Chapter 72 - Crimson Crest - II

Captain Kael Diram's eyes scanned his bridge, taking in the young faces at the control consoles. In truth, Kael himself wasn't much older than them, but as the commanding officer, he had to look the part. Fortunately, he had a solid anchor by his side. His first officer, Commander Varren Harrex, was a man of immense experience. Harrex had fought under Rear-Admiral Rysell for years, previously commanding one of his Carrack-class light cruisers.

Kael was incredibly grateful for Varren. The older man provided the steady confidence and support Kael needed to manage a bridge crew made up almost entirely of rookies. Before this assignment, Kael had commanded a Vindicator-class heavy cruiser. The bridge layout and overall shape were similar, but the sheer size and majesty of this Imperial-class Star Destroyer were in a completely different league.

To this day, Kael didn't know exactly how he had landed the command of a Star Destroyer. A rumor was sweeping the ship that Admiral Rysell had personally hand-picked promising young talent to command his fleet. Commander Harrex had practically confirmed the rumor, and for that alone, Rysell had won Kael's absolute loyalty.

Kael knew how difficult it was to rise to the rank of Captain without political connections. Even though he had won every skirmish he'd fought and commanded a highly disciplined crew, his previous work in the Outer Rim had gone completely unnoticed by Imperial High Command. He had wiped out half a dozen pirate groups, yet his reports had simply gathered dust on some bureaucrat's desk.

Unlike some officers who relied on risky, aggressive maneuvers, Kael's strength lay in calculated precision. He was certainly capable of fancy flying—the Vindicator was a fast, agile ship—but Kael preferred disciplined turbolaser volleys, coordinated targeting, and strict order. He had been drill-sargenting these exact principles into his new bridge crew.

These men and women were new, but they didn't lack talent. Their first real battle would be the true test. Kael knew they had the technical skills to deserve a spot on a Star Destroyer; now, they just had to prove they could remain cold and focused when the enemy started firing back.

The dark shape of the planet Gerrenthum loomed in the forward viewports as they moved to join the fleet already in orbit. Ahead of them lay a massive formation: a vanguard of Star Destroyers and dozens of smaller support ships. Kael had thoroughly read up on his Admiral's battle history, and he knew Rysell's tactical style well. But when he had looked over the initial crew transfer rosters, something felt off.

At twenty-eight, Kael knew he was remarkably young to be a Captain. He knew next to nothing about Imperial politics and actively tried to avoid them. That was why this transfer excited him. Under Rysell, he didn't need to play political games; he just had to do what he did best, and he would rise right along with his commanding officer.

Kael was highly satisfied with his current deployment, and he intended to keep his command for as long as possible.

--------------------

Deep within the fleet's flagship, Air Marshal CT-4191—nicknamed "Krayt"—sat in one of the four chairs on the right side of the briefing table.

Rear-Admiral Aaron Rysell sat at the head of the table, leaving the chair directly opposite him empty. To Rysell's left sat Chief Hannah Tyrren of Imperial Intelligence, followed by Lieutenant Colonel Lux Daniul of Wraith Company, Captain Luca Vene, and Captain Thara Vez.

To Rysell's right sat Marshal Catcher of the Stormtrooper Corps, General Kael Sallan of the Imperial Army, Krayt himself, and finally, Flight Captain Jaruss Wagner.

Rysell had gathered the absolute core of his military command. In this single room sat the leaders of the Stormtrooper Corps, Wraith Company, the Starfighter Corps, the Imperial Army, Imperial Intelligence, and the "Void Lancers"—a brand-new starfighter wing commanded by Jaruss Wagner, consisting of seventy-two cutting-edge TIE-Defenders. Two Star Destroyer captains were also present to represent the capital ships.

"I have gathered you all here to discuss our operations for the coming months," Rysell spoke, his calm voice drawing every eye in the room.

