Chapter 5 - Traveling Birds

"Ok, we take turns carrying her. I'll take first shit." Damon said while positioning himself to pick her up. Damon was a bit scrawny, but still strong. Throwing her over his shoulder, he wobbled a bit before catching his balance and began to move.

After traveling for a couple minutes, Damon asked the obvious question.

"Have you awakened?"

Walking on the side of him, Jasper smirked a bit.

"Just in time too, I suppose today is my thirteen birthday. Either that or I was able to awaken early. Damn, I wish I knew what day it was. I mean my birthday was only a week or two away before all of this crap."

Damon looked at his chiseled body and handsome face briefly feeling a little jealous.

"I really don't know what my ability is persay, but its something to do with strength. I was going through my awakening when those spiders showed up. The next moment I was being wrapped up and dragged away."

"As you should know, when someone is awakening, our body and mind are put into a transcending state that lasts for ten or more minutes. During that time, I was helpless and felt like my mind was trapped in another space or dream of some kind."

"When the process was done, I ripped through that sack of webs and made a run for it. While running i saw many other spiders hauling in prey of many sizes. I only found you because of the rain i saw in the distance. For some reason I just followed it, to my surprise it was the right choice."

"What is it with this rain anyway, it was raining the night we escaped and would rain off and on as we traveled. If I didn't know any better, I'd say its following us. It's not like it's raining everywhere, its just in a certain spot which is wherever we are at." Jasper said in length.

Damon twisted his lips in thought and exhaled lightly. It's not like he was keeping it a secret or nothing. He just didn't care to tell anyone about his pathetic ability.

"It's my ability. " he mumbled.

"You say something. " Jasper asked.

Damon gave him a side eye while shifting Raya's weight a little.

"It's my ability. " he mumbled through his teeth.

"Dame, mind if I call you Dame?....you gotta speak louder, I can't hear you."

"It's my ability!" Damon said out loud.

Jasper's head cocked to the side with cutting eyes, he looked up at the rain clouds above which was now only producing a light sprinkle. Jasper eyes lit up and his mouth opened wide with a partial smile.

"What, are you serious...oh man that's so, so...

"Weak." Damon cut in saying.

"Amazing. " Jasper said making Damon look at him oddly.

"Whats so amazing about creating rain? It serves me almost zero purpose and helps with nothing. I mean I get a little boost in speed, strength, stamina and my agility while its active but that's all. My rain literally does nothing else. "

"Oh come on, it takes time. It's many abilities out there that seem weak, but with a little training and time it changes."

"Yea well, I've been training my ability for three months now and nothing has changed."

Jasper stopped walking and looked at Damon with furrowed brows.

"Wait, how old are you?"

Damon twisted his lips in aggrevation before answering.

"Ten."

Jasper eyes nearly popped out of his head. He turned around and walked back and forth a couple times before facing Damon who had stopped walking.

"Holy hell, you're an early awakened, by three whole years. Do you know how stupid rare that is?"

"Yea so what, it doesn't change the fact that this early awakened has an ass ability. "

Jasper looked at Damon for a moment in then at the ground and began mumbling a few words.

"Three months since you awakened huh! Nothing has changed. Hmmmmm, I don't know, its hard to say. Either way your ability has helped us greatly no matter if you believe it or not. Looking back, you used your rain to make us harder to track after we escaped didn't you?"

"Yea, it was all i could do."

"Well if you ask me, your ability saved our skins from the beginning. Although, I would be careful, now that I know its your ability tracking you would be easy. Just look for the rain clouds in one area. Then again it rains naturally in one spot all the time so its not a big deal really. " Jasper said thoughtfully.

"Yea I know, ill stop it for now."

They continued walking and talking deciding on which direction they should go. They had no clue where they were or the different kinds of dangers that lurked inside the forest. With no idea how long it would take to reach civilization, all they could do was keep moving.

"We should find a safe place to rest, somewhere that's closed in like a burrow or a cave." Jasper recommended.

Damon agreed, but it was easier said than done. They were interrupted by a loud gargling growl as Jasper placed Raya on his shoulder to carry.

"Yea, im starving as well, we gotta do something. Heck if we cant find food, we can forget about getting out of this forest alive. Starvation will kill us before a beast will." Jasper said in which Damon also agreed.

"Let's find a place to camp and then try to find some food while the sun is still up." Damon suggested.

An hour or so later, they came to a area with multiple large mounds of dirt and high grass. After walking up and down a couple, one of Damon's feet broke through the soil as if he stepped on a glass ceiling. Rocks included with layers of dirt and grass fell through as he pulled his leg out.

Looking around for a moment he urged Jasper to walk down the mound carefully. Once at the bottom and on leveled ground he turned to the side of the mound and kicked it putting a shallow dent in the soil. He then began digging his hands inside pulling out large chunks of dirt and rocks.

"You think we can create our own cave?"

"Yea, a cave that will collapse on us in our sleep. If we dig a hole through the side, there is not telling if it will be stable enough." Jasper responded.

"True, but do you have any other ideas? Cause besides this one, we are going to be sleeping out in the open tonight. The sun is beginning to fall." Damon said with a raised brow.

Jasper tapped his feet on the ground in thought before placing Raya on the ground out the way. A red thin line of energy surrounded his fists. Drawing back, he punched the mound making dirt and small rocks spew out of it. With a pause, he looked for signs of it all crashing inward and when it weren't none, continued.

In a little over an hour they were able to make a hole in the side of the mound big enough for all three of them. The hole was approximately 3 meters deep, but only 4 meters wide. Damon and Jasper made it that way on purpose in order to widened it out further inside. Once they reached five meters deep, Damon twisted and tied vines and leaves on a dry limb. With Jasper's striking strength, he managed to use two rocks to make a small fire creating a torch as they dug deeper so they could see.

Unfortunately they had to swap out the torch a number of times after it burned too far down. The only way to keep the fire at the top was with oil of some kind which they did not have.

After successfully widening it out, They now had plenty of room around the right depth without taking the holding structure of the mound that kept it sturdy away from it. The ceiling was low, but they made it high enough for them to crouch in and out.

"Not too bad, I guess it was a good idea, im still worried about it caving in on us though, but hopefully it holds. Jasper said.

"Wait, what are you doing Digging straight up, you'll weaken the top. "

"We have to let the smoke escape upwards, otherwise we won't be able to keep a fire going inside." Damon responded while digging out a small tunnel the size of his arm to the surface.

"Hmmm, I didn't think about that. Well we better pull Raya inside before some beast thinks they have a free dinner. "

"Oh snap " Damon shouted.

They both crouch walked as fast as they could, seeing Raya was fine, but still unconscious. Jasper was just about to carefully drag her inside when Damon stopped him.

"Wait, we cant go looking for food with her like this, I doubt you want to go out there alone even with your new strength. It's just not ideal. Someone would have to stay here with her."

"You're right, want me to smack her until she wakes up?"

Damon looked at Jasper and shook his head as if saying are you nuts.

"No, hopefully this will do the trick."

Rain clouds formed above them, which brought light rain that slowly increased as Damon focused. Seeing it again, and knowing it was Damon's doing. Jasper looked at it in awe while stretching his arms up and holding his mouth open to catch a little water.

It still took some time, but Raya began moving and eventually popped up with panic eyes. They both quickly went to her side calming her down and explained everything that happened after she was captured.
