Su Luo's phone rang.
It was a call from his mother.
Su Luo immediately put down what he was doing and answered.
As someone living in a foreign country, what he feared most was an unexpected call from home.
When Su Luo was a child, his family struggled financially.
Both of his parents were farmers with meager incomes. However, when Su Luo expressed his desire to play football, his parents fully supported him without hesitation.
Sports school tuition was extremely expensive, with training fees as high as 20,000 yuan per year.
Although 20,000 yuan may not seem like much now, more than ten years ago, it was a huge sum for a rural family.
To ensure Su Luo could pursue football, his father left for the county and worked two jobs a day, while his mother managed the farm alone.
They barely made ends meet.
Now, every month, Su Luo transfers money to his parents' bank account, allowing them to live more comfortably.
But his father simply couldn't stay idle.
He secretly continued farming behind Su Luo's back. When Su Luo found out, he had a big argument with his father about it.
When Su Luo's father was younger, he had worked as an apprentice in a restaurant to earn money for Su Luo's tuition.
Although he never became a chef, his cooking skills were excellent.
So, Su Luo opened a hot pot restaurant in downtown Chongqing for his father to keep busy—
At least being a restaurant owner was easier than farming.
"Su Luo, how have you been? Are you injured?"
His mother's gentle yet concerned voice came from the other end of the phone.
Before Su Luo left for Europe, his mother had little interest in football.
However, as he spent more and more years abroad, she started learning how to watch football matches and follow post-match news.
In recent years, Su Luo had made her worry countless times.
After all, every time he got injured, she would be heartbroken for days.
"Nothing's wrong, Mom."
"How have you and Dad been lately? Are you both in good health?"
Mother Su replied, "We're both doing well! But actually, your father and I went back to our hometown two days ago, and guess what?"
"Granny Kai from the next village introduced you to a potential partner!"
"She's a teacher, 25 years old, and quite tall. Your father and I met her, and we both think she's a wonderful girl."
As soon as Su Luo heard this, his mind went blank.
Not again…
"Mom, how many times have I told you?"
"My career is my priority right now! I'm in Europe, and she's in China. We're thousands of miles apart—how would that even work?"
"Besides, I already have a girlfriend!"
But his mother completely ignored his response and continued:
"You're already thirty-three!"
"Other people your age in the village already have kids! Some of them are old enough to run around buying soy sauce!"
"Your father keeps saying he wants a grandson. Just let him hold one already!"
Su Luo was completely speechless.
He patiently explained, "Mom, I really don't have time for this. Let's wait until I retire! Right now, my top priority is competing. Women will only slow me down on the pitch!"
Upon hearing this, Mother Su couldn't help but snort in disbelief:
"Slow you down? You can't even run anymore!"
"If you take your time on the field any slower, your father might be able to outrun you!"
As expected of his biological mother, her sharp-tongued complaints hit where it hurt most.
Mother Su didn't stop there.
"Look at Beckham! He has four kids!"
"And you can't even get a girlfriend?"
"I told you already! I HAVE a girlfriend!"
"Then send me a photo!"
"You never send me one, so I don't believe you! You're just making excuses!"
Su Luo: "..."
"Why don't you talk about Ronaldo? He's not married either!"
Mother Su scoffed:
"Cristiano Ronaldo isn't married, but at least he has kids!"
"Don't think I don't know about Ronaldo!"
Realizing he couldn't win against his mother, Su Luo quickly came up with an excuse:
"Alright, Mom, I need to wake up early for training tomorrow! Go to sleep!"
And with that, he hung up the phone.