"We have been temporarily weakened by our new reinforcements," Rysell stated bluntly. "They are untested, inexperienced, and represent dangerous variables that I do not trust. We must change that. We must forge these recruits into proper crewmen, stormtroopers, army soldiers, and pilots. And for that, I need your direct leadership."

Rysell leaned forward. "Your veteran detachments are being split up and redistributed across the fleet. This is a necessary measure to cover up our glaring lack of experienced personnel. It means that you and your senior staff will have to work twice as hard while we are stationed here in the Gerrenthum system."

With a few taps on his datapad, Rysell sent the new transfer orders to each officer's terminal. He had already finalized the naval transfers, but now the ground and starfighter commanders needed to execute the same integration within their own ranks.

"Admiral, I understand your goal of balancing out the green units, but this redistribution will leave a very obvious weakness in our elite forces," Krayt spoke up. He wore the armor of a clone officer, his voice carrying the practical weight of a combat veteran. He saw the need to train the recruits, but the Starfighter Corps usually operated best by keeping the rookies and the veterans in separate, dedicated squadrons.

"The Starfighter Corps is indeed a challenge," Rysell agreed. "But I have decided that our green pilots need experienced flight leaders, just as the other branches do. After a set period, or if we face a major fleet action, we will revise the formations back to separated elite and recruit units. But by letting rookie pilots fly under veteran flight leaders, and veteran commanders oversee standard squadrons, we can rapidly improve their chances of survival."

Rysell's gaze turned to the end of the table. "The 'Void Lancers' will be no exception. They will not be integrated into the standard Starfighter Chain of Command, but they will be heavily tasked with training the incoming pilots—excluding those who are still getting used to their new fighters."

Krayt could see that Captain Wagner was not at all pleased with this assignment. However, Wagner understood the danger of inexperience just as well as the rest of them. If they engaged the Rebel Alliance in this state, the Rebel pilots would cut right through their recruits using the aggressive, coordinated tactics of the Dodonna and Tallon doctrines.

"The coming months will be difficult," Rysell concluded, his voice cold and steady. "Ensure that both your officers and their new subordinates understand exactly where their loyalties lie. That will be all."

With that, Rysell's officers saluted and filed out of the room, leaving the Admiral alone.

Just outside the blast doors, Lieutenant Colonel Lux Daniul retrieved his matte-black helmet from under his arm and slid it on. Instantly, he fell into step with a squad of Wraith Troopers, taking up guard positions to secure the corridor.

Krayt walked past the other officers as they stood in the hallway, whispering and discussing the new orders. He had no interest in small talk. He had been given a mission, and he was going to execute it.

-------------

Less than an hour after dismissing his core cabinet, Admiral Rysell relocated to a secure briefing room deeper in the command tower. This room featured eleven high-backed chairs arranged in a circle, with Rysell sitting in a slightly larger chair directly opposite the heavy sliding doors.

Seated around the table were the captains of the fleet's capital ships:

Captain Silas Thorne of the Allegiance-class battlecruiser 'Sovereign'.

Captain Luca Vene of the ISD-II 'Leviathan'.

Captain Thara Vez of the ISD-II 'Griffon'.

Captain Maxim Vance of the ISD-II 'Cerberus IV'.

Captain Henrik Ios of the ISD-II 'Gorgon II'.

Captain Kael Diram of the ISD-II 'Imperious IX'.

Captain Zed Lorak of the ISD-II 'Apex VI'.

Captain Vespera Das of the Secutor-class battlecarrier 'Inexorable.'

Captain Theodore Morrow of the Secutor-class battlecarrier 'Subjugator XI'.

Captain Alysanne Skryre of the Secutor-class battlecarrier 'Obsidian Wing'.

"Welcome, Captains of the Crimson Crest," Rysell began, his sharp eyes scanning the circle. "I assume you all know my name, my history, and my tactical playbook. I also assume you are smart enough to realize that this fleet composition is not my usual style—unless, of course, some of you actively participated in the bureaucratic sabotage that sent me these green crews."

