I looked around the epitome of elegance and sophistication. The gallery is divided into distinct sections, each dedicated to a different artist, allowing their unique styles to shine. The hall is bathed in a warm, yellow light, creating an inviting and intimate atmosphere.
Magnificent chandeliers hang from the high ceilings, casting a soft, golden glow over the entire space. The walls are adorned with exquisite artworks, each piece telling its own story. The polished marble floors reflect the light, adding to the grandeur of the setting.
This is a place where art and luxury meet, providing the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable exhibition. But what I'm experiencing is more unforgettable than anything.
Alec pulled me aside, his expression darkened. "Evelyn, you need to stop worrying and try to relax. The exhibition must be exhausting for you. Leave everything to me. I have a strong feeling we're being watched, possibly by the killer. You need to be protected more than anyone because that was you in the painting. Keep Margaret with you at all times. I'll handle this."
My heart skipped a beat at his words. "Are you positive about this?" I whispered, glancing around nervously.
Alec nodded and looked intently in my eyes. "Yes, and we shouldn't draw any more attention to ourselves. I'll handle the questioning and review the security logs. You and Margaret should stay with the guests and keep things as normal as possible or you can go and enjoy the feast."
Margaret, overhearing our conversation, joined us. But Alec had already left.
My heart pounded as the artists called out for the dinner party, their voices echoing through the dimly lit hall. The weight of the unsolved mysteries pressed down on me, making it hard to breathe. Margaret, sensing my unease, furrowed her brow.
"Where did Alec go without us?" Margaret's voice was a mix of concern and frustration. "We were all supposed to find security together, but he didn't even wait. He just rushed off."
My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Alec had sensed someone watching us too. Margaret glanced around the room, her eyes following the path where Alec had disappeared into the shadows, now nowhere to be seen.
"He said we should enjoy the feast instead of worrying," I said, trying to draw her attention.
"Bullshit! Our lives are at stake, and he is talking about enjoying the feast? Unbelievable! I don't know about you, but I'm freaking out here since I saw your grotesque painting. That's a plain threat, Evelyn." She sighed and glanced at my expressionless face.
"Do you think he's always been this way, or is he being extra sweet lately? I can tell by the way he looks at you that he's more than just a friend, which you never told me about—something I might be a bit mad about later. But is he really trustworthy?"
I took a deep breath, my eyes meeting Margaret's concerned gaze. "Margaret, Alec and I, including Kai we have been my friend since childhood and there's nothing between us. We've been through so much together, and they have always been there for me, just like you" I began, my voice steady and reassuring.
Margaret sighed and glanced at my face, searching for any hint of doubt. "But why is he acting so sweetly suspicious to me? Is there something more to it?" she asked, her curiosity evident.
I shook my head gently. "I think he's just being extra supportive because of the exhibition and everything that's been happening with my artwork. Alec knows how important this is to me, and he wants to make sure I'm okay, just like you." I explained, a small smile forming on her lips.
Margaret nodded slowly, absorbing my words. "I guess I need more to make out sense of it. It's just… he looks way too posh and like a secretively handsome devil. Is he a billionaire or something? He reeks of money, and his looks are deceiving," she admitted.
She paused, then added, "I mean, he seems almost too perfect, like there's something he's hiding. It's hard to trust someone who appears so flawless on the surface."
I panicked a little at how she was addressing Alec. She doesn't know that we are nobles, and I'm not in the mood to reveal anything about my past lives. I'm afraid that when the time comes to tell her, I might lose a friend like her.
I chuckled and reached out to squeeze Margaret's hand. "I understand your concern, but trust me, Alec won't betray us. He's always had my back, and I believe he always will," I said firmly.
Then, with a teasing smile, I asked, "Are you crushing on my best friend, Margaret?"
Margaret made a disgusted face and replied, "Absolutely not! Stay here while I go find Alec." She turned and walked away, leaving me to ponder her reaction. I decided to follow her, not wanting Margaret to discover anything about Alec's nobility, just in case.
As I trailed behind her, my heart raced with every step. What if she found out? What if Alec revealed something unintentionally? The corridor seemed to stretch endlessly, shadows dancing on the walls, echoing my growing anxiety. Just as Margaret reached for the door handle, a sudden noise from behind made us both freeze in our tracks…
