

"Keep a constant watch on him." he ordered. "I'll gather the Kirigakure shinobi myself."

A swirling vortex of black and red space spiraled open behind him, drawing him in.

Whoosh!

The Kamui warped him away.

Moments later, Black Zetsu sighed. "Humans really don't learn…" Then, like a shadow, he sank silently into the ground.

The Land of Water.

A flash of light — zing! — and Senmei Asahi appeared in an instant, using the Flying Thunder God Technique mark he had left years ago.

The ocean wind howled against the cliffs. Mist rolled endlessly across the marshlands.

Having to traverse the entire ninja world just to recruit one subordinate, Asahi couldn't help but sigh.

"Alas… my foundation in Konoha is still too shallow."

Konoha might boast tens of thousands of shinobi, but every promising one was tightly monitored by the higher-ups. Recruiting them privately was impossible.

Currently, his access was limited to the Konoha Hospital network — perfect for research, but inadequate for intelligence gathering.

He could assign tasks to ordinary shinobi, but there was no guarantee of their discretion.

'If any of my future projects leak,' Asahi thought grimly, 'the entire ninja world could erupt into panic.'

He needed subordinates — loyal, discreet, and absolutely obedient.

That was the real purpose of this journey.

After a day of quiet reconnaissance in Kirigakure, Asahi confirmed the atmosphere was tense. The mist village stood on the verge of collapse. Obito's control over the Fourth Mizukage was tightening; the whispers of an upcoming purge of kekkei genkai clans had already begun.

But it wasn't time yet.

Destroying entire clans couldn't happen overnight. Obito's method was insidious — to drown Kirigakure in fear and self-doubt first. Rumors had to spread: that the kekkei genkai clans were responsible for the village's defeat, that their powers were monstrous, and that they endangered ordinary shinobi.

The seeds of hatred had to take root before the culling began.

It would take years.

"Never mind." Asahi muttered. "I'll treat it as a vacation."

Kimimaro wasn't going anywhere — not yet. He just had to secure him before Orochimaru arrived. Until then, Asahi would quietly monitor the mist.

'With the Flying Thunder God Technique, I can return anytime. No problem there.'

Just as he relaxed his shoulders—

He stopped cold.

The air shifted.

Dozens — no, hundreds — of chakra signatures appeared in his sensory range, closing in fast.

'Huh? So many people… Am I surrounded?'

He frowned. 'Damn it. Why does this keep happening? Have I gone soft, or are sensory ninja really this good now?'

His expression darkened.

'Could it be… Zetsu?'