Rysell let his gaze rest on Captain Zed Lorak for a long, uncomfortable moment. Everyone in the room noticed, and the tension immediately spiked.

"Few of you have ever commanded a Star Destroyer before, and even fewer have served under me," Rysell continued. "Let me make one thing perfectly clear: I do not care for bootlicking, and I have no time for it. Your ships will be run by practical discipline. I don't care about the kind of discipline that puts on a perfect parade when I board your ship. I care about the kind of discipline where your crew is too busy running combat drills to stand around waiting for me."

Rysell leaned forward. "This setup is new for me as well, but I will not accept mistakes on my part, and I expect you to hold yourselves to that same standard. I will point you in the right direction, but you have to take the initiative. Is that understood?"

A unified "Yes, Admiral," echoed through the room.

Rysell nodded. "Very good. Now, to the specifics. I have personally transferred experienced crew members from my previous Star Destroyers onto yours. These veterans know my playbook inside and out, and I expect you to treat them with respect."

"They are there to help you understand, perfect, and execute my—"

"I do not appreciate junior officers telling ME how to command my own ship!" Zed Lorak's loud voice cut right through the Admiral's sentence.

An icy silence fell over the room.

To Lorak's left, Captain Maxim Vance watched as one of the guards standing by the wall—an elite Wraith Trooper clad in dark shoretrooper armor—stepped up directly behind Lorak. The trooper, wearing a purple officer's pauldron, slammed the butt of his electro-staff against the floor. With a sharp crackle, the tips of the weapon flared with purple electricity, humming with a dangerous energy.

Lorak flinched violently, breaking into a cold sweat as the towering Wraith Trooper loomed over his shoulder. Just as everyone thought the captain was about to be physically disciplined, Rysell gave a slight wave of his hand. The guard stepped back, though his weapon remained active.

"While I care little for formal protocol, interrupting a flag officer during a briefing is a matter of basic disrespect," Rysell said, his voice deadly calm. "And while I can be patient, my guards often are not."

Lorak sat down quickly, staring at the table as if trying to memorize the grain of the metal.

"As I was saying," Rysell continued, acting as if nothing had happened. "My transferred personnel have valuable tactical experience, and I strongly suggest you listen to them. On a more operational note, I am promoting three officers to the position of Senior Captain, with the active fleet rank of Line Captain."

Lorak seemed to instantly forget his embarrassment, straightening his uniform tunic and sitting up tall. Vance looked at him, screaming silently in his own mind.

'You absolute fool', Vance thought. You are the very last person in this room he would ever promote. Vance had never met Rysell in person before today, but he had read the Admiral's files. Rysell would never hand a line command to an arrogant, hot-headed officer.

"First, the Line Captain of the First Heavy Line will be Captain Maxim Vance," Rysell announced.

Vance's eyes narrowed slightly in surprise.

"You are one of our few experienced Destroyer captains, and you have commanded multiple cruiser-level engagements," Rysell explained. "The First Heavy Line will consist of the Leviathan, the Gorgon II, and your own ship, the Cerberus IV."

Vance bowed his head respectfully. "Thank you, Admiral. I am honored, and I will serve to the absolute best of my abilities."

"I expect nothing less," Rysell replied.

I figured I might be considered for a line command, Vance analyzed quickly, 'I expected him to put Captain Vene or Vez on my flanks. Then, the tactical reality of the order clicked. The Leviathan was highly capable, but the Gorgon II was a rookie ship. He's testing me. The flagship will be fighting right alongside the First Line. If I fail, he can step in immediately. If I succeed, he can exploit the opening. Vance smiled inwardly, keeping his face perfectly neutral. Brilliant. Exactly what I expected from a commander like him.'

"Now, onto the Second Heavy Line," Rysell continued. "It will be commanded by Captain Thara Vez of the Griffon. She commanded a Victory-class ship for years and proved highly valuable in the Koradin Sector. Her line will include the ImperiousIX, the ApexVI, and her own ship, the Griffon."

