Chapter 18 - The World Map

Nozue and I meandered through the dense woods of Leafa Forest, our path leading us to a tranquil clearing. The morning sun filtered through the thick canopy above, casting a gentle, golden light on the forest floor. We discovered a broad, ancient tree with sprawling branches that provided a perfect spot for a rest. With a sigh of relief, we settled beneath its protective shade.

I kept my eyes fixed on the quest paper in Nozue's hands, breaking the comfortable silence. "What exactly does the quest say, Nozue?"

Nozue unfolded the creased parchment and began to read aloud. "It says, 'Help the construction laborers find food for the whole day. The reward will be given by the chief of the workers.'"

I raised an eyebrow, considering the implications. "So, it means any kind of food? Enough to feed an entire camp for a day?"

Nozue nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Seems like it."

My stomach suddenly let out a loud growl in protest, causing Nozue to chuckle softly.

"Speaking of food... I'm getting hungry," I admitted, rubbing my belly.

"Yeah, I'm hungry too," Nozue agreed.

With a fluid motion, I accessed my newly acquired Item Space skill. I pictured the wrapped breakfasts Nozue had made for us that morning. A moment later, a small void opened in the air, and the packages dropped perfectly into my waiting hands. We sat cross-legged on the grass, our meal spread out between us as we began to eat.

As we savored the food, Nozue's thoughts wandered. "Kazu, I've been thinking. Do you think we could store large items with that skill?"

I paused, holding out a piece of bread to him. "Like what?"

"Like big animals," Nozue replied, taking the offered food with a grateful smile.

I shook my head slightly, unsure. "I haven't tested the limits yet, but the system description says it works with any non-living thing. As long as it's dead, it should go in."

Nozue's eyes lit up with a spark of inspiration. "Ah, I see! Well, I have an idea."

My curiosity was piqued. "What's your idea, Nozue?"

"How about we look for giant monster game that the laborers can eat? We could transport it easily with your magic."

I considered this for a moment before nodding. "That's smart. But maybe we should ask their chief first about what kind of food they actually need."

"Good point. Let's finish eating first," Nozue agreed, tucking into his meal with renewed appetite.

I took another bite, my eyes lighting up. "You're really good at this, Nozue! It's just like the food Nanay Rosalia makes."

Nozue blushed slightly, his cheeks warming under the compliment. "It's nothing, really."

I leaned back against the tree trunk, a grin spreading across my face. "Actually, I've got another idea to add to yours."

Nozue looked at me with interest. "What is it?"

"If we find the meat, how about you cook for the laborers?" I proposed.

Nozue's eyes brightened with enthusiasm. "That's a fantastic idea! Let's do it if they agree."

"Perfect!"

With our meal finished and our plans set, we stood up and brushed off our pants. The promise of helping the laborers and securing our reward motivated us as we set off deeper into the forest toward the construction site.

The Laborer Camp

We soon arrived at a bustling, noisy campsite near the eastern wall where dozens of tired, sweaty laborers were hard at work hauling stone and lumber. In the center of the camp stood a large canvas tent, clearly the headquarters.

Approaching the tent, I spoke to one of the armed guards stationed outside. "Excuse me! We're adventurers here for the posted quest. We need to speak with the chief."

The guard looked at our Guild cards, nodded, and went inside. A few moments later, a tall man with a rugged build, covered in stone dust and possessing a highly serious demeanor, emerged.

"I'm Chief Balthar. You're the adventurers? You're a bit young, but how can I assist you?" he asked in a deep, booming voice.

I stepped forward confidently. "We're here to help find food for your workers. We wanted to know exactly what kind of food you need."

Chief Balthar's stern expression softened slightly. "We need food that's heavily filling. Something that gives the men raw energy for a full day of back-breaking work. We've had trouble getting enough supplies from the city recently. Large game meat would be ideal."

Nozue glanced at me, then spoke up. "We were thinking of hunting large game in the forest. If we bring the food back, would you allow me to prepare and cook it for the workers?"

Chief Balthar looked highly intrigued. "Cooking for my men? That's a generous offer. If you can actually bring down a beast and prepare it, I see no reason why not. A hot, well-cooked meal might really boost their morale."

"Perfect!" I said with a smile. "We'll start hunting and come back soon."

With our plan locked in, Nozue and I ventured back into the dense foliage of Leafa Forest. The air was crisp and cool, filled with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant bird calls. I kept my Murderous Intent senses sharp for any threats, while Nozue scanned the underbrush for tracks.

"Any signs of large game?" I whispered, drawing my newly forged dagger, the Wrath of God.

Nozue shook his head. "Not yet. We should push toward the northern clearing."

I nodded. Blink. I vanished instantly, teleporting to the high branches of a massive oak tree to get a better vantage point. Moments later, I spotted them—at the edge of a sunlit meadow grazed a small herd of massive, heavily armored Horned Boars. I dropped down silently behind a bush, signaling Nozue to creep closer.

Nozue approached quietly, peering through the leaves. "I see them. What's the plan?"

"I'll create a distraction," I whispered, adjusting my grip on my dagger. It felt incredibly heavy, thrumming with intense magical power. "Can you make the ground beneath them slippery with your magic?"

Nozue nodded, raising his hands and murmuring a soft incantation. A shimmering, freezing layer of ice rapidly spread across the grass directly under the herd, making the surface incredibly slick and treacherous.

