Chapter 5 - Journey To Vasperia

Zym extended his hand, his eyes aglow with an otherworldly energy. With a swift motion he traced intricate patterns in the air, and a shimmering portal burst into existence before him. The air rippled and distorted, offering a glimpse of a realm beyond their own — Vasperia. The portal pulsed with an eerie blue light, its surface a swirling vortex of blue and white.

This was a desperate gamble. But as Zym stood before the portal, he felt a flicker of hope take root within him.

He turned to Zola, forcing a smile despite the weight pressing on his chest. "Remember the plan. Hold the council at bay for as long as possible. I will return with Kael as soon as I can."

Zola's amber eyes burned with fierce determination. "Go. Find Kael. Let us do all we can to expose the truth and prevent needless bloodshed."

Taking a deep breath, Zym plunged into the swirling vortex. The world dissolved around him in a kaleidoscope of colour and disorienting sensation. He tumbled through the portal, the wind whipping at his celestial armour, the taste of ozone sharp on his tongue. Reality bent and twisted around him before solidifying once more.

He landed on soft, damp earth, the scent of pine filling his nostrils. Disoriented, he pushed himself upright and took in his surroundings. He stood within a towering grove of ancient trees, their branches reaching toward the sky like gnarled fingers. Sunlight filtered through a thick canopy of emerald leaves, casting an ethereal glow across the forest floor. The air was gentle on his skin — a stark contrast to the harsh winds of Vaul.

In the distance, nestled amongst the trees, a majestic tower shimmered into view. The Guardian Tower. Its obsidian walls gleamed in the filtered sunlight, intricate glyphs etched across every surface. Zym's heart quickened at the sight of it.

He spread his wings and launched himself toward the tower. As he drew closer, a faint hum filled the air — a magical ward pulsing steadily around the structure. Zym recognised the sigil of Vasperia, a swirling vortex not unlike the portal he had just traversed. He channelled a measure of his own celestial magic, matching the rhythm of the ward until, with a soft sigh, the barrier flickered and dissolved.

He landed softly on a platform jutting from the tower's side and approached a pair of massive, ornately carved doors. He knocked, the sound ringing out through the stillness. After a brief pause, the door creaked open to reveal a figure cloaked in shadow.

"Who goes there?" a deep voice boomed, carrying a note of curiosity beneath its authority.

Zym straightened his celestial cloak. "I am Zym, Guardian of the realm of Vaul. I come seeking an audience with Kael."

The figure stepped forward into the light. Zym's eyes widened. "Kron? Is that really you?"

Kron, the tinkerer — one of the guardians of Vasperia and an old friend — broke into a warm smile. His mechanical arm glinted in the sunlight, a testament to both his ingenuity and the battles behind him. "Zym! By the stars, it has been too long."

They embraced briefly, the weight of shared history passing between them without words. Kron stepped back, eyes twinkling. "Come. Kael and Mieza will be thrilled to see you."

Zym followed Kron through the grand halls of the Guardian Tower. The walls were adorned with ancient tapestries depicting the history of Vasperia, and the air hummed faintly with magical energy. Kron filled the silence as they walked.

"How is Vaul? Still as windy as ever?" he asked with a chuckle.

Zym smiled, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "Windier, if you can believe it."

They arrived at a pair of heavy wooden doors. Kron pushed them open to reveal a spacious chamber bathed in the soft glow of enchanted lanterns. At the far end, Kael and Mieza were deep in conversation, their heads bent over a map.

Kael looked up first. His eyes widened, and he strode forward without hesitation. "Zym!" He pulled him into a firm embrace. "It has been ages."

Mieza joined them, her smile radiant. "Welcome, Zym. It is so good to see you."

The warmth of the reunion was a stark contrast to the cold urgency that had driven Zym across realms to reach them.

Kael stepped back, studying him with a fond expression, his eyes shifting from their initial green to a calm, steady blue. "You have not changed a bit. Still as steadfast as ever. It is hard to believe how much time has passed since the Font Monastery."

Zym chuckled, shaking his head. "And you have become quite the guardian. I have heard tales — your battle with the old gods, and even Zarathos himself." He glanced between them. "Look at the two of you. And Mieza, you are even more radiant than I remember."

Mieza smiled warmly. "We have all grown in our own ways. The realm of Vaul is fortunate to have you watching over it."

"And the realms are fortunate to have you both," Zym replied. "With allies like you, I believe we can face whatever is coming."

Kael smiled, a quiet pride in his eyes. "We have had our share of trials. But we have come out the other side stronger for them."

Kron, who had been watching from the side with a knowing smile, finally spoke. "Now then, Zym — what truly brings you here, and where is Zola? This is not a social visit."

The warmth in the room gave way to something more sober as Zym exhaled and turned to face them fully. "I am here because we need your help, Kael. The kingdoms of Kragnir and Oephidia are on the brink of war. The Garudas and the Nagas are days away from open conflict. The Eye of Naga has been stolen, an attempt was made on a Garuda envoy's life inside Naga territory, and we believe rogue factions within Naga society are manipulating events to ignite a war that serves no one but themselves. We need to uncover who is behind this before the first blow is struck."

Kael and Mieza exchanged a grave look. "This is serious," Kael said, his tone shifting entirely. "I know the Nagas — Queen Melinoe, Veridian. I visited Oephidia as a boy. If war breaks out between the Garudas and the Nagas, the consequences would be catastrophic. Both peoples are forces unto themselves. The land and sky would become battlegrounds, and the realm of Vaul may not survive it."

Mieza nodded. "We will help. But we need to move quickly — every moment counts now."

Kron stepped forward, his mechanical hand whirring softly. He looked between Kael and Mieza with a steady certainty. "I know you would both rather I keep watch over Vasperia than tag along. And you would be right. Kyra and I will hold things here. You both go with Zym." He offered a small smile. "I will be right here when you return."

Zym felt the tension in his chest ease for the first time since he had left Vaul. "Thank you," he said, his voice quiet but sincere. "Truly."

Kael clasped his shoulder firmly. "We are in this together now. Let us get to work — time is not on our side."

With their reunion behind them and their purpose set before them, the guardians turned their full attention to what lay ahead. The fate of the realm of Vaul depended on what they did next, and none of them intended to fail.