Captain Vez executed a crisp, disciplined bow. "Thank you, Admiral. I will not disappoint you."

But before Rysell could proceed to the final line, Lorak stood up once again. "Admiral, I have been a Captain of a Star Destroyer for five years! I have participated in more fleet battles than the rest of this room combined! I want it formally noted that you are making a drastic mistake by appointing these green captains over experienced officers!"

Before Lorak could even finish his sentence, the same Wraith Trooper slammed him down onto the briefing table. The trooper held him pinned against the metal with the shaft of the electro-staff, towering over him.

This time, Rysell said nothing to stop the guard. Instead, he stood up, adjusted his tunic, and walked slowly around the table toward the struggling captain.

"Let go of me! What are you doing? Unhand me, trooper!" Lorak yelled, struggling in vain.

Another Wraith Trooper stepped up to help hold him, while a second pair entered through the main doors, taking up defensive guarding positions. Lorak was hauled to his feet and dragged directly in front of Rysell. With a swift strike to the back of his legs, the troopers forced him down onto his knees before the Admiral.

"I am no fool, Captain, but it is clear you are one," Rysell said, looking down at him. Lorak's face burned bright red. "I have read your combat record, and it is frankly embarrassing. Two years ago, you were ambushed by four Rebel CR90 corvettes. You panicked, sent your entire starfighter complement ahead of your capital ship screen, and watched them get wiped out by two squadrons of X-Wings."

The room was deathly quiet.

"Your ship was severely beaten, and you were losing," Rysell continued, his voice cold and steady. "You only survived because three Arquitens light cruisers arrived to save you. You then pushed the blame onto their commander to save your own career. Your Star Destroyer was damaged beyond repair and had to be scrapped."

Lorak swallowed hard, unable to look the Admiral in the eye.

"A year later, you were ambushed by pirates and barely won a grueling boarding action—where you hid in the maintenance pits while your crew fought and died to retake the ship."

Rysell took a half-step closer. "And finally, during a major engagement against a Rebel fleet, you broke formation to chase a wounded cruiser in a bid for personal glory. Your defiance of orders allowed three Rebel MC80 star cruisers to escape our blockade. You only survived a court-martial because this sector transfer took priority. You, Captain Zed Lorak, are an embarrassment to the Empire. This is your second infraction under my command. Give me a third, and I will personally take your head."

"Y-yes, Admiral. My apologies," Lorak stammered, his voice trembling.

With a brief nod from Rysell, the Wraith Troopers let go and stepped back, returning to their positions. There were now four heavily armed guards securing the room instead of two.

"By the way," Rysell addressed the room, "the men you see guarding me are Wraith Troopers. They are the direct extension of my will, and they will be treated as such."

Lorak quietly slunk back to his seat, and Rysell returned to the briefing.

"Lastly, we have the Third Heavy Line. While strictly classified as a heavy formation, it will not act as one. Captain Theodore Morrow of the Subjugator XI will command our Secutor-class carriers: the Inexorable, the Obsidian Wing, and his own vessel. Our three assigned Interdictor-class Star Destroyers and two Interdictor-Class Heavy Cruisers will join your formation when needed to provide gravity-well support, but will otherwise operate as an independent interdiction line."

Captain Morrow stood and bowed. "Understood, Admiral. I will support you to the end."

Morrow and his carrier, the Subjugator XI, were famous in the sector. Morrow had single-handedly suppressed a massive planetary rebellion using only the military assets aboard his ship. By deploying his starfighters and army troopers in a lightning-fast strike, he had broken the planetary government and captured the rebel leaders in record time, crushing the uprising through sheer speed and psychological warfare.

"That is all. You are dismissed to your commands," Rysell concluded. "Except for you, Captain Vance. Please remain behind."

As the other captains quietly filed out of the room, Maxim Vance stood perfectly still, waiting to hear what the Admiral had to say.