I activated my Dash skill. With a blinding burst of speed, I closed in on the beasts.

"Ready when you are!" I called out.

Nozue responded by casting a Water Wave spell. A powerful, rushing surge of water flowed over the ice, making it even more unstable. The massive beasts panicked, their heavy hooves slipping wildly as their movements became erratic and clumsy.

I used the opportunity to strike. I dashed forward, then used Blink to appear right beside the largest, most formidable boar in the herd. My runed dagger flashed with a brilliant light. Thanks to the [C] Combat Rune doubling the weapon's damage, it sliced through the beast's thick armor like warm butter.

The beast roared in surprise, staggering on the icy ground, but with a final, decisive strike to its neck, the massive creature fell to the earth, completely defeated. The rest of the herd scrambled away in terror.

Instead of struggling to carry the massive carcass, I focused my mind.

Item Space.

A shimmering, ethereal void opened before me. With a smooth motion, the massive boar was sucked into the pocket dimension, ensuring it would be perfectly preserved until we returned to camp.

Nozue ran over, his eyes wide. "Nice use of the Item Space skill! That makes transport infinitely easier."

I grinned, sheathing my dagger. "Let's head back to camp."

The Feast

The sun was just beginning to set, casting a warm orange glow over the landscape as we returned to the construction site. Chief Balthar and the exhausted laborers were gathered around the unlit fire pits, looking completely drained.

I walked right up to the center of the camp. The workers looked at me with dull curiosity. I raised my hand and, with a theatrical flourish, summoned the giant beast from my Item Space.

The massive carcass materialized in a shimmer of light, landing heavily on the dirt with a loud THUD.

The sight left the entire camp in a stunned, absolute silence. Chief Balthar's jaw practically hit the floor. "What… where in the world did that come from?!"

A murmur of wild astonishment spread through the laborers. "Did that kid just pull a two-ton beast out of thin air?!" one worker whispered loudly.

I smiled, thoroughly enjoying their reaction. "Yes, it's a special skill of mine. I stored it in a dimensional space to keep it fresh."

Chief Balthar's amazement was quickly replaced by deep respect. He approached us, looking at the clean cuts on the beast's armor. "That's an impossible feat for a spatial mage. But I must ask—how did two boys manage to take down such a formidable, armored beast without a scratch?"

Nozue and I exchanged a proud glance. "We used a combination of tactics," I explained. "I closed the distance with a teleportation skill, while Nozue used his ice and water magic to make the ground dangerously slippery. The beast couldn't maneuver to defend itself."

Chief Balthar nodded thoughtfully. "That's brilliant strategy. Most veteran hunting parties struggle against those boars. Your teamwork and raw skills are incredibly impressive."

The laborers, having overheard the explanation, cheered loudly.

"We're glad to help," I said. "Now, step back. My friend is going to cook!"

As Nozue took charge of the fire pits and began expertly carving and preparing the meat with wild herbs he had gathered, a rich, mouth-watering aroma filled the camp. The exhausted workers gravitated toward the fire, their tired faces brightening. The grim atmosphere of the camp completely vanished, replaced by cheerful laughter and excitement.

When the food was served, one of the burly workers approached me with a massive, beaming smile, holding a plate of steaming meat. "This meal is exactly what we needed to keep going. Thank you both so much for your hard work!"

I returned the smile warmly. "We're happy to help. Enjoy the meal!"

As the workers devoured their hearty dinner, Nozue and I exchanged a highly satisfied glance. Our successful hunt, combined with our growing teamwork, had strengthened our bond as adventurers.

The Reward

As night fully fell over the camp, Chief Balthar approached us by the edge of the firelight. He looked incredibly pleased.

"Kazu, Nozue, you've done an excellent job today. The men are re-energized and very grateful for your help."

"It was our pleasure, Chief," I said, bowing slightly.

Chief Balthar reached into his heavy leather pouch and pulled out a tightly rolled parchment and a clinking bag of coins. He handed them over to us. "As a token of our appreciation, here is your quest reward: two thousand silver coins. And... a little something extra for your travels."

I accepted the parchment with curiosity and carefully unrolled it. My eyes went wide as I took in the highly detailed, expansive chart. "This is a World Map!" I exclaimed. "I can see so many places! Look, Nozue, right there is Druzka!"

Nozue leaned in, tracing the ink lines, equally amazed. "And there's Harandur to the north... and Soradia across the sea! I've heard stories about these places from the Guild, but I've never actually seen them on a map before."

My excitement was palpable as I traced my finger over the vast continents, oceans, and distant mountain ranges. "This map covers so much land. It's incredible to see the entire world laid out like this."

Chief Balthar smiled warmly at our reaction. "I'm glad you boys find it useful. That map will help you navigate through unfamiliar territories and plan your future travels. You clearly have a bright future ahead of you."

Nozue looked up, clutching the silver pouch. "This will definitely be an invaluable tool for our journey. Thank you, Chief Balthar."

"If you ever need more work or have other quests in mind, don't hesitate to return here. You've proven yourselves," Balthar nodded respectfully.

With a final wave to the cheering camp, Nozue and I set off into the cool night, heading back toward the city. I couldn't stop looking at the World Map under the moonlight. The promise of distant lands and massive, unknown adventures fueled our journey home.
