Chapter 163 - Chapter 162: Minato Arrives

"It worked!"

"The Nine-Tails is trapped!"

For a heartbeat, the perimeter erupted. Konoha shinobi cheered in a rolling wave as the mire clamped over the colossal fox once more. But before the shouts could crest, the Nine-Tails flexed, nine mountainous tails whipped through the air with a sound like tearing storms. Mud sheared away in slabs; the entire mass of earth writhed and sloughed off its fur.

"Hold the line!" a jōnin captain barked, voice straining to be heard over the chaos.

Senmei Asahi didn't waste a breath. Chakra surged; his fingers blurred.

Earth Style ∙ Swamp of the Underworld.

The ground liquefied again, not as puddles but as a heaving brown sea. Bands of heavy, chakra-weighted slurry rose in waves and crashed over the fox, once, twice, then in relentless succession. The flows overlapped and sealed, hardening and softening in pulses as Asahi modulated the mix, turning the battlefield into a vast, swallowing centrifuge that compacted around the Nine-Tails. In moments, a titanic mud sphere pulsed and tightened, its surface crawling with binding patterns.

He layered it with a second control.

Sage Art ∙ Inorganic Reanimation.

The "mud" awoke, grain by grain, plate by plate, until the sphere behaved like a living organ. Bands inside squeezed, shifted, and braced, compensating for every convulsion of the beast within.

The cheering returned, louder, nearer. "It's sealed! it's sealed!"

'No. It's just contained, not sealed.' Asahi corrected himself. 'And containment bleeds chakra.'

Inorganic Reanimation animated the inanimate by force of will and chakra. The larger the mass, the faster the drain. Even with Sage Mode amplifying him, and the reservoir he'd preloaded into his Yin Seal, this expenditure was brutal. He could feel the drag in his limbs, the knife-edge focus required to keep the shell responsive to the fox's thrashing.

Worse, he knew the ceiling. In the original stream of fate, half of the Nine-Tails inside Naruto had punched through Planetary Devastation, a gravitational prison forged by god-tier power. By comparison, his evolving earth-shell was clever engineering, not divine iron.

It would buy seconds, not victory.

Still, seconds changed wars.

Inside the sphere, something hammered.

Boom… boom… BOOM.

Hairline cracks veined the surface, healed, then reappeared wider as tails acted like pile drivers from within. Asahi poured more chakra, weaving braces that snaked tighter around joints and tails.

"Sandaime-sama!" he called over his shoulder without looking back. "I can't maintain this much longer, prepare the sealing!"

"Understood!" Sarutobi Hiruzen's answer was instant. "Sealing squad, on me! Form the array!"

Anbu and specialists broke from cover, fanning into a twelve-point formation around the sphere. Tags unrolled. Inked ropes hissed as they were stretched taut. A second ring of guards interlocked shields, ready to intercept shockwaves while the sealing specialists worked.

The sphere bucked.

"Roar!Roar!"

The cry from within wasn't bestial alone, it carried ancient hatred, old as continents. Chakra spiked so fast the air felt thin. A deep glow built at the shell's core, humming like a storm trapped in a bottle.

"Tailed Beast Bomb!" someone shouted, voice cracking. "It's charging one inside!"

"Brace!" the captain snapped. "Frontline, down!"

The detonation punched outward.

The sphere burst in a fountain of sludge; a beam of black-red annihilation drilled forward like a spear.

Earth Style ∙ Earth-Style Wall.

Earth Style ∙ Earth-Style Wall.

Earth Style ∙ Earth-Style Wall.

Dozens of slabs erupted, terrace upon terrace, then shattered like paper screens. The Tailed Beast Bomb didn't sag or scatter; it carved the same perfect line toward the lights of Konoha.

Hiruzen's jaw set. He vaulted backward, shedding distance in a chain of rapid flickers. "All units, retreat! Do not contest that line!"

"Move! Move!" squad leaders echoed, dragging the slow and covering the stumbling.

An Aburame team that had pushed too close reeled. "Captain! The hive, my insects, they're rioting!" one shinobi gasped, hands clutched around his abdomen as the Nine-Tails' erosive chakra sent the colony into wild panic.

"Fall back, Aburame! Medics, stabilize their hives, gentle suppression only!"

Two platoons, unable to watch homes fall without a strike, threw in desperation volleys.

Fire Style ∙ Fire Dragon Bullet!

Wind Style ∙ Great Breakthrough!

Scarlet flame and howling gusts met the oncoming core and vanished like mist under a sun.

"Back!" Asahi roared, voice cutting through the surge. "Clear that corridor! This isn't an enemy you burn down!"

The line split with practiced speed, carving a trench of air in front of the onrushing sphere. Dozens would have died if not for that obedience; as it was, a handful of shinobi caught the edge of the wash and tumbled like rag dolls across the hardpan.

'Too far,' Asahi measured coldly, eyes tracking the geometry. 'Even with Guiding Thunder, I can't reach that line in time from here.'

The beam screamed toward the village—

Flying Thunder God Guiding Thunder.

A yellow flash sliced reality. Namikaze Minato appeared in the exact line of death, both hands braced on a tri-pronged kunai. A pale membrane etched in black traceries blossomed from the mark, cupping the bomb's face like a glass bowl. Space kinked. The sphere slowed against nothingness, then slid sideways, swallowed through coordinates no one else could see.

BOOOOOOM!

The horizon bloomed white in a distant, empty quarter.

A heartbeat of stunned silence held. Then Konoha's lines cracked into joyous cries.

"It's Yondaime-sama!"

"Yondaime-sama is here!"

"Long live the Fourth!"

Even veterans who'd stood steady in the face of the fox found their breath returning at the sight. Prestige mattered. Presence mattered. And Minato's presence was a wall against despair.

Senmei Asahi didn't cheer. He watched the Nine-Tails' pupils change, tomoe-clouded savagery fading to a harsh, lucid gleam as something invisible cut the thread between controller and beast.

'He severed the control. Good… and bad.'

A mindless Nine-Tails was predictable in its hate. A thinking Nine-Tails, old and cunning, was a catastrophe with strategy.

Chakra pressure rose again, different this time: cleaner, hotter. The air grew keen. The nine tails swept in synchronized arcs, their tips flicking with surgical precision. From each stroke, invisible edges fanned out.

The first volley hit the forward ranks.

Shhht—shhht—shhht.

Bodies fell in lines as if drawn by a blade. Armor split. Stone pillars and old pines on the ridge beyond parted cleanly down the grain.

"The gap, there's no comparison," a captain whispered, horror creeping past discipline. "We're insects to it."

"Eyes up!" another snapped, dragging his comrade back to the present. "Shift the screen!"

A shadow swallowed the moon.

Ninja Art ∙ Crushing Toad Lid.

Gamabunta crashed down in a gout of displaced air, massive blade wedging, his bulk pinning the Nine-Tails with the weight of a falling island.

THOOM.

The ground spider-webbed. The chief toad grunted, face sour as rain. "Oi, Minato! It's the Nine-Tails! You've gone way too far this time!"

"Apologies, Gamabunta," Minato said, voice steady but tight. "I'll handle it from here."

He landed lightly near Hiruzen and Asahi, cloak whipping in the gale. Even after the adrenaline of his arrival, Asahi could see the blood at his sleeve, the strain behind his eyes.

"Sandaime-sama. Asahi. You've held the line." Minato's glance flicked over the field: shattered bulwarks, triage stations already overfull, sealing teams resetting their lattice despite shaking hands. "From here on, leave it to me."

Senmei Asahi stepped forward, eyes like flint. "Minato-senpai. Don't do anything foolish."

The Fourth's gaze met his. For a breath, something like understanding passed between them, two men doing arithmetic only they could see.

"You really can't hide from him." Minato told Hiruzen with a rueful exhale. "He sees straight through me."

His view had been impeccable. He'd watched from afar while Asahi wrestled the fox with ground and will. He'd felt Hiruzen's summons snap and brace. He'd counted the seconds bought by each intervention and understood their limits.

The truth was simple. Neither he nor Hirzuen possessed a village-shaking suppression technique like Senju Hashirama's Wood-style. Hiruzen's chakra, formidable in youth, was no longer a bottomless well. Even together with Asahi, they were smearing war paint on a tidal wave.

Against the Nine-Tails there was only one true answer: sealing.

"Yondaime-sama!" officers called, forming an honor cordon as they pulled their people back out of his working space. "We'll hold the perimeter!"

"Buy me some time." Minato answered. "Not much, just moments."

On the fox's spine, Gamabunta grunted, foot grinding down. "This guy's thrashing! You'd better be quick!"

The Nine-Tails arched, then flexed, tendons standing out like cables. Gamabunta's heels dug trenches. "Oi! I said it's the Nine-Tails! Don't you dare leave the heavy lifting to me!"

"I'm sorry, Gamabunta." Minato repeated softly. "I'll take care of the rest."
